"But your good opinion is rarely bestowed, and therefore more worth the earning" The dialogue is poetry. Every word, appreciated. The delivery of the words is unmatched by any version of P&P
The language is so beautiful. Event though it's a confrontational scene, one of my favorite bits of dialogue from the miniseries is after Lady Catherine catches up with Lizzie who previously left her in the garden of Longbourn after being accused of being engaged to Mr. Darcy. They're next to Lady Catherine's carriage when the woman accuses Lizzie of being determined to make Mr. Darcy "the contempt of the world" because Lizzie won't commit to not marrying him should he propose to her again. Lizzie responds to Lady Catherine by saying, "I am only resolved to act in a manner which will constitute my own happiness without reference to you or to any person so wholly unconnected with me." What a beautiful way to blow someone off by essentially saying, "I don't have to ask permission of anyone in how to live my life, least of all you who I barely know."
This still makes me laugh. The awkwardness. He's practically publicly indecent for the period and she's been caught doing the Regency equivalent of Facebook stalking. No wonder she can't wait to get out of there, lol.
The man himself Just as in the portrait... Mmm Lizzy hoping earth would just crack nd she would hide herself... Without him seeing her at Pemberley... Caught unawares.... Thank god she saw him alone sans caroline Bingley breathing down his neck.... 😂😉

Jeanette Armstrong It would have taken so long to get dressed then too. Not just putting on some jocks, jeans and shirt with maybe a pair of flip flops or trainers like you can now.
His house indeed too big for accomplishing that feat. I mean, can you imagine how long it must have taken for Elizabeth to reach the main door? Mr. Darcy had plenty time to wear 4 layers of clothes to catch them.
As a man, the best moment in the series for me was when Elizabeth, who was sat at the piano assisting Mr Darcy's younger sister, slowly lifts her eyes and looks across the room at him, and there was a recognition of their love for each other. Beautiful !
I'm going to disagree with you there, if I may? At this point he has no idea she might be thawing (because one is always the last person to know if a woman fancies you), he's just on his best behaviour, pleased she's there and not tearing him a new one - and she is sort of conveying "am I being kind enough to your sister?" vibes. But she is, I agree definitely more interested in him and prepared to reevaluate him. But I agree, it's a rather nice look of new understanding.

I've just come from a site where the majority of references to 'Pride and Prejudice' are of the movie. To me, it's inexplicable. This is by far the best version, and it's nowhere near as good as the book itself!
@@Musicienne-DAB1995 I've just watched both versions and the movie seemed so lacking after the series, there was not enough time to explore the subtleties and shifting emotions. Elizabeth seemed to take more time with the statues than anyone. And secondary character like Collins seemed to take much of the precious runtime. Characters seemed as if cardboard cutouts in comparison to lively and realistic depiction of the series where banter and emotional hits were the driving force. They tried to recapture the magic but missed out on some key ingredients. It had pretty cinematography and scenery, I suppose, but that's the extent of what it made me FEEL. While the series I could rewatch forever. I feel similarly to Poirot series vs. Hollywood movies. The characters turn grandiose and inhuman for the big screen instead of having warmness, realism and flaws like the series.
@@InternetNonsense I completely agree with your criticisms of the movie, but I will suggest that time constraints were not the main problem. I say this because the 1995 'Sense and Sensibility' movie also took liberties with the original novel (dispensing with Lady Middleton, and imagining Margaret as a girl interested in travel), yet is an utter delight to watch. It is, as you say, the reduction of subtlety and wit in the name of overt emotion that makes the 2005 movie far weaker than the 1995 miniseries (which also took liberties with the novel).
I will say, about two years ago I watched this series for the mere purpose of criticizing it so I could see how the 2005 film was so much more superior, in terms of the actors playing the characters, the soundtrack, and like all my other fellow Americans who get bored so easily: the length. But WHOA. I was not expecting to love it as much I did. Minutes into the first episode I felt really connected to the characters and their believable portrayals from the actors, while also feeling ashamed of how I had judged it so quickly. And now every year around Christmas time (around the time when I first saw it) I still get the same sensation as I did before as I hear the notes of the opening credits. And I get excited to go along the journey with Lizzie Bennet of falling in love with Mr. Darcy all over again. I don't think anything on TV or film has elicited a feeling like that in me, I'm glad I hold this one so dear to my heart!!
