I have to believe that the bench scene is what sealed the Oscar for him. Everyone knows him as frenetic and chaotic as a comedian, but when he goes to work as a dramatic actor, he's a spectacle to behold. Other movies (Fisher King, Awakenings, Patch Adams, Dead Poets Society) feel like that too.

I had this reaction ready to post a handful of days ago, then suddenly it got marked with copyright issues. After numerous editing/re-uploading attempts, I'm unfortunately left with this pretty short version. All that aside, I can't put into words the way this movie moved me. From the very beginning I was completely captivated by it. I didn't comment nearly as much as usual, but I think my facial reactions speak for themselves 🍎

It's weird because some have much longer edits (some over an hour) with no copyright issues. It looks like they have a better way of slicing and dicing and adding effects (filters in spots, blurred screen w/ audio, etc). Plus, I don't think there's a blueprint for Reaction videos like everyone seems to think there is. Some talk very little and some walk all over the dialogue because that's all they know for dodging copyrights. There's always ways around it if you have the right edit.

I'm 31, and relate to the role of Will a lot in this movie, and it makes me cry everytime I watch it. I think it's profoundness is in how it shows the innocence and well intentioned soul of every person, and how unnecessary and undeserved trauma and abuse can twist and distort individuals into ppl we perceive as wholy evil and unworthy of love/affection. However, this story portrays the beauty of an individual able to overcome those traumas and grow into a nurturing and positive personality.

I think Robin Williams, Ben Affleck & Matt Damon definitely deserved their Oscar wins for this film. Good Will Hunting has been in my top 5 favorite movies since I was young, I’m so glad you loved it & found it moving! Great reaction!
I’m definitely a fan of Matt Damon. The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) is an amazing thriller/drama set in the 1950s that I’d recommend from his early career. It is rated R with a star-studded cast: Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett, Philip Seymour Hoffman, etc. It’s a bit creepy 😅 if that’s not your vibe, I’d recommend a movie from more recently in his career The Martian (2015) that has 7 Oscar noms

When Robin Williams first read the script for this movie. He asked the director Gus Van Sant "Who wrote this?". Gus Van Sant said "These two kids Matt Damon and Ben Affleck". Robin Williams again asked "No seriously who wrote this?". Gus Van Sant replied "Seriously they wrote this". That surprised Robin Williams. Cause there's a depth of writing in this script that few young writers have.

Hey Steph, think the parts with Robin Williams and Will Hunting got you the most because everytime Sean spoke he referred to the deep love he had for his wife. ------- I know it makes you think of every person you loved and lost. ------- What they meant to you and how you want to hug them even tighter after this movie. -------- GWH, is amazing at making you feel the fear that each character has and their inability to deal with it, which is a knife that cuts very deep for so many of us. ------ Will has fear of abandonment. Sean has fear in making a deep connection again, Chuck fears he will only be as good as his construction jobs. -------- Professor Lambeau fears has an Einstien level genius in his grasp and he can't get his to fulfill that talent (he can't get his out of the patent office). ------ The writing is so smart as to allow the revealtion of these fears through conversation and character interaction. ------- I hope my breakdown of the themes in GWH spark more dialogue. ------ I have had over 30 years and 100 viewings of this movie to decipher and understand the depths of the writing in this movie.

I’m a fully grown man, retired military with 20 years of service, and this movie makes me cry. Every. Single. Time. My dad was a drunk and drug addict, and I was the one who had to call 911 the night he tried to kill my mom. A year later, he had remarried another addict, and when he slapped her, her son, a senior in high school, and a very gifted athlete… very strong, went in to defend her. And my dad put his face through a glass coffee table. I joined the service out of high school to get away from home and be my own man, and four months into my time in the service my dad was sent to prison for the first time.
I met my wife two years into my career. She was the first woman I ever dated who wasn’t totally psycho, and she was the first person besides my mom who loved me for me and not for what I could do for them. Most of all, she was the first woman who ever gave me hope for a peaceful life. My life literally began to change the day we met, and we celebrate our 29th anniversary in a couple months. My wife literally made me want to be a better man. And because of that, this movie makes me process all the crap I dealt with growing up, and it kills me every time I watch it. But I still do because it’s a great movie, and because it reminds me to be grateful for the grace she showed me to help me get through what I could never get over. And that’s why my biggest goal in life was not to have a great career (even though I did), but to be a good husband and a good father. I was not and am not perfect, and my failures have definitely left me with some regrets, but I did my best and I am thankful every day for the motivation her love gives me to never give up. I retired from the service because of disability. I have had 33 hospitalizations since 2012, please about three times as many ER visits (catch and releases is a fishing term, I now use when they decide to not keep me, lol). But she still motivates me to keep going and give each day my best. I’d have never gotten to this point if it wasn’t for her love.

You know Steph, not everything in life requires explanation. Sometimes it’s simply enough to allow others to “feel” YOU. So many understand without words. Now, as for this movie…. I have seen it numerous times, and I watch almost every reaction to it, on here. This movie demands immediately that the audience cheer for Will. He’s an emotionally torn young man, turned Antagonist, who suddenly is seen as someone who is gifted, but unmotivated. Because of this, the audience begins to value Will and cheer for him. They loved his sneaking around solving the mathematical equations that had taken some ppl two years to solve. During this time, we enjoy Will getting the best of the Psychologists. We enjoy Will going to bat for his friend, against the grad. student from Harvard, and winning. We also like him and Skyler together, so suddenly Will shifts to the Protagonist. This feel good movie is such, because it renews hope. It gives the viewer hope. Will goes on to “get better”, all the while also helping Robin Williams character to reassess his own life situation, and try again. All in all, every one wins … except we are left hanging on whether Will ever found Skyler again and they got back together and had a wonderful life. But I believe that was intentional, because it allows every invested viewer to dream their own appealing ending. The biggest moment in the movie was Robin Willams incredible monologue, by the duck pond. It made Will think, as well as every viewer, causing all to take inventory of each persons life.
I enjoyed your reaction … loved your heart. 👏🏻

