@MP And here is The Legend of Spyro with Malefor replaced with Ripto as the villain, it feels like an improvement. ruclips.net/video/GTO1rYNiMfs/видео.html
@MP I feel like it’s because he had absolutely no presence in the first 2 games at all. Unlike say, Sauron, who never physically appears in the LOTR movies but is a constant looming threat thanks to the Ring and the Nazgul. Cynder gets far more attention and I think Malefor is only mentioned once in ANB.
I disagree on the whole “you can’t give cute games with cute characters a dark story”. Everything’s possible with a decent development time and good writing.
Hype VoiceActing And funnily enough, in one of his earlier reviews, he said it failed horribly at what it wanted to do, and that he was never going to review it.
Think the 1 thing that was boring was Sparx's VA in DOTD, like sure Billy West is a good guy and I respect him but man his Sparx was and still is unbearable and I still feel this way when the game first came out.
Yeah! Like I was a huge fan of the OG games, played them when i was 5/6. My dad just saw spyro and bought me A New Beginning and I fell in love as I was old enough to not be entertained 24/7 on the simple(ish) platforms of the OG trilogy and it kept me interested and learning new mechanics that carried into other games as I aged. I love the differences. I love Spyro, but the same story over and over again does get old. TLOS kept me entertained for hours and I stand by that these are not bad games. I replay them regularly and still have fun.
@@jeugene807 Tl;dr: Classic Spyro is still a great example of its own genre whilst LoSpyro is outshined by pretty much any other game of its kind. Nostalgia or not, classic Spyro remains a, while not flawless, good set of games. I'd say it is an extra. True, the games have aged, that's out of the question, but they still remain some of the best examples of a classic platformer game one could pick up. Of course those games have flaws, mostly in alternate gameplay styles and the first game being unpolished, which is to be expected, but they are less of a hinderance to the overall experience, which is still mainly focused on headbutting, flaming, and collecting gems while gliding across landscapes. It was and still is fun to play. I'm pretty sure that, if you had to recommend a game from the PS1, Spyro is to be considered just like Crash, although picking up the Reignited Trilogy is most definitely the better choice nowadays. But if someone were to ask you for a game where you can just combo your way through and have fun solving puzzles or destroying hordes of baddies, would you seriously recommend Legend of Spyro over God of War, Devil May Cry or even Okami or Zelda? Because I'm sure that, if you look to the other side, you can see Spyro being recommended over Crash (which I would if difficulty is a concern) or Super Mario 64. Sorry for the long comment, I couldn't just go without explaining in detail.
@@hypertamer9661 Hmm, fair point. The original Spyro trilogy definitely had a larger effect on the franchise than Legends did, but it's no reason to discount the opinions of those who liked it. The point I'm getting at is that nostalgia will feed any opinion, even those about the original Spyro games. While it is certainly not something to base a whole critique around, as both the comments and creator may be seen as doing, it is something to take note of and appreciate. Whether any of us likes it or not, these games made an impact on us all, for better or for worse. Which is really nice to think about now that I put it in words.
Right?? I saw it and there's not a single clip with Spyro talking and I just keep thinking "is he really not going to talk about Elijah fucking Wood voicing Spyro????"
And that in the New Beginning David Spade voiced Sparx, Eternal Night he was voiced by Billy West and in Dawn of the Dragon Sparx was voiced by Wayne Brady! 🥰😊
@@TheGumdropButton I thought Gary Oldman portrayed Ignitus beautifully in the Legend of Spyro! I've always loved and been a huge fan of Gary Oldman! Especially as Serius Black from the Harry Potter series!💖🖤❤
"I just feel like the idea of maturing a cute and cartoony character never makes sense." But Jak tho. You go to elf-boi's romp through the jungle to *I'M GOING TO KILL PRAXIS.* And it wasn't terrible.
"I just feel like the idea of maturing a cute and cartoony character never makes sense." Just because it doesn't make sense to you doesn't me it doesn't make sense to someone else. Just take a look at Goku.
@Keaton Harris I see your point. Okay, so let me explain. Legend of Spyro was going for something different from the start. Yes, it used Spyro as a character, but he might as well be a different character compared to the original. I don't think it's fair to compare the legend trilogy to the Classic trilogy because the Legend trilogy was trying to be it's own thing. That include it's own tone and means of story telling.
Antdude sometimes doesn't speak good, but I think I understand and agree with his sentiment: Rebooting something cute into something gritty is just dumb. Most of the time. Now, Jak at least has justification and stuff rather than "let's start over with DARKNESS".
I'll go as far as to say "Dawn of the Dragon" is underrated. I felt that game had good combat with combos and you could specialize into an element until you eventually maxed out on all at the end. The story wasn't bad, the characters were good. (at least the main characters) Finding everything was somewhat difficult and with the friend, it's even better. And the sound track is actually really good for the most part with some forgettable ones in the mix "A New Beginning" had repetitive combat, which unfortunately makes up a huge part of your game and the story was meh, but there's still 2 more games to play through . Never played "The Eternal Night" But DotD was actually good and it upset me that it gets lumped in with the others just because it's part of the trilogy
I gotta say, I liked the entire trilogy. I like beat-em-up games. However, I don't think I'm a reliable source considering I like the Metal Slug series to the point that I got the Anthology version. (If you don't know what Metal Slug is, a quick Google search should help). My only main problem with Spyro 2 and 3 was WHY COULDN'T HAVE DAVID SPADE STAY FOR THE ENTIRE TRILOGY???? Like, is it just me, or does Sparx sound much more like a wimp in 2 and 3? Plus, I missed the weird jokes and lines he made in Spyro 1, like that **special** line he had right before the Dexterity battle (Again, a quick search will help, but I ((somewhat)) don't condone doing it.) I liked the generic story and the constant enemy-destroying, especially when I discovered the inf breath cheat code. However, I do have to agree that the Spyro 1 tutorials for the elements were far too long, even after completing the game already on a save, you still had to redo the tutorial. Other than that, the trilogy was ok in my opinion.
Ethernal night was kind of the same as new beginning in terms of repetitive stuff. Aside of the story not being linear (u know u dont know what u need to do from the beginning, like in new beggining u knew world ull be in are 3 to save dragons and then final confrontation, ethernal night wasnt as predictable) As for dotd, i will say this Its my favourite game of the trilogy but i can see why its being said as the worst. Lets face it, it was rushed. The transition after second boss didnt feel natural. I am 90 percent sure it was rushed a bit.
One of the reasons why this video (which I thought AntDude reviewed the The Legend of Spyro trilogy already) is one of the weaker AntDude videos is because of that insensitivity. Another thing that i sults me big time if this is meant to be takemliterally is because dragons are one of the most interesting animals of all time.
@@ShibuNub3305 Agreed, Dawn of the Dragon is overall pretty good, but not quite amazing. It at least reclaimed some of what the originals did right in terms of exploration, and honestly, the story of the trilogy as a whole isn't bad, especially in Dawn of the Dragon. The first two are bogged down by way too much repetitive boring combat and would never recommend them to anyone, but Dawn of the Dragon is actually worth playing.
The whole Legend of Spyro trilogy has an incredible soundtrack. My favorites are the Fellmuth Arena from Eternal Night, and the title screen to the first game. There's just something about the music of these games that resonates with me.
Because the music doesn’t do a good job of letting people know “Hey, I’m here too” So really, the music is better when being listened to on their own. That’s not the music’s fault, but more so an issue with the editing
