VHS Memories and What Nostalgia Means to Me - Cinemassacre

- Cinemassacre, this channel, is ultimately about nostalgia. Movies, games, retro topics, sometimes music. Everything I've loved in my early years, to the point of building little museums of nostalgia such as the Nerd room and the fake VHS "rental store". But today I wanted to dive into different memories. VHS ones. Filming things off TV, my favorite VHS tapes, all that sort of stuff. It's something I've been wanting to do for a while now.
This year, I’ll be making more videos like this, including movie reviews, gaming, various topics. For most of these, I will be going back to my traditional scripted format, where I write/organize what I’ll say, rather than doing it off-the-cuff like the podcast format. I feel I’m at my best this way. Unfortunately that means the podcast will not be continued. But Justin and Kieran will continue producing and editing. Justin will mostly be focused on Screenwave projects and Kieran is focused on his streaming channel.

Don’t read my name.
James you’re the best have a nice day
This felt like an old school james video.
110%! This is the kind of content i fell in love with. A video of passion. The real deal. This video genuinly brought me joy.
@@MonkeyPowerkey Agreed!
It was it was
Legit thought it was, got excited and clicked right away
Your likes are the number of the beast. I wanna like it but I would mess it up 🤣👍
“I miss being more naive and less critical.”
You have levelled me.
say no to the great reset
You needed James to articulate that for you?
I don't miss naivety... I miss my innocence.
I was never overly naive... probably not at all. But I have definitely become more critical... and cynical since I turned 40.
That was three years ago.
"i miss being more naive and less critical" : me too, James... me too.
me 3
“I miss being more naive …”
you captured nostalgia perfectly friend.
same here, I remember stumbling on all kinds of hidden gems at Family Video, Hollywood Video and People's Choice Video Express.
“and less critical” 😭
I miss the excitement of the mysterious and unknown. Of UFOS and Cryptids, the 90s documentaries that fuelled the imagination for such things.
What nostalgia means to me?
Answer:It means you have Peter Pan syndrome which means refusing to grow up
The things you do for love 🎶🎶🎶
"I miss being more naive and less critical." The true differentiation between childhood and adulthood. Again with another fantastically nostalgic video.
That really is the quote of all quotes. And sooner we figure it out, the healthier we end up.
both have their pros and cons. being more critical allows for a more refined appreciation while being naive allows for more unabashed joy.
Beat me to it!
I felt that when he said it. 👍🏿👍🏿
“What Nostalgia Means to Me.”
Nostalgia is the reason/problem why you James don’t accept the Jurassic Park sequels or even the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Or even Godzilla 2014.
"We didn't realise we were making memories, we just knew we were having fun."
~Winnie the Pooh
Me wanting to go back to the 90's era.
I’m not crying
"Oh Batha'."
*'90s
I know this is gonna sound corny but this video literally touched my heart and made me feel great and that is so wonderful since I'm having a not so great day at work
With you friend. Made me tear up.
same here!
You're watching a video at work?
@@KingKoffin on my lunch break 😅
Nah man, not corny at all. That's why most of us are here, for the feelings. James' videos always makes me feel happy.
"Whenever you're having a bad day, you can turn to something familliar for just a little comfort, no matter who you are i know that you and i could find someting to talk about that we both remembered. That's how nostalgia connects people" ~ James Rolfe
Now pin it to your wall and worship it
Great quote, should get more likes
🙌🏻
What about the Nostalgia Critic?
Gotta admit, this was a breath of fresh air.
Not really though.
Fresh, decades old air 😀
@@DOSRetroGamer The same breath of air, just freshened up a little.

James Rolfe in his truest form and his passion definitely shines through when he talks about it and the way he looks at his collection. As a film maker I shared a lot of the same experiences and vhs memories one way or another and this video hit home!
I’m the same age as James and this was very emotional to watch. Growing up in the 80s and 90s was such a pleasure and it makes me sad how much the world keeps changing. The nostalgia craze keeps raging on like an inferno. I’d give anything to revisit the 90s again. Thanks James, this was a really nice video. 👍
I have a tape recording of my grandpa telling us about stamp collection from about 1986. I miss him :(
I could listen to James talk about old stuff for days.
same, its the passion he has for the stuff he talks about.
@@T0asty- agreed!
