    It’s time for another history video, and today we’ll be looking at the 2nd game in The Legend of Spyro series - The Eternal Night, though after playing through it myself I’d like to change the title to The Eternal Suffering because this game loved torturing me.
    I want to say Krome Studios learned from A New Beginning’s mistakes, making some excellent changes in The Eternal Night and crafting an exciting, challenging, and flawless game. But that wouldn’t be completely true. While some issues I had with A New Beginning have been improved upon for The Eternal Night, others have been made exponentially worse, and it’s these issues that force me to say it… I don’t like this game.
    To put into perspective how irritating this game was for me, this is the first time since doing the history series that I felt compelled to cheat in order to finish the bloody thing. As I said before however, there were some good changes made to certain mechanics in The Eternal Night, mechanics I’ll more than happily enthuse over to make up for all the griping.
    I best let you guys know I’m having a little change up in how I present this one. Normally I have everything in separate sections - like Story, World and Characters, Gameplay, and so on - but this time I’m going to keep it as one long section. The format in which I did the videos before, in my opinion, worked better for the first four Spyro games where areas were broken up into realms and the story was quite simple. It didn’t work quite so well for A Hero’s Tail and felt completely off for A New Beginning, with some sections such as Story, World and Characters going on for far too long. So let me know what you guys think of the new format.

    I enjoyed this one the most out of the Legend trilogy.
    Tho, Dawn of the Dragon does have the up of playing with a friend.
    Also, realizing that these games had a peanut budget makes me appreciate them even more.

      Well it's speculation but it would make sense as to why they were so cheaply made (reskins, same models etc). DotD at least will be a bit of a change up! :)

    it's a shame these games didn't have a higher budget. all the reskins bothered me as well and it makes you think what could have been if they just had some more money to work with. the gameplay suffers because of it and it's wasted potential but at least the story still shines through.

    spyro encasing himself in crystal in the ending was him using a time fury. my guess is that time manipulation is seen as another "element" to master, and with each element there is a fury. a move used in dire situations. whether spyro knew he could use a fury ability with time or not, he had prior experience with time manipulation and the only way he could save everyone was to freeze themselves in time essentially, safe from harm.
    it may not make much sense- but think of it this way. sure, spyro didn't have the fury taught to him. but how do you think it went for the first dragon to ever use a fury? it wouldn't have been taught to them. the only moment a move for that is called for is when things become too rough to handle and said dragon is using all they got left to keep going.

      To be fair now I think about it (always happens after I finish a video lol), Ignitus did mention in ANB that in times of crisis Spyro's abilities would reawaken due to the blood of his ancestors flowing through his veins. Or something like that. So I suppose it's not tooooo far-fetched but still it's very convenient, and a Deus Ex Machina!

    40:40 Actually, I think having a form of adult Cynder works here. Before entering the battle a voice tells Spyro: “Expose your heart to summon ghost, then face alone what you fear most.” It’s likely that Spyro’s greatest fear, based on that message and her foreboding presence in A New Beginning, is the adult/dark form of Cynder. As for the weird color change thing the boss does, I would assume that’s part of the “test” The Chronicler gave you to ensure it was Spyro who came to him and that his powers had been fully restored. This is only a theory, but I think it makes some sense

  • @emildubas6766

    Truth be told, I still have a great attachment to this trilogy, not because I grew up with this series, but because of all the limitless POTENTIAL this series could have! And there is seeds for these amounts of potential (music, some bits of lore, voice acting). Unfortunately, this series couldn’t get off the ground simply because of how limited the actual games were! I can applaud Krome for trying their damndest when their development time was so rushed and sparse. It isn’t hard to see either since each game was released each year (almost like the problem Insomniac had by releasing their game consistently each year). It always makes me want to see what a actual Legend game would be like that had all the budget and time they need. But I think I we’re way past that now, but it’s still fun to imagine all the potential this series could have. Who knows, maybe later on the next new OG Spyro could make some sort of continuity to Legend series, that would be a thrill for me personally. But regardless, it’s still fun to dream of what could’ve been!

