Fun fact: Ignitus in that cutscene where he fights the apes is technically using YOUR moveset. I was as fully upgraded in newgame plus and saw him using that cascadung firebomb upgrade, then talk to spyro as the fireballs were still going off after the upgraded fury attack was used.
Toridori that too is a part i did enjoy. I just thought in the end it is a waste without a multiplayer match or something. You just PLAY through the game once and you're done. Edit: Unless you want to PLAY the eternal night. A game that too has a great story, but feels more like a add on to the original game with a rise of difficulty. The gameplay is just the same
As much ire as it gets, I honestly liked The Eternal Night the most out of the trilogy. The gameplay was more challenging, the levels were more interesting and the story kept me more invested than the other two. Plus it has one of my favourite title screens in any game.
I mean, I can see where they're coming from. The knockback can get obnoxious, but other than that it's perfectly do-able if you ration your breath power and use Dragon Time in tight spots.
That was a wonderfully unbiased review of this game. Me personally, this version of Spyro was my childhood, because I didn't grow up playing the originals. Looking back at it now, the game is very repetitive, but I can't help but say I love it. Trust me, you'll be disappointed with the Eternal Night, in terms of gameplay. Story and musical score on the other hand, damn did they do good. Wonderful review, and I can't wait to hear the angry rants for Eternal Night's gameplay.
Unbiased, even with me griping on about the combat? :D Joking, thank you for watching Neil! And that's fair, if I'd grown up with this game I'd probably love it a lot more too. There are things about the originals that suck but I don't see it because of rose tinted childhood spectacles! And I'm both looking forward to The Eternal Night and dreading the potential slog... xD
I'm exactly the same. The game holds a big sense of nostalgia for me so I do get a little sharp with people when they're like 'boooo TLoS sucks it ruined Spyro', but then again, original Spyro fans get sharp with me when I say I feel the original series was a little too nonsensical and silly for my tastes :P (Plus my introduction to 'original' Spyro was through Enter The Dragonfly, which is unfortunate to say the least.)
@@elusiveart530I just realized I’m five years late to replying to this lmfao. If I said the score was bad, it was absolutely a typo, and I’d be lying to myself. TEN’s soundtrack is my favorite of the trilogy.
Hearing the soundtrack makes me want to dig out my copy of Dawn of the Dragon to play it again. I gave up on Spyro after Hero's Tail, but the fact you could fly whenever you wanted in DotD got me excited.
I like a New Beginning and yeah the Reboot series should NOT be compared to the original games. LoS is like an alternate universe version of Spyro. It has no ties to the original other than little nods to the orignal series with the characters
Grew up with the DS Version and ABSOLUTELY Love it. Finally got my hands on the PS2 Version as well as The Eternal Night PS2 last year. It was such a Blast playing them
He is more annoying but I feel like that was the point. He captures Sparx's annoying comic relief character archetype so well. There's also the fact that there's at least energy and interest behind West's performance, I could tell that David Spade was just sitting there recording his lines like "ugh where's my paycheck?"
When I first got the game, I was just happy to get more Spyro, and doing melee, then playing through it, upgrading sll the breaths, I realized that felt like animated film that took elements of Lord of the Ringls and Avatar:TLA's themes and power set, but slapped Spyro on it. You know what, It made me not care about getting the other two games because of how "meh" I felt. I also STILL have PS2 copy with a save state from August 2007... That fileis turning 11 in a few days... God I feel old lol
Wow that's an old save file! I wish I still had my old consoles and games, silly me got rid of them all years ago. Though that's more my parents telling me I didn't need old stuff anymore... :I
GenerationWest Mind you that the Legend of Spyro series was released during when video games went through the edge phase. It’s really telling when the series expects you to take the characters and story seriously.
Oh, Elijah Wood is also the voice of Mumble from Happy Feet! BTW, Elijah Wood and Carlos Alazraqui stared in Happy Feet in which Carlos voiced Nestor who voices Spyro in first Spyro game. I can imagine Two Spyros meeting each other.
Most people who played Spyro growing up started with the original trilogy...I had this game, A Hero's Tail, and Enter the Dragonfly on my gamecube. This one in particular I spent countless hours beating up apes and throwing them over cliffs using the electric breath with my sister, lol. Lots of great memories attached to this janky game for me💜
Long story but first game I had was a disk of Ripto's Rage before I got ANB on Christmas, this game just feels more captivating and like I wanna be in the world myself, had dreams I wanted to legit be laying on my back up in that spot of the Temple where you have to bash down and just be doing nothing.
I’ve played most of the console Spyro games (excluding Enter the Dragonfly), and honestly, this trilogy is my favorite. Even now, with the Reignited Trilogy out. I especially loved the third one, because you can finally fly freely. I also quite loved that you could switch between Spyro & Cynder - or play with a friend! Sparx having his own personality was wonderful (I thought, anyways), went really nice with this new Spyro. There’s a large part of my that wants a Spyro game that takes place while he’s an adult, but I have absolutely no clue how that would even begin.
I never played a single Spyro game, but watched the cutscene compilation for this trilogy and can say, that Sparx is the reason, I will never touch the Legend of Spyro. Not only does he look extremely ugly, but is unbarebal, with his talking, that is not only unending, but also bursts from sarkasm that you could nearly smell it. This insect was probably ment as a comedic relief for this game, but there is entertaining and there is pissing someone off...
I thought it was fun. Repetitive like you said, but fun. I even played it a couple more times at later dates. However, when I got a PS2, the main thing I wanted to get to was the Sly Cooper games (all three were out by this point). I beat 1 and 3 in three days and 2 in two days. I'll tell you right now, Eternal Night can be a little frustrating, especially the final boss. But it's worth going through for the story. Sadly, I've never gotten to play Dawn of the Dragon and had to settle for watching cutscenes on RUclips. PS2 is the only platform system I have. Definitely watch the credits for the great songs too.