I had a friend who, even before the other version, thought I was boring watching this. She teased me until I sat her down to watch it. Of course she fell in love with it, quotes it endlessly, watches it as a comfort movie and completely forgets that she ridiculed me for my love of it, in fact, she would lead people to believe she introduced to to me....the thankless trollope.
My wife and I have enjoyed watching this version for years. It is well acted by all the cast....it is well directed and the scenes/sets are incredibly detailed.... Just such a work of art
I like the inclusion of this scene because it gives Lizzy an insight into Darcy's more laid-back side and it's also a lack of judgement by the both of them and merely rather embarrassment which is so cute and amusing because they're probably thinking the same thing, "What must (s)he think of me?!" 😂
Absolutely love this version of pride and prejudice. Colin Firth IS Mr Darcy. The movie is ok but I will always adore this BBC mini series. Have lost count of how many times I've watched it.
I am always tickled by the brilliantly acted total discombobulation of both Elizabeth and Darcy, followed by Darcy's rush to get properly dressed so he can engage her in conversation while in the meantime she panics. He recovers his composure first. It's very well done.
This production is remarkably faithful to the novel, but I gotta say - I love the little changes and additions. Like Darcy arriving disheveled and having zero prep before facing Elizabeth, and Elizabeth’s mortified “we must leave here at once!”
"I hope you're not displeased with Pemberley..." "No not at all." "And you approve of it?" "Very much!" "Oh good because it will very soon be the future home for the rest of your life."
The smile on Darcy's face when he says "...therefore more worth the earning." *Swoon* Darcy: "You are not leaving?" The urgency in his voice as if to say: 'I haven't stopped thinking about you now here you are. You can't leave.'
Colin Firth IS MR. DARCY!! When you think of Pride and Prejudice Colin Firth comes to mind, there could be no other. I just love it when the proud Mr. Darcy is at a loss of words and repeats himself, even Ms. Bennett has a laugh about that. Just love Colin Firth in his other movies too. He has such a presence on the screen. Even though in 1995 he was only 35 and is now 55 he still looks damn good and I think as he gets older he will always look good.
The symbolism of a dive in the pond, washing away perceptions. Rebirth of the relationship on equal ground. Humility with gentility. Cinderella would be proud. Equality vs pretense. We love introducing this particular rendition to each of our children in turn as they mature and are able to appreciate the nuanced communication.
I read this novel when I was 11 years old. This series is my favourite, and I bought it many years ago. I am so glad many people like this series too .
My favorite part is Darcy running down the stairs, frantically buttoning his waistcoat and coat and charging after Elizabeth like, "Oh, no, my girl, you don't get away that easily!"
He's so desperate. I know that feeling; like you'd run down the carriage if you had to. But mostly I see that seen and I'm terribly envious of his coat! If I had such a coat, and I wanted to chase a lady, I suspect she'd not run very fast or far!
Alas, if it were me I would have forgotten to do up my flies, thus ruining everything for ever "You are not leaving?" (Hurriedly does up flies) Elizabeth, (horrified and disgusted) "I think we must"
It's adorable to see this scene as you realize how much Mr Darcy's love for Lizzie as well as her character has affected him deeply..he is much more impulsive and starts to enjoy simple things in life like he never did before.:)
The best film of Pride and Prejudice ever. And I love its length. Simply marvelous and wonderfully filmed. Also, a special nod to Colin Davis for his wonderful music.