    • @ToridoriGaming
      @ToridoriGaming  6 лет назад +18

      If it had 5x the budget it could've have been sooooooo good. By the way, thank you for that budget info! :D
      Makes me sad thinking this got no help money wise but Skylanders is a thing...

    • @alexanderhall5579
      @alexanderhall5579 6 лет назад +4

      Tbh I really think that the original three LOS games need to be remade first before even thinking about future instalments. And by remade, I don't mean a HD remaster, I mean a reboot from scratch using the latest triple A technology and a bigger budget, changing elements of the story that don't work (that is, if you're going to stick to the basics of the original story and not write another one) and adding in some new ones.
      Because if you're going to make a triple A game that's a continuation of the story of three games that are (let's face it) for the most part, mediocre, then the player has to get through three games that probably won't be as enjoyable as the fourth one (that is, if the fourth one is actually better.)

    • @coolsht7225
      @coolsht7225 6 лет назад +2

      Alexander Hall umm i dont think the 3 games are mediocre and if you think that its fine, but dont state it like its a fact because its subjective.

    • @alexanderhall5579
      @alexanderhall5579 6 лет назад

      I'm quite aware that opinions are subjective. What I meant by mediocre was that the games were, overall, OK (the third entry being the best), not terrible, but not great either. The reason for my opinion is this: if you compare, say, the first game with, say, 'Tomb Raider: Legend', a game released during the same year, the level of storytelling is clearly better in the latter, with superior voice acting and facial animations. So playing through the first LOS game after playing through Tomb Raider would expose the lack of conviction from the characters in Spyro. However, Tomb Raider most probably had a much higher budget than Spyro, so the developers really had to make some sacrifices in the creative department.

    The Legend of Spyro series was actually planned to have a movie, which I think would work better for this series, but was canceled in favor of the Skylanders series. I wonder how that would've been if it was made.
    Anyways, the new format works better for this kind of game. Can't wait to see what you think of The Legend Of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon. If what you said in The New Beginning was true, then Dawn of the Dragon will be amazing.

      Well, the title of the movie was "The Legend Of Spyro 3D" Implying that it was all CGI. Also, I heard that the plot was fairly similar to The New Beginning. I think the movie would be better than the games.

      It probably would not have been great. It was planned to be directed by the guy that did the Eragon movie, and anyone who read the books knows how much he butchered that... I would love a TLoS movie or tv show (though I'd always sooner sell my soul for a remaster/remake), but I think that movie being cancelled was a good thing.

      Tealgamemaster You’re right, this game certainly has a lot of flaws. And it seems that the more diehard fans prefer to overlook them in favor of one factor or another (probably the story).
      But I know, for myself at least, it’s the pain of the poor game design and the wonderful (if poorly executed) story that bring me back to this game. I want to convince myself that it’s better than it is, because I really appreciate the underlying spirit, but the reality of the game is still hard to swallow (the beautiful music and downer ending only exaggerate the conflict).
      I can’t wait until the DotD video, and I’m excited as ever for more content regarding Spyro, new or old!

      Also I don't like how Spyro is now this unique purple dragon and saviour of the world with powers like the Avatar, when before he was just a normal teenage kid who wanted to go to Dragon Shores. 😂

    I had quite the history with this game. Watching this video gave me so much nostalgia! I got this game ever since I was 7 and I never finished it due to my Wii breaking down shortly after I reached the final boss area. This was my very first and the only Spyro game I ever played in my life. I fell in love with the dark atmosphere and the soundtrack of this game and to me it is still a good game no matter what others say about it. I wasn't aware of Dark Spyro until some point like 2014 when my interest in Spyro suddenly rises again.

    I got this a year after I got the first one. I've played it twice all the way through and liked it well enough. The only thing I couldn't stand was the fight with Gaul because it took me so many tries. And I loved the music during the end credits. When I first heard it, I liked to imagine all the side characters from the previous game (dragon masters, Kane, etc.,) looking up at the sky at the mountain's destruction and wondering what had happened.

    Just wanted to point this tidbit out there. In the New beginning, while Spyro is in the convexity, you actually CAN hear spyro’s name being whispered as you try to get near Cynder. It’s rather creepy and (of course) it’s confirmed to be the dark master calling out to Spyro.

