When Robin Williams first read the script for Good Will Hunting. He asked the director Gus Van Sant "Who wrote this". Gus Van Sant said "It was written by these two kids Matt Damon and Ben Affleck". Robin Williams responded "No seriously who wrote this". Then Gus Van Sant responded "Seriously they did". Which completely shocked Robin Williams. Cause there's a depth of writing in this script that few young writers could ever understand.
Gerry was a fascinating antagonist. He didn't mean any real harm to Will or Sean, but he was so wrapped up in himself that he didn't realize how much harm he was causing. Gerry wanted to BE Will, as he was so envious of Will's talent and potential. He just had to have Will by his side and share in his glory. He expected Sean to "fix" Will like a mechanic fixes the brakes on a car.
@@sparksdrinker5650 ..... I'm saying that Gerry was an antagonist. Many films have more than one antagonist. They usually have a primary antagonist and secondary antagonists. Will was indeed his own antagonist. He wanted to be happy and successful, but his own fears and distrust of others were holding him back. Gerry was also an antagonist because he kept hindering Will (and Sean) from finding redemption and closure. Gerry put his own selfish needs ahead of everything, and in doing so, he almost drove Will away for good.
@@Stogie2112 Nah he wasn't perfect but Gerry was not an antagonist. One of the special things about this film is nobody was Will's antagonist except his own demons. Gerry got Will out of jail, got him into therapy, and cared about him with nothing but good intentions.
This view, though common, I believe really misses the point. Gerry wasn’t doing Will “harm.” At the end of the day, people are best off with both types of role models in their lives. Ones that push them, and ones that hold their hand. Having only one or the other only would be harmful.
Robin Williams took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in the movie. The scene where he tells Matt Damon that his late wife used to fart in her sleep was so funny, Damon cracked up laughing nonstop . Even the cameraman cracked up laughing.
It sucks when people say things like he is just a lowly janitor, I used to clean public toilets for a living and took pride in doing a good necessary job. It is an honest way of making a living and should be acknowledged as such.
Fun side note to this film, while Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were in some films as secondary characters (Dazed and Confused, School Ties etc) Many studios would not read there script to Good Will Hunting. So Kevin Smith who has already made Clerks and sold the script to Chasing Amy to Miramax, helped Ben and Matt get there script over to Miramax as well. That's why Kevin is listed as a producer of Good Will Hunting.
“Gotta go see about a girl” is my memorable quote from this film like “We’re gonna need a bigger boat” is for Jaws. This is definitely one of my fav films of all time. Loved the performances from Damon, Affleck, Driver, Skarsgard, and of course the late great Robin Williams! I remember when I first watched it in the 90s and being a lil frustrated not knowing if Skylar took him back. However, in my mind they got back together.
RIP always to the late great Robin Williams! Definitely looking forward to this one. 😊 One of my all-time favorite Robin Williams, Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck films. This movie 100% deserved all of the awards that it won for that year. If neither of you have already seen it already, I do highly recommend the 2015 movie "The Martian".
This film and The Shawshank Redemption are among a handful of more recent films that are always watchable and can make you stop and allow you to Reset yourself. Great Film(s) and Great Reaction. :)
I remember someone once watched this movie and critisized it for the ending, saying how they built up the whole premise of the movie around Will's genius maths skills and how he needs to grasp that talent and make a living from it - only to end up ditching it to get back with his girlfriend ... I laughed at the time, but in essence, there is some truth to that. Personally, I love the movie for what it is, regardless of how each character ended up. It's more focused on the relationships and dialogue between the people Will interacts with. THAT'S what makes this movie so legendary. The characters of Sean Maguire and Chuckie Sullivan are what keeps bringing me back to this movie time and time again. Both of them never meet or share screentime together at any point, but both are so vital in the life of Will Hunting, they both single handedly structure Will's destiny.
Will had an incredibly tough life, but in this film, literally everyone around him is rooting for and supporting him. In that regard, he's really lucky.
"Son of a b. He stole my line" was a Robin Williams ad lib. The script had him just smiling and going back inside. But when Williams said it, supposedly Damon and the director looked at each other like "That's it. We got it."
The first Psychologist Will visits is played by George Plimpton. Plimpton was a accomplished writer, many of his writings were sports related. He actually practiced and played in some preseason games for a couple of teams in the NFL to get insight.

This movie is filled with amazing performances from its A-league cast, but Casey Affleck is in a league of is own. Morgan isn't a lead character, yet he steals every scene he's in. And he does it so slyly, it took me years and repeated viewings to realize how brilliant he is. Many films lose their luster with repeat viewings. Not this. The more you watch, the more you see. Every character gets their moment to shine and the entire cast is up for the challenge. This film has aged surprisingly well. Glad you finally got to watch this. Thanks for letting us ride along.
I ad the good fortune to be stuck in Atlanta looking for a way to kill an evening and had this movie showing near me. Didn't know anything about it but since Will is another nickname for William I picked this one to go see.
If I'm remembering correctly, Casey ad-libed his dialog. The line, "I swallowed a bug" is something Marlon Brando said during the filming of a scene for Apocalypse Now.
I lived in Massachusetts for half my youth, 1977-85. I loved that accent. It was fun! I was friends with a kid whose dad was a cop. He was one of the cop extras in Jaws, in that boat with the boys pretending to be a shark.

One thing that is very subtle but important, you’ll notice when Sean (Robin Williams) starts to call Will (Matt Damon) son in the last few meetings. This is Sean building a father/son relationship that Will never had, which helps Will with his fear of attachment, that ultimately gets him to “go to see about a girl”
The argument in the restaurant between Sean and the Professor is typical of him trying to force his what he wants onto someone else and Sean's reaction was completely justified because Lambeau is trying to make it about him when he really should be butting out. Sean's already given him the answer he says that he doesn't really feel that Will's ready yet but Lambeau in his arrogance can't really accept that.