If the movie was actually made it would probably have been one of those awful video game movies like Doom or the Mario movie, and it probably would’ve gotten something like a 12% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Let's not forget that fact that a rumor was placed for a few months saying that a 4th installment of the series was going to be added... then again... wouldn't be a complete dumpster fire. Just probably would've ruined the whole feel of a "trilogy".
Fun fact about David spade! I remember hearing one of the developers of the first LOS game talk about how much he hated working with spade, apparently since he was new to video game voice acting he didn’t know how to properly voice Sparx and got very rude with the voice directors and developers. They did not ask him back because of this. I wish I could remember who said this, but the man had a RUclips channel and worked on the LOS trilogy.
Dragoncurse4 At least we got the amazing voice line in the... second or third game that I haven’t played in years but still remember: Spyro: “Sparx, are you all right?” Sparx: “Yeah, I’m fine, my voice keeps changing, the usual.” Went something like that and I loved it. EDIT: ok now I’ve watched the entire video and he mentioned it... and thought it wasn’t funny. Hm.
@@gamegod6859 but not everyone read Adventures, and also incredibly dark stuff only happened in the first gen, like those zombie-Psyducks and Arbok sliced in half. Later on, it's not really any different from the games. Characters are better written, the plot is more solid, but overall, still not dark enough.
As someone who has played all of the good and bad Spyro games, I must say that THIS was an amazing trilogy. It wasn't trying to be cute or imitate the other games, it was just being its own thing, and to that regard, I think they succeeded. It was REALLY good! It's actually kinda hard to go into the reignited trilogy because my mind has been sort of wiped off the more "innocent" Spyro character. It's also hard to appreciate it when my most recent journey with Spyro (before Reignited) was a dark, edgy, epic, and badass adventure where Spyro was the Dragon of prophecy with a dark side buried in him, ALONG with a soundtrack that just pierces my heart. It's so epic. The choir soundtrack for the menu screens, ambiance, and battles were very powerful, and fit the universe LOS took place in, and I could feel the connections of each game that passed (from "New Beginning" to "Dawn"). I think I much prefer THAT Spyro over the innocent nerdy one that has drastically fewer abilities and lore behind him. If 1 thing is absolutely true, it's that LOS Spyro was way more fleshed out and explained AND EXPANDED upon than OG Spyro has ever been, effectively making LOS Spyro very likable, understood, emphasized, and seemingly powerful and important in his world (such as how he is the only type of dragon that can control Aether and Nether). He is just MORE badass than OG Spyro, and Elijah Wood really hit it home with the voice acting. He was a fantastic voice actor for Spyro. I have hope that ONE day, I'm going to launch RUclips and while I am browsing my recommendations, that I see one of 2 things: "The Legend of Spyro: Retold (Remastered)" or "The Legend of Spyro: Pt. 4" (which is very possible because of the sequel bait from Dawn. Feel free to check it out, they make it very open to a sequel in more than one way.) I think a remaster is very likely since it is a separate trilogy than OG and has a fanbase made up of OG & LOS Spyro fans. The universes may be different, but Spyro is Spyro. I absolutely think it would be a massive hit, and I swear it's only a matter of time! A new game *could* happen, but circumstances may vary. "New Beginning" & "Eternal Night" both have the same gameplay feel, while "Dawn" is completely different. If they want to revisit the trilogy but also want to keep a constant game flow then they would have to make a new game. I personally hope it continues because the LOS trilogy is a gold mine for creative freedom/writing. They can quite literally do ANYTHING as long as it remains appropriate to the universe. Let's not forget how they have dragged not just Spyro and Cynder into Skylanders, but the entire *BLOODY* lore from LOS Trilogy. Malephor, ancient dragons used to inhabit the Skylands, Dark Spyro, how the Skylands look so much like Avalar.....what are they doing? It's almost like THEY TOO also want to do something with LOS. If I had to choose, I'd go with LOS all day. Don't even think that I'm calling OG Spyro bad. It's good in its own way. LOS is something separate, and if I had to pick which timeline to spend the rest of my life in, it would be LOS without a shred of doubt.
I played Dawn of the Dragon again on the PS2 for nostalgic reasons. And damn, Iam completely on ur site with everything ure saying. I loved it so much, but it really suprised me how good it still is. (Also the combat, special powers from Spyro and Cynder, the platforming, the explorations, the Story *AND* how all of this together, is this immense blast to play) I loved it, and now I love it even more. Its such an unice and damn good game. I also liked and loved everything about the first two games of this trilogy, *BUT* the gameplay is actually really basic, with some unic things. But still the story, the worlds, and just everything but the gameplay is perfectly done. But Down of the Dragon just nails everything that the first two games was trying!
@purple-cat Dawn of the Dragon is just the perfect "epic dragon adventure" game, everything in this game is so unice and fits and adds so perfectly to this world. But it is also for hardcore gamers, that wants good gameing mechanics, (...yeah, I just said this in such a gramma because Iam german...sry) instead of game mechanics that drives u even deeper in the world, like a GTA5 did, or Dawn of the Dragon. Because Dawn of the Dragon does both! Its challenging, and u need to get use to: the combat & combos, the diffrent elements from both characters and the platforming techniques. But also all of this adds perfectly to the imagination of being this legendary dragon in this edgy and epic adventure! Thanks for reading this opinion of a big Fan of OG Spyro and the LOS Spyro one.
@purple-cat how old were YOU when you played the OG spyro games? Because I played both and, to me, the OG spyro games suck compared to the legend of Spyro trilogy.
I started with the original Spyro games, but out of all the games, the Legend series was, and always has been, my most favorite. A unique combat system, which would later evolve further until Dawn of the Dragon. Awesome soundtrack. And one of my more favorite parts about the series was how dark it was. It wasn't as goofy or cartoony as past games. You played as a hero that's suddenly thrust into a position of responsibility that he's not sure he really wants. And he gains new friends and learns more and more about his growing powers over time. Then comes the Eternal Night, where Spyro relearns everything from scratch with the help of the mysterious Chronicler and of course on another quest to stop the titicular Eternal Night, and try to prevent another attempt at Malefor's rebirth. However, that ends up going wrong, and Malefor returns, and begins the three year war that Spyro, Cynder and Sparx were in a magic hibernation for. Now begins the final game of the trilogy, where things are different, and you play as two characters now in a tag-team. Dawn of the Dragon was the darkest of the three games, especially when getting into the final stages of the game that leads to Malefor. But I will never forget my experiences with the games.
I liked that game in all aspects except one: being chained to a braindead AI that basically refuses to do anything for itself and is holding you back half the time.
A large majority of them refuting more than likely started with tlos. Although, opinion will differ. I started with og spyro, and that was it, never new the rest exited. But while I dont mind change (i have a few ideas), these games dont look or play good. I dont like G.O.W so tlos' combat was meh to me. And the overall story for the series was mediocre at best.
a bit late to comment (actually two months lol) buuut that's so true. xD I loved tlos and I wish they made a reignited trilogy of that too. also, I actually did play the original Spyro the Dragon, too. sadly I didn't have every game like other Spyro fans (to be precised, I had spyro the dragon (1), tlos1 & tlos3) but with reignited I now got the opportunity to play spyro 2 and 3 now. :3 anyways, I have to admit, tlos wasn't all good - especially combat of 1 and 2 (I started playing tlos2 on an emulator a short time ago and actually gave up on the same enemies) and also the tutorials were annoying. however, tlos3 did a good job in that regard, plus I loved the trilogy for its story so a remake could make combat better and be an amazing reboot of these games.
@@tyler60904 hmm... maybe. but I love the story of tlos too much (and especially cynder) sooo I'd be hyped for a remake. xD but a new game... yeah sure maybe. I'm always open towards new stuff.

