I have both of these cameras. I have experience with both! I can tell you exactly which one to buy if you’re still considering buying one of them.
Go with the Canon EOS R if:
- You love to try Canon’s new great RF lenses (L versions are heavy and expensive, but offer great quality).
- You don’t shoot important stuff such as weddings (due to single card slot). Yes, SD cards do fail from time to time. I worked at a camera shop and I know this!!!
- You want a simple menu and a smartphone-like touch screen.
- You only do photography. Video features are limited with this camera.
- You have larger hands. 😂
- You want to do vlogging. The flip screen is awesome.
- you want to rely on lens image stabilisation (IS) for slower shutter speeds and/or video when hand held.
- You don’t mind heavier setup.
Go with the Sony A7 III if:
- You want to have lighter setup, Tamron and Sigma offer light lenses that offer great quality as well.
- You want to try wedding photography. Dual card slots let’s you worry about taking great photos instead of worrying about losing them. You can also save videos on 2 SD cards, which is an amazing feature for a camera at this price!
- You want to do both photography and video with one camera! This camera is great for photo (24mp is really enough if you don’t crop heavily in editing) and for video! 120fps in full HD.
- You have small hands like I do 😂 it just feels better in my hand!
- You don’t want to vlog. Unfortunately, this camera doesn’t have a flip screen. (The Sony A7 IV does).
- You want in body image stabilisation (IBIS), which works better than any lens image stabilisation (IS) from Canon and I have tried RF L lenses. Keep in mind, Canon offers the best IS in lenses and even binoculars!

My Sony A7iii with my Sony 35mm 1.4 is far sharper than you displayed in that tree comparison at 1080p. Pretty sure you missed focus. I use Canons for my full time job and love them. They are fun to use and produce good results for photo and video. There is no bias in my opinion. Makes me think you have one when you display the Sony like that.
Fact you definitely missed focus on the Sony A7iii at 1080p, half way around the tree is more in focus than the front of it.

Well you didn’t set up the Sony for success then :), you were probably within the minimum focus distance of the lens you were using. It’s completely obvious that it is focused half way around the tree.

Guessed right every time! The a7iii's lack of crop in video just makes that separation way more prominent. Great side by side Sidney!
The canon looked better in my eyes. Seems the Sony has better dynamic range... also focus was missed on the tree as others have commented with the Sony. I’ve shot professionally with the Sony A7iii and I loved using it. Only down side for me was I hate the weird power on and off button and no fully rotating screen.
1:14 To anyone wondering, this is backfocused on the Sony side. You can see further back on the tree that it was sharp. He should've chosen a better frame to use as a comparison.
Thanks for the comparison. However after you cropped in, you switched the order and you didn't say which one is Camera A or B so it's very confusing. I often had to play back and see which is which.

Despite being a EOS R shooter, the Sony seems to have faster AF and better dynamic range. But Color science is a Canon thing despite your video and AF is smoother with normal motion on Canons. Both great systems at this price range.

I want to start landscape photography... I'm confused between two option 1. Canon eos r - Ef 16-35 F4L ( Rf 15-35 out of budget and there is no F4L rf version)
2. Sony AS3 +16-35 F4L
I love canon color, flip out screen, touch menu system.. My first choice is canon but there is no ibis and 5fps...Which option should i go.. Is it bad decession to buy ef lense in this time? Dont suggest R6 because out of budget.....
Watching this video in 2160p/ 4k on my Mac 5k monitor, the Sony is obviously sharper. I picked the Sony on every blind test, and I am actually a fan of Canon's standard profile.

The A7 III had a missed focus or was placed too close for the lens minimum focusing distance, given how the bark becomes sharper further back on the tree.
The tree was paid to look more flattering with the Canon clearly.

@@shreechanchitrakar1174 It's all how you treat it in post and your lens choice too! I've had an FS7 for two years now and you can do sooooo much with that camera depending on lenses, filters, lighting, colour grade. Yeah it has a fundemental differences in the way it treats colour and doesn't quite render skin tones the best but it really is not bad at all hey!! And it has definitely gotten better over the years!
You definitely have a bias in this video. You are missing focus in almost all shots with the sony... The color science test u obviously used the sony in HD and the Canon in 4k and even missed focus there too... the autofocus test is worthless because you can customize the AF speed and sensitivity and even turn off the face tracking in the sony, you didnt specify the settings u had. WTF is that stabilization test? u can unconsciously move your hands differently... I would re do this whole video and do it right. I know u use sony but it seemed like ur trynna make sony look bad and you look like you dont know what you are doing with the sony.

I know people talk about the crop in 4k but I do like the crop feature 1.6 to give you that extra reach in photography. Loving the EOS R, the 50mmf1.2 nick name is butter cause background blur is butter smooth.
Great video as usual! If only the EOS R could shoot 120 fps I would've been sold, the 4K shots look unbelievable. I've been using the A7III for about a month now and I couldn't be any happier.

Both very similar. It would come down to ease of use and configuration for me and canon always wins in that department.

A7 III is a Pro level camera. EOS R is a semipro level full frame. Canon promises a new and true Pro model soon. Sony is going to launch the A7 IV next year.

After reading the previous thread, it sounds like maybe the auto focus was go blame, but if you want to demonstrate and compare sharpness, wouldn't you use manual focus and make sure the shot is tack sharp?

