My dad owned a DX service station in the late 50s through the 69s. Selling gas was not a money maker but the service bays were where the action was at. Lots of belts, hoses, lights, points, plugs and wires, and you name, it were replaced. I was too little to be anything but in the way, and was more focused on prizes out of the gun ball machine. I remember the work looked hard and you had to have a lot of tools. I often rode in the wrecker that my uncle drove. Your channel soothes my soul.

Paul, the newer BMWs Turbo V8s have many plastic water pipes around the outside of the engine. when they fail, the entire engine-frt suspension has to be removed to access them. its crazy.
i worked for Toyota, 10 years. I had an 85 4x4 EFI. solid axle. Drove that truck for 23 years !!!

I had that happen on a 1990 Toyota MR2. Took a dealer one month to fix it. Two days to take a bunch of stuff off to find the leaking hose, three weeks to get the hose from Toyota, and several days to put it all back together. Nobody thought that hose would ever fail, I guess. ❤️👍👍👍👍👍😎

I had a Nissan. It was a PITA. It was the smallest 4WD pickup they made. It got 16 mpg and my Turbo Diesel got 18.5 doing over the speed limit(70mph at the time) and I drove it 75. It was a one ton 4WD with 4.10 gears. I also had a 4WD Chevy with a 454. It needed a water pump and my wife changed it out in about an hour while I was at work. I got home and she'd hauled thousands of pounds of rip rap with zero problems.

My 2009 needs some tlc as well! got something loose in the front steering or suspension. It needs new tires.
(never going to do coopers again) Im just going to bite the bullet and put some michelins on it) Alignment, new plugs and belts I need to either buff out the headlights or get some new assemblies. Two of the wheels are bubling up between the spokes from salt. I fixed the compass/thermometer rwice but it just keeps burning the contacrs in the board. And it needs a good detail...big time! Otherwise its been a great truck. im going to keep it for the duration.

I have just a 4 banger Taco with front a rear metal bumpers (Due to 2 deer's and a distracted driver), and some Leds. It is all I can afford Thanks to Insurance repairs. I would like to some day to dropp a V6 into it and some custom side rocker steps. You have given me some other ideas too, but until my at home work shop is done, and my welder machines are back. I'll just have to sit on my ideas for now. Thankyou for all the ideas.

Couple things: Lift front of truck with just front lift arms. Remove front wheels. Set rotors on 2x4's on floor so don't have to climb up. #2. Always replace that tube while you're in there. And you need an Air-lift to fill cooling systems. Saves all the pouring & getting air pockets out.

I hope those o-rings hold, sometimes when dealing with water and glycol, EPDM material o-rings are used and they don’t always agree with petroleum products. The more typical BUNA-N are very good with oil so they’re used in hydraulic systems a lot, mobile applications tend to run a bit hotter so they may switch those to Vito’s to cope with the heat better.

They make a funnel that screws on the radiator cap and the funnel pushes into it so you pour antifreeze in and it stays in the funnel and the truck takes what it wants. When your done stick the stopper in the funnel and remove it without spilling barely any.

You should look into a spill-free / no spill coolant funnel. I had a Subaru that used to randomly leave a lot of coolant on the road. Roadside fillups were much easier with the coolant funnel. It has a large reservoir that locks into the radiator and you fill that with coolant, then you can bleed the air out as well. I think mine was about $20 or so, including different radiator cap parts to lock it in place. This is a good low tech solution to filling and bleeding coolant systems that can be used on any vehicle.

Without question you need to get a Lisle 24680 Spill Proof Funnel Kit. These cooling systems need to be burped, and a funnel like this allows you to bleed off all air easily. You’ll need to literally massage the coolant hoses. Suggest you watch a video on this mate. Check it out, I wouldn’t be without one. Comes with all the adapters you’ll need to attach to most rads.

6 psi?? Perfect! Kinda. I have a 1992 Comanche running 13 psi in the front and 10 psi in the rear. This is ride heigth, normal pavement driving. I check the wear with a tire depth gauge and maintain the above mentioned pressure.
I figured out the pressure by means of scientific study.
In my little town we have a new car wash with the purtiest concrete slab you ever laid your eyes on. After someone washes their car/truck I drive mine in only enough to get the front tires wet all the way around then drive back out. I measure the sholuder to shoulder width of the tire and compare that to the wet print on the concrete. Then I lower pressure from what the tire sidewall says by 20 lbs. and run the tires into wet again. As I drive out I take a slightly different line to acquire a new wet track and measure the footprint on the slab. I continue this process until I get within a 1/4 inch.
Then I repeat the process for the rear tires by backing into the wet slab in the wash stall. The rear tires on a truck will always be a lower pressure because the weight is lighter than the front that support the engine, winch, and so on.
To make sure my scientific eyechrometer pressures are correct I periodically measure the tires with a depth gauge on the inside shoulder, the tire center, and the outside shoulder. They should measure the same. If the center measures less than the shoulders then I know the pressure must be reduced by 3-5 lbs. If the shoulders measure less than I know to raise the pressure 3-5 lbs and monitor with the depth gauge.
I repeat the process with every new set of tires whether the same tire or a different tire (brand, taller, wider, and so on. If I replace tires with the same exact tire I have already done the home work for that tire brand and size. This entails keeping accurate records. Keep in mind this is for on-road work. Offroad I will get down to about 6 psi.
Additionally, I tend to use a rim 2 inches narrower to prevent popping a bead offroad. For example, with a tire ten inches wide I run an 8 inch rim. This serves very well for me offroad without popping a bead.
"I yield back the soap box..."

So now with 4 hours of labor ( 200.00) plus 9.00 parts = a bill showing 9.00 labor and a parts cost of 200.00. That makes the bill and shock of it easier to handle.

I'm sure you are aware but they make a special funnel specifically for adding coolant and burping the system at the same time. Really made my last water pump swap much easier. :)

Paul you should look into a top side creepers since a lot of what you work on are large trucks that require a ladder to reach the back area of the engine compartment. They are a lot more comfortable and probably safer than a step ladder. Plus a lot of them have a tool tray to make life easy. You are right looks better with the 37s

That crossed my mind as well. The old back takes quite the beating and after so many years of it gadgets like that become life savers!

@@dalegnodle yes they do. We all abused our bodies when we were younger. No that we’re older we are paying the price and the little things help more than most could imagine.

It's good that the Taco got some love and new wheels. You fixed the o Ring/ gasket issue after removing half the engine! Next is the one ton axles and don't wait like Matt did until you break something! Good job!