The only one I loved was Dawn of the Dragon, I'll play the other two, but the combat and breaths are so fun in the last of the trilogy. I do love big Cynder though. And nothing beats flying ;)
bunch of younglings destroyed by dark forces, one guardian left, one special child adopted, finds guardian and learns he has to stop the darkness... then stops corrupted hero and makes them good again... Star Wars?
Don't know why this was in my recommended but I'm glad it was. I remember loving this game as a kid and the entire trilogy. Hoping the game wasn't clouded in nostalgia I played this one again and I'm so glad I did. I still love the game. Yes the combat can be repetitive but I have a high tolerance for repetition. I was really surprised how well the visuals and the voice acting held up over the years. Story is Dark but never goes into edgelord territory (Thank god) and I can still enjoy it as an adult. Honestly I would rather have Remakes of these three games than the original (probably gonna get some odd eyes for that) but I know that's never gonna happen. Really enjoyed the video and know you have a new subscriber ready for new videos.
I'm the opposite, repeating stuff makes me grumpy haha. I stick around for the story though, and the story for A New Beginning was pretty entertaining which made up for the combat. :) That's fair enough, everybody has their own preferences! Just ignore any people that shout, "You're wrong, originals are better!" I hate Dark Souls for example, and I feel like the only one who does. xD
I would agree in enjoying a remake of this series; I still call it the 'new' trilogy.... guess it sin;t quite new anymore but the first one is called new... soooooo
A remake would be wonderful, they have excellent stories but the game could seriously do with an overhaul of the gameplay mechanics and balancing and perhaps adding new content.
When you first get to Convexity, did you notice that there seemed to be a voice whispering Spyro's name? I think this was supposed to be the Dark Master's voice.
I just listened to one of my clips now and that genuinely creeped me out.. I heard nothing for ages and was like hmmm, turned the volume up more and suddenly hear a low raspy voice say "...Spyrooooo...." .. at least I think that's what it said. o_o
I think judging this series as its own thing is EXACTLY the way to go! At least in my experience, people often get mad at LoS because they go in expecting it to be a bright, funny, goofy, colourful collectathon, which is FAAAAR from what it's trying to be. It's trying to be a more serious beat-em-up, and in that regard it's amazing! But people hate it because they want it to be a funny collectathon, when that was never the point of the series... It's like going into Skyrim expecting it to be like Crash Bandicoot. Skyrim is an amazing game, but if you're looking for it to be like Crash Bandicoot you're gonna be disappointed and feel "betrayed". (That all said, if you just don't like beat-em-ups, that's fine. My point just is that I see tons of people only being disappointed because of their own expectations.)
To be honest, after A Hero's Tail tried so hard to be what you said - goofy, colourful etc - I'm glad that TLoS went in this direction. It's a fresh take on Spyro and I appreciate the developers doing something different. Imagine if Skyrim was like Crash, and every time something bad happens to your protagonist they yell 'WOAH'! xD
I have to say the music and the lore was a major upgrade and I love it. If that can be mix with the classic game style of the original Spyros we would have the best DRAGON game of all time.
Great video, never played this one so it's interesting to see. Looking forward to the next two. Also I watched your entire Spyro history series over the past couple of days so now have Spyro History withdrawal.
Toridori I never realized how much time a kid spends on holiday until I did an odd job at a school. They have so much free time!! (At least in America) The toys were also way cooler back then. lol
I'll admit it... I had one as a kid... then it malfunctioned and it would only shut one eye and kept turning on at weird times and the voice got kind of slurred. It was either drunk or possessed by the devil.
We were OBSESSED with this trilogy back in 2010-2013. Had some of the most memorable and creative fanfictions on the internet which were on par in quality to several published books. For some strange reason, that was the most memorable experience of my entire life.
I played through this series in my childhood where I was a dumb kid and just enjoyed any game thrown at me. I do enjoy watching these videos seeing the games in a non-nostalgic lens although I had recently played through A New Beginning on an emulator and found some things to feel a bit different. With that in mind I look forward to your next videos on the other games, specifically Dawn of the Dragon because for reasons you'll see that game is far better than the previous two.
Hey Tyvan, thanks for watching! Ahh, to be young and happy with any game thrown at us right? I used to love Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness as a kid. :D
I think she mentioned in one of her previous videos that she lives in South Africa, and therefore games/consoles would need to be imported, and the rates of postal theft for higher value items like these are incredibly high.
I remember New Beginnings being too easy, and very slow & grindy at parts, but I would do absolutely anything to see the next cutscene. After I finished the first game, I attempted to play Eternal Night and the artifical difficulty was so fucking bad I gave up and watched someone else play it instead 😭. But then I picked up the third game, and oh my god I loved it. I loved how you could just fly everywhere!
Pretty much my feelings towards the two games as well. Hated ANB's gameplay but loved the characters enough to want to see what happens next. Then TEN ruins the gameplay even more by being such a difficult grind. I'm currently at the ship part where you fly over to each one but I can't bring myself to play right now. :/
Can't wait to see the other two games. Good job on the video, you go into insane detail in all of these history of videos. Thank you for the entertainment 😁
I'm glad to find another reviewer who plays through the game, judges it honestly, and can freely express his/her opinions without it seeming too condescending and biased. Well done. You have earned yourself a new subscriber.
Thank you Train! I don't like to be completely negative about a game for the sake of views and teh luls, but I really struggled not to say bad things about this one. To be fair, the story is fine for me and I like the characters, but man oh man that combat...
Whoever is saying eternal night is terrible is just bad at older games, shit was goated, some bosses were a little too hard maybe but it was like dark souls, so satisfying when it was over
So well researched!!! So informative!!!!! This is a series I've stayed away from for the longest, but I'm willing to rent or borrow, just to give it a fair chance one day. The only game I'm really interested in is the GBA version of eternal night.....