    I remember when I played this game over a decade ago. I managed to brute force my way through it without using the dragon time, because the chronicler said it was for only the most dire circumstances. I had assumed that this was serious, and that I shouldn't touch it, only using it for the few puzzles where it was absolutely mandatory.
    After completing the game, I realized the difficulty was scaled for you to actually use it regularly in fights, and I had just made it so much harder for myself for no reason.

    Thank-you so much for being the Chronicler on this retrospective, I really enjoyed it. I also really, really appreciate the time and effort you put into the play-though, but also the editing, pacing and narrative. It was a real treasure to discover, and has meant more to me than collecting all the quills. I may have snorted coffee at some of the puns.
    Your comments to combat and pacing, all of them, are very fair… to why this is hard to play, and why it was not a favorite, that was on my watch so that one is on me. I wish looking back we had done more to make this a classic that was a real charm to play. I wish you’d been there at the time to be loud about this play-testing, though… you know.. there were people around us supporting us being loud about the same things. Trust me; if I could forward this video to myself then now, I would! ... learnt so much not just from making this game, but reading the comments over the years across forums and such. This piece does a wonderful job highlighting the shortfalls (long-falls) and positives in a very clear way - that I hope reaches some platform designers today about also understanding what not to do, as much as what to do.
    Thank-you to everyone who has commented below from playing it. Did take a while to read every comment, but it was a lot of fun. To those that cherish it - that’s all we wanted to achieve, to those that didn’t enjoy it - I hope there were other games you had that you did cherish, and sorry the mark was missed on this one. I know in this era each disc into the console was a solid chunk of investment and commitment.
    I am still immensely proud of what the development teams and publishing teams achieved. To everyone from the development and publishing teams who’s still here - if you see this. Hugs. @Toridori.. this is the best review of this work I’ve seen to date, and watched it with my girls. That was probably a better experience than playing the game with them.

    The Elemental Dragon (Cynder Reskin) also sorta makes sense from a story standpoint: Before entering the fight, the magical voice tells Spyro to face what he fears most. Spyro's biggest is Cynder becoming evil again.

    I agree with you and many other commentors. This trilogy definitely brought a new light to Spyro that I feel would of had a lot of potential if more time and effort went into it. I realize too that the games were only really given a year between release dates and that only allowed for so much to be executed. Still impressed with that they managed to pull off though. I hope so as well that with the original Spyro being brought back into spotlight, that it may lead to revisiting this side of him some day.
    In my personal opinion in regards to this trilogy. it definitely got better as it went on. The first one while strong in storyline and introducing all these new concepts for Spyro definitely was lackluster in the gameplay department. Too repetitive, level. designs were interesting upon first play through, but it got boring as the levels dragged on too long without bringing anything new to the table. I loved the idea to evolve breathe abilities and actually have a more combative vs. collection demanding approach, but at this point I really only can praise the first game for the story and what it tried to show.
    The second game definitely brought more to it especially in regards to making the gameplay a little more intriguing and challenging and actually forced you to start using strategy and timing to get through some of the levels. The pacing felt better with a more captivating hook in the story when real conflict became apparent.
    Lastly the third game was genuinely incredible. The Co-op and free flying were great add ins. Plus there was so much more you could do with more breath abilities than before rather than just aim and shoot. The play styles were different between levels and that really helped add the spice that the first two games were lacking. It brought upon just enough challenging and itneresting moments to make it worth while for not only the first playthrough, but for many following. Really it fell short for me because well, it was too short!!! However with the time the developers had, they still pulled off a great end to the trilogy.
    Overall i really can hope that this side to Spyro can be revisited with new developers who can put more time and effort into it. Otherwise I'll just continue to dream about what it could of been.

    I love the new format being presented in the video.
    Your humor was able to get a few chuckles out of me, the charismatic personality of yours was priceless and to top it off, I can actually relate to you on a few moments. The game however, is a little unfair at first with the hit boxes( I loathe the bad doggos)
    But what really broke my sanity and patience was that platform in the Well Of Souls.
    I cheated with Dark Spyro and felt somewhat better but still annoyed......
    And to be honest here, I freaking love the last song ‘This Broken Soul’ as I just feel like I’m going to cry.
    I’m very excited to see your thoughts on ‘Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon’ in the future.

