Anyway, thanks for watching AVGN for 15 years! It's been a long time since I've done a behind the scenes sort of video. But, I wanted to share some of my new technical updates, the basic set up of a Nerd episode, other projects, and even address some of your complaints.
See the detailed process of Making an AVGN episode, in this older (out of date) behind-the-scenes video, that also counts as episode 102, with the featured game being Barbie (NES)

That ceiling air flow unit is why you're getting a buzzing feedback on the microphone. There's no shielding on the motor. That combined with a drop ceiling is what is causing harmonics.

Same here, like some type of annual update.
I keep running into you on youtube lol
I like how he was still rollin with the 2014 mac for so long lol
I loved this episode. It's really cool to see all the behind the scenes stuff and it is so informative on what really goes on in the day to day of making all of this happen. Like Scrub Lord said, it feels like an annual update. I think it would be cool to see one of these every year. It's really great to see that James is really enjoying doing this. As he (and many others) have mentioned, there was a feeling of burnout in some episodes.
I don't mind the simple vids myself. From the beginning, that was what made it fun for me. It brought me back to those days of sitting in front of the TV, grinding through a game, swearing at it and throwing controllers because, "it's not fair!" So for the high production vids, I'll just take them as bonuses. Here's to keeping on.
Agreed. I was surprised that the Vegas episode was shot one person at a time. It really seemed like James and Tony were together.

So powerful, that quote is gonna stay with me I'm telling you.
If every AVGN episode was an “epic” episode, they wouldn’t be special anymore. As someone who’s been watching AVGN since 2007, the TMNT and Silver Surfer episodes are still some of my favorites. Glad you’re still doing what you do, James.
As if basic episodes weren't awesome anyway, the Nerd is what makes the episodes what they are, not the poshy editing or cool angles for the shots
Well it is nice having a "epic" episode every once in awhile to change things up so things don't get stale
The basic episodes don't get enough love. AVGN the show started out as basic episodes and some of the best episodes of all times are the basic episodes.
they're all "epic" to me

For being a "basic episode," McKids is one of my all-time favorite AVGN episodes!
same for super pitfall! The nerd's commentary is epic
Mine is X-Men, Mario 3, T2, 32X and the Revisited Ones.
Ninja Gaiden is my favorite.
Moonwalker is almost entire his acting.
I like the Hydlides so much
In the context of James talking about “People like to point out when there are simpler episodes [like it’s a bad thing]”, am I the only one who generally prefers the simpler episodes? Like I like Action 52 and Super Pitfall more than I liked Rob the Robot or Crazy Castle (which were both still great episodes)
Nothing wrong withing a simple episode if its done right super pitfall is one of my favorites
Action 52 is one of my favorites
i like both styles, they complement eachother.
I think the basic episodes are plenty entertaining, especially for a chill rewatch, and they make me appreciate the epic ones even more when they come along.
Agree mostly. Commentary and rants are often the funniest parts. Bigger productions are fine when they don’t overshadow the humor.
this is my favorite AVGN episode
This look like filming intentionally setting the difficulty in hard mode.
I might be one of the odd ones out here but I do prefer the basic episodes. To me the Nerd was always about him playing a game, drinking beer and being angry at it. That's enough for me to be satisfied.
Well if you want someone who drinks and reviews stuff, look at the critical drinker.
Agreed. Let's call it "og" rather than "basic".
I agree. The big episodes work and they show off James' other skills but they're not strictly speaking "nerd" episodes. To me at least.
Honestly I like them too they help build the nerd as a more realistic character living his everyday life and make the times when we do get a big episode more impactfull than if we were to the big ones everytime.

@@Thifurious I’m 31, I found James’ content when I was 15. It’s fun to see how’s it’s evolved over the years. Some videos are really memorable, like his review of the wizard and SMB3, as well as his fight against the nostalgia critic around 2008.
I've actually always preferred the more simple episodes, they are always straight and to the point with comedic bits thrown in. To me they capture more of the spirit of AVGN but I still love the cinematic stuff too.
Putting it that way, I realize same here. It's nice to just hear a review full of vulgarity knowing there's a new episode
I haven't even noticed when he doesn't do diffrent angles. Nor if it's basic or not, if it's entertaining I love it.