Totally! Would love to see more of this.
Me too
I’m so glad I was born in 2006 to witness the old school and new school stuff!
Not gonna lie, this is one of the best videos you've ever done. You captured everything I felt back then and yern to feel again.
Init though! It's so wholesome, and just.. Just.. nostalgia personified! 🔥 X
“What Nostalgia Means to Me.”
Nostalgia is the reason why you James don’t accept the Jurassic Park sequels or even the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Or even Godzilla 2014.
@@Dino23968 why would you assume that? And if he does what does that have to do with anything?
yes well said as 50 year old i even got a little emotional
I know right. I’ve watched his VHS collection video about a dozen times so getting essentially a sequel is a treat
Read the description, and as much as I'll miss listening to the podcast, you've done the right thing for yourself and for your fans, James.
James telling of his kid playing video store in his VHS store recreation is the cutest thing I’ve heard in a while
I like the videos like this. It's like catching up with an old friend.
Couldn't have said it better. This video has genuine emotion and it even brought back nostalgia memories of my own.
James, you successfully summed up the essence of nostalgia: "I miss being more naive, and less critical..."
Well said !
This is my favorite video James has done since AVGN "Polybius." Its so fascinating to hear someone describe their love for physical media. Bravo, Mr. Rolfe. 🎬
James, I really love it when you do videos like this. Just you, a camera and some really great stories. Simple but wonderful.
Wow, to listen James say his youngest child likes to play "Video Store" made me so happy, it shows old things can still have the same charm for young people that they had when they were the only things around.
If they are exposed to whatever it is at a young age, they will hopefully start to like it.
This was actually heartwarming and very enjoyable and relaxing to watch. Truely hit home and right on point. Great video James
Absolutely and the fact that the Internet has taken out a lot of them mystery is absolutely on point. But ironically enough the Internet is how we are even watching this
Those Friday nights…renting a new movie, video game and grabbing a pizza. Everyone had their video store routines back then. I def miss those days. 😢
"I just miss being more naive and less critical" almost got me to start tearing up. I don't know why I needed to hear that, but I think so many of us these days do. You captured what's most amazing about the earliest years of our lives in one sentence, I think.
Of all the RUclipsrs I’ve ever seen, James Rolfe has the biggest heart on the platform, he’s the 80’s Steven Spielberg of RUclips reviewers.
Oh.
More stuff like this that’s personally written by James. This was a great watch.
Dang James! I almost shed a tear here. You've perfectly explained how it all feels when you dive into your memories.
Wow, he even made his own VHS📼box art...😮 Now that's love and dedication...💯✔️ It's great seeing true passion...❤️
Glad to see James taking control of his content.
He never lost it. Everything done is approved by him
@@doctorfeinstone6524 Well, there was the Monster Madness stuff that was clearly more so performed by him, but not so much by him. This video was propper James. This was clearly his pet project. So i get what they meant.
@@doctorfeinstone6524 he gave up a lot of control in the last few years or so......this video felt like he wrote it...it has his passion in it
@@MonkeyPowerkey Thanks for clarifying for me. Much appreciated.
Dude, please.
Glad to see James back at the video store.
This is such a bittersweet video. Reconnecting with the amazing happiness and innocence of your youth, but then realizing that you can never go back.
I’d love to go back.
16:08 James's slight struggle to open the plastic case and get the game inside, was the most nostalgic part of this video to me by far.
This stuff is great, I'm 100% behind seeing more of James's scripted content like this
James is always at his best when he speaks from the heart.
Thank you for doing this James. We all want more videos like this one. You’re home video store is awesome!
I say this with the absolute utmost respect as a fellow media archiver: you haven't just created a shrine, you have created a museum. A preservation of a golden past, nearly forgotten by even those who lived through it. You are living the dream, to have a video rental store in your own home. What an absolutely beautiful and wonderful video, thank you for sharing your collection with us James.
This one hits differently for me. I turned 40 last year and most everything that James loves and experienced as a kid I also remember fondly. I love movies and video games along with buying CDs back in the day and completing collections for bands and actors. Digital has changed things and yes convenience is nice but I will always pickup my favorite bands new album like Metallica or AC/DC.
Yep, I'm 43, so right there with ya!
