Jonah was my childhood hero and I got to meet him once. He was humble and I wish I still had that photo. I remember every game he played I wanted to watch because I knew as soon as he got the ball he would do something special. I could write forever about Jonah. Rip king

Born: 12th May, 1975, Pukekohe, Auckland. (Parents are Tongans)
Slept eternal: 18th April, 2015, Auckland.
Seen him play lots in wellington at the stadium bro back when he played for my Hurricanes and Lions.
Our regional colours are Black and yellow. and he was just unstoppable. Yet, off the field, he was a giant bear bro. Believe that or not. Such was his humility and ferocity. He tamed both bro. Now he's the GOAT in rugby. Even to this day in 2022.

This guy was a gentleman off the field. A real humble, gentle giant of a man and the GOAT IMO. He mostly played at 80% fitness levels due to kidney disease and he destroyed defences and elite athletes with his speed, balance, co-ordination and a really excellent reading of the game. He died of a heart attack due to his kidney problems in 2015. The ultimate athlete. 6 foot 5, 262 Ibs and ran 100 metres in 10.8 seconds. Imagine that hulk of a man running at you!! Incredible competitor; he helped increase the profile of the game of rugby union, which ultimately lead to the professional era of rugby. RIP big guy!!

    @anitaherbert1037 Год назад +3

Had a tough childhood. Stabbed 3 times. Reputably a true gentleman off the pitch and warrior on. Many of the clips are after the onset of his kidney problems. I always assumed his later kidney problems were caused by long term weakness caused by infections after the stabbings . He was offered a major NFL contract and turned down the money for love of rugby and the fast paced creative flexible play. Remember there are no downs in Rugby. The stamina needed is off the charts. Anybody who has seen a team play in rain know they come off the pitch looking like scene from platoon. There is no game compares for grit commitment or team awareness. It's the creative and fast paced passing that most separates rugby from NFL

  • @stuartcollins82

One of the things with Jonah was, he created massive holes in defences by drawing players. When it takes 3-4 guys to bring him down, suddenly there's half a defence missing for the rest of the team to run through.

A great reaction to a God among men. Not only was he one of the greatest players of all time, but he helped charities & local communities every chance he got. Turned down playing in the NFL because he wanted to stay at home & help others. His funeral Haka was a moment that had men around the world crying like babies & I highly recommend watching it. Just remember. NEVER pause during a Haka. wait until the end. Think it something akin to a national anthem (but with so much more history & meaning).
But I will never say RIP to the Great Lord of the wings. Not because I mean him any disrespect. But because Gods NEVER DIE!

  • @kimhunter6733

In a rugby tackle there is a term called cheek to cheek. That's your face cheek against their butt cheek. Since you can't go for the head, and since the defender usually does not have a huge amount of momentum going into the tackle; the best way to take someone down is by taking them low and knocking off their centre of gravity. If you got Jonah lomu coming at you.... low is the only option.

I'm sure Jonah ran the 100 at 10.9, how fast would he of been if he trained from a young age for the track? We'll never know, but l believe he would of cracked 10. He would of been good at longer distances as well and as the presenters said he had gears. Good video mate & I liked how you let it run & commented at the appropriate time, well done 👍

Jonah Lomu was like, if you took the pace of an elite WR, the moves and elusivity of an elite KR, the full explosivity and moveset of an elite power HB (especially full on Beast Mode Marshawn Lynch type runners), the hitmaking ability of an elite LB, and put it all in the body size and shape of an elite edge rusher.

All blacks = the most winning sports team in history....any sport.
Lomu was 6ft 5", 120kg and ran the 100m in 10.8 seconds. Plus he was agile and could hit like a train. A total gentleman off the field as well.
I got to see him play for Auckland vs Queensland in a pre-season game at Ballymore in the late 90's. Watching them warm up, Jonah looked enormous on the wing, training with the backs. Then he went over and stood beside the forwards and he was taller than almost all of them too.... That night he was up against Ben Tune - a very good, 100kg test winger for Australia. Tune was just a speed bump all night long. Jonah terrorised him....not for the first or last time.
People say he was the first rugby global superstar...but has there ever really been another? Maybe Dan Carter or Richie McCaw rank higher in history. But before Jonah, wingers were always small, zippy players...he changed the game. Coming up against someone that big, that agile, that fast, you have to change or you are going to lose by 50.
NFL teams were lining up for this guy early in his career, but every NZ kid wants to be an All Black...probably why they have been so good for so long.
By the way, when you said "I don't know what team that guy played for, but that guy had wheels:....that was actually Jonah, turning around and catching England winger Tony Underwood in about 10m at the World cup. All the talk before the game was that Underwood was supposed to be too fast for Lomu...nope!

Can you imagine the space he would create IF or WHEN he gets tackled there's like 2 guys on his back, another two on either side of his shoulders, one on his hip, one each on both thighs all while dragging 2 more around his ankles & one last guy holding on to his other two team mates to try & drag him down.
That's damn near the whole team out of line.. so that's a quick play out to the middle or edge & it's a try 85% of the time (did the math).

Jonah changed rugby. Backline players had to become stronger and heavier, front line players had to become faster, somewhat leaner.

Please React to Jonah Lomu vs South African rugby team 1995 world cup.... It was said that nobody could stop Jonah in the build up to the world cup but they did not take into consideration how my county's team would demolish this great player lmao.
