If you block to create running lanes, there is an obstruction penalty, so consequently you have to have great ball movement to get great runs with no blockers......... which is why Jonah was so special, he didnt need it... 4. the line of scrimmage is not a set point where someone is tackled, it starts with whoever has the ball, and everyone has to be behind whoever has the ball, or its offsides.. 5. WHEN there is a penalty, you either have a scrum, or a field goal if the team not committing the penalty is close enough... 6. When you get tackled, you must release the ball or you will get a penalty.....So even if you run 80 yards, you still loose the ball if guys aren't around you... Which means the objective if you cant score is to wait fir your teammates.... Whenever there is a tackle, the ball carriers teammates clean out the defenders who can pick the ball up before the offensive picks up the ball up to advance it..... 7. A tri(touchdown) is 5 points. Extra point is 2
If you look at the stats of the other players you will probably find they were NOT little guys. They would have been 5'11-6'2" and 195-220lbs. He was just REALLY big Best rugby player.

Lomu is a goat. Theres a small english black man called robinson who was the same era as lomu. Size wise everything is bigger in the current era. A winger which is 11 and 14 are the fast paced powerful players but their no necessarily that big. Jonah was played as a centre for long time as he was big and powerful they realised he could be a winger as he was so fast. He was really the first big winger. Id be surpised to see anyone less than 6ft1 on the pitch nowadays but its a bit slower than the 90s which was really the golden era of rugby. Im a big guy 6'5 or so and fast so i was played quite a lot at school. Back in the days there was no stopping full contact rugby from the age of 5. I used to come up against matt bannerhan often but played a more technical game with less tackles and more nimbleness. Im now over 110kg but still thin. Unfortunately rugby stops at about 30 due to injuries but cte is actually lower than american football due to rules and specifically tackles. Most of these people have a full time job and only play at the weekend.
i suppose the easiest way to explain rugby is like basketball BUT a) you don't have to bounce the ball when you run with it b) you cannot pass the ball forward c) to defend you can tackle the ball-carrier d) when you get tackled its a free-for-all to win the ball on the ground!

Jonah happened to be 118 kg of speed and aggression. Their are bigger men than Jonah on the field like the 4 & 5 who average 198-205 cm and around 118 kg and 3 & 4 are even heavier. The size difference thing, had more to do with the end of apartheid than it did with Jonah. Jonah was a factor for sure, but, the main reason for why players are so big today is, South Africans seem to just breed monsters. Before the end of Apartheid any sized man could take his position except in the second row and lock and front row, where it is pretty much a pre-requisite for the back rowers to be tall and the front rowers to be stocky, so long as they are strong, they train hard and they have the adequate skills to make the team, that was probably all you needed. Then, came the end of Apartheid, and at first it wasn't a whole lot different, but, the South Africans were frustrated with their lack of instant success after apartheid, (with the springboks being THE team back in the 60's) and they must have felt that one way to address it was start drafting some of their big men. They saw the success that Jonah was having, and they must have thought 'well one thing we have is a surfeit of monsters, so lets make use of that. So, in the 2000's you started to see the South Africans with big rangy men right across the whole field, and of course other countries needed to counter that. But yeah, I first noticed the team where the the big rangy guy was the rule rather than the exception first emanated out of South Africa.

He was offered a huge NFL contract and turned it down because of his love of Rugby which is fast paced no downs, and has more flexible and creative play. He had a hard childhood. Stabbed 3 times. Post op infections contributed to the future kidney problems that caused his premature death at 40

I'd say there's a couple of international rugby sides that he never scored against simply due to the fact the ABs hadn't played them throughout his era.

Perhaps a major reason why SA lost a lot of those games was probably because they sacrificed too many players to .mark the big fella.

Jonah is the master of initiating the contact even with several players around him. A wing is the man that eventually gets the ball in space and his job is the be faster than the rest of the team. Jonah happened to be 118 kg of speed and aggression. Their are bigger men than Jonah on the field like the 4 & 5 who average 198-205 cm and around 118 kg and 3 & 4 are even heavier. Facing Jonah requires Jesus. Bloody legend. Gone home to Jesus now. Watch women's rugby brother, it's brutal too.

The size difference thing, had more to do with the end of apartheid than it did with Jonah. Jonah was a factor for sure, but, the main reason for why players are so big today is, South Africans seem to just breed monsters. Before the end of Apartheid any sized man could take his position except in the second row and lock and front row, where it is pretty much a pre-requisite for the back rowers to be tall and the front rowers to be stocky, so long as they are strong, they train hard and they have the adequate skills to make the team, that was probably all you needed. Then, came the end of Apartheid, and at first it wasn't a whole lot different, but, the South Africans were frustrated with their lack of instant success after apartheid, (with the springboks being THE team back in the 60's) and they must have felt that one way to address it was start drafting some of their big men. They saw the success that Jonah was having, and they must have thought 'well one thing we have is a surfeit of monsters, so lets make use of that. So, in the 2000's you started to see the South Africans with big rangy men right across the whole field, and of course other countries needed to counter that. But yeah, I first noticed the team where the the big rangy guy was the rule rather than the exception first emanated out of South Africa.

I am not aware of any Hawaiians playing at top level In Rugby. Many Pacifica players do well in this sport, especially Fijians, Samoans and Tongans.
