18:25 that iconic line was delivered by none other than Rob Reiner's own mother! He always jokes that he gave the best movie line of the 80's and arguably all of pop culture, to his Mom!
Your observation of Sally and Harry walking away from the camera mirroring the shot from Casablanca (along with appropriate "friendship" dialog was just outstanding!
"I'll have what she's having." Fun Fact: Joe is played by Steven Ford, the son of 38th U.S. President Gerald Ford. Hot Take Fact: The scene where we see all four lead characters talking to each other individually on various telephones took sixty takes to nail. Location Location Fact: The orgasm scene was filmed at Katz's Deli, an actual restaurant on New York's E. Houston Street. The table at which the scene was filmed now has a "Where Harry Met Sally ...Hope You Have What She Had!" plaque. That's Hot Fact: For the infamous fake orgasm scene, the original script called for Harry and Sally to merely talk about women faking an orgasm, until Meg Ryan suggested that Sally actually fake an orgasm at the table. Director Rob Reiner loved the idea and put it into the script. In a November 2, 2004 interview with NPR, writer Nora Ephron credited Meg Ryan not only with the idea of faking an orgasm in the famous restaurant scene, but also with the idea of setting it in a restaurant in the first place.
28:44 the 4 way phone call was done basically "live" they films all three parts at the same time from various stages and they set up the phone so they could ACTUALLY make that call as real as possible!!! it's a REALLY cool scene!!
This movie is very much the story of me and my wife. Met as college students in the late 1970s, lived next door to each other, became friends. Even after we graduated we stayed friends, she hooked me up with her roommate, I hooked her up with mine. We both moved multiple times, stayed in touch. By 1989 I was splitting with my girlfriend, she was splitting from her husband. We went on a trip together, as friends, stayed in separate hotel rooms. By the end of that trip we had grown much closer together. Months later I proposed, by the end of 1990 we were married. We've been married ever since. It really is the best thing when you get to marry your best friend!
7:45 And they *are* real life commentaries. They are indeed actors portraying them but their words are real stories. 15:20 Has anyone mentioned that Billy was improvising the whole 'pecan pie' conversation. Meg genuinely started to laugh and turns to Rob Reiner expecting him to call a cut but he was loving it and gestured to Meg to keep it going. Genius directing, genius acting and a genius film. 28:08 Brilliant scene and was filmed as you see it. Billy & Meg were on two different sound stages with Carrie and Bruno on a third but they all held their conversations "live" to keep the natural rhythm. 32:18 Originally they didn't plan to have a happy ending. Rob Reiner said a lot of himself went into Harry and he'd personally been single for a decade and he was very cynical about love as a result. But during filming he was introduced to a woman called Michelle who he fell head over heels for and as a result he believed in romance again so they changed the ending. Rob married her in 1989, the year the film was released and they've been together ever since.
This is one of those movies that you watch every few years and say, "man I love this". Meg Ryan is absolutely one of kind and I'm excited to revisit the Hanks Ryan/ Trilogy, Sleepless, Got mail, and my personal favorite Joe vs. Volcano. Bruno Kirby is so good, The Freshman with Broderick....great. Carrie obviously is legend, Loverboy was another funny role
So glad you mentioned Soap. That was indeed such a star making role for him. He is such a good character actor that he ended up being a regular on SNL AFTER hosting the show twice.
The actress dating Harry that you mentioned was also in League of their Own is Rob Reiner's daughter. Her mom Penny Marshall directed her in League of their Own.
This not only is my favorite romantic comedy of all time, I can safely say its most likely my favorite movie of all time. Which most people look at me weird for considering my film tastes otherwise lean towards Horror, Sci-Fi, Dark crazy stuff or absolutely ridiculous stupid comedies. But this movie, to me, is absolute PERFECTION.
A classic Rom-Com you have to watch is "The Goodbye Girl"(1977). A huge massive hit in theatre the Christmas of 1977. Richard Dreyfuss won the Oscar for best actor. I think He is the only one to win an Oscar as a lead in a Rom-Com. The title song was also a hit hit and now a Classic.
Thanks to Robert and Vanessa! 💞 How timely since I watched Billy Crystal receive a Kennedy Center Honor last night?! This flick has so much going for it, as you both mentioned... the actors' skilled performances... the writing of Nora Ephron... the directing of Rob Reiner (who is an awesome human being, to boot). Anyone who hasn't seen it should give it a try.
@@Krisgenx Indeed, my eyes welled with tears at that part. Such a great show, THE KENNEDY CENTER HONORS... every year it's such a joy to behold and participate, in my small way.
Fun Fact .. the woman who said "I'll have what she's having" is Rob Reiner's mom!! ... Also ... all of the couples doing the testimonials are real couples sharing their own stories!!