I do like how the trilogy is very lore based, but maybe one day we can fuse the trilogy with the remake of the original. Not too dark, not too campy, full of fun and quirky characters, very lore based, some platforming and a bit more combat maybe. It would certainly be an interesting attempt, if nothing else.
One of my biggest wishes besides sequels for both series or a re-release/remasters for Legends(since they need to be on the same console someday)...is near AAA game where Spyro and Legends Spyro have to team up. An into the Spyroverse game in a way.. I know that might be a lot to wish for, but the team who made Crash 4 know that the fandom is there and waiting. They've made the Reignited Trilogy, now the fans want more..
I grew up with these games and really enjoyed them as a kid, mostly because I didn't compare them to the originals since I never played the originals (was too young and didn't own a console at the time) I went in to this trilogy with no expectations or hypes, just played it, loved dragons, loved beating the shit out of enemies no matter how repetitive, loved developing my powers, loved the colors etc. So I can understand your points and can actually agree with most of them, but these games will always have a special place in my heart.
That first sentence of yours kind of cuts right to the crux of why this was a bad review. There was no open mindedness on display here, Legend of Spyro were good games but people go into them expecting more of the same and leave disappointed because of it. I really enjoy both trilogies for different reasons.
@@ravenfrancis1476 No it doesn't. But the review said he was going to approach this independently, then immediately tied almost every complaint he had to the games departing from the original trilogy. Comparing the legend of Spyro to the original trilogy is like comparing apples and oranges.. they are both good in their own way. And honestly I love these games