@@jasminedo3507 In modern words they loosely said: Darcy: "I hope you're not leaving because you don't like the estate/my house" Elizabeth: "Oh, of course not." Darcy: "So... that means you like the house?" Elizabeth: "Of course. It would be hard for anyone to dislike it, don't you think?" Darcy: "Yes, but since you tend to dislike things often, it means that when you like something, it is even more rewarding. Earning your good opinion is much better than earning other people's good opinion." (Undertones: I care more about your opinion that other people's opinions/you have good taste and I admire it/I'm happy when you approve of me)
No doubt, Mr. Darcy almost NEVER relaxes like this, even in private. ANd on the rare occasion he does . . . look who shows up to seem him half-undressed! I can practically hear him in my mind, saying, "Oh, SHIT! It's Lizzie!"
when i was at Uni, we studied Austen, and the tutour showed us this clip. when she turned back to the class, we all had dreamy looks on our faces, and i put my hand up and said "can we see that again, please". she oblidged
Lol, being shirtless would have called for uproar from book fans. Glad they did it. It would have looked so bizzare. And if he were shritless Lizzie just wont stand there and talk to him. She would instantly run away.😂
In interview he said the script called for him to be nude. Be still my heart! But the BBC would not allow it. The film makers thought about undershorts, but this was rejected. It was decided it would be nearly fully clothed.
@geria8758 having that conversation in the nip would be hilarious. "And just as handsome as his portrait, if less formally attired." You don't say, Mrs Gardener. "Mr Darcy!" "Miss Bennett!" "I had business with my steward. So I rode on ahead." Ah yes, so I see.
Not so much proud but a misunderstood guy who actually is all the qualities that women want, when you get to know him -- and he's even richer than his friend, who was actually the one that first stands out as being amazing and having all the girls swoon and chase over him.
Oh yeah the show Runners definitely knew what they were doing with this no inappropriate nudity by modern standards. But it would have been basically equivalent to her singing in his literal underwear from the time period Viewpoint. Which makes her reaction all the better and yet allow them to keep a relatively low age rating on the series.
No matter how many times I watch this, it makes me giggle like a maniac. Why does this make me swoon way more than most romantic scenes from modern movies??
I think that was the filmmaker's actual point. Fitz Darcy at home is relaxed and able to enjoy himself a little bit. He's come up early to do business, but takes the time to indulge in something he's probably done since he was a boy. Getting caught out by Lizzy is... unfortunate. (giggle)
Excellent "Pride and Prejudice ". The acting rhe best I have experienced in the telliing of the story.. I think a classic that should be shown for ever. The best of the best..
What can I say Jane Austin's novels my favourite. Watching Colin Firth as Mr Darcy all those years ago made my heart flutter and still does. I think Colin Firth is my favourite actor of all time. I have not seen him in one film when my heart does not beat ten to the dozen and I am in my seventh decade!!!
Watched the entire thing on Christmas Eve. It was meant to serve as mindless entertainment, but I found myself invested before the first episode was even done. Since then I've finished the book and plan to watch it all over again. Someone help me...

@@fanfandoming8225Where can I see/get a copy of the musical please?
I don't think a movie version could ever do the book justice, plus this Lizzie and Darcy have such chemistry together.
And the chemistry is real... They two actors dated for a while during and after this show.
Where did you watch it?
I had a friend who, even before the other version, thought I was boring watching this. She teased me until I sat her down to watch it. Of course she fell in love with it, quotes it endlessly, watches it as a comfort movie and completely forgets that she ridiculed me for my love of it, in fact, she would lead people to believe she introduced to to me....the thankless trollope.
StrangeViolette Indeed, she sounds like an unsavory ruffian! :D
My wife and I have enjoyed watching this version for years. It is well acted by all the cast....it is well directed and the scenes/sets are incredibly detailed....
Just such a work of art
This is the best adaptation of Pride and Prejudice I have ever watched and a lot of credit goes to Colin Firth.
Most true to the book
And Jennifer Ehle. She carried the whole thing.
I like the inclusion of this scene because it gives Lizzy an insight into Darcy's more laid-back side and it's also a lack of judgement by the both of them and merely rather embarrassment which is so cute and amusing because they're probably thinking the same thing, "What must (s)he think of me?!" 😂
Прекрасная экранизация романа и замечательный подбор актеров в фильме. Спасибо создателям этого шедевра !