@@kathyastrom1315 imo it's easy to tell they're actors bc the timing is too perfect to be real. Yet most people think it's real. I guess it's bc people don't expect elderly people to be good actors. Or to be actors at all.
Another Reiner movie is The Princess Bride. It's a good yarn very well acted. If you haven't seen it you should. This one is a personal favorite set in the time I was dating. The Princess Bride was a favorite of my wife and all our kids. It's a sort of adult fairytale. Good reaction.
Since you referenced Casablanca a couple of times throughout the movie, I thought you should know that the song "It Had to Be You" was first heard in Casablanca. Just one more reason to move it to the top of your list.
There are a few iconic scenes from this movie but in my opinion the best aspect of this is the interviews sprinkled through the film. You really need to see Casablanca. There are several scenes in this where the characters are discussing it and several others where the scene plays out similarly to a scene in Casablanca. It's a film that has a great place in world history as well discussing significant events in the film within a very short time of them actually happening in the war. Another example is Throw Mama from the Train, which also stars Billy Crystal. It's a good movie on its own, but it specifically references Strangers on a Train, and indirectly nods to other Hitchcock movies. You can enjoy it without ever having seen any Hitchcock pictures, but it's better if you can catch the allusions.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I saw this when it first came out, and it's still one of my all-time favorite movies. I really enjoyed seeing you two watch it for the first time. Keep up the good work, and Happy New Year! 🎉
"YOU HAVEN'T SEEN "CASABLANCA" YET?!?!?!? Ah, yes, WHMS is THE post-Hepburn/Tracy GOLD STANDARD OF ROM-COMS. The WRITER'S CLINIC that is this movie!! (I love how, IIRC, Carl Reiner gave his mom the movie's best line!) Believe it or not, whenever I think of Carrie Fisher I think first of *this* movie!!!! (Trivia: When "Mad About You" started a few years later, one critic called it "When Harry *Married* Sally" :) ) And yes, I loved Crystal on "Soap." THANKS!!!!
I forgot how good this movie was! ❤ If you guys are fans of Nora Ephron, I suggest Heartburn with Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson (sp?). It's based on her relationship with famous journalist Carl Bernstein. It's very funny and heart felt.
One of the biggest déjà vu movies of my life. As explained in the October 1989 issue of Premier magazine, ~16 of its story elements had already occurred in Woody Allen’s ANNIE HALL and MANHATTAN. Barry Sonnenfeld also makes a cameo in BARTON FINK.
Possibly my favorite movie ever. Perfect comedic timing, epic story, Nora and Meg, Billy. Just can not be better Everyone knows “that scene” but it’s not even close to the best part of the movie in my opinion. Great review!
This was my favorite movie throughout my twenties - I watched it SO many times! I still quote it often (I'm pretty sure I've memorized every line!). Sadly, life experiences have made me jaded and now romantic comedies make me cringe lol. This one still makes me chuckle though - Billy Crystal has the best comedic timing!
I love yalls commentary! Excited to see more of this channel’s reactions. This movie is my favorite romantic comedy of all time. Barefoot in the Park would be my #2. SUBBED‼️❤
I'm sure someone mentioned it, but the famous "I'll have what she's having" line was delivered by Estelle Reiner (Carl's wife and Rob Reiner's mother). It's ranked 33rd on the American Film Institute's Best Movie Lines of All Time list. You guys should react to The Dick Van Dyke Show (Carl Reiner's masterpiece). Best sitcom of all time and the inspiration for all the other sitcoms that became classics. It was also Wanda Maximoff's favorite sitcom of all time.
IIRC, Billy’s character in Soap was the first out gay character in a network tv series. I remember when the show started that my Catholic priest actually told us in his homily not to watch the show for that very reason. I was just a preteen at the time and had no idea why he was so against the show.
Fun fact: the old people's stories are all true, delivered by actors. Ff 2: When "Harry talks in the funny accent, Billy Crystal made this on the spot, it was not scripted. Ff 3: The fake orgasm was also not scripted, and in the diner, there is a plaque where they sat. Also, Rob Reiner laughed so much he couldn't stay in the room during shooting that scene. Ff 4: The four phone conversation was shot in real time, so the couple was at one bed, and Billy and Meg were at distant corners of the room, the synch took a lot of takes.
The actress from the movie A League Of Their Own is Tracy Reiner. Her mother, the great Penny Marshall, was married to Rob Reiner for 10 years. He adopted her daughter Tracy.
Apparently the pecan pie scene just started with Billy Crystal doing the funny voice, if you look closely Meg Ryan looks to the side, she was looking at the director, who told her to keep.going.
You need to look up the deleted scenes from when they were first in the coffee shop on their trip to New York. The conversation on body count was hilarious.
