Did you know that only one of these family seven-seat SUVs has airbags that will cover the third row occupants?
You'll find out which one in this video where Richard Berry takes two of the world's best seven-seat family SUVs and puts them head-to-head.
In this battle we have Toyota's new generation Kluger GXL Hybrid taking on the Mazda CX-9 GT SP. Both are all-wheel drives.
We've compared the Kluger GXL Hybrid and CX-9 GT SP for their value, features and price, their engine specs and fuel economy, also for their safety systems, practicality and boot space, and their servicing costs.

CX9 owner here, so I'm biased, but surely the Kluger is only more comfortable until you have an accident with your kids in the third row. You only get a split second to deal with an impending collision, which is certainly not enough time to re-prioritise your purchasing decisions and trade comfort for safety. Both of these cars are great and give you options regarding what your priorities are (driving dynamics and style win it for me), but a minimum standard should apply.

@@petecotter6790 my dad used to own a cx9 azami 2020, it got around 8.5l/100km after a month or two, at the beginning of the usage of the car it was closer to 13l, you will need to have to drive it for a bit for the ECU to tune to your driving style and save fuel. We got around 700-800km on a full tank on 98

@@oplisderi3164 using less fuel because engine has bedded in, or worn in. Rings wear in less producing less friction. Some manufacturers I have heard, changing the tune after the initial run in period, running a bit rich for extra safety in ignition timing. We had a 2020 cx 5 turbo and was a pig on fuel! Never got below 11 around town

My money will be on Mazda CX9 just because this has an automatic transmission not cvt like Kluger and Bose sound, sunroof, 4 cylinder turbo engine will be more reliable in long run, bigger/better display/screen which is easy to via rotary dial while driving, bugger wheels, lovely seat leather n colour and it doesnt looks like a Rav4.....

The CX9 screen and interior fit does look better, but i also like all the little cubby holes on the toyota. BTW the CVT in the Toyota isnt one of those metal belt types. I would shy away from those too, but like the Camry etc, this has metal cogs all over. Worst explanation ever, i know.

I do not really get how the review shows the third row space in Kluger is better than the CX9 as I have recently inspect and test drive both cars, the third row for CX9 you can easily fit for a audlt with 175cm high with reasonable knee and leg space, however the Kluger third row for the same size adult they will find almost no leg and knee space and it is awful third row design compare with the previous generation.
Carsguide must have very special camera and measuring standard when come with reviewing the third row... Paid and Sponsored by Toyota?

According to carsguide, the Australian crash testing expert view is "ANCAP testing protocol deems the airbag coverage appropriate in three-row models if the safety device covers window and glass areas, and in the new Kluger's case, that "the occupants of all three seating rows are protected by side curtain airbag".

I predict a comback of luxury wagons, like the Outback because based on the pricing of these things, and the fact most are based on the road car wagon/sedan underpinnings anyway, just don't seem worth it. Unless you need 7 seats...

Two different kinds of buyers here, Mazda have the impression but Kluger have the practical style & design approach. Kluger AWD will be my next buy, the confidence it gives to go mostly anywhere and all years long is insane. I myself can't image a CX9 can last.

You are my favourite reviewer. Others are boring, sorry others. BTW i think review should have shown some of the tech relating to the Hybrid function, eg screen info. For ppl buying a new car it might be their first hybrid, and i think it's a big selling point / deciding factor.

Toyota won’t give any discounts, Mazda will
In Mazda, a adult can sit in the third row, not in the kluge
The interior of CX9 is luxurious and material feels soft and expensive. Kruger gives you the same old cheap plastic

Just one correction the new Kluger side curtain airbags do go all the way to the rear third row which you can verify by watching the Ancap 5-star safety crash test video on youtube. I had my first drive of the new 2021 Kluger Grande today and needless to say I signed the papers when we got back to the dealership.. Toyota has definitely listened to its customers on this one and updated the interior cabin. It reminded me of my first drive in my pops Landcruiser without that weighted front end that you get from the heavy engines on most Toyotas but was effortless to drive like a CX3. This vehicle will sell out fast for sure. Make sure to get the Hybrid, such an amazing driving experience. :)

Other brands may have a bunch of electronics more, but Toyota delivers cars which spend more time on road and less time on mechanics workshop. In ten years time, there will be more 2021 klugers still running while you would be lucky to see 1 CX9 around. No brainer.......

  • @nicholasbath7703

Big oversight with the airbags on the Kluger. The Front cabin looks like a toy car crash.
Mazda wins for me but the Kluger will outsell no matter how ugly.... Australians weird love affair with the big T brand continues!

Have much better features then Toyota .

Toyota now tries to cheap out on the interiors just because of blind popularity among most Australians .Other car manufactures are offering digital cockpit systems and much posher interiors than Toyota and what's with the aftermarket 8 inch jbl touchscreen Toyota ? why not we get 12.1 inch touchscreen like other western markets for price of almost $80000 for the top range Kluger.

Agree the quality of Toyota fit and finish is nowhere close to the Cx 9. Also drive is dull. The only thing Toyota does well is the engines. Third row in Mazda is also better than new Kluger,

This host man over 190cm whichever seat in the 3 rd still small and people need to push 2rd front then every adults fit there remember this any SUV 3rd tight for adults, if you want bigger 3rd buy Carnival or Odyssey or Tarago or Alphard
Bros are kluger has hybrid and e4 drive
Cons are not good quality interior and over price.
    CX9: luxury interior 2.5T engine
:5 years old design more fuel consumption