Hmmmm
Wellsaid
Sad... Seperation
Happy.. Union
All's well that ends well...
Lol or woke they😂
Absolutely love this version of pride and prejudice.
My god, but the way those trousers fit, was a thing of beauty. and Colin Firth, is pretty close to perfection, as you can get.
This production is remarkably faithful to the novel, but I gotta say - I love the little changes and additions. Like Darcy arriving disheveled and having zero prep before facing Elizabeth, and Elizabeth’s mortified “we must leave here at once!”
In my head I'm Mr Darcy, in reality to women I'm probably Mr Collins lol
😆😆
In my head I’m miss Elizabeth , in reality to men I’m probably also Mr Collins
In my head I’m Elizabeth but in real life the frog in the lake! Lol
I'm a woman whose personality is like Mr Darcy, except I'm not rich or good looking. Yeah, I'm screwed.
@@soxnation1000 lol
Manners maketh man.
Indeed.
hahaha.
HAHHAHAHA
Marianne you know what that means?
🤣🤣🤣
"I hope you're not displeased with Pemberley..."
"No not at all."
"And you approve of it?"
"Very much!"
"Oh good because it will very soon be the future home for the rest of your life."
Exactly what my mum said when we watched it together 😂
Lol i was looking for this comment...
The smile on Darcy's face when he says "...therefore more worth the earning." *Swoon*
Darcy: "You are not leaving?"
The urgency in his voice as if to say: 'I haven't stopped thinking about you now here you are. You can't leave.'
“therefore more worth the earning” AHHH BEST LINE EVER I LOVE HIM SM
Best movie version of Pride & Prejudice ever !!! There can be no other Mr. Darcy except Colin Firth. Perfection... the entire cast !!!
Perfection that Colin Firth OMG HANDSOME WOW
Or Matthew Macfayden !!
I love Colin as Mr. Darcy
+ANNIE H. Hear hear. I never thought he could be more attractive than he was in this role, but then I saw the church scene in the Kingsmen. *G*
+claytoaj I agree! I saw Kinsmen....TOTAL hotness.....
ANNIE H. Yes he’s gorgeous. And the Perfect Darcy.
And in Bridget Jones diaries, he plays Darcy yet again! Just in a modern version
OMG his voice, his manners , he is unique, He has such a presence on the screen..... :)
I read this novel when I was 11 years old. This series is my favourite, and I bought it many years ago. I am so glad many people like this series too .
When you have a crush on someone and you don't expect to see them that day but suddenly you do and it makes your whole day so much better...
My favorite part is Darcy running down the stairs, frantically buttoning his waistcoat and coat and charging after Elizabeth like, "Oh, no, my girl, you don't get away that easily!"
That's my fav scene too. Its perfect to see him like that
He's so desperate. I know that feeling; like you'd run down the carriage if you had to.
But mostly I see that seen and I'm terribly envious of his coat! If I had such a coat, and I wanted to chase a lady, I suspect she'd not run very fast or far!
I bet the moment he rounded those huge hedges he was sprinting for his life to get dressed properly😂
Alas, if it were me I would have forgotten to do up my flies, thus ruining everything for ever
"You are not leaving?" (Hurriedly does up flies)
Elizabeth, (horrified and disgusted) "I think we must"
This is hilarious!!! 🤣🤣🤣@@DanBeech-ht7sw
Every second of this series is perfection to the highest standard!
Definitely! A real masterpiece!
😊
I’ve just finished the series and this is the best version ever!
Wonderful version of this story. Pure joy.
But your good opinion is rarely bestowed and therefore more worth the earning :D
Anne-Cathrine gosh this line makes me swoon soooo much even til this day 😍
star Droplet
The timbre of his voice 🙃🙃🙃
What a lovely but really formal compliment to give to Lizzy.