Did you have digital stabilizer on with the canon during the rolling test for either formats?
Canons cameras come out a lot more contrasty, while that's really nice it doesn't allow for that much flexibility in post when it comes to low-light

Ebrahim Saadawi right, Clog 422 10bit 480bit it’s way more capable than sony for color grading
The most struggle I've ever had correcting and grading footage was the A7s S-LOG2. The base colours you start from are just too far from what you want and the codec is just not strong enough to push that far at 100mbps 4:2:0 8bit. The EOS R C-Log footage is BRILLIANT! It's already close to the final image and if you want you can push it anywhere. Just lovely images.
Damn I was really just about to buy a a7iii but I preferred all of the eos-r photos. Sucks that it has cropped 4k and no good slow motion 😩😩

IDK why but Canon cameras add a hell lotta sharpening and the way it's done makes videos look crappy. Agreed that the A7III shoots crappy 1080 but you can simply record in 4K and downscale to 1080 in post, that way the videos out of the A7III look way better compared to Canon.

Armando and PotatoJet's video is _odd_ though. Armando even shot everything on the A7 III in S-Log3, which is a very weird thing to do, and the results are inconsistent with the results of other reviewers.
Armando is heavily biased
I know Armando personally. He’s. It biased. He prefers what works better for him.
@@SidneyDiongzon I personally don't think Armando is biased in favour of Canon. It would make absolutely no sense for him to spend a ton of money on Sony gear if he was.
But I _do_ think he has a lot to learn about using his gear correctly - S-Log3 is not the way to shoot except in a very select few circumstances. He also has a bit to learn about editing his footage. The video he and PotatoJet did would have been a lot better if Armando went with a more suitable profile and the both of them matched the editing output to each other.
Instead it became a crippling show of Sony using S-Log3 and Armando choosing a very different style post-processing from PotatoJet. Not really a _camera_ comparison.

Most sony users like myself can and should be able to admit that canon cameras look nicer in box. I know my brand sony has color issues with the default profiles untouched, my eyes know and can see that clearly.....but when you tweak it and create a lut using a color chart, you will not notice a difference that makes you want to give up high iso performance, FF dof, ibis, and uncropped FF 4k.

I’ve chosen the eos r every time, just the rolling shutter seems a little bit better on a73 just in 4K, Canon colors, no words, just perfect ! Autofocus on both are very close but canon is the best with dual pixel .

I have two observations. One canon dynamic range is so much better than it used to be. In most canon v sony comparisons that is what I always could tell right away which was which. Two both seem to have very good results overall. I think that (as long as you don't need super slow-motion) both do an excellent job. I like your unique style Sidney. Keep it up.
Seems like you have an issue(or was on purpose) with your A7 III as most of the shots and video were extremely out of focus. I have seen tons of footage from the A7 III and the video is usually WAY sharper then what you were showing.
The skin texture on the AF test is way better on canon. The one on Sony looks mushy and textureless like taken by a cellphone. I observed the same in Tony's comparison video too. I picked the EOS R everytime on this video, except in the Color science test @ 2:15 .
I just purchased the EOS R for these reasons.
That's what happen when a toy manufacturer like Sony makes a camera. It's just nice to look at with it's sparkling spec sheet but a man can't use it as a real tool when the time comes. Seriously, there's no real photography potential with Sony.

KEITH KUHN The A7III is probably brighter, considering the maximum iso has six digits instead of five. Canon needs to innovate.
Probably due to the wider lens mount throat diameter with the Canon compared to the narrow mount of the Sony. The lens effective T-stop+Canon's mount is physically wider allowing more transmission of light even if the same aperture was used on both systems.
This was hard to follow. You label the cameras A and B, then crop in so close that it’s hard to tell which is which, and then label them canon or sony abandoning the original A/B labeling.

You can just add a bunch of contrast in post to get the same result.
Athaeus I’m the prime example of someone who thinks they can buy a decent camera and get good results, honestly my iPhone video looks better than the video i take on my a7iii.

Well, I gave both cameras they’re shot and however they performed is what is it. Mind you, I’m a Sony fan. So if Canon performed better, then Canon performed better.

If you almost do not like to edit in post production, the canon is better.

If canon fixed the problem of IBIS or In body stabilization in Eos R. Because rolling video is worst. Wating for announcement of Upcoming EOS R upgrade with two card slots and IBIS.
This video was so good, made up my mind in that 3-4minutes *edit* it’s the a7
Sony messes up the tint; it makes tree trunks (brown colors etc) look magenta, and human skin/faces look green. If it were always consistently wrong one way or the other, it'd be an automatic fix to offset it by a constant value. But it's not consistently wrong, so it is a manual process to adjust the tint depending on the subject of each shot. Seems like a dealbreaker for me. It was a similar issue with magenta colors on Android Pixel phones, which was the major reason why I switched to iPhone simply for the video recording performance.
That dynamic range and stabilization though! Sony kills it! Also a7iii colours are amazing in contrast with armandos video! Which colour profile did you use in the cameras!? Canon just seems to oversharpen the footage! I prefer my a7iii's footage in all ways in this video!
The stabilization was much better on the R - are you sure you didn't get them mixed up. I'm a Nikon shooter just to note.
bro I really enjoy your videos, you are funny and comes with some interestings facts. I think there is someting wrong with this specific video and don't get me wrong, I'm not a sony owner but I really dont think the Sony footage looks as bad as it looks in this video
Both cameras will take awesome videos & pics. It’s about which camera feels best in your hand, usability, comfort and maybe some unique features. Just about any modern camera will give good quality pics and video.

I know it's only anecdotal, but from Potato Jet's vid I thought EOS R had superior colour asthetic, but I mostly chose the Sony in this vid.

I feel like a7iii is better (personal opinion) and I can tell it right away which is which. A7iii feels a little dull sometimes but it is really good compared to canon's autofocus. And tbh canon's pictures feels a little exaggerated. Overall very nice comparison. Keep it up!

Why is it that in most reviews, the EOS R seems as sharp, or sharper (here looks better than the A7III). The only place I see the EOS R looking consistently soft and terrible are Max Yuryev's tests? I like and trust Max and his tests a lot, but most test dont show softness like his.
