I was lucky enough to watch Jonah Lomu play club rugby for Weymouth when I was 9 years old, I stood on the grass bank that day with 100 or so others and witnessed a teenage Lomu run over 5 grown men on the way to the try line. We all new he was special, I'm glad my Dad asked me to come watch this guy called Lomu play, I hope one day his kids will watch this and know they came from a champion. RIP brother

I met Johan around 2000 in Porirua Police College.Him,Christain Cullen,Tana Umaga ,Ilama Iramare pactising on the too field.Even spoke with the big guy.Man im no one to him and he couldnt have been nicer.RIP big fella....Sidenote;I noticed everytime the NZ national anthem played Jonah was often the only All Black with his hand over his heart. To this day I havnt seen a more humble, respectful or grateful resipiant of the Black jersey than thd all mighty JONAH LOMU.

Majestic, mercurial, magnificent, a demigod. My lifetime has been blessed by having the honour to see the greatest ever. First saw him in HK sevens in 1994 and was in awe. Never seen anything like him before, during, or after. Simply the greatest ever, without equal. Heaven has the greatest angel.

Funny you say that because I'd guesstimate that at least 90% of NFL players are just as athletic if not more than him. There's a reason they get paid the big bucks and this guy is stuck dumpstering pseudoathletes. Most the guys this beast is playing against look like intramural players tbh lol

For those who say the tacklers back then were garbage, your not taking into account the sheer speed that Jonah is running at. You only have to watch Vaea Fifita burning modern players to see that size and incredible speed combined makes "modern" players look just like these "past" players.

0:54 A rugby field is 70 meters wide. Jonah has thrown this pass from 5 meters from the sideline, and it's been caught at least 10 meters past the middle point. That's a 40-45 meter throw, with a rugby ball.
Back when he was playing I had heard rumours that Lomu could throw the ball over the goalposts from the halfway line. I guess that was with a running start.

0:55 Heheh. Jonah's cross-field kicking game wasn't so good, so he just passed the ball ... across the field...
2:44 World Cup 1995 in South Africa. Jonah did all the hard work in this movement and Kronfeld took the ball off him to claim the try. The trouble was that Lomu landed with his left arm outstretched and a Welsh player on top of him. Injured shoulder right there.
4:38 World Cup 1995. All Blacks/England semi-final. The England number 14 was Tony Underwood: a young man with a very high opinion of his abilities, who was not impressed by Jonah Lomu in the run-up to the semi-final. He spent the week before the game telling any reporter who wanted to listen that he was going to show Lomu what a real wing is like. My private thought was that Underwood was going to find that difficult when he was lying flat on his face, watching Lomu run away from him, which is exactly how it happened. Lomu scored two tries down Underwood's wing and Tony could do nothing about it ( 5:47 and 6:40 ).
