  • James Rolfe has produced hundreds of hours of film and video since childhood, including over 100 video game reviews. With so much experience in quick-turnaround video, he understandably gets many questions about his equipment, technique and creative philosophy.
Join James "behind the curtain" as he writes, produces, performs and edits a special mini-episode of AVGN, taking the viewer along for a revealing and entertaining look inside a Cinemassacre production. This is Angry Videogame Nerd episode 102

@@technologyproductions-ye3px I mean there are still people making decent let's plays out there, some are skilled gamers that constantly challenge themselves, some are brilliant comedians who focus more on the humoristic sides of their let's plays, all you need to do is stop watching when you're not entertained by a youtuber and search for another one, because even if they're not all great, some of them are. What I find ironic is how practical and un-nerdy he is in his production techniques. James seems like someone who doesn't get too caught up in the technical details and just has a tool box of what works, earned from hard work and experience. As an audio engineer who went to school for the trade, this is a very refreshing compared to guys who will break out a physics book to decide where to place a microphone. Not that the nitty gritty isn't interesting or useful, it's just refreshing when somebody cuts to the chase.

Effects can be a ballache and colour correction is fucking tedious though, unless you're looking for a really stylised or wacky look, then it can be loads of fun messing about with sliders. You're right though, some people really relish the editing and no one gives a shit, while others do very little and get fucktons of views. It's just the way it goes.

This was so nice to see. Whenever you get a glimpse behind an art or a hobby, you gain new respect for it, seeing how time consuming and effort taking it really is. Like you can't really fully appreciate skating before you see someone seriously practicing, since it all looks so easy in a video.
Of course you still can't still maybe fully appreciate it unless you try it yourself, but even then seeing behind the process is really enlightening.