Dawn of the dragon actually impressed me. I absolutely loved the story and character design. Also the gameplay felt so much bettter and less repetitive than its previous title. I’m not gonna lie , i still go back and replay the third installment to this very day. I also enjoy a dark story with Spyro. When people say it doesn’t make sense for spyros cartoon character to be put in this scenario I question their logic because Spyro is a fucking D R A G O N and dragons are originally known for being killing machines so it felt nice to see my favorite childhood game become more mature as I continued to grow up. I heard once that there was plans to make mature rated spyros with blood and all that jazz but it was obviously canceled due to the backlash of this trilogy. I think I might be one of the only people who enjoyed the changes Spyro has been through.
Tman 1682 That makes no sense? He called it a good game. That’s his opinion, not yours. He didn’t say it was his favorite game either. Quit being elitist

@@hecker4547 Agreed! I loved how the elements complemented the combat system, and the more serious tone that many of the locations had. Might I add that the final area of the game (the dark castle thing) is amazing. Also Cynder best girl
I didn't like them but they weren't the worst games in the world. Ok the first one was... but the other two I'd rate 3/10 for the 2nd one and maybe 4/10 for Dawn of the Dragon. Parts of that were okay.
I remember being completely drawn in by this game's story and worldbuilding. The characters, the voice acting, the story, and the music were all so good and compelling! Makes me so happy to see a lot of others who feel the same way!
Suprised you didn't mention the fact that Spyro and Cynder being connected in the third game actually gets used in them for things BESIDES keeping players near each other. For example it gets used for climbing walls, where there isn't enough room to jump from one patch the next, instead you build momentum on the chain to swing over to the rope. Or on the same area you praised for opening up, the mechanic gets used to pull a river up-stream. In that wall level too, you complained about it going back to just beat-em-up, yet that whole part you are alternating between destroying towers, fighting enemies, and repairing the cannon in the middle: You're doing a ton more than just "mash A to beat enemies"... Which doesn't even work with half of them anyways.
Not to mention the combat now has hit counts which contribute to the fury bar, and the grabbing mechanic, which rewards you for using it cuz hit streaks while gripping an enemy give you more fury. Spyro and Cynder also have different fighting styles; Spyro is strength and power sacrificing speed, and Cynder is Speed and Mana sacrificing health. If you're playing co-op, it's fun to think and work together with the person you're playing with. The gameplay was pretty awesome for its time.
@@n4sos I presume not. He said that it's just endless button mashing after the Valley of Avalar, even though there are a lot more moves to play with, such as the elemental breaths and the grab attacks. There's a lot more variety in how you attack enemies than the first two games. Hell, even Caddicarus provided a better review of the game, and it was only a 5 minute long section. Also, I don't remember that glitch of one of the dragons getting stuck ever happening in my game.

It IS lazy, because while he's correct about how there's nothing but fighting and walking, he completely ignores everything that's good about it, or at least where people tried and did well. Let me give you an example of what he did here with a game you probably played: "Crash Bandicoot is a repetitive jump-mashing game with nice landscapes but in the end it's all the same, so I couldn't be bothered to finish it" If he doesn't like it that's fine, but just saying it's all the same and not even finishing one of the reviewed games? I liked David Spade best, but sadly the actor was apparently an asshole on set, so they didn't hire him back. I didn't like the following two voice actors at all... Billy West's Sparx was too much of a coward with too high of a voice, and Wayne Brady's Sparx felt so cringey when he tried to make jokes, as well as his voice just seemed wrong for Sparx...

@@Faeborn I like how you're complaining about people ignorantly writing off the new games, while also being ignorant and writing off the original trilogy as "trash" and "basically the same game." There's a reason the original Spyro trilogy was beloved (even with the first one being kinda dated and some of 3's alternate gameplay styles being a tad clunky,) and this trilogy had a mediocre reception at best. The first trilogy are some of the best of the collectathon subgenre (especially Spyro 2 and 3,) whereas these games had interesting ideas, but never fleshed anything out beyond a basic level (or just had some really bad design choices that held them back.) If someone wants a solid 3D collectathon, the first Spyro Trilogy is some of the better ones to recommend, the Legend of Spyro trilogy is just outshined in almost every way at its genre.

