I’m a 61 year old car dealer, they say that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, well that just isn’t true!
After a very frustrating week getting it wrong and getting it wrong again, watching countless videos where people assume that you know what you’re doing and don’t need to learn anything anyway, I finally came across your video, I followed it to the letter and I’m a happy man.
I now won’t ever have to rely on unreliable people that continuously let me down, I’m going to do it all myself in future.
Thank you so much

Really appreciate the feedback Ray and glad my channel has served a purpose! All the best. Martin
great video putting out some great content for smart repairers, keep the videos coming
Thankyou very much 🙏 I will
Awesome job mate.
Thanks Ben. Thanks for watching
love the video, gr8 stuff, liked and subbed. Would love to this sort of job!
Thanks man
Spot on mate excellent video
Thanks for watching
Hello new to your channel I love the way you do smart repares look at forward seeing more of your videos
Cheers pal
Another mint video mate.
Thanks pal
Just a great job Brother, keep on keeping on...
Thanks, will do!
You do some awesome work 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for watching
Well done
Thanks Sam
Superb video. Wanted a detailed overview of what's involved and that's exactly what I got. Getting asked a lot to provide this service as well as stone chips so going to look into it further. next step, a couple of different coloured panels from the scrap yard to practice on.👍
Great. Glad it's been of use to you and good luck 👍🏻
Subbed amazing!!
Thanks
Another great video, thanks CVR. Are you throwing your curing lamps on (baking) right after you clear or waiting for the clear (lacquer) to flash first?
I usually have the lamps near to keep it warm as soon as clear is applied. I dont go straight to full baking distance tho for around 5mins or more
Nice 👍
Thanks
Awesome
Excellent work!
Wish you were working in Edinburgh!
Thanks mate, Edinburgh is a bit of a drive 😅👍🏼
Due to have work done on my gunmetal grey Qashqai in a couple of weeks by ChipsAway. The end result in your video is great, but all that sanding caused a look through my fingers moment, ouch! Lol
Think I'll go away for 4 hours whilst the scratch is repaired, can't bare to watch my paintwork sanded!
Got to look worse before it looks better in this game mate
Great this video! I'm new to spot repair and your videos are great for continuing to learn... Did you apply a bit of blender thinner to the checkout line before removing your masking?
Glad the vids are helping mate. I actually have an opinion on this but I may be wrong. Personally I don't use any blender on the 'line' when I backmask it with tape.
I've tried some of that special foam edge tape and I think personally that does benefit from some dusting over it. Always keep base away from the line as much as possible and remove the tape immediately after clearing 👍🏻
Nice good job friend.. 😊🙏👍💪
Thankyou mate
Thankyou mate
Another excellent vid. When you go over the panel with grey scotchbrite do you use washing up liquid and water or are you using something like Farecla g Matt? Thanks
I use some wash and wax mate and grey scotch
@@cvrpov really wash and wax before the paint, noo just use fairy liquid and on the swage line why would you not use a fade out thinner to be sure you leave no visible trace? not knocking your work it turned out nice.
Like the videos mate nice to see a smart repairs what clear do you use on wheels and normal repairs. Andy
Hi Andy. I use diamond clear from express paints.. 5min hardener this time of year
Very productive an efficient 💯💯💯
Nice
Thx
Always amazed at how clean your work is. How did you manage without the need for fade out/blending thinners?
Hi mate. There is some flatting to do at the end most jobs. It just finishes it off nice. I just went off the swage line mate I didnt blend it 👍🏼
Hi, great videos, what clear coat do you use for your smart repairs?
Thanks
I use diamond clear from express paints
Hi, grsat work. I have the bottom of a door to clearcoat up to a swageline/Bendline in the panel. Do i not need to run a little blend spray along the swageline if i do it like this? Or do i just polish cut the new and old clear coat together? Thanks
cool 👍
👍🏼
Nice video mate! Just wondered would you paint filler cap on a more difficult colour or just depend on how good your scheme is?
And do you use 3000 trizact after 1500 wet and dry?
Hi. Yes I would consider painting the filler cap on a more difficult colour! Every scheme has its pros and cons, mine is no different!
I do sometimes use 3000 after yes. The more sanding stages the better the finish definitely!
Excellent work an perfect repair the best an professional way to do the repairs all transparent to uneducated customers, i would be charging minimum £60 to £90 labour per hour, insurance standard keep it up
I'm supposed to take my Jeep Jl back to my dealer soon to have rock chips on my rear fenders and doors touched up by a mobile painter. The thing is she is only available on Thursday's and the temperature outside has been around 50ish degrees and under and their has been humidity in the 70s and up on every Thursday this far. Are mobile painter able to paint well in these conditions? I'm worried that if I take it to get painted in these conditions that the finish product won't turn out well. Any input from a professional would be awesome. Thank you for your time and assistance.