    You can technically stun lock enemies in this game by shooting them with ice after comboing them and rinse repeat
    There's also other various ways to lock and instakill but they require pressing circle and square at the same time at specific points, and switching breaths mid combos while still using circle and square
    Aka you need to hold the controller awkwardly and have big hands

    Wow, this was a MASSIVE improvement over the last video. Seems my comment made quite an impact because almost every issue I brought up there has been adressed. The new structure works fantastically for a game like this, it gives a better view of the game's pacing while the video itself doesn't drag on at all. Finding more unique things to talk about in between bits of story explanation paces the video wonderfully and makes for a much more enjoyable watch. There were still a few issues I'd like to bring up though, since I think everyone can always improve their craft and as someone that makes a (kind of) siimilar type of content to this, I know I'm personally always looking for areas where I can improve. That said, there still could be more actual analysis of the story. You explain what happens throughout very well and without dragging it on for too long but at the same time there was almost no actual analysis of the story's quality. Walking away from this video, I'm kind of left to make my own opinion of the story as if I had played the game myself but without having experienced the game's story in its entirety. As the one anaylzing the game you should be the one to assess the story's quality and explain what makes it good or bad, so more of that would be very welcome. The other major issue I had was tone. You practically call the game garbage at the very beginning but from watching this video (and never having played it myself) I'm left thinking "this looks decent, maybe something I wanna try out". To be fair though, you do go back and say the game was "ok" (albeit just barely) at the end of the video, which is a bit closer to the impression the analysis gave, so maybe that intro bit was just a joke and I misinterpreted it as more serious than it was meant to be. Regardless, I still think you could've done a better job selling just how annoying the game could get, though you didn't do a bad job, I just think it could've been a bit better. One other thing is that when you brought up how ugly the snowy mountain area was, that would've been a perfect time to talk about the game's graphics as a whole which you don't really do anywhere else in the video. Similarly, when you talk about the credits theme would've been a good time to talk about the music and sound design as a whole, but those aren't really major issues since the gameplay and story were clearly the focus of the game and more important to the analysis. Despite my criticisms, this was still a genuinely very well made and interesting video, and I hope to see more like this from you in the future! You've definitely cemented yourself as a new channel I will continuously look forward to seeing new videos from. Can't wait for the Dawn of the Dragon retrospective!

    I personally love Eternal Night. In comparison to A New Beginning, I find it to have way more interesting setpieces and environments, I like the introduction of the Dragon Time mechanic, and I adore the darker story and how well it runs with it (especially in comparison to other platform series that attempted darker stories at the time, i.e. Shadow the Hedgehog). And as someone who loves difficult games, Eternal Night struck a chord with me.
    But yeah, while I disagree on this game being bad, I can at least appreciate the fact that you're not constantly comparing it to the classic trilogy, but instead measuring it on its own merits, unlike what I've seen so many other, somehow bigger content creators do. Underrated RUclipsr, fr. Keep it up

    Your experimented format for this video, I think, went a lot more smoother than your A New Beginning review. The flow of this video, I think, would make more sense to people that have not watched/played this game (although, when you were discussing the "Dreamtime" areas, I thought you went a little ahead of yourself by discussing all the elements... but thats just my opinion; not the mention you essentially spoiled the game for yourself by using that Dark Spyro cheatcode but I guess I can't blame you for that after looking at that little fight there).
    When you review Dawn of the Dragon, you should perhaps use this same format. Tis my opinion though and I have not read up on anyone else's opinion on this new format of yours.

    I used to think I just sucked at games as a kid but the more I’ve looked into the TLOS Spyro trilogy over the years I realize it wasn’t me, the games were just horribly made. Though I went through new beginning not knowing I could upgrade my dragon breaths until the final fight with cynder, so that’s partly on me. I wonder if I would still like these games if I played them now that I have the knowledge that games can be poorly made and it isn’t always my fault that I do poorly sometimes in games. Looking back though I know I really liked the story and I still remember that about the trilogy very fondly. Though Dawn of the dragon was an excellent improvement in the gameplay department. This was a great little retrospective and I really enjoyed it. Ima explore more of your channel, cheers!