Thank you snailgirl! It's not a bad reboot, it's just not my Spyro, ya know? And I never want to see another Ape enemy again after I'm done with this series.. >.>
I really glad you somewhat enjoy The Legend of Spyro so far, Toridori! I grew up with this version of Spyro, and although I agree that the combat is repetitive, I love TLoS games so much! Side note: I also grew up with the Kingdom Hearts series (I highly recommend those games BTW, and I'd love to see a review on those if you're interested and have the time and money, because the plot is deep and the gameplay is better than this)! Back to TLoS: The stereotype you mentioned (A New Beginning being okay, The Eternal Night being bad, and Dawn of the Dragon being great) is pretty accurate in my experience as a child. I like TEN a bit more now than I did (I hated it because I couldn't beat it when I was younger) but it's still my least favorite of the three, and DotD is my fav, while ANB is close to DotD because nostalgia, LOL. Regarding the characters, I think you'll like Cynder, and I love David Spade's version of Sparx! I've really enjoyed this series of Spyro - A History so far, and I'm glad I've gotten to watch all of them. I do love the classic Spyro games (I still love TLoS more tho) and I'm looking forward to the ReIgnited Trilogy in hopes that it'll be just as accurate as the N Sane Trilogy to the Crash classic trilogy. I can't wait (well, I can wait for that good quality video) to see you review the other two games in the series and thank you for continuing this series for Spyro games past the classic trilogy! ❤😊👍🏼
Yeah it's not as bad as I thought/heard it would be! I like the characters and the story so far at least. I would love to do KH and I even have them on PS3, problem is they are incredibly long games. That's a big commitment, but maybe if I did a bit of it over the coming months I could have stuff ready down the line to do a video. :D Is The Eternal Night quite tough then? I've heard the combat is a lot more challenging than ANB and the puzzles make you think more. Which I'm actually grateful for! Thank you so much for watching ThePsychicClarinetist, it means a lot to me that you and others are so interested in these rather long videos of mine and it encourages me to make more. :D
Toridori I'm glad you have some of the KH games already! Although they are long and the plot feels convoluted at times, I definitely think it would be a good series to cover. If you did cover KH in the future, I'd be more than happy to watch! Regarding The Eternal Night, I'd definitely say it's a step up from A New Beginning in difficulty. The platforming portions of the game are more difficult than ANB provided, and a few of the bosses can be quite difficult as well. The combat was expanded upon in both melee and elemental attacks. I won't explain details because seeing the changes is part of the fun, but I think you'll like some of the changes. I'm glad you're encouraged to continue because these long, detailed videos really are great! As you explained the story, I felt as if I was playing through the game and going through the events as you spoke (like a nostalgic trip down "memory lane" even though I revisit the game often). Thanks for the reply! 😊
I passed "Ty the Tasmanian Tiger" 1 from Krome Studios on 100 percent, opened all the bonus content in the game in 2022. I really liked the levels and gameplay in Ty Trilogy. I was surprised that the authors of interesting games about Ty couldn't make interesting gameplay for Spyro the Dragon. I haven't completed the second and third parts of the Tasmanian Tiger yet, but I plan to do it next year
I hated the original Spyro games as a kid, couldn’t stand the graphics or storyline, but I loved a hero’s tail. My favourite is the new trilogy, my whole childhood was those 3 games.
I grew up with these and went through them again, I do see the quirks but a revised enemy setup would be nice aswell as some fixes but I love the story
I've always preferred A Hero's Tail to A New Beginning because I really hate this game's combat, but the puzzles where a decent change of pace if a bit monotonous at times. The voice acting was really good on the other hand, especially Elijah Wood who is probably my second favourite Spyro VA right behind Tom Kenny.
Man, imagine if people actually read that blurb about the DeviantArt stuff not being canon! Death Battle would've had a WAY different outcome if they actually paid attention to their resources...
Toridori Death Battle is a series by ScrewAttack that's basically Deadliest Warrior but with fictional characters. Similar characters or iconic characters from different franchises battle it out using knowledge from ALL continuities. Boba Fett vs. Samus Aran, Dan Hikibi vs. Mr. Satan, Kratos vs. Spawn, and more recently, Crash Bandicoot vs. Spyro. The fights are animated either using sprite art or, more recently, 3D animation. It always ends in a bloody death which is why I'm not particularly fond of it. They used the Legend continuity for the Crash vs. Spyro fight but also included some details pulled right from that DeviantArt account you mentioned...specifically (and this is kind of a spoiler) how a power Spyro gets later in the series is the equivalent of atomic bomb explosions emanating from his mouth. Aether or something. Long story short, it kinda hands Spyro the win by making him waaaaaay overpowered compared to Crash.
ShinyGaara65 I mean. Aether is pretty OP in the games anyway (did you see what it did to Gaul?), but even without it, Spyro would still most likely win against Crash.
AdmiralOctopus Meh. I was a OG Spyro fan. I only got Eternal Night from an ex-friend and never finished it. I just don't like Death Battle. I prefer One Minute Melee. People don't have to die in that and sometimes they work together in the end. Also no Pikachus have been fed to any wolves in an unfair fight they had no possible way, shape, or form of winning.
I mostly just watch DB for the fight at the end cuz regardless of the outcome well done animated fights are fun to watch. but yea they are bad at research. but...as a LoS AND a Crash fan both, even MINUS what they pulled from the DA page...Crash stood no chance. Spyro is just...infinitely more powerful.
Loved the review. Now for anyone still willing to play this game here's a tip. This game is essentially a cinimatic power trip. If you want to kill anything in under 5 seconds, use the earth secondary fire to get enimies in the air, and then jump up and spam the standard fire. Doesn't matter if there to heavy to lift either.