James this is EXACTLY the kind of content we love and will eat it up whenever you decide to release it 🍴10/10 on this one dude!
Absolutely
Absolutely agree! 👍🏻
So glad I was alive and got to experience the pre Internet era! So many memories come jolting back as you're reminiscing on your own! This video really hit me to the bone.... 😢🙂 I really miss these times. Great video! Thanks Nerd!! 🖖🏽🤓
Its mind blowing to think that the majority of the people watch this never having experienced a movie rental store, VHS taping, TV guides and how it was not being able to look up IMDB or a trailer on RUclips to get info of a movie. You just watched it. This makes me feel ancient. Unreal.
I'll put it simply.
This video is a true gem.
Let's preserve it.
Let's record it on a video tape and put it in the nerd room
This is the type of videos I love. James talking about his passion with his heart. Loved this video. 11/10
I love how detailed and insightful he is about his memories and random things in the past that I forgot about. Like looking through the tv guide / newspaper and recording random shows on vhs. There is no content like that out there in mainstream tv / movies / documentaries. That's still the one great thing about youtube; Everyday people making content they other or everyday people can relate to or share with each other, that hasn't been processed through Hollywood or a production company. And it also allows the everyday person to work on their talents and use RUclips as a platform to share it with.
I loved this video. I just turned 40, and this took me back. Every Friday night pizza and video store. I would look around and leave with a movie I had seen a hundred times. Like Ernest goes to camp or E.T. I smiled the whole video!
Nostalgia has a strong connection to our hearts. James wields nostalgia perhaps better than anyone I know of!
I actually wish he was a little more critical of the nostalgia. Like in nostalgia examiner
Hes amazing but i want more podcast
This makes me quite teary eyed.
Why are there no other people treat older stuff as newer and updated?
Man, games, movies, CD's, tapes, they all meant so much more when we had to go through something to get them.
I wanna record this episode to VHS. One of your best videos James!
I still look for and sometimes find old recorded VHS tapes at the local flea markets, specifically looking for anything that might potentially included TV commercials.
This is the content we want James keep it authentic!
Authentic is the perfect description
That is exactly the kind of stuff we want to see, James. Thank you for being yourself and sharing all these memories.
This hit so close to home. I'm approaching my 30's and I can relate to everything that James is saying here. I can't even begin to explain the importance he's had to me, and countless others, when it comes to finding your own path and cherishing those otherwordly memories. Sometimes I fear that I've lost that childhood magic of discovering new movies and music, but videos like this makes me realize I've only scratched the surface. I've been listening to Iron Maiden's Senjustu a lot lately, and it feels so great to hear James put perfect words to my own feelings about growing up in a changing world.
I remember the last gasps of video rental, going to Hollywood Video to pick out DVDs and games on Fridays with my parents. That old rental store is a used dvd and cd resale shop now, my son and I go pick out DVDs now. I really love that it lives on in that way, when I see the same old wall decor that never came down, the Hollywood hills with the sign, a dinosaur taking up the whole wall growling at you.
Content like this I why James is definitely one of the contenders for G.O.A.T. internet content makers.
💯. I miss these types of videos. Simple, passionate, real
Binge-watching is definitely convenient, but in the old days when we got only one new episode of a show each week, it not only allowed us to savor the shows and remember them better, but we were also all on the same page as we discussed our favorite shows. Nowadays, people watch at all kinds of different paces, leading to the common question of “How far along are you in the show?” Sure there was some of that going on before with re-runs, but now it’s all over the place, with so much content that’s available for instant streaming.
For what it's worth, there are still new series that get weekly episodes; at least on TV. I remember most anime (Japanese cartoons) still working that way at least as of a few years ago.
unlimited media consumption isn't healthy for us? Limitations on consumption amount actually enhance experiences? that's the opposite of what the world today tells us
In the UK for many years, we only had 4 TV channels to choose from. Soap operas were hugely popular then so we’d all follow the same show and talk about it at work the next day. Now it’s all changed of course.
