Whoever thought it was acceptable to place the timing chain on the flywheel end of an engine want's kicking in the balls. I'll be honest, I didn't know these were set up like this, I've seen it on more exotic Audis but on a 2l Landy, come on man. The tooling, time and effort needed for a service item is down right obscene. Great job lads, you made easy work of a hellish job, bloody box off to service a timing set man, grrrrr.
My thanks to EVERYONE involved in this video. Simply a superb tutorial demonstrated by an expert in the subject. Knowledge and skill are two wonderful attributes to work like this.
Thanks for putting this video up Rob. I am sure this lad is going to get a lot of work on the back of this video and well deserved to. He has a talent for teaching am sure he will do well.
I don't watch terrestrial TV, in fact I don't even have an aerial, mainly watch movies on streaming services, salvage rebuilds is the only "series" that I watch and look forward too, my coronation Street if you will, keep up the great work lads, thank you for the entertainment
Awesome 👌 These Engineers know their onions inside out 👌👍👏 and what a lovely team, so patient and super cool 😎 to record this video and for S.R.UK to share it with us. Awesome 👌 and thanks 😊 👊👊👊👊👊🦾💪 ✌❤🍀
We have a Jaguar in for turbo replacement, however the sump has to be removed for cleaning which involves subframe, rack etc dropping. Now pieces of iron casting found in sump. Another has had timing chain failure at speed . For all the Engine designers out there , have a look at old BMW and Mercedes duplex timing chains and guides...That's how you do timing chains. Our local Jag dealership has several vehicles with varying levels of damage tucked round the back awaiting work. Some have very little mileage on them. With the millions of miles of testing how did it come to this ? Carpet the under swept ...? Is it the toolings already been made let the customer do the development work.
Nice to hear from josh the procedures for doing the job. Unfortunately a common problem on these land rovers with the timing chains it’s mad that they use plastic tensioners like that surely they should have used something more substantial
That engine is definitely not designed for ease of repair. Great work by Josh ,I found through out my life technicians tend to be patient and willing to share their knowledge with others.
Thank you Rob & Chris for posting this great video on SR-uk You Tube Channel. Josh, you are a very highly skilled tech.. I trained as a 'mechanic' in the 1960's and there was nothing as complex and involved as what you have just showed here. I left the trade before ECU's came along, but have tried to keep up to date since watching You Tube content creators. Many thanks for that highly detailed look at the replacing of those timing chains .. I also watched your EV video which I understood quite well as I used to, as a hobby, repair valve amplifiers that ticked over at 400 VDC +. Your fault finding was faultless and gave an insight into the surprising complexity of EV's (which I think are an abomination BTW 😅).
Thank you for taking the time to film and document this job, I learnt a lot. I have ordered one of those gasket scrapers on based your recommendation. .
The Opel Astra K model with the B16 motor has the same issue, the chain is placed on the flywheel side, a lot of work and money to change the timing kit. Bad designer and not customer friendly.
josh is a brave man tackling all those mechanical gubbings, now i would just say no not today and go back in for tea and bisquits..but he knows his stuff.
I was lost in the first 30 seconds I have no idea what’s going on ..BUT … it was pretty impressive I watched it all even though I had no idea what was really going on lol nice job dude 👌👏👏
Cracking video very informative and one to swerve in the workshop due to costing of the tools required I know my boss wouldn’t pay for them. Kudos to you fella 👍🏴
Josh? made that look so easy, that would take me a week to do if I ever tried a big job like that! Could you ask him which magnetic torch he used when he was under the car👍
Fantastic Rob/Chris Thank him from all of us for doing this. And I hope you both bought him more than one drink 😂 great content and once again cheers guys 👍
If a friend of mine is anything to go by from working at Land Rover, he said "unless they are under warranty and you really want one don't touch them with a 10 foot barge pole as they get older" 😂
The design of this engine shows some great workarounds to make things work without any consideration for cost-effective parts replacement. Don't buy one unless it's brand new and in guarantee? Then sell before it rounds out!!!!
That young chap has some serious knowledge & patience. Is this the same 2.0 Ingenium engine as in the Jaguar XF do you know? I am getting concerned that my chain might need looking at if so. My engine is just coming up for 46,000 miles.
Hi Rob, my son puts a few bits on youtube and includes music. I tell him about copy rights but he says as long as he puts title and artist its ok. Maybe you could look in to it where you have good footage but cant use because of a radio on in the back round. cheers Jim in NZ.
Surprised that those timing chains look the same size as the one on my pedal bike (which don't last long), my Defender Td5 engine has a double row timing chain and should last the life of the engine. Tiny bit more friction maybe? but I know which I would prefer. Great video by the way 👍
It's like someone sat down and thought how can I design a timing chain to be as difficult and expensive as possible to change and just to make it interesting let's run the engine anticlockwise and not clockwise like all the other engines in the world to catch out all the diy mechanic's but just why?? All that said an awesome professional company have made an awesome video.
Jaguar LandRover in Korea has started recalling these timing chains and replacing them free of charge. If enough people come forward they might start doing it world wide
Think it's either the 2018 or 2019 discovery sport they upgraded the timing chain to rectify this issue so I'm assuming that's the kit they are using for the older models could be wrong tho

In 1975 I had an Escort Mexico with 75,000 miles on the odometer. I changed the chain as a precaution. It took less than 2 hours and in fairness to Ford it would have done that distance again. Where have we ended up? Sad.
An example of why the genius design engineers should spend their first year repairing these engines to teach them empathy and common sense.
This guy knows his stuff and is very good at explaining, love the line "these are the easy ones"
Most garages would not touch this job out of there comfort zone and would not have a clue this guy is a pure genius a bit like our Chris.
Just admire these lads with their skill and knowledge. So much dismantling to make the repairs.