I grew up with all these spyros and as a kid I did enjoy this one as well. For the originals I didn’t have to wait for the releases because my older brother obvi already had them but didn’t play this series as much as I did. We both enjoyed the melee and I loved them but I agree looking back on it , it is very repetitive. Definitely more entertaining for a younger audience
I do think the games short comings are definitely the gameplay, I personally love the voice work, story and the instrumental music. Especially the end credits for the next 2 games! ❤️
The music really sets you in the mood, whether the game is giving exposition, having you fight a big bad boss, or having a light hearted moment. 10/10 on that part!
I just adored this game for it's music and story I probably replayed this game more times than anyone healthily would and I also agree on your thoughts on why there could not have been more flying levels.
This was a very good unbiased view of this game. I personally was in the hate camp...I remember getting it for Christmas when I was around 11. I had loved the original trilogy, been disappointed by ETD and didn't mind AHT and wasn't sure what I'd think of this. Unfortunately I just found the whole game really depressing...the murky colours, the doomy plot line and vibe, the endless loud and repetitive combat (it was particularly bad playing this for me as my grandfather has recently passed and my mum was very sad, so hearing the violent sound effects would make her rly upset). This game unfortunately sucked all the joy and heart out of spyro for me...I'm just so glad reignited rekindled it.
Toridori Not sure about you but, in my opinion, The Eternal Night is only slightly better than A New Beginning. I do appreciate the developers trying to expand on gameplay by introducing Dragon Time, you will know what that is when you play it, eventhough the gameplay is still more of the same. Another thing I like are the collectibles throughout the game to extend your life, breath gauges, and collect concept art and this continues with Dawn of the Dragon with more things to collect.
I really enjoyed playing the first game, don't remember ANYTHING of the second game and loved the third one that my mother played with me (she played Cynder). So I am looking forward to you next vid to be reminded of what happened in the second title. XD
i can play this game all day long tbh, and hardly ever get boring. I used to play the game once a week from the beginning towards the end in only one day playthrough
Looking at the footage, your emulator seems to be screwing up some of the visuals. Namely, in that any object or scenery that's near open sky seems to have a weird white outline around it. This isn't present when you play it on a console.
Oh yeah I figured as much! I actually had worse problems than this, mainly graphics repeating themselves in the fire effects but this is as good as I got it. And I still said the graphics were beautiful regardless... but that turtle in the sea with the cube.. xD
That purple ability is often referred to by fans as Convexity. However, even though it's never mentioned in the games, there is a canon name for that purple ability. It's called Ether. Also, in Eternal Night, Spyro will gain a Dark Ether ability, also known as Nether. Ether and Nether are in fact canon names. Also, even Elijah Wood compared The Legend of Spyro with The Lord of the Rings.
I know it wont happen, but seeing how this game could be with updated graphics and gameplay would be great. Adding more enemy + combat variety, making the levels less linear, improved bosses, etc, would honestly turn it to a great game
Right away I'm going to tell you the 1st Legend of Spyro is my favorite of the triology. It's such an silplistic yet compelling start of what would've been an amazing fantasy story. You have in New Beginning an traditional Hero's jounrey tail of a hero discovering himself as he goes to confront the big bad dragon. Except with the twist the hero himself is an dragon and you as an charter who'd normally just be an villain or sometimes sidekick is fighting an long hard fight to save his race! Is it repetitive? Yes. Is Sparx annoying? Definitely. But I had such a blast with Spyro's breath ability's, the tension the world delivered, and the mostly great supporting cast I was willing to forgive it's flaws. Altough I feel they should've just finished the Shadow Legacy storyline on the Nintendo DS console for I can tell that the DS port of New Beginning was initially intended to be so. I didn't mind Spyro becoming OP via his Elder training and the darker tones (Shadow Legacy was Scarier though) since Shadow Legacy was more less that. Also I can't complain about the apes since the GBA trilogy kept reusing Rynoc's over and over again!
Poor Tori... I never played anything after I watched my sister play Enter the Dragonfly and realized that it was making a mockery of my childhood. Now they look a bit crap on an HD tv, so I'll just have to watch you play them. Sorry? :(
Normally Im against this idea. You should always try to form your own opinion from your own experience... But Spyro is a series that went through a blender too many times, and its probably best to not get your hands too dirty. (Some people even prefer this trilogy over the originals... so theres likely a disease or curse attached)
Eternal Night scared me so much that I never got past the halfway point in my play though, but I looked up the cutscenes on RUclips (about an hour long) one time... and that alone gave me more nightmares... DO NOT PLAY THAT GAME AT NIGHT EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great video once again, and I can appreciate almost all of your points even if I don't necessarily agree with all of them. The combat I thought worked very well and I loved comboing, but the sheer amount of combat you had to do got repetitive quickly. I ADORED the story and the characters (and I even liked Sparx!) and the graphics are lovely to look at. Overall I liked this game much more than I disliked it and, as a series, I would say I'm a big fan of TLoS but, like you, the OG trilogy will always be my favourite. Can't wait for your Eternal Night and Dawn of the Dragon videos!
It might be because I'm not great at hack and slash games with lots of combos. Playing games like Bayonetta or DMC, I just mash mash mash and hope for the best hah... I would have been less harsh if, as you said, it wasn't so repetitive. More enemy varieties would have helped! Overall though, it was a fun experience. :)
Dawn of the dragon is better in some ways (I think I remember the puzzles being more fun, and there's some exploration too). But worse in others; button mashing, QTEs, bad bosses. Swings and roundabouts really.