For me it was going out during a hot summer day to the local video store, entering in through the doors the wall of aircon hitting you in the face as the scent of the vhs platic mixed with the tape cleaning fluid hit you all at once, puts a smile to my face remembering it. In fact was discussing this very thing the other week with my co-workers most has never lived in age without internet.
when i was a little kid, my parents taped cartoons onto vhs for me from the tv. i still have the tape to this day and it has old commercials and stuff too. one of my most treasured items for sentimental value
This really takes me back. Especially the various Blockbuster sleeves in the background. I worked at Blockbuster from 1999-2004 so I remember those very well and miss walking the isles. Some people will never know that joy.
Your young 80s
Blockbuster was always my favourite place in 2000....it was as magical as Toys R Us lol
The shot of the blockbuster card punched me right in the gut and I don’t know why.
Browsing video store aisles and going to a video arcade... some experiences that are impossible to really understand the special joy of unless you lived through that era.
@@KabukiKid Amen.
How do you feel about the fact that there's now a whole generation nostalgic for old Angry Nerd videos?
Things came full circle and James himself became someone's nostalgia! It's true for me!
When he pointed out that his original review of Simon's Quest is now older than the game was when he reviewed it, that's when I realised AVGN was my nostalgia.
I loved the little callback to the Bernstein/Berenstain video. This is one of your best videos because it's all you, not other people's thoughts or words.
Man this hit me right in the nostalgia feels
This tickled my nostalgia for old cinemasacre. It’s hard to believe that some of us have been watching James so long that he holds a nostalgic place in our hearts. Again James thanks and keep doing this!
Absolutely amazing video. You summed up my youth perfectly. Thank you!
I agree with you and awesome James Rolfe summed up your youth perfectly
I just don't understand why he's never watched Blood Diner? That part was weird.
@@theblessedhope1 I know! I said the same thing when I saw that.
Convenience has always been my biggest thing. As soon as we could start downloading movies on the Internet in the 2000s that’s what I shifted all of my efforts into building massive hard drives full of media that I can still draw on to this day. The biggest thing I miss about the old system was going to the video store and discovering movies that I’ve never heard of and taking a chance on random movies that were only one dollar rentals.
There is something about this video that I keep coming back to. Really just seems to capture that nostalgic memory of going to the video store for me. Or more so, just remembering a simpler, more carefree, past.
I was born in 2000 and wasn't much of a movie kid, but this video is still touching... No matter what it was that made our imagination go wild, this type of video brings it out
Same here. Since I discovered this video several months ago I always come back for a rewatch.
Careful,this guy hates women.
This vid definitely hit the feels. Was like an old school James video. Hoping for more great videos like this in the future.
I missed videos like this. I could listen to James talk about his hobbies for hours.
My dad is a movie fan and one of the early adapters of VHS in my hometown so I had similar experience of trying to videotape cartoons, anime, movies and other stuff. I also wrote down goofy and incorrect names on those spines of VHS. Thank you for sharing this nostalgia.
It was really in my early childhood since I grew up at the tale end of the era of VHS, but I think you've summed up my experience of going to video stores and renting games and movies. Especially growing up a Godzilla fan, I was always on the look out for those back then because they weren't all readily available, and there was just something special about finally finding one in the wild.
Thanks for bringing up some of these memories and taking me back to the past James. You're the best.
12:38 Thanks for introducing us to many things. not just Monster Madness.
8:50
"I regret cutting out the commercials because sometimes, that was the best part."
Truer words have never been spoken.
We spend most of childhood wishing we were adults. Then when we're adults we dream of being children again. Something human about always longing for something you can't have.
Being only 3 years apart in age, I completely understand how you feel about movies, music, TV and video games. I'll never have as much as you, but thanks for sharing your collection and more.
Also, Nerd needs to play some Bayou Billy! :)
Yes! More of this style content please.
EDIT: I asked for this and got it! Thank you, Cinemassacre!
James back in the video store is everything I needed this week
Watching your older videos late at night at home or working night shift as a nurse is nostalgic to me
This was a great video and brought back a lot of nostalgia for me just based on your stories. As much as I love having all my music at my finger tips, it makes it all that much harder to find something to listen to for some reason. To scroll through hundreds of movies on the different streaming choices makes it that much harder to find something to watch for that same reason. But going to a video store meant that movie/movies that you rented were going to be watched and that was it. When I saw your Iron Maiden CD's it reminded me of when I'd buy a Maiden album and put it on and listen to it front to back while playing my NES. I'd play my games and take in the album and eventually gain an appreciation for the whole album and not just the big hit. Keep up the great work and I appreciate what you've done.