What does he mean by this? Pls
@@jasminedo3507 In modern words they loosely said:
Darcy: "I hope you're not leaving because you don't like the estate/my house"
Elizabeth: "Oh, of course not."
Darcy: "So... that means you like the house?"
Elizabeth: "Of course. It would be hard for anyone to dislike it, don't you think?"
Darcy: "Yes, but since you tend to dislike things often, it means that when you like something, it is even more rewarding. Earning your good opinion is much better than earning other people's good opinion." (Undertones: I care more about your opinion that other people's opinions/you have good taste and I admire it/I'm happy when you approve of me)
Как снять острую эротическую сцену, не раздевая и не унижая героев. Авторам сериала браво!!!
No doubt, Mr. Darcy almost NEVER relaxes like this, even in private. ANd on the rare occasion he does . . . look who shows up to seem him half-undressed!
I can practically hear him in my mind, saying, "Oh, SHIT! It's Lizzie!"
Nick Hentschel What about her mind "OMG even when he's soaking wet he's handsome!!!
+RealDiva1971 Yep. Hubba hubba!
+Nick Hentschel i would have dropped my undergarments at that sight
That shirt is so LONG. Imagine trying to stuff all that yardage into your trousers.
Nick Hentschel: Very true! Which is why he ran inside, put on a coat and rushed back out to make things right. He did good!
I love Lizzies outburst after he leaves like the absolute horror she feels haha
when i was at Uni, we studied Austen, and the tutour showed us this clip. when she turned back to the class, we all had dreamy looks on our faces, and i put my hand up and said "can we see that again, please". she oblidged
Fun Fact: script called for him to be shirtless. Colin kept it classy by insisting he kept it on.
(Also, he's naturally ginger)
Lol, being shirtless would have called for uproar from book fans. Glad they did it. It would have looked so bizzare. And if he were shritless Lizzie just wont stand there and talk to him. She would instantly run away.😂
Colin is a ginger?! What?
@@rumblefish9 yeah that's what he said in interviews
In interview he said the script called for him to be nude. Be still my heart! But the BBC would not allow it. The film makers thought about undershorts, but this was rejected. It was decided it would be nearly fully clothed.
@geria8758 having that conversation in the nip would be hilarious.
"And just as handsome as his portrait, if less formally attired."
You don't say, Mrs Gardener.
"Mr Darcy!"
"Miss Bennett!"
"I had business with my steward. So I rode on ahead."
Ah yes, so I see.
This must be the most abiding female fantasy of all-to meet a proud boy and to make him love us and only us.
True! Only that you do not "make" him to falling in love...he just cannot resist falling for The One 😊
I don't think anybody wants anything to do with a "proud boy" these days!
Not so much proud but a misunderstood guy who actually is all the qualities that women want, when you get to know him -- and he's even richer than his friend, who was actually the one that first stands out as being amazing and having all the girls swoon and chase over him.
A proud boy and a rich one, don't forget.
You certainly dont speak for me.
Обожаю этот сериал!!! Самая лучшая версия из всех!!! Всегда, когда смотрю, отдыхаю душой!...
Абсолютно согласна! Замечательная экранизация! Всегда с удовольствием пересматриваю :)
И я
Always takes my breath away and I feel a little faint! What other reaction can I possibly have to such a fine specimen of a man!!!
LoreneFaith m
Oh yeah the show Runners definitely knew what they were doing with this no inappropriate nudity by modern standards. But it would have been basically equivalent to her singing in his literal underwear from the time period Viewpoint. Which makes her reaction all the better and yet allow them to keep a relatively low age rating on the series.
my emotions and feelings as a teenager have bloomed on this show.
This version of Pride and Prejudice is better than any other. Thank you
No matter how many times I watch this, it makes me giggle like a maniac. Why does this make me swoon way more than most romantic scenes from modern movies??