Loved this reaction, the movie is so powerful that it is pretty much impossible to not ugly cry through it! The lasting impact is just knowing the level of trauma they tackle actually has a lasting impact. We feel happy about his ability to move forward with his life and open up to new things, but that trauma will always be there for him, and I think the movie does an amazing job of tackling that idea. Sean never makes it seem like he will be cured, but always puts forward that things can be managed to feel better.
I always found the bitter sweet sadness in this film at the end, because that trauma they introduce, you know hasn't disappeared, but countered by Will's new ability to remove that trauma from impacting his ability to move forward and trust new people.

As someone who actually had a really unusual education history and rough go of adjusting socially myself, I find myself relating to it more and more each year. As I continue to grow, and learn/admit more about my own weakness and defense mechanisms, I realize this movie is even closer to home than I realized when I first saw it. Just a wonderful, cathartic experience.

This is such a great film. I use this film as a barometer of people that watch film. I've literally seen this film over a dozen time and I've never failed to shed tears. Robin Williams and Matt Damon are so amazing... but so is the rest of the cast. It doesn't take a false step the whole way through. Your reaction was pitch perfect. . So... I'm subscribing!
Since you loved this one... I've got some absolutely brilliant films to recommend. They all feature fantastic story / acting / direction / cinematography / special effects.
Most are totally under the radar gems:
ARRIVAL: Probably the greatest alien-invasion story of all... Realistic.. surprising ... beautifully told.
CHILDREN OF MEN: The great director, Alfonso Cuaron knocks it out of the park with this near-future dystopian tale. This one gets pretty dark... but is so incredible.
GRAVITY: Another Cuaron film... this one starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in this epic space adventure.
PLEASANTVILLE: (Toby Maguire and Reece Witherspoon.. Joan Allen and William H. Macy) Starts off a comedy, but quickly veers into a brilliant look at society. Really hilarious, inventive and beautiful.
STRANGER THAN FICTION: Will Ferrell in a non-comedic role... He's funny in some parts, but this is the most underrated, wonderful little films I've ever seen. A host of excellent actors and a great story moves this along beautifully. Absolute magic.
AMELIE: Speaking of magic... This French film features some of the greatest magical filmmaking imaginable. A beautiful, creative love story told with amazing music and cinematography. Every scene is delightful.
You'll love these films, Steph... ...and once you've seen them, like Good Will Hunting, you'll never forget them. Cheers!

I love the movie, and loved your reaction. A tearjerker every time, but not in a sappy, melodramatic way. It's a rare Hollywood film that really tries to tackle some of these issues. In addition to all the relationships (Will-Sean, Will-Skyler, Will-Chuckie) the Sean-Gerald relationship is also really interesting. Really, nobody in the film is a bad person, though Gerald is a bit sleazy with his female students. But his goal with Will is really good, even if he can't see beyond his own way of doing things.
Again, thanks for the honesty of your reaction, and for posting the film reaction for us all to enjoy.

Yes they wrote it with intentions of them playing the parts they did end up playing. The script was circling around Hollywood and everyone loved it, but everyone wanted big stars to play the roles of Will and Chuckie. They actually turned down a lot of money to sell the script with the intention of Leonardo Dicaprio playing Will and Toby Maguire playing Chuckie. They had x amount of time to try and sell it elsewhere or they were going to lose it. Kevin Smith read the script, gave it to Miramax who loved it and wanted to make it with Kevin Smith vouching for Matt and Ben. That's why Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier are credited as Exec Producers.

He is not a fool. The demons that he carries with him run deep with roots permeating into every relationship he has. His attachment disorder will forever make it difficult for him to interpret love and caring properly, because he doesn't know what a healthy relationship is supposed to be like. Everyone needs to step back, and give him time and patience. Skylar was moving much too quickly. It's unfortunate that Sean recognized the dangers of taking on a job with the Professor, but not the problems that would arise from dating someone.

  • @simoncowell6571
    @simoncowell6571 Год назад

I just posted this elsewhere, but when others note Sean's monologue in the Public Garden, I like to point out the motif of classism displayed throughout. Boston, both then and today, has a deep-rooted, real and gritty, socioeconomic "chip on its shoulder" attitude and a feeling of punching up despite being a prestigious and/or culturally-important city even with its proximity to NYC.
You see buildings, outfits, room decor, and memorabilia evident of the historically working class Irish-Catholic neighborhood of South Boston ("Southie") as well as that of the upper echelon in Harvard and MIT (both in neighboring Cambridge), and reference to Stanford. You hear the progressive disdain in Sean's voice starting with a bitter and dismissive "I got your card, it was nice..." to "it was a conscious choice, I didn't f--k up" and finally the climax of "...he's not you, you get that!?" to Professor Lambeau who are split-screened by Will looking into the camera reflecting the presumed paths and his need to make a choice for his life.
I find no antagonists in this movie and empathize with Gerald Lambeau. Lambeau is a smart man who proves he wants to help Will by getting him out of jail, mentoring him, trying to find him good therapists, and providing Will with job opportunities. He has the humility to admit Sean is and was smarter than him and the gall to face Sean later and apologize. Despite tone deaf, arrogant, belittling statements, I think that is his deep-rooted determination and need to live up to the pressures of his job and prestige of his Fields Medal and is not an exploitation of self-interest in Will's knowledge. Lambeau is subconsciously acting in contrast to Sean and Will in this way.
