This time we'll learn everything you need when eating out at a restaurant.
We'll learn what to say to order food, pay the bill, ask for the smoking / non-smoking area, ask for a vegetarian menu (and more!!) while learning the grammar.
Waiters use "business" speech (keigo - the polite language) so we'll also take a look at the grammar.

Misa's English is typically very normal foreigner English with nothing else other than the mother tongue accent. Then once in a while she surprises you with a really really British one like "press the bu'un" and it really hits the point home...

This is INCREDIBLY helpful. Honestly, I've been studying Japanese on my own for the last 5 years, and this is the most thorough explanation of the cultural context and grammatical structure for polite speech that I've encountered. Thank you for taking the time to put this together and subtitle it. I'm hoping to spend three months in Japan this fall, and this has removed a lot of my nervousness about polite ordering and what questions to expect from restaurant staff.

This is incredibly handy. Often books or guides will teach you how to order things, but then the staff will reply something in Japanese and you have no idea what they said and then it gets awkward and confusing and you have to go back to English.
Super helpful that you went through what they are likely to say. Thanks Misa!

I absolutely love how in-depth you go! It makes so much more sense when you break it down and explain the exact meanings, and implications, and feelings that go along with these words rather than just giving a list of phrases. There is a lot to study and learn here -- it isn't the quick and easy way -- but understanding those things even helps understand the nature of Japanese culture that you'd never get by just looking at a list of direct translations. The amount of info you convey in the subtitles is amazing, too. Coloring the corresponding words / parts of speech is very helpful for an English speaker like me in order to make sense of word order. Thank you so much!

Now, whenever any of my teachers ask me to say something in japanese (in front of the class) I'll say, 「禁煙席と喫煙席とどちらがよろしいでしょうか」and tell them that I asked them if they prefered an non-smoking, or smoking area XD I've also been wanting to learn this, so I can try to practice my Japanese at my favorite Japanese resutoran/Izakaya! I actually want to apply to work at this one Izakaya. Just wondering, do you work at an Izakaya in Japan or not in Japan? Because I'm in America, so technically I wouldn't need this "business speech" while working there, unless there was someone who only spoke Japanese, but I still wanna know it for that rare occasion. It's also just fun to know, like know I wanna go up to my friends who speak or don't speak japanese and ask them if they would rather be in the non-smoking or smoking area XD
