I'm actually old enough to have been able to see When Harry Met Sally in a movie theater. You two probably hadn't even been born yet, but I really loved your reactions. Nora Ephron's script has held up so well over these 30+ years. Although she has passed away, her voice will live on in her work and this classic movie. The clothes are also very classic, and I could picture myself wearing some of those outfits today, which is quite rare for some of these older movies. RIP Nora...you are sorely missed.

    Love this movie!
In case no one has told you yet: The love stories told by the married couples during the "intermissions" were all genuine. The couples were played by actors, but they related the life stories of actual couples. Just another of the lovely touches to this iconic rom-com film.

In case anyone didn't mention it, I will explain the wagon-wheel table situation. I am 4 months shy of being 50, and have loved this movie since I saw it when it came out. So, I can speak to trends that you aren't old enough to have seen.
That wagon wheel coffee table was not considered elegant or classy, and therefore not in good taste. Whereas now, to many it would be considered rustic, shabby chic. So, don't feel bad Mr. Boose, just like clothing, things will be in style, go out of style, and if you're lucky to get older, you will see them come back in style again.
That wagon wheel coffee table likely was popular in the 70's or even early 80's as there was a time where cowboys were chic. So, it makes sense that it would be passe' by 1989. I too would scoop up that table now. It's unique and has character. I have always been a fan though of what they now refer to as "shabby chic". And here I never thought that my grandparents poverty would become trendy one day.😉🤣
Btw, I am really getting a kick out of watching people enjoy my favorite movie. I love it b/c my husband and I have a "When Harry Met Sally..." story ourselves, as we met in the bookstore we worked at and were friends first for a long time. We will be married 20 years this June.

THE GOLD STANDARD of Rom-Coms. One of my all-time favorite feature films! A feature screenplay writing clinic! THANKS for this!!! I love the leads, but my favorite scene is between Bruno Kirby and Carrie Fisher (the end of the diagonal blind date, when they look at each other outside of the restaurant and then run to the cab! LMAO!!!) You CinePals folks are young (I saw this in the theater on a date) so you should know that this movie caused a *lot* of public conversation about/between hetero/cis men and women. I think the 21st century is different for reasons you two know better than me--perhaps because Z and Alpha are so psychologically oriented. *ACHARA, YOU HAVEN'T SEEN "CASABLANCA???"* I'm with dude; that's gotta be the next one!!!

I think there are basically two blueprints for the modern romcom: This one and Annie Hall. People probably argue about which is the OG and/or the better representative of the genre. I’d say Harry & Sally is the more romantic one, but few movies are funnier than Annie Hall.

    • @luminiferous1960
      @luminiferous1960 Год назад +1

You have to go much further back in history than either Annie Hall or When Harry Met Sally to find the origins of the romantic comedy and the blueprints for romantic comedies.
According to The Evolution of the Romantic Comedy by Amanda Urena, "The romantic comedy traces its origins to the Shakespearean tradition of the same name. The traditional rom-com structure originated in his work 'The Merchant of Venice.'...Shakespeare’s plays have been ingrained in the fabric of the romantic comedy...The Shakespearean romantic comedy structure reappeared in 20th-century silent films. The 1924 films “Sherlock Jr.” and “Girl Shy” set the precedent for how the romantic comedy would be translated to the silver screen. They were infused with the warmth, wit and sweetness that would shape the genre into the beloved mainstay it grew to be. This growth, however, did not come without the adolescent meandering that appears in any good coming of age story - the kind of variance that served to adapt the genre to its given period.
The first period to see this meandering was the 1930s and 40s, which witnessed the advent of the screwball comedy. This genre came into being simultaneously as sound was added to film. Finally, writers could fill their movies with verbal wit to match the visual storytelling achieved by directors."
Note that some other sources consider Shakespeare's Two Gentleman of Verona to be the first romantic comedy. The article Shakespeare's First Romantic Comedy By Jerry L. Crawford states "Two Gentlemen is Shakespeare’s first romantic comedy. While it cannot stand with its successors, it will lead to the likes of Twelfth Night. The central concern of the romantic comedies is the stuff of romance-love, youth, and beauty. The plot is always the same boy meets girl-and the complications arise out of the dramatic fact that “the course of true love never did run smooth.” The world of romantic comedy is one in which the improbable looks probable; in which dark moments always pass; in which danger, grief and evil are known to be transitory; and in which there is the constant reassurance that all will be well in the end."
Two Gentleman of Verona was written between 1589 and 1591, before The Merchant of Venice, which was written between 1596 and 1597, and thus, Two Gentleman of Verona does take chronological precedence.
However, neither of these plays is considered to be the most influential one on the modern rom-com. According to the article "William Shakespeare invented every romantic comedy trope we love today" by Caroline Siede, "Shakespeare’s single most influential romantic comedy is Much Ado About Nothing, the iconic story of two wise and witty former lovers who claim they can’t stand one another, even though all they do is obsess about each other. Too proud to admit that the “merry war” betwixt them is covering up some very real feelings, Beatrice and Benedick need an outside push to get them to lower their pride and realize they’re perfect for one another...
The reason we keep revisiting the play is the same reason we keep adapting its tropes for modern rom-coms. With Much Ado, Shakespeare tapped into something universal about love and human nature, highlighting our foibles with a perceptive yet sympathetic eye."