@@Thomasmemoryscentral I agree
I think that James is making it more difficult than it has to be. In the early days, the lighting and sound wasn’t perfect, was really basic and the game room was hardly a game room. It was just an ordinary room with some games and some posters on the walls. Ironically, those were the best episodes.
no one would watch that anymore though
@outrigger wong. I watch the old episodes still, and I definitely cant say that for any episode made in the past 5 years 🤦🏼♂️

I’m glad your show is still going strong today.
Love your videos man!
He probably has its own energy plan for that one room just to save money 😂
It's probably not that bad. LEDs are really efficient, and it's not like he has all of his consoles and TVs running when he's making an episode. For extra energy savings, and for general protection of the equipment, he could turn off all the power strips he's not using. Even if he doesn't, all of them together would only total a few watts.

In my opinion, the little simple episodes that just take place in the nerd room are the best and most nostalgic.
Exactly. No need to get fancy.
The onion incident and James' real reaction to it rolling away was incredible.
all it needed... was two tiny cuts either side of the prop to create a gap for his teeth to sink into.
There goes the onion!
The premise of the avgn was to enjoy the nostalgia of days gone by. The irony is that now the nostalgia I feel is for the old avgn episodes. The epic videos are always great and very entertaining but nothing quite hits the spot like those simpler times drinking a beer and getting frustrated at gameplay. So all the way from a long time viewer in Tasmania, keep up the great work and drop as many basic vids as you want 👍
Man I feel that nostalgia for the old episodes. Chugging a rolling rock and screaming @$$. HAHA.
I agree with you Lucas
@@jakehyland5067 same with me

Hahahaha, I have watched Cinnemassacre for more of my life than I haven't (14 versus 12 years) cx it's crazy the stuff we keep up with.
I know this is a very old ep, but I'm surprised he hasn't rigged his ceiling with like rollers and attched the lights to said rollers. Letting him just roll the lights around when see fit instead of like wire hanging.
@03:12 James says, "Tough 80's wood", similar to what I have right now.
most modern affordable furniture is sawdust and glue. wood is premium luxury items noww
For what it's worth, I like the "basic" nerd episodes quite a bit. Reviewing old games with some colorful language and insults thrown in is one of the best parts of the series. The skits are just an added extra, imo. It's not necessary for its enjoyment at all.
So James, don't worry! I'm pretty sure most of us won't mind if you save your "big and wacky" episodes for once every blue moon. We enjoy your work regardless!

I tune in for the "basic" episodes. The epic episodes are just a bonus. Your videos continue to be great because you enjoy making them.
Same! I think it works great to balance the basic episodes withe the crazy ones, as James said. The entire premise of the series from the beginning was showing game footage and ranting about it. That was the simple idea that we all loved and it still works just as well today.

Thanks for the behind-the-scenes vid James. Glad to hear you are still having fun making new content and thanks for all the years of entertainment!
I can't help but feel that this... is the most inefficient setup I've ever seen.
They make ceiling lights, yet he tapes his lights to the ceiling. I mean, I've seen worse, but for a guy who's been doing this for 15 or so years and use to make a desk lamp work for lighting, this is VERY messy and inefficient.
Well, for one, we don't know on what kind of budget he's working on, and secondly, he is still doing all of these with proper games, consoles and all the related equipment. Most other reviewers set a few things up for shots, but they are doing emulators, so I feel like there's a big diference there too. I'm willing to bet there's a ton that would only ever be practical to change if he was to move location.
It could be easily imoroved! I was shocked to see him working like that.... in 2021!!!
If his room was a game, then its broken code would rival the likes of Fallout 76
Then you haven't seen many inefficient setups.
"Really tough 80's wood"- James Rolfe, 2021
James must be made from the same tree, he's withstood the test of time with just as much as that desk has.
I literally could not stop laughing watching James struggle with that onion!
We need an HGTV special dedicated to fixing James' setup
This is like the Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde meets Super Pitfall of youtube production setups. There are 16 year old girls that have more efficient camera/lighting setups that not only look better, but allow for a lot more flexibility in shooting styles. This is legit nuts.
That's how sad and pathetic this setup is.
Glad to see he's not burnt out from it. I wondered if he secretly hates doing this character but it's nice to see he's enjoying his family and this is supporting it. I've been on RUclips since 2005 so he's been with me half my life and AVGN has always made me smile, thanks James!

I'm surprised that you keep filming in your garage instead of getting an actual studio where you could have more space and everything set up correctly. Honestly, most of your complaints seem pretty petty, it appears that your setup is inefficient for what you are trying to produce.