I was introduced to Spyro through this series. Personally I loved this series but damn I didn't expect people to bash this series. Makes me sad because it was actually decent 😕
@@RedTed_Indentation45 It They bash it for the repetitive parts mostly not engaging them and for being tedious. And the boss fights being underwhelming. They're not wrong, those are the flaws. Still, nearly every other aspect of the games is AT LEAST likable. I could complain about "Avalar's raft needing a key for its keys", and "needing water buckets to put a fire out while ice and wind breath are a thing" more than anything about ANB or my favorite: TEN, being an improved (elements-wise), more difficult game. Also Dark Spyro. Wish there was more of that. What I love about this series most is the fact the story isn't fully executed. It had plenty of potential for world-building and whatnot, leaving a lot to the imagination. On the other hand I was hoping for the movie to come out. Cutting out what a lot of people don't like about the games: padding for time. And focusing purely on the story.
5:11 Rayman? He went from a super cuddly and childishly bright game where everything have eyes to suddenly the world being depressed and polluted, everyone is enslaved and Rayman has lost his will to fight when you meet him and is captured while the world is filler with murderous protruding thorn vines and undead monsters. And Rayman 3 has a dark setting too, literally, it's more shaded. But that worked. And Sly Cooper got really serious with the sequels with dealing with loss and serious issues of guilt and abandonment.
I can't believe I am sitting here rewatching this video 5 years later. I am just annoyed listening to him go "Who asked for a sequel, I am sure no one did". I am one of those who loved this trilogy, and I want a remaster of it ASAP.
The first game in the trilogy was actually my introduction to the Spyro series. I was incredibly disappointed as a kid that the old games weren't story based beat'em'ups. My small child brain couldn't comprehend the change in play styles.
@GalacticHypernova The Eternal Night on DS isn't that bad since it had the Crash Of The Titans on DS treatment but Dawn Of The Dragon had the same treatment as Mind Over Mutant on DS
way late comment but.........granted this is one of the only franchises (that i can think of) that rebooted, was hated by the old fans, but was still able to create a new fandom that loved and supported the game enough for the creators to finish the trilogy. The fandom still survives through fan art, fan-fiction, as well as some better and new explanations for some parts of the game's lore and characters thanks to one of the people who worked on the game, who revealed these insights on their devianart page of That-Spyro-Guy.
@@justinarney3050 It isn't as much hated by old fans as by nostalgia blind crybabies. Many fans like both takes on franchise. They are far from being worst games in franchise.
Sometimes I feel like I am the only one who love Legend of Spyro. I grew up with the original Spyro games and I love them too, but I love LoS more... Or moreso, I love them in different ways... the game play of the first spyro games are very fun (except for the races and challenges), but they are very thin in story. LoS has such endearing characters and an epic tale. I do wish that they could continue the LoS games and make them more as a combo of the first games and LoS.
The Legend series was actually going to receive it's own movie for the big screen until the rights were sold and Spyro became part of the Skylander franchise. So the film never left production. You may find a few flyers floating on the internet that have the cover of Dawn of the Dragon on it just more polished and with the typical "coming to theaters" and other stuff on it.
@@slayerjohn447 what I remember is that sierra actually was going out of business so they couldn't fund the movie, they ended up selling it to Activision who completed dawn of the dragon and moved onto skylanders, I played skylanders, it was a nice game with puzzles to solve but the whole part of adding spyro probably wasn't the best thing to do
You were supposed to use the motion controls to beat the scorpions. Edit: if you swiped up with the controller while fighting the scorpions, you could have temporarily disarmed them, allowing you to attack.
In other words a game is too hard for me to beat so there for I hate it. I actually learned to stay up in air as long as you can from the scorpions as they can't hit you while you glide around and hit them while still in the air. Then when you finally are able to get a chance head butt their claws up and then fight them, I use ice breath because it keeps one of them frozen for a bit whie I can focus o fighting and take out the other one. To bad he never beat Eternal Knight because otherwise he would have unlocked the best part about Spyro's powers and that is Dark Spyro.
@@CynderSpirit Yeah, that ability is pretty cool. After completing the five dragon challenges afterwards, I decided to play through the entire game with Dark Spyro. It was pretty fun.
Fully agreed. The storyline and character development is absolutely amazing. It's a shame the gameplay ruins it all... Except for DotD, that's actually decent and fun to play through imo.
The scorpions in The Eternal Night are not hard to beat at all. There's just a pattern of combat moves you need to figure out to beat them (disarm them of their claws first and then hit), after that it's fairly easy to get past them. You obviously didn't even try to figure it out because the game was boring for you which is fair enough, but you were talking about the fight like it's incredibly hard and that's very misleading.
Especially when there's a clear hint that keeps showing up during the battle on how to make them vulnerable. You can even see it in this video. He was clearly not paying attention.
I was about to say that too, though I forgot the combo. My 11 year (or so) old ass beat tbose first try, it's obvious he couldn't be fucked to try another day when he's not salty
Tea Trumbić At first I was thinking that he just needed to master the use of time manipulation too, though he did actually use it during the fight, but there’s actually a method to beat it that I guess he didn’t notice.
The way I always did it was run to get only one behind me, use dragon time to turn around and knock their claws up, jump and hit them, and repeat. It really isn't that hard..
As an OG Spyro fan, I viewed Legends as more "weird little experiment I don't personally care for" than "what trilogy? Spyro hasn't had any games since Hero's Tail"... Basically, I respect that it was a game made with quality put into it. Heck, even enjoy the thematic elements when divorced from the gameplay. Now, SKYLANDERS on the other hand...
What's wrong with Skylanders? I can agree with not liking Spyro's design, but you have to remember its not even his game. Heck, he's just a character who happens to be in the series that you can use - Spyro has virtually no impact on the story whatsoever. Plus, Skylanders put Spyro on the map and introduced him to a whole new generation of fans (including myself). I guarantee if it wasn't for Skylanders, I never would've known he existed - let alone had a several classic game titles.
@@swaggasaurus4837 The first game had "Spyro's Adventure" in the title, Activision used that to bring in Spyro fans when he had nothing to do with the story.