Exactly the same memories James, i am George Mario from Athens Greece and i had the same childhood as you. The video clubs, the vhs tapes, the recording, the tv guides with circles over the movies, everything was all the same. How do i miss rhe Saturday night visit at the video club (store) so i can keep the tape for one more day, because every sunday the stores were closed! It was the BEST times ever!!!!!
This really hits hard… This is why I love Cinemassacre and James.
100%
16:30 I remember getting really excited by a writeup in a magazine of the Friday the 13th movies which detailed who got killed by Jason (or killer influenced by Jason) in the movies and how they were done away with. Nowadays that could be easily found online but back then, finding that magazine with those facts was like finding a bit of lost treasure.
it's amazing how much of my childhood world was built around the knowledge contained in like four magazines and three books my parents bought me randomly on trips to get groceries and which I just re-read ten million times because I was a kid and they fascinated me and they were also all I had available for entertainment.
I think cable tv, having to watch what I was on. I think watching so many different things made me a intellectually well rounded person, and interested in more things then I wouldn’t have. Been interested or knew about if it wasn’t for having to watch whatever was all. I had so many favorite recorded tapes. One we loved so much we watched so ,inch it broke. I loved this video. Very nostalgic
The man became a punching bag because of the podcast and he hits back with the most wholesome video he's done in years. What a legend.
Really? What happened?
whats the story behind the podcast?
@@frankf684 I disagree.
If James' tape collection was an actual video store, I'd work there overtime.
Same here
Work there? I’d volunteer!
I’ve never had a chance to decorate the video store style room, because I had too much VHS tapes in my collection. A lot of these I have to get rid of, because I got too much space for it. So I did transfer them to DVD and digital, and give the VHS away.
The old VHS covers had me pretty misty, TNT's MonsterVision put a lump in my throat, and the Crestwood monster books really got the tears going. Thank you so much for this!
Jeez man, you took me back. I remember renting the Spider-Man Carnage game at a local mom and pop video game and movie store. The store wasn’t even a building, it was a mobile home lol but you walked in and BAM, movies and games everywhere.. I remember begging my mom to rent the Spider-Man game along with a Rambo movie lol. That was a memorable weekend......
*This video made me cry, not only tears of the nostalgia of my youth, but also because I have a large collection of movies, music, and games myself, and I just realized that I have no family or children to leave them to :'( I'm so happy that you have children to leave your lifetime collection to. Remember, what is most important in the end is that it's not what you have, but who you have to share it with. Family is the most important thing in the world..*

You're very right, which makes it even more imperssive how James taps into his psychotic/angry side when doing AVGN, because it couldn't be further from his actual persona. I have a dream to meet and chat with him one day. Probably won't happen, but he's helped many of us in many ways.
The video store was my heaven when I was a kid! I was lucky enough to take my son to family video for a bit before they all closed, so he got to experience at least. The mom and pop stores were always cooler though. I miss the old days so much. So much so I'm working on a movie store room like James and a videogame room that both play constant 24hr loops of old trailers, music videos, commercials and shows from the 80s and 90s .
This video made me cry. As somebody who has watched your videos for over ten years. Thank you for everything

as always James.. really appreciate the nostalgic journeys you take us. your description of how you felt as a child is so close to home, it almost brought me to tears.
This video really brightened up my day, James. Hits ya right in the feels in the best kind of way, and you really did swell work in crafting this video together. So stoked for more videos!
I love these sensitive videos with James, where he's sincerely expressing something that he loves. For all of us nostalgia means different things, and for me, watching early AVGN seasons takes me right back to my childhood. To me, AVGN is as nostalgic as Disney's Aladdin or Lion King. It's the ultimate comfort video when I have a bad day.
I really enjoyed this one, it took me on a strong nostalgia Journey of the 90s.
This hit Me as hard as dragon of my dreams ❤ been a fan since 06 and am thankful for your work 🙏
When I was 12 in 1990 I would do the same thing with watching random movies on HBO. I went through a lot of duds and then Clockwork Orange came on. I had never heard of it before and it blew my mind. I couldn't believe a movie like that could exist.
I am glad you doing this James. For me, part of the nostalgia is just watching you, talking about films. Thank you.