    Dark Spyro has more of a laser attack that works better if you hold the button and let it fire as one long beam. In fact if you jump and hold the button you slowly fall to the ground and do massive DPS. so the final boss sending you into the air means way more DPS in the battle. And if you replay the game with the Dark Spyro form that trick works so well bosses die really easily. It's really fun to plow through the game like this.

    • @cartergamegeek
      @cartergamegeek 6 лет назад

      I only remember that because of my friend Sean doing that and the one time i played the game i did use that trick in the final boss. Because of that trick in the pirate area is a boss you need to work your way down to but if you use this trick you can kill the boss before even landing on the platform. That is how i remember it anyway. The third game also has broken secret dark magic and cheat codes for unlimited magic. But in this game it's all about the laser DPS. So air attacks are better because it also locks on a bit so you just ride off this death beam DPS that is really unbeatable. We played the game on the Wii but it looks to be the same framework so the trick would have likely worked for you. Dark Spyro is busted. The third game we also played on the Wii so you have one crazy game ahead of you. But i find it really fun. The magic is really nice in that one in my opinion.

    Definitely liking the new format, especially with the puns and jokes.
    After Dawn of the Dragon, are there any plans on doing the handheld games, or maybe Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure? Maybe a comparison video when Reignited Trilogy comes out?
    The handheld games complicate the timeline a bit.
    Spyro: Season of Ice, Spyro 2: Season of Fire, and Spyro: Attack of the Rhynocs branch after Year of the Dragon; Wikipedia desciribes it as an 'alternate sequel' to the original trilogy. I don't remember these games being too long, and could probably be grouped into a single video.
    There's also Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto's Rampage and Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy, which seem to have no place in the timeline, and may not even be canon.
    Then there's Spyro: Shadow Legacy, which is a RPG, and is a sequel to Hero's Tail; since it's part of the original story line, it may be deserving of it's own video.
    I know nothing about Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure since I never got into Skylanders, so I'm not sure how much of a story there is, or if the story is another reboot or a spiritual successor or something. It'd be interesting to see though, and you make some of the best Spyro videos of all the content creators on here.

    I wanted to like this game when I got it, but I was just filled with frustration while playing it. I couldn't find any of the upgrades that would help improve Spyro's health and magic meter, and I often got one shotted often because of it especially against the bosses. I especially had the hardest time in the pirate arena of all places against the scorpion enemies. The platforming was so terrible especially the part where I had to flip a switch and dragon time across a series of platforms just to pass a gate which I failed often. It also didn't help that the same gate also killed me in one of the attempts. I don't even know how I managed to stay persistent through all that time even when I finished the game. Had I known about the dark spyro cheat, I probably would have abused it more often.

    I’m a few months late on this, but I just watched this video and wanted to chime in after seeing the scores the game was given at the end - I had both the PS2 and GBA versions growing up, and of the two, the GBA was s o much better than the console versions. It’s been a long time, and that combined with my poor memory from ADHD makes it hard to remember any specifics about it, but like the first game’s GBA version, Eternal Night on the GBA was a side scroller. The difficulty, at least as a child, was tricky at times, but not completely unreasonable like the console version sometimes felt like... and in the end, the GBA version was the one I ultimately saw to completion. To this day, I haven’t beaten my old PS2 copy of Eternal Night, and even with the temptation I felt watching this, I find the urge to pull out my PS2 and try it again overridden by the urge to pull out the GBA version, slap it into the GB Player I picked up last week, and see how it runs on a full screen, rather than the tiny GBA SP I grew up with.

    The Legend of Spyro The Eternal Night was personally one of my favorite games of all time.
    Although it lacked a lot of things like the Soft locks and the Painfully dreadful fights. I can't let myself stop enjoying it. The soundtrack also, I've been listening to it for over 50 hours I know that for sure. I sleep with it to calm myself, It's too good. Dawn of the Dragon even got better music that's so calming. Although Eternal night is by far the favorite one in the trilogy. It still can be improved by a heck ton.
    And from within The soundtrack, one of my favorite songs of all time is there too. Broken Soul. Still after When I first played it and still now. I still tear up from how personal and how I feel with it. It's been there with my for the saddest of times. and I just am in love with the beginning of the song.
    I could write novels over this game and it's music. But that's how I'll say it.
    Thanks for making the long review despite all the difficult moments! I loved every single bit of it! even with the critics. And It's all true. I still kinda enjoy the ships part. but Scab is a nightmare nonetheless.