It's an opinion. Plus, the whole difference thing is to assist his how he thinks about it. But the reason he doesn't like these games is because it's dull to him
"And if these games had any semblance of the previous games, the ones that made Spyro a name in the first place, I would have been a lot more interested." There's the problem. The Legends series really can't be judged based on the original trilogy. They are two completely different game genres. One is a collecting platformer, and the other is an action adventure with RPG elements. It's complete with different tones, which are not supposed to be the same. Combat was probably the part of the game I got the most hung up on, but it also happened to be one of my favorite parts. When it wasn't horrendously difficult, I thought it was very satisfying to blow up dozens of enemies with a fully-leveled breath weapon. However, there were times when I would get stun-locked between several enemies that could kill me in 3 hits... after I had already defeated 7 waves of them. I was never able to get the third game, so I won't comment on that, but I really enjoyed the world-building of the first two.
I remember having a hard time trying to get Eternal Night for the DS, I really wanted it cus Spyro. I finally got my hands on it and I beat it that very day. It's stupidly short and I remember it leaving on a cliffhanger, so it left a rather large sour taste in my mouth.
"You can't give cute games with cute characters a dark story" Is quite possibly AntDude's worst take I know of. I love you man, but this is objectively a wrong statement
I respectfully disagree. But I guess it depends on what you mean by edgy. For me, I see a cookie cutter story. Where they try to make it so serious but ultimately failing at doing so through lack of creative writing in attempts to give a character a dramatic past. Though I do not consider it Full on edge. I do see it sprinkled in the game for sure.
Legend of Spyro is good for the story, but Dawn of the Dragon is the best one out of all three cause it had a bigger budget then the first two. Only 1,000,000 was used for the first two which is nothing to make a game. The French company that developed Dotd changed it for the better, but they went out of business in 2013
As a Sonic fan watching this dude, listening to him clamor on about how "you can't give a cute game with cute characters a dark story" gets seriously repetitive from his Sonic '06 and Shadow reviews. The darker stories of *both* of these franchises expand on the characters and worlds. Don't understand how that's a negative for reviewers like this outside of "ooh dark stories bad"
@Mun man 08 That's a trend with this specific reviewer. It doesn't matter how good the execution is in telling a darker story, such as is the case here, but rather that they're even telling a darker story. He's going in with preconceived biases and tearing it down on a conceptual level rather than its actual execution.
I really enjoyed the Legend of Spyro games 💕 The atmosphere was enticing, there was a greater sense of story and you could be more creative with the combat The worlds are what really interested me, though - there was colour, lovely lighting and the soundtrack complemented it well
@@Tobi638 It's more retardely grandiose. According to Death Battle (so take it with a grain of salt) they interpretted his fire breath being able to destroy a planet...
I’d love to see this trilogy remade by a new group of passionate developers, changing up the gameplay to make it actually enjoyable while keeping the art aesthetic and the bones of the story.
Woodsy I grew up with the original trilogy and loved spyro 1-3. I was like 8 when i got a new beginning as a birthday gift and I cried that night because I couldnt believe what they did to spyro.
Woodsy these games aren’t bad but aren’t good either, very mediocre. Now Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly and Crash Purple/Spyro Orange were complete trash though. A Hero’s Tail wasn’t that bad either. The rest of the series (besides the remakes) is mediocre.
Woodsy i remember loving the first 3 games and A Hero's Tail, then i saw Dawn of the Dragon somewhere and thought "oh,are they rebooting spyro now?".Needless to say,i was confused, having no idea whomst this Cynder was supposed to be and why they turned my boy Hunter into someone's fursona
Dawn of Dragons has so much Lord of the Ring inspiration that they even had hired Elijah Wood for voicing Spyro ... Also Mark Hamil was voicing the vilain
Critic reviews. didn't receive decent marketing lifespan, and I can see why with plots introduced in the game not striking a home run. I grew up with this trilogy so I'm with you in that regard
@@jiraiyathesagesaiyan1978 Yeah, the trilogy didn't gain enough traction for a multitude of reasons that weren't the game's faults....they were given a very small budget, they were given almost no budget on marketing, and while they were allowed the release all 3 games, they had to do it on very inconsistent consoles. I love it to death though. It needs a rerelease or a remaster like Re-ignited, and since Spyro and Legends Spyro are officially tow alternate Spyros, it would be interesting to see a teamup.
@@9751matt you and me both Sony's destructive pattern is allocating insufficient value to IP's that got the most potential. None the less still deserves attention for what it is and what it aspired to accomplish Intuitions telling me it's gonna get recognition one day
I don't know, to LoS' credit it at least tried to give it a unique spin while keeping some aspects of childlike charm and warm colors in there. Shadow just went full on Edge-Mode with the guns, incredibly bleak color palette, and unnecessary swear words.
Hunter was upgraded with next gen graphics, the third was about a fantasy Cheetah and the devs did it right, you were going to expect a Skyrim-style Cheetah, not a Cartoon Anthropomorphic Cheetah.
If you compare both sagas, what you get will be a desepcion, the game says "a new beginning", criticizing him for taking a new story is stupid, the most logical thing would be to criticize it by itself without comparisons, the trilogy is quite good and in comparison to the first game of the original saga is much better
These games were rushed...hence why alot of repetitiveness...Dawn of the Dragon was supposed to have more content. The story lore and music are incredible. Activision cut alot of shit out :/
These games may be dark but remember that the villain in Spyro 3 was trying to commit genocide on babies.
True
@MP And here is The Legend of Spyro with Malefor replaced with Ripto as the villain, it feels like an improvement.
ruclips.net/video/GTO1rYNiMfs/видео.html
@MP I feel like it’s because he had absolutely no presence in the first 2 games at all. Unlike say, Sauron, who never physically appears in the LOTR movies but is a constant looming threat thanks to the Ring and the Nazgul. Cynder gets far more attention and I think Malefor is only mentioned once in ANB.
And they say mascot platformers can’t be dark....
Gnasty put all the dragons in suspended animation just for calling him ugly. And then did it again.
I dunno if that counts as dark.
I disagree on the whole “you can’t give cute games with cute characters a dark story”. Everything’s possible with a decent development time and good writing.

