It’s really messed up that you can’t tell the truth about toxic employers and tyrannical miserable bosses. We all have to pretend the company was great and management were all angels. As if there is no way a manager could be a horrible person.

      Yes. It's a circus.
      But when in Rome.....
Also, that's why ppl leave jobs and are always in a pursuit of a better one: because they can't be honest and they are dealing with the system that is dishonest and corrupt.
So, we play the game and are hardly ever satisfied with the work environment because the employer never cares about making work enjoyable, but only profitable at the expense of the employees

I got this question last summer when I interviewed for my current employer. I somehow already knew the principle about not talking negatively about a previous employer in interviews, so I had thought ahead of time how I would want to answer this question if it came up. (Most of my other job changes had been pretty straightforward circumstances like relocating to a new state or graduating and wanting to seek out something that used my degree.) So I said something along the lines of, "My current job has me juggling multiple roles and I want to get back to doing just x, because that is what my degree is in and that's what I'm passionate about." Apparently it worked! Stumbled onto a similar channel within the last few weeks and have just been eager to save up tips for future learning even though I'm not job hunting anymore. 😊😊🌺 🌺

Hey just wanted to share my personal story! I applied for a job in July this year and after reading glassdoor interview reviews I found your name. Per the review I searched you on this platform and started watching all of your videos! Not only are you engaging but you explained things in a way that made interviewing easy! Which obviously is not a small feat! After 2 months of interviewing I did secure an offer and I started this week. This is not only a position in a completely new industry than I have ever worked, but it is also my first salaried job! Something I wasn't sure I would see with no college education. My new role already feels like a great fit after a week! AND I have been getting questions/advice requests from friends, and acquaintances, who have applied with this company and didn't get an offer. Once I had accepted the offer I realized that this company is not an easy interviewing process and its very selective about who is offered any position. My confidence is 100% so through the roof and I am realizing that I am capable of more than I ever thought possible. Thank you for everything! I have no plans to continue job searching, but will still be watching because you make such an intimidating process interesting!!!

So I'm struggling a lot with this question. The current employer I am seeking to start working was actually a doctor of mine. He asked me several times during my routine visits about my job because he was my chiropractor. I occasionally let loose about long hour days and not really getting breaks (yes, while illegal I almost preferred skipping breaks because it was horrible catching back up after being gone an hour. It was still hard on the body). The receptionist and I became friendly and I have discussed with her a health issue I was having that was stress related due to work. So in a way, they know why I chose to leave, but at the same time I still want to make a good impression and not come across as a whiny quitter.

Thank you Madeline (my mom's name) for your valuable tips, examples, ect. My extremely huge gap in my resume after a ~25 years career in the dental field I left the last job of 7 yrs because my boss was a pervert. One time he told me to stand up...to tell me I did a good job, then he spanked my bum in front of everyone. Another time he refused to give me a new cutting disc to cut porcelain, so then I cut my thumb really bad! I chose not to claim L&I and sue him because in some professions the word gets around. I feared that another employee wouldn't hire me because of a law suit. I ended up leaving anyway because I had carpal tunnel syndrome from my years at my career. So I should leave out my issues with my carpal tunnel? When I left I started going to college to change my career, half way through the program my elderly mom was ill and had to move in with me (for 4 years). I was planing on going back to college but then my dad got cancer. Needless to say I couldn't go back because of my responsibilities. Even after my parents passed I still have an even longer gap in my resume...my fault. I REALLY need to get back to work but feel like I need professional help with my huge gap. What should a person do when they have a creepy boss like mine? No HR so no telling what he could say. I have longevity in all my few jobs in life.🌺🍀🍀🍀🍀🌻

What to do if you go straight to the final boss? Like instead of the usual two or three recruiter interviews you are supposed to go to, you end up interviewing the boss due to being referred to by someone in the company already? Honestly it felt odd because it was over the phone they had no resume on me and it was basically all word play.

I have a tricky situation now where I am looking for a new opportunity 9 months after starting a job, but I am not happy with my current employer and I am also underpaid. My company is a tech consultancy and we indeed have many different projects within. However, switching projects will not bump up my pay, and I will still have to deal with the culture I am not excited about. Last week I had an interview where the question "Why are you looking for another job" came up, I recognize that I could have had a better answer prepared but I said I am looking for opportunity to grow professionally, which then followed by their question "but your company has many projects, why not just change the project?". And I completely understand where they coming from but I really don't want to stay with my current company due to many things I do not appreciate. I am still not sure how to answer this interview question in the future :(

Well, in that case I would tell them that I am looking for a better cultural fit.
If asked to elaborate- expand on your personal values, what is important for you to have in a work environment to feel valued, supported, appreciated.
Don't say these things were missing (negative!) but those are important elements for work environment for you to thrive.
So, it's just spinning it a little to avoid sounding straight negative (even if it's honest).

How does that work for a job you were at for 15yrs within a global company. What is the best way to say you left that company for a smaller company. My company has an algorithm system that decides who to reject for a job and who to send their resume to for the hiring manager. My dept is a deadend and hasn't hired anyone knew in 7 years. I've must have applied to 300 jobs and only gotten 5 interviews. They routinely have hiring freezes for a year at a time every couple of years. What's the best way to explain to a small company when they ask why am I leaving such a massive company? Haven't left yet but I'm burnt out and ready for a positive change.

How about this response if I resigned suddenly:
"I was brought onboard with ABC company for the role of Software Engineer II, and my tasks include adding new features, and fixing bugs, but I was also
given the additional task of testing the changes using Specflow and Unit Testing, which are required before pushing the changes into the project before deployment.
However, I couldn't have the changes be approved, because I needed to show proof to the approvers that my changes pass the test case in unit testing and Specflow,
and that takes a majority of my day, which makes me less productive in my work, and I felt that it's time for me to go look for something else,
so I resigned from ABC company, and now I'm looking for a new opportunity where I can be more productive in finishing my tasks, and I do believe that XYZ may be the best place to work at."

One sentence: There was a lack of clear and concise communication that hindered the streamlined completion of tasks for my role.
Another example one sentence: The company changed ownership and in their restructuring of this small company, they let go of those who were split department.
Both actually are ones that I use cause they happened.