      The soundtrack is wonderful for this game, I'd happily spend my time listening to the choir singing, or even This Broken Soul in the credits! DotD should be a treat for the ears then. :)
      And I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds Skabb difficult! Thought I was bad at the game. >.>

    They could of just added a difficulty setting to the Eternal Night, rather than just make the single player campaign flat out hard. Heck they could of added a difficulty setting that the player has to unlock by playing ALL the difficulties, kinda like in Uncharted and The Last of Us

    Spyro can't use his Elemental stuff not because of Cinder, it's because of DUS Machina. The magic every game developer uses at the beginning of each new installment of a sequel game in a franchise for some or most characters.

    A couple of points about the story (and also my THIRD comment on this video - I said I'd have a lot to talk about, didn't I?);
    The guardians don't know the Chronicler. They've never met him, nor has anyone in the last 1000 years. They don't even know if he really even exists.
    The final fight in the Celestial Caves being a reskin of Cynder, while lazy from a gameplay/development perspective, makes sense in a narrative one. The SPOOKY ETHEREAL VOICE in that level says you'll have to "face alone what you fear most". So that boss is probably just an elemental spirit that takes the form of the greatest fear of whoever is fighting it. In this case, it takes the form of Cynder's corrupted form, as not only is that what Spyro fears will happen to Cynder if he doesn't save her, but also because he was absolutely terrified of her in A New Beginning at first, and he likely still has some of that fear leftover.

    Which would you rather play again, Enter the Dragonfly or this? For me, while both are bad, I can still find enjoyment out of EtD, while this game is just boring and painfully difficult

    So, about the strafing battles, if you hold the ranged attack, you actually shoot further, making it easier to hit without waiting for them to close in.

    I recently played and completed this game and to be honest, I was going into this thinking of how much hate I would have for this game compared to the previous game based on what I've heard but now after playing it, I can't really say I actually did hate the game, it can easily get boring at times and very hard at times (most of which is because of the regular enemies being a lot harder then the actual bosses!), but I personally did actually find some enjoyment from playing this game, more then Enter The Dragonfly but somewhat on par with A New Beginning more or less.

      I liked the story a lot more than the gameplay, and I hope I didn't sound too harsh when I talked about it. It's not the worst thing I've ever played, that's for sure!

    Again, we have a wonderfully unbiased review of a TLoS game, and I really liked it. You yet again, presented the facts, and voiced your criticisms without relying on meaningless hate speech. May I just say, I told you! I told you that you were going to find parts of this game painful, but you doubted me lol. Keep up the good work, and trust me, the last game in the trilogy is much better than this one.

    Oh I fully agree with you on that. I HATED the pirate ship level. It dragged on for WAY too long, Skabb was bullshit (keep in mind that I don't swear often), and the checkpoints....UGH!! As for the crystal thing at the end. It's the Dragon Time power Spyro had from the start. He just used what what was left of it in a different way, so my personal theory about that is that he didn't know if he COULD do it, but he wanted to try SOMETHING.
    Oh yea, and for that stupid endurance battle before the actual Well of Souls, A friend of mine managed to get through that by starting it and then flying back to a platform by the infinitely respawning Green gem. Then just fire the lightning bombs until they're all dead. The long-range guys can still hit you, so it isn't a foolproof strategy, but it does make things a heck of a lot easier to manage.
    And I loved playing as Dark Spyro on a replay of the game after completing all five Dragon Challenges.
    Awesome review Tori. Eagerly looking forward to your Dawn of the Dragon retrospective. (That's my personal favorite of the entire trilogy.)

      And I suppose Ignitus told him in ANB that in times of crisis he'd awaken powers he didn't know he had. So I guess it's not complete bullshit!
      I didn't realise the gems respawned there, doh! I could have saved myself so much hassle. :/
      Thanks so much for watching Train! :)