Pretty late as well, but the EarthBound Trilogy is a good example of that. Even the Wind Waker as well.

i loved the trilogy a lot as a kid... never found it boring at any point.
Think the 1 thing that was boring was Sparx's VA in DOTD, like sure Billy West is a good guy and I respect him but man his Sparx was and still is unbearable and I still feel this way when the game first came out.
DW i lived the game to I sadly never finished it bc my dad snapped the disk
Me too
The story was was kept me going in the series, it was so dang interesting! I also liked the difficulty of eternal night, felt like dark souls
Ahh, I love that the comment section is showing so much love for the Legend of Spyro. I thought I was the only one who loved that trilogy.
How much nostalgia there is.
It's all so biased it hurts to see, not a single good comment that isn't "that game was my childhood and I loved it".
@@hypertamer9661 Isn't nostalgia what fuels the love for the old Spyro trilogy?
@@jeugene807
Tl;dr: Classic Spyro is still a great example of its own genre whilst LoSpyro is outshined by pretty much any other game of its kind.
Facts the proof is out there these games are amazing
Why doesnt he mention that Elijah wood voices spyro? I actually liked him as spyro.
He definitely added a lot of depth to the character. Went from "plucky hero" to "deeply troubled hero forced into a role he didn't want"
And Gary Oldman was in it???

Just because it doesn't make sense to you doesn't me it doesn't make sense to someone else.
Yes it was. Jak 2 overdarkened the Jak franchise to oblivion. And it looks like a drag to play
@@vilmy2136 Have you played Jak 2? It may be different but that doesn't make it bad.
Antdude sometimes doesn't speak good, but I think I understand and agree with his sentiment:
Rebooting something cute into something gritty is just dumb.
Dawn of the dragon is sooo good :)
Funny enough, eternal night on gba was amazingly fun and short so easy to deal with
I gotta say, I liked the entire trilogy.
They were all good, people just for some reason think if a game has Spyro in it as a main character, it has to be exactly like the first trilogy.
Ethernal night was kind of the same as new beginning in terms of repetitive stuff. Aside of the story not being linear (u know u dont know what u need to do from the beginning, like in new beggining u knew world ull be in are 3 to save dragons and then final confrontation, ethernal night wasnt as predictable)
As for dotd, i will say this
Its my favourite game of the trilogy but i can see why its being said as the worst.
Lets face it, it was rushed. The transition after second boss didnt feel natural. I am 90 percent sure it was rushed a bit.

How can you talk about these games without bringing up their incredible soundtrack?
TurnaboutVA YES! 🙌
The whole Legend of Spyro trilogy has an incredible soundtrack. My favorites are the Fellmuth Arena from Eternal Night, and the title screen to the first game. There's just something about the music of these games that resonates with me.
Because the music doesn’t do a good job of letting people know “Hey, I’m here too”
So really, the music is better when being listened to on their own. That’s not the music’s fault, but more so an issue with the editing
TurnaboutVA thanks you!

Oh boy. Let's be glad that didn't happen.
Not only that, but it was gonna be from the director of Spawn. Guess it’s safe to say we REALLY dodged a bullet.

Same. If I ever had the chance to play this Trilogy, I’d happily do it all again. In a hummingbird’s heartbeat.
I was but a wee ankle-biter (10 probably) but I’ve still faithfully retained my love for the LOS Trilogy
I played Dawn of the Dragon again on the PS2 for nostalgic reasons.
And damn, Iam completely on ur site with everything ure saying.
I loved it so much, but it really suprised me how good it still is.
(Also the combat, special powers from Spyro and Cynder, the platforming, the explorations, the Story *AND* how all of this together, is this immense blast to play)
I loved it, and now I love it even more.
But it is also for hardcore gamers, that wants good gameing mechanics, (...yeah, I just said this in such a gramma because Iam german...sry)
instead of game mechanics that drives u even deeper in the world, like a GTA5 did, or Dawn of the Dragon.
I'm I one of the few people that actually loved that trilogy?

anyways, I have to admit, tlos wasn't all good - especially combat of 1 and 2 (I started playing tlos2 on an emulator a short time ago and actually gave up on the same enemies) and also the tutorials were annoying. however, tlos3 did a good job in that regard, plus I loved the trilogy for its story so a remake could make combat better and be an amazing reboot of these games.

I love the Trilogy!
The gameplay was pretty awesome for its time.
did he even play to the end of DotD?
@@n4sos I presume not. He said that it's just endless button mashing after the Valley of Avalar, even though there are a lot more moves to play with, such as the elemental breaths and the grab attacks. Also, I don't remember that glitch of one of the dragons getting stuck ever happening in my game.

