      This design of timing an engine is so bad and so overly complicated and expensive, that it must have been designed that way on purpose, so as to make more profit for the dealers.

    I think this is one of the best video's you've ever done. Josh is such a talented bloke and to show the whole process step by step as he worked on your car is absolutely brilliant! The quality of those original tensioners is absolutely appalling and JLR should be replacing timing chains or written off engines engine's free of charge. The other question was would a JLR dealer have taken the time to remove all the debris from the sump in the way that Josh did? I seriously doubt it.......

    • @keithchenery7748
      @keithchenery7748 Год назад

      Completely agree, no problem if you take a job to him and he'll have a job for life as long as JLR manufacture engines like this one. Absolute disgrace. Great until 5 past warranty.

      Well it that's your attitude you shouldn't be within a hundred yards of a set of spanners! Firstly it's called taking pride in your work and secondly bits of tensioner can easily get smashed up by a spinning crankshaft and sucked into the filter of the oil pick up pipe from the pump and blocking it @@byteme9718

    That needed a certificate rating, what a nightmare to change a timing chain. If it was a bulletproof design that never usually needed work, it would be uncomfortable, but it does not appear to be anything like bulletproof. Total fanfare to Josh for demonstrating his skill, and knowledge and bring the horror package to life so clearly. You could see the honesty, skill and dedication he brought to what was a challenging couple of issues, the job, and filming the job, a great result on both scores. No wonder his set-up is the go-to place for such work.

The design of these modern engines beggers belief with the cheap components and difficulty to repair it must be costing manufacturers a fortune in warranty claims. Echoing the praise for Josh. What crazy amount of work to replace a timing chain such as removing the gearbox. Ive done a few cambelts/chains but having seen this I'd think twice about a modern car. They dont last as they are way too complex meaning people cant afford to fix them as the car ages, so good condition cars go in the crusher.

    I wouldn't waste my money on a Jag that looks like any other car and needs a timing chain at 31 thousand miles. Seriously there are so many better cars to choose from than these things. Too many so called luxury cars today are overpriced and overated and that T chain assembly looks like it wouldnt be out of place on a moped. Good vid though lots of info.

      I agree to an extent. I mean, a lot of timing belts have a longer service life than that Jag chain. I bet that car has been thrashed during its short life to warrant a new chain so soon. I had an Alfa 1.6 T Spark that required a new belt every 30k miles, but only changed it once in the two years I owned it. Then ended up trading it for a Saab 9-3, with belt change intervals every 90k miles.
      I'd be curious to know what the recomnended chain change intervals are on these ingenium engines.
      I was always led to believe that chains didn't need changing! How wrong those so called mechanics were who said that!!!
      However, most mopeds are only single pot engines, so no where near as elaborate a set up as this. But maybe a Perodua Nippa had a similar set up, albeit with a 3 pot 600cc engine.

    Would Josh share in his opinion why these chew the timing chains so badly??

    • @organiccold
      @organiccold Год назад +1

      He said it in the video the Reason: chains are way thinner nowadays and of course the plastic.tensioners don't help

    • @hermanmunster3358
      @hermanmunster3358 Год назад +2

      I can't believe they make the chain guides out of plastic. With the speed that chain moves over the guide, they are BOUND to fail before long, due to the constant heating and cooling, causing the plastic to become brittle. It's madness imo, unless there is a valid reason to make them from plastic.

    • @pashwesty3313
      @pashwesty3313 Год назад

      @@organiccold yes but that goes for most manufactures now, but to see some failing at 30k there has to be something specific to this engine, lack of oil to the chain maybe? Or just poor components

    Amazing video I hardly noticed the time passing as I was engrossed in what was going on. Josh is very skilled at what he does and explains it brilliantly - facinating to watch. What a complex job a timing chain is on these engines must need hours of labour. The fact that they had three ingenium engines in at the same time and one with only 31K doesn't say much for these engines - JLR really didn't do themselves any favours with this engine it really ought to have been better effort.

    Somethings never change. On the Ford Granada they fitted a fibre timing gear which used to disintegrate and if the sump was not cleaned out you ended up with a wrecked engine from debris blocking the oil pickup in the sump.