I paint in all sorts of conditions. However in the uk they are not that extreme.
Good job . what kind of set up would be in the van ie generator & compressor thanks
Compressor but I dont carry a genny. Paint mixing scheme, laptop etc..consumables
Awsome
thanks for watching
Good Job and a great blend. Do you every use a rattle can of speed blender?
I have some in an lph 80 spray gun at all times
Nice. Can you say something about your equipment? You know hvlp paint gun, what big chair compressor you use?
I will do some content on those yes
@@cvrpov thanks
You use full size guns? I have a SATA minijet but it's a little bit difficult to get even base coat with the fan size.. are you running all the equipment on a generator?
I use small guns. The devilbiss gti pro lite is like a full size gun though. Its a 1.3 tip
Great video! Do you think 1 coat of lacquer over the whole repair is enough? I’d be so paranoid when polishing that blend.
I usually do 1 coat over the base area then a full coat over the whole area.
Nice workmanship. What kind of spray gun do you use?
I use a few different guns. Iwata lph80 1.2 tip for basecoat and devilbiss sri pro lite 1.3 tip for lacquer is my go to setup
I'm currently using a farécla
360 compound system bur am now looking at the 3m perfect it line. Can you recommend a decent finishing polish and head?
There are many mare. Megs, menzerna, Koch, scholl. I dont rate the 3m yellow or blue top tho
Scratch had to be sprayed no fault there. I like how you take the time to polish back the surrounding area before repairing and spraying, a somewhat unnecessary step but it shows you care a lot. Yeah, can see you know what your doing, fine somewhere that will appreciate those skills to keep you off the side of the roads~
thanks for watching. the polishing prior to scotching can help decontaminate and also buff any deepish marks and reveal the true damage. not always necessary i agree! I will maybe get a unit one day but im mobile and thats my biggest selling point people love the convenience
@@cvrpov Ahh another bodyshopper thinking its their way or no way...good job pal
Is any overspray that might stick to the non-base coat painting area be easy to remove ? Does folding the tape to apply around the surrounding area effective to minimize paint tape lines on the finished area?
Hi mate amazing job. what size compressor do you use & which gun?
I use 90 litre comp and have various guns from 1.0 to 1.3 for base and lacquer
Do you use a waxless polish? Also I see that you are using a pneumatic sander, do you use this for polishing too? If so what RPM? Because I hear that people have been burning paint with too high of a RPM...
Always use a bodyshop safe polish. I use air sanders and polishers (them pistol ones), not sure what rpm but it takes alot to burn the paint with one
Back in the 1980s I was Going round various garages up here in Scotland doing what's now called Smart repairs. As far as I know I was the only person to offer this service in Scotland as no one had heard of this paint service on a mobile basis before and as I was a time served spray painter to trade I could do most jobs including small dents, but not all of them, All the garages liked what I was offering as it was mainly to the sales side of the industry but I could also do some private work as well. I packed the business after quite a few years mainly because of the never ending Health and safety rules and regs as I was always given a space in the workshop to work on the cars. also because I was burning myself out with driving 100s of miles per week and could not keep up with demand [ that was before mobile phones so that would have been a nightmare]. It was a nice earning business if you knew what you were doing but I have heard of people being attracted to the job on a franchise basis that have no knowledge of the painting industry and receive a few months training and then sent out to make a living so I imagine there will be a lot of failures unless the repairs are kept really simple and not on the main areas of the car panels.
That was probably quite revolutionary in those times. Mobile paint repair is now very much common place within the industry now.
@@cvrpov Thanks for the reply. By the way you did a nice job on the car. I noticed that a lot of smart repairs are done outside and sometimes under a canopy, you would never manage that with some of the weather we have up here in Scotland. Good luck with the work.
What guns do you use and what pressure when spraying?
What was the orange peel like as I can't see any in the final finish. Great job 👌
hi mate. i use an lph 80 1.2 for base and an sri pro lite for clear. occasionally get the old sri out too.
@@cvrpov okay thanks. I'm just starting out in smart repairs but not doing any dents. Does having a good gun really help? What technique's would you advise on reducing orange peel?
@@alexbryant333 Hi, having a good gun will save you loads of time with sanding back the clear coat. If you use a good gun (say Devibiss GTI Pro of full fluid and full fan, 2 bar) and you know how to handle your gun and spray around body lines, you will have far less orange peel to cut when you are done painting.
I want to ask a question please kindly help. Can I spray normal thinner to fade out edges or the lines and then wet sand and polish or once I apply the thinner in the fade out or body line area I don't have to wet sand it but straight up polish
I know people that use normal thinners with good success
You seemed to polish the clear coat very soon after spraying it. Doesn’t it take about 24-48 hours for clear coat to fully harden to the point where it will polish without damaging it?