    • @hackapump

      @@luminiferous1960
      Short version:
You’re right. Which is why I specifically said ”the modern romcom” and not romantic comedy in general.
      Slightly longer version:
Of course romantic comedies existed before Annie Hall. That’s not the point I was making though, I wasn’t suggesting those two movies established the genre. I was suggesting they are the main blueprints for the current version of it. But that too will change in due time, as the human civilisation continues slowly evolving. Because yes, regardless what a disproportionally vocal minority thinks about it, relations between men and women have evolved since the dawn of film and literature, which is why the influence of those old movies on contemporary romcoms is limited. It’s true all storytelling owes a debt to the old masters. That doesn’t mean no one ever innovates within the framework, or comes up with a fresh new take that influences everyone going forward. You can argue that content is of no importance, only inert ancient narrative structures matter when discussing genres. And I would agree to disagree. But please don’t distort the point I was making.

City Slickers is another great Billy Crystal movie. Bruno Kirby (who played Jess in this movie) is also in City Slickers as well. it's a friendship movie. Funny and heartwarming too.

City Slickers is actually my favorite Billy Crystal movie 🙂This is probably my second favorite of his. But I also really loved Jack Palance in that movie, I grew up watching westerns with my grandfather so it was great to see him in the movie.

Another Billy Crystal romcom movie that I like is America's Sweethearts. I highly recommend it, no one ever reacts to it and I feel not many know of it. It also has John Cusack, Julia Roberts, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Stanley Tucci, Christopher Walken and so many more stars in it.

I know you won't even bother, but if you like Billy Crystal in a Rom Com, he did a similar one in 1995 called Forget Paris with Debra Winger. Follows alot of the structure here, a couple falls in love but struggles to make it work due to work. She works for an airline and he's an NBA referee. It's really funny and has alot of the NBA player of the time in it. And that one was actually directed by Billy Crystal too.

Watered down version of "Annie Hall" and Woody Allen movies in general (which are almost all rom-coms). Watch the real article. Not that Rob Reiner is bad but "Annie Hall" is the direct influence on "When Harry Met Sally", and is 50 times the film, on multiple levels: script, cinematography, acting, originality, depth, cultural importance and influence. Even the fashion of "Annie Hall" was influential.

This is a favorite movie. Thanks for reacting to it. I knew a lot of Harry and Sallys through the 70s and 80s. Some of us made it, some not, but the stories were interesting. A different film that I am sure none of you have seen is the quirky Steve Martin and Goldy Hawn version of "House Sitter" from 1992(?). It is lots of fun, very well written and acted. The cast is impressive. Thanks again for Harry Met Sally.

@paulnolasco2831 One of my favorite scenes is when Harry and Sally are walking through the park. Those autumn leaves were so gorgeous! Hello Folks
This movie actually has 4 iconic scenes / quotable parts. 1 is obviously the "Men and women can't be friends" at the beginning. 2 the "Big O" scene. 3 quickly after the old lady saying, "I'll have what she is having". (Btw, that is the mother of Rob Reiner). And 4 is the "Talk like this... Pecan pie" scene at the museum. The end scene dialogue gets an honorable mention.
According to the folklore of the film, Riener interviewed real elderly couples about have they met and stayed together. He use 'extra actors' (AFTRA) to recreate the vignettes (short clips) that are used throughout the film. Supposedly, 1 of these couples was a real couple.
The film hits on many of the troupes / stereotypical the beliefs that men and women have being having with each other about relationships and even 34 yrs. later continue to persist. You understood the overall arc and message of the relationship story. While your partner does NOT need to be your 'best friend', the person SHOULD be a dear and close friend. Not necessarily someone you can live with for many years in to the future, but more, a person you can't imagine / choose to live without no matter how imperfect / not ideal and full of quirky flaws they may have.
Paraphrasing Harry, "when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with (that true) someone, you want that part of your life to start as soon as possible".
This is one of my favorites to watch over the holiday season. I watch this and: "Sleepless in Seattle", "While You Were Sleeping", "White Christmas", "This Christmas", and "Love Actually". But other great iconic rom-coms to wat are: "About Last Night", "Say Anything", "Big", Splash", "Hanna and Her Sister', Mystic Pizza", "Dirty Dancing", "Some Kind of Wonderful", "Secret Admirer, "Peggy Sue Got Married", "Overboard', Working Girl", "Sabrina" (both Versions), "Moonstruck", "Four Wedding and a Funeral", "My Best Friend's Wedding", "The Wedding Singer", "The Wood", "Pretty Woman', "Loverboy", and "Can't Buy Me Love".