❤
It's simply
Well done
That's the secret❤
Of its success
Actors done brilliantly..😊
I love this scene, he's so much more himself when he's home :)
I think that was the filmmaker's actual point. Fitz Darcy at home is relaxed and able to enjoy himself a little bit. He's come up early to do business, but takes the time to indulge in something he's probably done since he was a boy. Getting caught out by Lizzy is... unfortunate. (giggle)
At the time, a man of Mr Darcy’s rank didnt show up in public without his cravat tied perfectly. Much less wet.
I love this so much!
Excellent "Pride and Prejudice ". The acting rhe best I have experienced in the telliing of the story.. I think a classic that should be shown for ever. The best of the best..
Perfect Mr Darcy - best P&P ever made. Thank you BBC
and lizzie freaks out just like any other girl in 2015.
Never to be forgotten… three generations of women in my family swooned
colin firth voice is perfection itself.
"Eargasm" 😁
I adore her look at 2:42 "God, please open a hole in the gound to swallow me whole, now!"
It's great acting!!
Hats off to the BBC Studios for bringing us this Magnificent and Outstanding piece of excellent cinematic art and perfect TV mini-series, Thank you!
This will always be the best version
I love his concern over the fact weather or not she approves of Pemberly.its so cute
😂😂😂😂😂 how sweet❤
Colin Firth is my favorite Darcy
RedLotus47 He is the only Darcy there is.
True dat.
Laurence Olivier wasn’t too bad either.
He is a real gentleman
one and only
Watched the entire thing on Christmas Eve. It was meant to serve as mindless entertainment, but I found myself invested before the first episode was even done. Since then I've finished the book and plan to watch it all over again. Someone help me...
It's a trap!!! Run away!!!! It's too late for me!
+I'm a pooping unicorn I own the miniseries and I never get tired of watching it...lol
+Immie B I re-watch it aaaaaaaaaaaaaaall the time. ;)
one of us. one of us. one of us. Welcome to the cult.
+musicalShelley one can not simply stop watching Pride and Prejudice
I like how the music builds and then you here the bushes rustle as Darcy walks through them and then he appears. Beautiful!
I love how in this episode Mrs Gardener is subtley shipping Darcy and Lizzy😂
Лучший фильм, всё что пересняли позже - напрасно!!! Великолепный актёрский состав, игра, музыка!! Обожаю Колина Ферта!!
This movie came out when I was just 5 yrs old. 1995 indeed. But the comments were as fresh as today. I'm glad am not not the only one keeps coming back to these P&P clips.
It came out before I was born.
Colin is just beautiful inside and out, at any age. Also a humanitarian, embodies pure class and elegance.
Oh my Darcy... *sigh* ♡♡♡♡♡
I just adore Colin Firth and I have ever since this show came out all those years ago.
great scene Pride and Prejudice movie ... one of the greatest movies ever ...
Every 2 months this returns to my recommendations and I end up watching the whole thing and blushing..he looked AMAZING here!
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ADAPTATION OF THAT WONDERFUL BOOK "PRIDE AND PREJUDICE"...WITH THE WONDERFUL JENIFER EHLE AND...UAU...THE MOST , MOST COLIN FIRTH!...
I've watched this series about 50 times and this scene about 100 and every single time I squeal , swoon and giggle.
This version of Pride and Prejudice is the one I most like. It is beautifully made so I keep seeing it.
Nobody does Mr Darcy like the good old BBC!!!
Ickle Trixter true very true
My favorite version of Pride & Prejudice, and one of my favorite scenes: Mr. Darcy at a loss for words. His dip in the lake would today be referred to as "taking a cold shower ". Lol, AND got caught, lol, by of all people, the woman who caused his frustration and his need for the cold shower in the first place! It's all so sweetly and awkwardly hilarious!❤
Nothing can beat this version of pride and prejudice
Always loved this scene, it was beautifully acted, a total classic in more ways than one, thank you so much for reminding us of this wonderful series
He's hot. And by the way this THE best Pride and Prejudice version.
He is not just hot, he is absolutely sizzling hot, stunning, gorgeous, sexy, the lot.
Oh yeah
I actually prefer Mathew McFadden's portrayal of Mr Darcy.
Of course. I agree.
Nooo why do you say that?