Most modern lacquers dry in a few hours now in the right conditions. This one dried in 15 mins under infra red
Great video again! How did you deal with your blend line?
Remove tape immediately after lacquer and polish carefully with buffer once baked and cooled
@@cvrpov no flatting on the edge?
offending job my friend. I'm curious what types of paint guns you used in compressor
I use some devilbiss guns and some iwata
Hey, how do you power up your compressor if you're not using a generator ?
Hi. I use the customers electric
Hye. So you just need to spray the basecoat at the damages area?. Or a whole panel?.
Just to cover ur primer and blend the area
Worked in a bodyshop for years never seen buffing before painting with reactions etc?
I go through phases of not doing this and doing this...have to say though, I've never had a problem
@@cvrpov
Great work tho mate 👍😉
I was always told to always keep it in the stages which buffing is last spreading all the compound before paint....
How you dont have a line of the masking tape when you sprayed clear coat? You sand a line and polished?
Use backmasking technique by rolling it back..remove immediately after lacquer and polish area when dry
Did you use thinner on that edge and if so did you wet sand?
I dont usually use thinners or blend on the blend line/swage line no
Is there anywhere in the North West that does a course on this that you’d recommend? Thank you.
Not sure mate. I have plenty of content and more coming in 2023
So are you using fast reducer for base and fast harder for clearcoat?
Fast clear
Hey mate where you based I need a job doing? Do you cover Birmingham??
No sorry pal
Great video!! what school can i go to learn this?
I will be doing plenty of online content for learning 👍🏼
I also have a passion for this just trying to set up my van but unsure of what I need
@@robw321 Basic equipment: minimum of two guns for base and clear coat, a compressor, baking lamps, a machine polisher, a generator (if you don't always want to need the customer's socket), masking paper, masking sheets, auto cleaning towels, dual action sanders and sanding papers, body fillers.
There are certainly other things but these I consider the minimum set of equipment.
I have pvc jobs to do but wanting a set up I have a ford transit connect high van
Yeah go for it
Looked like a great finish but I’m concerned by all the over spray ! My van is going in to chips away soon for a spot repair, I’m really concerned this will happen
I would of usually bagged the whole car off which I recommend he does too. I way trying to keep it diy
What’s your working area ? If your close enough I’d rather get you to do my repair
How much did you charge the customer for this job? Just want to get a general idea because I need to get my car done as well. Thanks.
£200.00 for this repair
@@cvrpovworth every penny.
Do you carry out work in Stratford upon Avon?
No sorry John
i get nervous watching this but nice work mate.
Haha why? Thanks
CVR POV because i know if it was me doing it, id 'f'' it up 😬
Top dog
👊🏻
The amount of overspray on that rear door!! When you lacquered. That’s why I sheet the whole car
I usually do the same. Concentrating more on the video. The overspray got claybared away and the whole side was being buffed for hedge scratches anyway 👍🏼
When you find out the colour of the paint, how do you go about matching it?
See my colour matching video 👍🏼👍🏼
Hi mate what size compressor do you use
90ltr 3hp belt driven abac
Would a 50lt compressor 9.6cfm be enough to paint a front bumper or should I get one similar to yours
Would a 50lt compressor 9.6cfm be enough to paint a front bumper or should I get one similar to yours
Video is nice to watch, but lacks much detaip... how about sharing technical specifics like what gun, which nozzle you chose, was this a single stage paint? I'd rather have more info and less soundtrack. The work looks great, especially for outdoors.
Hi mate. This was just a quick easily digestible video for people to watch without too much detail. I have done other videos way more in depth like "full smart repair" video with the red suzuki. Go check it out 👌🏼
What compressor do you use
90 litre 3hp belt driven abac
Do you charge extra for the overspray?
no its free of charge
@@cvrpov
I do the same thing, so I’m gonna start charging lol. Keep up the good work I love watching it.
Ok so what happens if the entire car is covered in ceramic coating. How would you smart repair without destroying the ceramic?
Simple answer is the ceramic will need removing from any panel where paint is being applied. Ceramic needs a minimum of 2000 grit wet paper to thoroughly sand the whole panel which requires painting.. or area that needs painting (if a smart repair on a bumper etc).
.
The refinished panel should be left for several wheels before re application of a ceramic coating
Did u get clear coat off glass ?
Yes
Do i need to sand the whole panel
Just the area you are lacquering
Mavilhoso. Is better this kind of video, descripting step by step than telling
Thanks. Some people prefer the speaking but I will do both
Just curious how much a repair like this would cost?
Around 150 for a scratch with no dint/filler work around here
How much for a job like this
Prices can range between 100 and 300 pounds depending on geographical factors and different companies
How much would repair cost?
Approx 120-150
@@cvrpov wow that is great value!!