The first trilogy are some of the best of the collectathon subgenre (especially Spyro 2 and 3,) whereas these games had interesting ideas, but never fleshed anything out beyond a basic level (or just had some really bad design choices that held them back.) The scorpions in The Eternal Night are not hard to beat at all. Tea Trumbić At first I was thinking that he just needed to master the use of time manipulation too, though he did actually use it during the fight, but there’s actually a method to beat it that I guess he didn’t notice.
Ori Kohav Actually, I think he did the knock up attack during 13:48.
The way I always did it was run to get only one behind me, use dragon time to turn around and knock their claws up, jump and hit them, and repeat. It really isn't that hard..
I used to love this trilogy.. actually.. I still love it. It’ll always have a place in my heart.
ShadwSonic the only reason why I acknowledge the existence of skylanders is because I played it when I was younger
Funny enough I am an OG spyro fan and the Legends spyro fan as well. And a fan of the Ignited trilogy.
@@mrbeep8096 All three good and Legend deserve a remake.

Legend of spyro is actually good just because it's different it doesn't mean it's bad
It's not because of it beign something different, but because it's done pretty poorly
It's an opinion. Plus, the whole difference thing is to assist his how he thinks about it. But the reason he doesn't like these games is because it's dull to him

I like the story a lot better
It isn't because it's different though. Even as beat-em-ups these games are fucking dull.

"And if these games had any semblance of the previous games, the ones that made Spyro a name in the first place, I would have been a lot more interested."
There's the problem.
Didn't even cover the DS versions,UnSuCrIsEbD
Iron Pro It’s not like the DS versions were any better 🤷🏾♂️
I remember having a hard time trying to get Eternal Night for the DS, I really wanted it cus Spyro.
I finally got my hands on it and I beat it that very day. It's stupidly short and I remember it leaving on a cliffhanger, so it left a rather large sour taste in my mouth.
Sammy D you missed nothing, it was really bad for the DS
Don't forget the GBA versions
NoobSlayerAdvanced The GBA games were okay. If you’re talking about Spyro Orange, that game is god awful.
"You can't give cute games with cute characters a dark story"
Is quite possibly AntDude's worst take I know of. I love you man, but this is objectively a wrong statement
And also selectively forget that his favorite series has very dark stories. the one with the fluff ball that swallows everything...

A lot of people are calling this trilogy "edgy".
...No? Sure, it's more serious, but it's not trying too hard to be.
in this day and age, anything with even the smallest amount of dark themes is labeled as "edgy"
@@ADragonNerd I know, right? I feel it's especially directed towards slightly older games.
Finally, some common sense
I respectfully disagree. But I guess it depends on what you mean by edgy.
For me, I see a cookie cutter story. Where they try to make it so serious but ultimately failing at doing so through lack of creative writing in attempts to give a character a dramatic past.
Though I do not consider it Full on edge.
I do see it sprinkled in the game for sure.
It's "edgy" mostly because of the insane focus on combat, Spyro is not an action game.
I really love this trilogy!!! Especially Dawn of the dragon!
Legend of Spyro is good for the story, but Dawn of the Dragon is the best one out of all three cause it had a bigger budget then the first two. Only 1,000,000 was used for the first two which is nothing to make a game. The French company that developed Dotd changed it for the better, but they went out of business in 2013
For better or for worse.
@@mangleman25 I agree. I started noticing this since his Sonic Forces review which is by far the worst review he's done in my opinion.
Shadow is bad in that I think. Sonic 06 HAD potential, it has good moments, but well the time travel kinda ruins it.

I really enjoyed the Legend of Spyro games 💕
The atmosphere was enticing, there was a greater sense of story and you could be more creative with the combat
The worlds are what really interested me, though - there was colour, lovely lighting and the soundtrack complemented it well
Dawn of the Dragon was awesome
Tommy Howell that’s just your opinion
Shadow the Dragon
Edgy The Dragon.
Smart Alec Spyro and the Corner of Edge.
To give this series at least one small victory. It's not nearly as ridiculously edgy as Shadow the Hedgehog.
@@Tobi638 It's more retardely grandiose. According to Death Battle (so take it with a grain of salt) they interpretted his fire breath being able to destroy a planet...
You mean BioLizard?
I’d love to see this trilogy remade by a new group of passionate developers, changing up the gameplay to make it actually enjoyable while keeping the art aesthetic and the bones of the story.
The series itself was meh, but Cynder is great. Or at least, she's better than Ember was in A Heroes Tail. And I ~~liked~~ A Heroes Tail.
That's not really saying much when Ember was literally just for 1 dialog scene and never appeared again in that game.
@Nightmare who cares
I don't really care for any of these love interest characters.
@Nightmare lol, why are you mad, do you honestly think people like it when you correct them on pointless shit
i love spyros stupid nose that he has instead of a snout like all the other dragons, he truly is special
I remember renting one of these cause I liked the ps1 games and thought they would be similar. Wow was i wrong.

The legend of Spyro is the best trilogy ever. I don't know why is so underrated.

I don't know, to LoS' credit it at least tried to give it a unique spin while keeping some aspects of childlike charm and warm colors in there. Shadow just went full on Edge-Mode with the guns, incredibly bleak color palette, and unnecessary swear words.
If Spyro banged Cynder at the end of the games then...yeah spot on.
“Hunter just looks like a generic Cheetah now.”
…Just like he always did? At least TLOS gave him clothes.
And, you know, a better resolution. I'm surprised people preferred "Poly-hunter" just because he's og.
True, true