Tbh this was the last spyro game I ever played. It wasn't really bad or good, I played through it like 50 times as a kid, but for some reason when the next 2 came out, I just wasn't interested. After the horrid dragon fly game, this one being meh, and hero's tail having a data corruption before I was about to fight hte last boss, I felt no desire to continue. Than god the remakes are coming out soon
Aww man sorry to hear about your data corruption on A Hero's Tail, that really sucks! Nothing worse than making tons of progress in a game just to find your save file gets destroyed. :/ And I agree, this game was neither bad or good, just inbetween.. a 'meh' if you will haha! Still an improvement on Enter the Dragonfly though. :D
Toridori Don't apologise, and yes they ARE good IMO if your into turn based strategy Rpg that is. I suggest you start with Fire Emblem Awakening for the 3ds. Why Awakening?: 1-There's a free demo on the eShop. 2-It introduces many mechanics from the older titles.(without "holding your hand") 3-There are multiple difficulty settings since the game can be easily broken if you know all the details. 4-You don't need to know anything from the older games to enjoy it.
Elemental teachers that need rescuing. Smart ass sidekick with a big mouth. Elemental powers. Enemy corrupted by darkness. Hero gains a rare power at the end of the game to defeat said enemy...This is freaking Jak and Daxter! There is so much irony in the idea that a Spyro game is so similar to Jak and Daxter. Does Spyro get a gun in the next one?
I'd actually recommend trying the GBA versions for A New Beginning and The Eternal Night. A New Beginning has a lot of minigames and different terrain to help to break up the monotony at times, while The Eternal Night is sort of a Medtroid-vania Lite. It could just be my nostalgia, but I really enjoyed them.
You're the second person to say that actually! I will probably stick with PS2 as that's what I've done for whole series, but I'll definitely mention GBA The Eternal Night in next video, so thank you. :D
Is it weird that most of the big name platformers went towards a combat-focus gameplay style at one point, minus Mario (unless you count the spin-offs)? Sonic just (kinda) did with Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), partially with Sonic Unleashed, kinda with Sonic Boom, and then moreso fully with Sonic Frontiers. Crash did with the Titan games. Spyro did with this series. Ratchet and Clank quickly shifted from platforming with combat to combat with platforming (if that makes sense). Jak and Daxter quickly shifted from platforming with some combat to focusing greatly on combat. It is an interesting pattern.
I’m personally hoping to create a series where I look at the entire trilogy with all versions looked at. Since I’m wanting to focus on the gameplay more, I’m making sure to keep these videos in mind so I can point people to them.
I think it would have been cool if the rumoured Purple Dragon statue you see was meant to be THE original Spyro as a fully grown Dragon. Hey the game is already REALLY formulaic (turning Spyro into a destined hero, Moses imagery with the egg floating down the river, and a pretty by-the-numbers story), who not throw in reincarnation too? At least so there were SOME link to the classic PS1 trilogy we all love. I know Hunter shows up later but it's clearly not THAT Hunter.
@@ToridoriGaming Thanks for your reply, I find your videos VERY interesting, informative AND entertaining. Given they make reference to the Classic Trilogy with Hunter and Avalarr Valley, adding in stronger ties wouldn't be impossible. My guess is back in A New Beginning they hadn't yet decided the statue would be that of Malefor, I think his name was only revealed in the The Eternal Night or Dawn of the Dragon. Before that it was just some nebulous Dark Master far as I can recall. So I imagine they just had it as some generic Elder Dragon and LATER decided to retcon it into being Malefor. Could be that was from before he turned evil and they kept the statue around as a reminder of their failure. The Dragon Elders seem to dwell on their mistakes, as Ignitus does saying he failed Spyro and Cynder.
The Legend of Spyro trilogy will always be my favorite Spyro Trilogy! I have always been a huge fan of Gary Oldman who voiced Ignitus and David Spade who voiced Sparx! They will always hold a special place in my heart! I currently own A New Beginning for GameCube and I never get bored of it! I always get a laugh from Sparx in the first game! ❤❤❤
Fair score I'd say, interesting story and characters, and the devs tried to mix things up a bit. But that combat is so meh. Oh and have to knock a point off for Sparx, I just can't stand him... xD
I honestly can't wait to see you play the third game. Personally I never finished the second so I can't give an opinion but I enjoyed the first and third
I'm struggling to finish the 2nd myself but I will do it, FOR SCIENCE... or something. I'm hoping the third improves things drastically else I'm gonna be sad. :(
Toridori: ogers Me: *HEY NOW! YOUR AN ALL STAR! GET YOUR GAME ON! GO! HEY! HEY NOW,! YOUR AN ROCK STAR! GET THE SHOW ON! GET! PAID!* I plied this as a kid and the space whales and jellyfishes were awesome
This video is 5y old, but I still have to say that I absolutely I love the story and lore the three games tell us. The gameplay is what drags it down , but I feel like the gameplay is a minor part of the game. If they had done the trilogy in a movie style instead, I feel it would have been a lot more successful
Ohh I didn't know that! :D
Joke account aside I always love this trilogy no matter What people say
I love the story, but I wish the gameplay was a bit better. :/
The gameplay is just the same
@@shigerumiyamoto9612 no you can play the game over in newgame+ and you keep all four Breaths at the beginning and all its upgrades
@@ToridoriGaming as someone who played it to death as a kid, once you get it down it never leaves you.

As much ire as it gets, I honestly liked The Eternal Night the most out of the trilogy. The gameplay was more challenging, the levels were more interesting and the story kept me more invested than the other two. Plus it has one of my favourite title screens in any game.
Oooh, I'll pay attention to the title screen then! :)
Thank god someone likes it, I was dying seeing all the comments say that's a bad game, only because is more challenging.
I mean, I can see where they're coming from. The knockback can get obnoxious, but other than that it's perfectly do-able if you ration your breath power and use Dragon Time in tight spots.
