The first time I watched this was when I was in my mid teens, and I found it kinda boring, but there was something about it that I liked that I just couldn't explain. When I watched it again in my mid 20s, the movie seems to have changed. A lot happened in the decade that passed. I experienced true loss several times and had a whole new perspective in life. It's a beautiful movie

Fun Fact: The bench that they sat on in the park is now a little memorial in Boston for Robin Williams....
Also when Robin is telling his funny stories and cracking jokes and Matt Damon is laughing you can see just a hint of a camera shake as well. That is the cameraman unable to hold back his laughter as well. Robin was such a funny, great guy.... He is sorely missed.

There are two kinds of people. Ones who watch the 'Come to California' scene and are confused by Will's actions and those that know exactly what he's doing and why. I'm the latter and it's a bittersweet thing to watch people react to it in the former manner. Because on the one hand it's a little frustrating to see them not 'get it' but on the other hand they don't get it because they're psychologically healthy people without attachment and abandonment issues. In the end I guess I'm glad so few people really 'get it' because it's a painful and lonely way to live.

Family Guy had this running bit that Matt Damon actually wrote the entire screenplay and only gave credit to an inferior intellect such as Ben Afflex due to loyalty bred of a long friendship. I don't know why this got started, but I was often ashamed to find myself laughing in spite of the mean spirit of this. Funny random observation from a random stranger online who is seeing this random comment a year later:
The first time I watched Community, I absolutely LOVED it. While there are still many things about it I love, I went back and watched it years later, and realized there were quite a few 'lessons' within the episodes that were basically just flying monkey bullshit that people use in real life to excuse/enable narcissistic behavior.
This made more sense when I saw more behind the scenes stuff about Dan Harmon, and how he has major narcissistic tendencies.
A stand-out example is the episode where they make fun Good Will Hunting, and basically say it's a bad movie about a bad friend, because a good friend would never encourage someone close to them to leave (which is very much a narcissistic control technique, where you hold someone back to keep them in your orbit).
Ironically, they later contradicted this entirely in the episode where Glover left the show, and the 'lesson' was that the right thing to do is support your friend, even if they're leaving, which was precisely the 'bad' thing they shit on Good Will Hunting for doing.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I've never quite been in the trouble Will gets in, but I've had a lot of issues from my past that often haunted me (and still do). This was one of the first movies I ever watched where I got to the end, to Sean telling Will it's not his fault, and I just hysterically sobbed. Because I, like so many of us, just carry SO MUCH and put SO MUCH blame on ourselves for what others have done to us. And I really put myself in Will's shoes and I heard Sean telling me it wasn't MY fault. The things that had been done to me, the abuses, all of it.
The movie has so many great moments. Wonderful comedy. Romance. Drama. It has literally everything. But most of all it has PATIENCE. Sean is patient enough to not try to force his way through Will's defenses because he knows and sees how defensive he is and that he has to show him that he can trust him before he can get in. And I think that's something that a great many of us need in our lives... patience.
Thank you for what you do.

Two fun facts: The Dog Fart story was entirely improvised by Robin. In that scene, if you look carefully, you can see the edges of the screen shaking and wobbling, on both cuts; this is because while shooting that scene Robin had the entire set laughing their asses off over the Dog Farting, the shaking is the cameramen involulenarily shaking the camera.
Also, Will's friends Chucky Sullivan and George O'Malley who were always agitating each other, George was the one who wanted the Double Burger and finally elevated to shotgun in the end, they have such a familial attitude because they are in life really brothers.

The scene in the park on the bench is my favorite. It really humbled Will and made him realize that he really had no life experience despite being a genius. It also really served to give Williams’ character a backstory in a creative way. He has experienced everything he asked Will about and in just a few minutes it give his character a good deal of depth. Robin Williams really had a wide range when it came to acting. Starting out as a comedian, to acting in frames like this to even playing the villain in some movies. I’m recommend his movie “One Hour Photo”.

I love this film. I worked at Miramax Films when it came out and worked on the marketing campaign/advertising art/poster. So many great performances in this film. Robin and Matt were great, but t eh whole cast and the writing and direction were well-suited to this material. It was one of the best films I had seen from Miramax, and I was proud to be a part of that. Another one was Slingblade with Billy Bob Thornton... another classic gem. Worked on that campaign, as well. I loved your reaction, and I'm glad it's still touching people's lives years later.

You don't need to talk a lot. The tears spoke volumes. I have always felt connected to this movie. It came out when I was 14, and I always felt connected, as a young man who grew up in very rough circumstances, but was high intellectual. I spent my youth with rough dudes that never understood, and would even give me shit for carrying around books constantly. So yea, I did connect to this movie quite a bit from a young age. Nice to see your reactions to it...

Burt Reynolds was crushed that he didn't get the Oscar that year, but he supposedly hated his role in Boogie Nights and thought the film was bad. On the other hand, Robin Williams helped get Good Will Hunting made and clearly loved the character he was playing. Reynolds played an aloof, cynical version of himself. Williams played a man with many shades and revealed them all subtly and realistically. The award belonged to Williams.

Personally, I love the way you do your movie reactions. There are way too many reactors out there that think they're supposed to be talking non-stop. I've seen some of them even just make noise when they can't think of anything. It's totally ridiculous! With you however, you're calm but also inviting, because the things you say have purpose and your smile conveys an openess. Or, like in this video, you may share something of yourself and that makes people feel like they're watching the movie with a friend. Basically, I think you do it exactly right. Best wishes to you.

This is one of the best written films of all time, and the performances of Damon, and Williams take it to a level that only a tiny handful of films can compete with. Robin Williams was generally a truly brilliant man, beyond just comedy or acting. That brilliance comes through in the depth of the characters he portrayed.

Every GWH react is simple...wait for the famous Robin Williams monologue and see what happens... this one... this reaction was extraordinary, not only to the monologue, but the "it's not your fault" and "tell him, I had to see about a girl." Yes, you may have needed this, but perhaps the world needed you to see this too We're better for it. Lastly, I want to second @SJHD 's comment... your father should be proud.

I think that anyone that gives this movie a try will feel an emotional response. I often tear up when I see it, even when I'm just watching a reaction. I think there's a real human quality about it that takes us by surprise. It takes us to a place, emotionally, that we didn't know was there. It can be uncomfortable for some people as they are used to their masks bandaging over any heartaches. I'm a 63 year old man and I just retired. I have regrets but feeling something deeply is not one of them. Don't be afraid of the emotional depths inside you waiting for attention.