👌👌👌👌👌👌🙏🙏🙏
Do you still do this?
Not anymore no sorry
How much can this cost
120 - 200 area dependant i should imagine
How not to create line in the masking area
In your opinion
I am asking for tips on how not to create hard lines
Welcome to overspray city, a detailers worst nightmare.
Good job the whole side was being mopped by a detailer (me😅)
@@cvrpov Not just the side though is it, its the roof, the bonnet, the glass, etc
Let the man work. He most likely cleans up after himself. Show us your work
Ahh another expert detailer! Unskilled workers telling skilled qualified tradesmen how to do their job!
Making a switch of career into smart repairs soon after 15 years of painting and decorating. This video was exactly what i was looking for to give me some info. Did a panel beating apprenticeship 25 years ago but will take a while to get back in the swing of it. Luckily I have a friend who does smart repairs already so will be shadowing him for a while first. Thanks for the video 👍
I’m glad that’s not my car , if the whole car is not covered up then you’ll get over spray especially outside in U.K. weather
I'm glad its not your car aswll Imran.. else that would of meant my regular customer must of stolen it from you and said it was theres 😬🙉
@@cvrpov my point is I wouldn’t want anyone working on my car unless it’s all masked up , your going to get overspray especially painting outside , I’m not saying I can do a better Job than you bcuz I can’t yet as I’ve only practised on a panel once so far and will learn more from videos and practise more once the weather gets better
@@ImranAli-rp4kd yep fair one pal
Don't try this at home cos you will spend the rest of the day trying to remove the overspray from the rest of the car. Tip, buy a roll of plastic sheet and cover the whole car, will take about 4 minutes and cost about £2.
👍🏼
Alot of overspray when clearcoating.. drop the pressure and adjust the gun. That way the overspray dont hit the car
After 7 years of spraying I think this suits me and my environment.. which constantly changes
@@cvrpov Sure thing, was not ment to be negative, great result though
I know mate, just saying 👍🏼. Ive played with lower pressures. Thanks for watching
Overspray everywere. More work taking off
Covered this
dein primer ist 1 kprodukt oder 2 k produkt. kann man auch 1k primer / füller spraydose nahmen..sauber arbeit bro
It was a quick repair with 1k primer. I usually use 2k primer 👍🏼
G3N1U5👀😎👍👍
👊🏻👊🏻
Looking good. But i bet its not tha easy as it looks.
Thanks for watching
Seems like you coulda sanded the clear coat and called it a day .
No chance, but thanks for the comments
That ain’t a colour match, too light. Filler cap really shows it up.
👍🏼👍🏼
Well without doing a blend you had no chance. I would have done the filler cap too.
Omfg not worried about the overspray on the rest of the car then 🤦 absolute cowboy
Yeehaw
I bet you wished you covered the car just for the sake of not having to reply to every comment haha.
Top 5 regrets in life (36 yrs) and that's up there pal
That car must be covered in laquer overspray. You really need at least some kind of wind proof tent and a full plastic body bag to prevent overspray. I have no issues with your paint/refinish procedures but this overspray floats and sticks and can be awful to get off.
Already covered this but ill cover it again (unlike the car 😅) I usually bag the whole car up. This was a quick job and I was concentrating more on making a good video. The guys car (whos actually a mate) had the whole side buffed for hedge scratches anyway and the rest I did a quick clay bar 👍🏼. Its actually quite difficult to do your job and consciously make a half decent video at the same time. Thanks for watching.
@@cvrpov
Thanks for the explanation. 👍
Wtf😳 you can just touch up with some clearcoate sanding and polishing mate, that wasn’t scratch for that big job to charge the customer crazy money…
Whole car from over spray.... bro cover all the car... you are not PROFI!
This has been covered
This video is complete and utter madness ! It was a tiny scratch!!! The guys polished a panel to then sand it down ??? Whys p180 been used ? High build primer 😂😂 why the fuel flap thats right next to the painted area been left ? Its a differnet shade !?! No one else noticing the straight line where the paint meets the old paint on the swedge line . Also to have to flatten a tiny job like that - nothing smart about this ! Bmw qualified, smart repairers opinion - every painter eill find faults with another painters job . Also , all these people leaving jobs to become smart repairers!?! It took me 4 yesrs at college to be qualified, then 10 years in garages, 4 years as a mobile insurance repairer! Your repairing peoples pride and joy , do you know about colour matching amd the various shades ? What do you do if your job goes wrong but you have 5 other jobs to do ? Great money , if your willing to graft and can do the job - you wont last a week , if cannot paint !!!! All the best for givkng it a go though
Amateur!🙈
Thankyou, mr helmet
@CVR POV man ppl need to get a life always nagging at you when your trying to give us tips and helping us to do this at home, mate you did an excellent job👍