I love it too! 😎
This guy knows what he's saying
That was a wonderfully unbiased review of this game. Me personally, this version of Spyro was my childhood, because I didn't grow up playing the originals. Looking back at it now, the game is very repetitive, but I can't help but say I love it. Trust me, you'll be disappointed with the Eternal Night, in terms of gameplay. Story and musical score on the other hand, damn did they do good. Wonderful review, and I can't wait to hear the angry rants for Eternal Night's gameplay.
Unbiased, even with me griping on about the combat? :D
Joking, thank you for watching Neil! And that's fair, if I'd grown up with this game I'd probably love it a lot more too. There are things about the originals that suck but I don't see it because of rose tinted childhood spectacles!
And I'm both looking forward to The Eternal Night and dreading the potential slog... xD
+Toridori I look forward to seeing your Eternal Night video, because trust me... It's a trip( and in terms of gameplay not the good kind.)
Neil Kaskoun dude how the fuck is eternal nights music score not any good??
@@elusiveart530I just realized I’m five years late to replying to this lmfao. If I said the score was bad, it was absolutely a typo, and I’d be lying to myself. TEN’s soundtrack is my favorite of the trilogy.
Hearing the soundtrack makes me want to dig out my copy of Dawn of the Dragon to play it again. I gave up on Spyro after Hero's Tail, but the fact you could fly whenever you wanted in DotD got me excited.
I'm looking forward to DotD, I wanna fly everywhere! :D
Toridori there are a few invisible walls, and gusts of wind that stop you going to high. But just being able to fly st anytime was so much fun!
I like a New Beginning and yeah the Reboot series should NOT be compared to the original games. LoS is like an alternate universe version of Spyro. It has no ties to the original other than little nods to the orignal series with the characters
Litten Fire real talk no one should never compare the legend of Spyro to the original Spyro because there two different franchises
Tru
@@toirlangston7203 *two different series
I remember playing Dawn of the Dragon when I was but a wee lad. Was pretty fun but I got stuck on it a lot because I was like 7.
You should go back and give it another go, see if it holds up! :)
Grew up with the DS Version and ABSOLUTELY Love it. Finally got my hands on the PS2 Version as well as The Eternal Night PS2 last year. It was such a Blast playing them
Trust me, Billy West as Sparx in the Eternal Night is FAR worse than David Spade.
Oh nuuuu.. D:
GenerationWest You might feel that way because of Spyro's voice actor a.k.a Elijah Woods.
What an odd but delightful coincidence! Also love the fact your avatar is a penguin while we talk about Happy Feet. :D
Cool. The penguin is Bambadee from Club Penguin.
RIP Club Penguin.. :(
Axel Goldfarb Elijah Wood also voiced 9 from the movie "9".
I love seeing new content about the TLoS series
I'm starting The Eternal Night today funnily enough, wish me luck!
Most people who played Spyro growing up started with the original trilogy...I had this game, A Hero's Tail, and Enter the Dragonfly on my gamecube. This one in particular I spent countless hours beating up apes and throwing them over cliffs using the electric breath with my sister, lol. Lots of great memories attached to this janky game for me💜
19:00 So... no trouble with the track cart, eh?
Not when you can fly like a boss. ;)
TROUBLE WITH THE TROLLEY EH? EH??
Long story but first game I had was a disk of Ripto's Rage before I got ANB on Christmas, this game just feels more captivating and like I wanna be in the world myself, had dreams I wanted to legit be laying on my back up in that spot of the Temple where you have to bash down and just be doing nothing.
I would be SO HAPPY if they made a remastered of this trilogy, it was my childhood game & I LOVED IT
Me too broooooo
I miss the days where he just buzzed!
This actually the first ever game I played on the PS2 when I got one for Christmas.
What did you think of it? :)
Big Cynder is sexy. ;)
37:46 - I love it when the armour falls off.
Good indicator to the player he's on his last legs too!
bunch of younglings destroyed by dark forces, one guardian left, one special child adopted, finds guardian and learns he has to stop the darkness... then stops corrupted hero and makes them good again... Star Wars?
How can people possibly hate legend’s Sparx when classics sparx has absolutely no dialogue? I found him funny...
I agree
Same!
Silence is better than nuisance
He's voiced by David Spade hahaha
I guess it depends on the sense of humor of the player. I found Sparx funny in all 3 games, just not a fan of the VA choice for Eternal Night
As always amazing Tori!!! Thank you for a great video!! Loved it.
Thank you Thomas!
That's fair enough, everybody has their own preferences! Just ignore any people that shout, "You're wrong, originals are better!"
I hate Dark Souls for example, and I feel like the only one who does.
I never noticed that, that sounds freaky. Kinda reminds me of Sauron whispering to Frodo when the Ring Wraiths are near him and the ring.. :o
It sounded EXACTLY like that. If you play it again, turn the volume up and listen carefully.
I just listened to one of my clips now and that genuinely creeped me out.. I heard nothing for ages and was like hmmm, turned the volume up more and suddenly hear a low raspy voice say "...Spyrooooo...." .. at least I think that's what it said. o_o
@@ToridoriGaming I heard the voice eventually sounds like "EEROH".
I'm sorry, great video, but did sparx call cinder sexy? Wtf why?
Dragon fetish, I guess.
That sweet dragon ass. ;)
Tyler Morris Cinder doesn't look over 18 to me. Sparx is going to jail.
BECAUSE of RULE 34!
Wilson Scraddock lol why? They're the same age 😛
Thanks for the mention Tori! Love your work, glad to help.
No problem Emil, I really appreciate you letting me know about Jared Pullen because there was a lot of nifty information to be had on his dA page. :D
Lol that's dedication Aaron, thank you! I'll try and get the next one done sooner than later to satisfy your addiction. :D
Toridori haha looking forward to it!
Whoa, that was quick! Also, great job with the video!
Do you think so? People kept asking me when the next one was gonna be out and I was like, oh lord... Thank you, Nick! :D
Toridori
Yeah! It was only 2 weeks, and you’ve been tiding us over with livestreams, so time flew by for me at least!