35:28 my wife and I met on the job 30+ years ago. Initially we liked each other but then had some miscommunication so we didn’t talk for a year or so. Then one day I asked her out to lunch. We started hanging out as friends (I had a girlfriend) and would go places. Eventually I began to see that I liked her more than my girlfriend. So I broke up with my girlfriend and started dating my friend. I discovered later she had thought we were already dating. LOL. Once again due miscommunication we broke up and didn’t see one another for a year. After a couple of crappy relationships, I called her up to say I’m sorry. We started hanging out again and a year later we got married. Almost 29 years later we are still together. Sometimes love takes the long road.
Funny you should mention _A League of Their Own,_ directed by Rob Reiner's ex-wife, Penny Marshall. They once co-starred in a TV movie about two friends who fell in love, by the way.
When Harry Met Sally is my all-time favorite Rom Com. If you get a chance, check out the film Mr. Saturday Night. Billy Crystal is great in it and directed it as well.
There's a great story told by the screenwriter, Nora Ephron. She was on a plane when they were playing this film on the screens. This was back before personal in flight entertainment was a thing, and the diner scene cut to the next scene before Sally fakes having an orgasm. And the entire cabin was enraged, with passengers groaning in disappointment and some even booing.
We were actually going to watch Hudsucker Proxy for New Years because Vanessa hasn't seen it, but at the last minute we decided on When Harry Met Sally since it was a movie both of us had not seen yet.
@@LatetotheParty OMG yay! I don't think I've seen anyone react to Hudsucker yet! This was a treat to watch you with. I always forget Harry Met Sally ends on New Year's Eve 😂 at first I was like "hm, odd choice for NYE, but I love it so let's go!" Meg Ryan's first time in a movie with Tom Hanks, before Sleepless, is Joe VS the Volcano, have you seen that one yet? It is cinematic perfection.🥰🙏
Hey, how many versions of this movie are there? That quick scene of them through the window of a Chinese restaurant wasn't in the movie that I've seen a hundred times. And when Sally says, "I'm going to be 40!" Harry says, "When?" and she says, "Some day!" In THIS movie, he says "In 8 years." and she says, "But it's there!" I don't get it. Why would they change these tiny things?
The reason that it sounds like Seinfeld is because it was taken from this movie. Seinfeld, if anything (and mad about you, Friends) is essentially just "New York slice of life humor"
Doesn't anyone recognize Clemenza from Godfather ll? He has a distinctive voice, imo. He did an awesome job as young Clemenza in Godfather ll and here as .... Jess, Harry's best friend. I can't believe so many don't recognize him. And since they're a reaction channel, they had to have seen Godfather l & ll. I would think. Bruno Kirby is an awesome actor. I've never seen City Slickers, but heard he was great in that as well.
For me personally I agree that you can't be just friends if I find her attractive, our friendship will suffer because the whole time I'm thinking I wanna take you out and make you my gf lol 🤷😂 and sour cream? Wtf Vanessa 😂 maybe you meant whipped cream 🤔😂
I 100% endorse the theory that a single man and woman cannot just be friends if at least one of them is attracted to the other. The friendship is doomed.
Happy New Year to you all! See you in 2024!

It’s Rob Reiner’s mom actually 👍🏻
I've got sour cream!!! 🙋🙋🙋
V: "Forty's not *bad*!"
R, without hesitation: "Yesitis."
As a 47 y.o., I loled...then wept. Robert is good, Robert is wiiiiise...
What are you doin out here? What Casa Blanca!
Another fun film for Billy Crystal is RUNNING SCARED
He Said, She said is also a good one you should watch
I nice hidden gem is The Story Of Us (1999). Just so you know the category, it's a drama.
The reason that it sounds like Seinfeld is because it was taken from this movie. Seinfeld, if anything (and mad about you, Friends) is essentially just "New York slice of life humor"
Since you guys are doing older movies.. you should watch the 13th Floor. There's a very Tucson reason for it.
That's definitely on the list. Vanessa hasn't seen it and she needs to!
Well, we are a reaction channel, but we haven’t gotten to the Godfather films yet. They are on the list.
christmas this year in Durban, south coast...32C...projected temp for new years...32C ? (90F)
another billy crystal movie you should watch then is Forget Paris
For me personally I agree that you can't be just friends if I find her attractive, our friendship will suffer because the whole time I'm thinking I wanna take you out and make you my gf lol 🤷😂 and sour cream? Wtf Vanessa 😂 maybe you meant whipped cream 🤔😂

See THROW MOMMA FROM THE TRAIN and RUNNING SCARED
"We're sorry, but your fingers are too fat for this keypad..."
I 100% endorse the theory that a single man and woman cannot just be friends if at least one of them is attracted to the other. The friendship is doomed.