It's because I love you guys! \o/
45:07 I miss my childhood, too. :_(
And to think, when we were kids we just wanted to grow up!
Toridori I never realized how much time a kid spends on holiday until I did an odd job at a school. They have so much free time!! (At least in America) The toys were also way cooler back then. lol
Furbies, mwahaha!
I'll admit it... I had one as a kid... then it malfunctioned and it would only shut one eye and kept turning on at weird times and the voice got kind of slurred. It was either drunk or possessed by the devil.
I love Sparx in this series.
I remember halfway through I used cheat codes for unlimited mana just to make the combat go faster.
Lol don't tempt me.. xD
Did you play on a emulator? Holy crap are some graphics glitchy as hell. My physical copy runs really well.
Yeah an emulator. My fave was the cube around the turtle in the sea... xD
Why not just buy a capture card and play the game legally?
I think she mentioned in one of her previous videos that she lives in South Africa, and therefore games/consoles would need to be imported, and the rates of postal theft for higher value items like these are incredibly high.
also Good capture cards are pretty expensive and very hit or miss in quality. emulators are free
My digital copy I downloaded on my Xbox 360 runs better, and has no glitches and uses an original Xbox emulator
Im excited for the next two seeing as they're the only ones i hadn't played
A new experience for both of us then! :D
Can't wait to see the other two games. Good job on the video, you go into insane detail in all of these history of videos. Thank you for the entertainment 😁
No problem dirk boi, thank you for watching! :D
I was just wondering when this video would get made! Aww yeah, I'm downloading this so I can listen to it while I walk.
Oh wow, like a podcast then? :D
Yep :3
I find this series really relaxing to listen to when I'm outside the house ^_^
Aww I'm glad!
The music in these games is both epic & phenomenal!! 😎😃👍👍
Oh god I remember The Eternal Night... I still have no idea how they managed to crap that one out for release
And I have it to look forward to! \o/
Whoever is saying eternal night is terrible is just bad at older games, shit was goated, some bosses were a little too hard maybe but it was like dark souls, so satisfying when it was over
I agree!
Is The Eternal Night quite tough then?
40:00 was symbolic, I had goosebumps for years
I passed "Ty the Tasmanian Tiger" 1 from Krome Studios on 100 percent, opened all the bonus content in the game in 2022. I really liked the levels and gameplay in Ty Trilogy. I was surprised that the authors of interesting games about Ty couldn't make interesting gameplay for Spyro the Dragon. I haven't completed the second and third parts of the Tasmanian Tiger yet, but I plan to do it next year
The guy who voiced Terrador also voices Crunch for Crash The Wrath Of Cortex

Spyro: "I'll kill every ape I see. From chimpan A to Chimpan Z. Oh you'll never make a money out of me."
I hated the original Spyro games as a kid, couldn’t stand the graphics or storyline, but I loved a hero’s tail. My favourite is the new trilogy, my whole childhood was those 3 games.
Fair enough! I love the original trilogy and found anything outside of it okay. Just okay though. xD
Holy shit what a bad opinion. You should be ashamed.
These 3 games were my childhood aswell
Is this some kind of a bait comment?
I grew up with these and went through them again, I do see the quirks but a revised enemy setup would be nice aswell as some fixes but I love the story
I've always preferred A Hero's Tail to A New Beginning because I really hate this game's combat, but the puzzles where a decent change of pace if a bit monotonous at times. The voice acting was really good on the other hand, especially Elijah Wood who is probably my second favourite Spyro VA right behind Tom Kenny.
I really enjoyed Elijah Wood as Spyro too, I thought it was an odd combo given Spyro's looks but it worked! And Gary Oldman killing it as usual. :D
*Reignited Trilogy gets released*
Ignitus: "WE DID OUR WAITING! 6 YEARS OF IT! IN SKYLANDS!"
I keep forgetting he was Sirius, man that guy is a chameleon! xD
The game also gave the many enemies their own name. Mainly the apes and spider mushrooms.
Man, imagine if people actually read that blurb about the DeviantArt stuff not being canon! Death Battle would've had a WAY different outcome if they actually paid attention to their resources...
What is Death Battle? :o
The whole trilogy deserves a remake.
I grew up with the old Spyro games and I always loved that purple dragon
The series was made during the edge days mind you.
25:29 I remember getting attacked by the eel things
I love the 3 game's
Still got two more to enjoy so I'll see what I think of it as a whole. :)
Toridori Not sure about you but, in my opinion, The Eternal Night is only slightly better than A New Beginning. I do appreciate the developers trying to expand on gameplay by introducing Dragon Time, you will know what that is when you play it, eventhough the gameplay is still more of the same. Another thing I like are the collectibles throughout the game to extend your life, breath gauges, and collect concept art and this continues with Dawn of the Dragon with more things to collect.
same here these two became my favorite game's
Just so you know, it's 'games' without an apostrophe.
There's also unlocking dark spyro after finishing the game too.
I really enjoyed playing the first game, don't remember ANYTHING of the second game and loved the third one that my mother played with me (she played Cynder). So I am looking forward to you next vid to be reminded of what happened in the second title. XD
Aww I wish my mum was as cool as yours! She never joined in on multiplayer games with me. :(
i can play this game all day long tbh, and hardly ever get boring.
And I still said the graphics were beautiful regardless... but that turtle in the sea with the cube.. xD
Toridori TURTLECUBE!
The ship did it too and I was genuinely like, "What is happening, is this the game!?"
i kinda like the outline as a stylistic choice lol
😂😂😂
That purple ability is often referred to by fans as Convexity. However, even though it's never mentioned in the games, there is a canon name for that purple ability. It's called Ether. Also, in Eternal Night, Spyro will gain a Dark Ether ability, also known as Nether.
Ether and Nether are in fact canon names.
Also, even Elijah Wood compared The Legend of Spyro with The Lord of the Rings.
Ahhh, thank you Alec! I didn't know those were the names, where did you find them? :)
Less than five minutes in: F***! Spyro's Moses in this???!!!!!! Very entertaining and informative, great video!
It's such an silplistic yet compelling start of what would've
been an amazing fantasy story. You have in New Beginning an traditional Hero's jounrey tail of a hero discovering himself as he goes to
confront the big bad dragon. Except with the twist the hero himself is an dragon and you as an charter who'd normally just be an
villain or sometimes sidekick is fighting an long hard fight to save his race!
Is it repetitive? Yes. Is Sparx annoying? Definitely. But I had such a blast with Spyro's breath ability's, the tension the world delivered,
and the mostly great supporting cast I was willing to forgive it's flaws.
Altough I feel they should've just finished the Shadow Legacy storyline on the Nintendo DS console for I can tell that the
DS port of New Beginning was initially intended to be so.
I didn't mind Spyro becoming OP via his Elder training and the darker tones (Shadow Legacy was Scarier though)
since Shadow Legacy was more less that.
Also I can't complain about the apes since the GBA trilogy kept reusing Rynoc's over and over again!
Everything changed when the dark armies attacked. Only Spyro, master of all four elements, could stop them.
Spyro: The Last Dragon Bender
Thanks for playing this so I don't have to!
(applies to everything after Year of the Dragon)
Lol, and still two more to go! *help me*
Poor Tori...
That's fine Rei Zak, I'll suffer so you guys don't have to!
Okay, now I'm slightly terrified.. D:
Not the dreaded QTE's! They were bad enough in Crystal Dynamic's Tomb Raider games... :I
Don't forget the gamma being turned up _TOO DAMN HIGH._ in DoTD.
MewMewPolo I thought the bosses were pretty good imo. Especially the final boss.
And I agree, this game was neither bad or good, just inbetween.. a 'meh' if you will haha! Still an improvement on Enter the Dragonfly though. :D
Damn, I can listen to your voice for hours, also have you ever tried the Fire Emblem series?
Here's a like,you earned it.
Thank you for the like FyrFlyr! I don't think I've played any Fire Emblems games, are they good? And is that a dumb question, sorry! xD
Toridori
Don't apologise, and yes they ARE good IMO if your into turn based strategy Rpg that is.
I suggest you start with Fire Emblem Awakening for the 3ds.
Why Awakening?:
1-There's a free demo on the eShop.
2-It introduces many mechanics from the older titles.(without "holding your hand")
3-There are multiple difficulty settings since the game can be easily broken if you know all the details.
*take off glasses* My god, you're right! I haven't played Jak and Daxter in so many years I've forgotten the story somewhat. :O
The statue isn't a 'what if' of adult Spyro, its literally Malefor/The Dark Master. As seen by Malefor's design
So basically convexity (Is that how its spelled) is basically Half-Life's zen on streriods.
*looks up Half Life's Zen* Yes! :O
Oooo gurl I been waitin’! Hold up let me grab my cereal
What cereal you got and can I have some? :3
Toridori Frosted Fkn Flakes. Gonna grab you a bowl while I refill for the halfway mark
YES!
This was my first Spyro game ever and I love it and it was the ps2 version
I didn't even know about the GBA version.
Me neither until I did this video! It doesn't look great to be honest, even by GBA standards..
You can thank GTA III for that
I’m personally hoping to create a series where I look at the entire trilogy with all versions looked at.
That would have been a lot more awesome, plus made more sense in a way? Because why do they still have a statue of Malefor if he became evil? xD
The fan art was the golden age on spyro. So many spyro and cynder OC. Good times.............
And then Sparx's voice changed again, and again, just to confuse gamers! xD
Toridori i know right? At least they had two other amazing actors voice him. Wayne Brady and Billy West!
Nice video! I played this game, and I will score it as a 6.75/10.
Fair score I'd say, interesting story and characters, and the devs tried to mix things up a bit. But that combat is so meh. Oh and have to knock a point off for Sparx, I just can't stand him... xD
Tori, you are the best.
I know *puts on shades* ;)
My sunglasses emote won't work :(
Its actually does whisper spyro while your climbing to fight cynder if you dont rush through it you can actually hear it
I honestly can't wait to see you play the third game.
Personally I never finished the second so I can't give an opinion but I enjoyed the first and third
I'm struggling to finish the 2nd myself but I will do it, FOR SCIENCE... or something. I'm hoping the third improves things drastically else I'm gonna be sad. :(
I honestly couldn't because the game disk was scratched (if memorys serves) It can be pretty tough
Stay strong my dude.
Phil Lamarr is also Hermes in Futurama :D
Great bonda of Uganda!
Toridori: ogers
Me: *HEY NOW! YOUR AN ALL STAR! GET YOUR GAME ON! GO! HEY! HEY NOW,! YOUR AN ROCK STAR! GET THE SHOW ON! GET! PAID!*
I plied this as a kid and the space whales and jellyfishes were awesome
There isn't a backtracking feature, however the game does loop after you beat it so you start from the beginning with all your breaths and upgrades
Oh that's not too bad. At least you get something for finishing!
This video is 5y old, but I still have to say that I absolutely I love the story and lore the three games tell us. The gameplay is what drags it down , but I feel like the gameplay is a minor part of the game.
If they had done the trilogy in a movie style instead, I feel it would have been a lot more successful
I love TLoS Series so much that I want to remake and remaster it 😄😍😌
*inserts Shia LaBeouf meme* JUST DO IT 😁
Toridori I’m only 17 and I’m going to be a Senior
You and me both tbh, if I ever win the lottery Im gonna hire a game development studio to make it for me
