    Now I shall tell a story that will make people mad at me.
    About two years ago I was at a thrift store looking through their collection of cables and found a GameCube component cable in there... for $2. Not $200, Two Dollars flat.
    Got to the register, hoping that they still would not realize what they had. I don't have cash on me, and there's a $5 minimum on debit charges there. So she decides to just give it to me for free with my friends order.

      In the 90s there was a used game store down the street from me that had 3 copies of Starfox Super Weekend. They were listed with the same price as the original Starfox game, and my dumbass didn't see the point of grabbing one because the store owner told me it was just Starfox, but with a different label.
      Yeah... look up "Starfox Super Weekend" on ebay right. This shit haunts me to this very day...

    I have to disagree with your views on the Dolphin emulator. I have played with the emulator alot, and at my college's last LAN Party, I hooked up the Mayflash Gamecube USB adapter and was playing 2-Player Mario Kart Double Dash at 1080p, 60 fps LOCKED. No hiccups, no stuttering. It was great and very nostalgic for alot of us at the party. Now there are numerous games that just don't work with Dolphin, but to completely write Dolphin off as something "neat to tinker with" but with no real functionality is not right in my opinion. I have also purchased the Mayflash Wii Remote adapter and have played a few Wii games on Dolphin again at 1080p 60fps locked. And again it's great.

    • @zak8953
      @zak8953 8 лет назад +19

      +VGSoundtrackGuy Dolphin is anything but perfect, but it is hands down (in my opinion) the best modern emulator in existence.
      It's truly amazing! The compatibility is incredibly impressive for an emulator its age. I own a GameCube and a Wii but you haven't lived until you've played Brawl and Melee with increased resolution.
      The only downside is that in order to get it running at full speed you have to have some pretty hefty hardware (which thankfully I do). I can't wait to see just how much Dolphin will improve over the years.
      To be fair they also didn't completely write off Dolphin, I just suspect that they don't have as much experience with emulators. They can be rather finicky.

      +Zak S I run melee on 2x with a n AMD x4 860k

    • @DarylWiseJr
      @DarylWiseJr 8 лет назад +8

      Zak S As of late, My Life in Gaming has persuaded thousands of viewers (including me) to research and invest into what MLiG has recommended. And they pretty much said in the video that Dolphin is "cool" but don't expect much. Which in my opinion like I said, is not right. I cannot tell you how much joy I've received from running my favorite childhood games at 1080p 60 frames per second locked on Dolphin. Dolphin is not perfect, but it DOES work and can be the best solution for HD def GameCube as long as the person is okay with a handful of games not working on the emulator as of right now.
      Because of the way MLiG talked about Dolphin, it makes it sound like a waste of time to download Dolphin because of it's lack of rock solid performance in some areas. So the average viewer, the GameCube component cables or the HDMI mod sounds better than Dolphin by the way this video makes it sound. So yes, in a way it does look like they talked about it just to write it off. They could of worded the section on Dolphin better.

    • @1chiTheKiller
      @1chiTheKiller 6 лет назад +7

      VGSoundtrackGuy Their issues primarily stem from the emulator not being nearly as accurate as some of the better emulators for older systems like NES or Atari 2600. Those systems can have nearly entirely accurate emulation, but Dolphin has a long way to go to claim that for most titles at this point. Also, in my experience I've noticed the audio isn't nearly as accurate in terms of sound quality as original hardware. Like they said, it's fun to play with for now, but it has a long way to go to be generally considered accurate to original hardware.

    You should of mentioned Wii2HDMI. It's not a proper scaler and adds jaggies to Wii titles so preference is on a person to person basis, but it does make the GC tiltes look better for sure. It's generally around $15-$20 online but it also has an external headphone jack for audio out as well. It's a cheap alternative worth looking into for GC on the Wii even if you don't use original discs. Every time I was like "you forgot to mention" it literally happened right away. I did that about 4 times! Great episode guys!

    • @1chiTheKiller

      Para-holiX I have one and the quality isn't very good. Video signal is overly bright, and sound is extremely loud and distorted unless you output audio through the 3.5mm headphone jack. I wish the Wii got more love. Hopefully some time soon the Wii can receive something like the EON HDMI adapter for the GameCube. I would be so happy for something like that.

      +Knots [Try4ce] It's definitely impressive, but even with the dev build and some assistance (on a pretty beefy computer), we saw enough quirks to make us feel like the experience wasn't quite what it should be. But do note that emulation is not our area of expertise or the focus of our show. It's always primarily about what can be done with original hardware, but we do like to mention emulation if there's something interesting about it.

It naturally outputs a VGA signal, so if you use the Dreamcast VGA box (I got mine for about $50) you'll get amazing quality video. I was astounded by how incredible the Dreamcast looked over VGA. It truly made all the difference. There IS a new HDMI cable solution for the system, and while it looks miles beyond the standard composite, the VGA box is still notably clearer. Try that out if you have the ability to use VGA. My new TV has VGA on it and I've never seen my Dreamcast look more beautiful.

    You should redo this sometime. With Dolphin 5.0's release, it can now play 99.9% of games perfectly with no glitches, including games by Factor 5, which use some weird rendering mode that was deemed "impossible to emulate." Not to mention, lots of the games have HD texture mods, which may allow *half* native HD, I guess, since the textures themselves are HD when played in a HD upscaled resolution.

    I use a Wii2HDMI for my Wii. It works pretty well, but I found out the hard way that certain Virtual Console games do not support the Component AV Interlace mode, the mode that converts the 240p to 567i. For now I've just swapped between HDMI and composite cables whenever I want to play one of those problem games. But I'm looking for a more permanent fix. What's really strange is that even the HDMI inputs on my generic SCART scaler and S-video scaler didn't recognize the 240p Virtual console games, and that's despite the fact they it recognized PS1 games output through the PS2 to HDMI adapter! I also found the image to be significantly darkened whenever upscaled through these scalers, whereas the Wii2HDMI on its own had more vibrant colours.
    The Wii2HDMI has 1080p printed on it and the box says it upscales to such resolution. But in fact it's just an analog to digital converter without any upscaling. Supposedly, you can activate the upscaling by sticking a straightened paperclick into the little hole on the side, but it does nothing. All I can feel with the paperclick is the other side of the inner plastic casing.
    The RGB SCART cable might solve all this, but I can't seem to find the official cable on ebay. I'm not risking my money on a generic SCART cable, they typically have noise in the audio and video. The only company I've trusted with generic SCART cables is Retro Gaming Cables, but they don't sell Wii cables.
    How does the DVDO iScan Micro handle 240p and 288p content? Would it work with the Wii2HDMI in outputting Virtual Console games that don't support the component interlace mode? Or is it possible to at least mod the Wii2HDMI so it simultaneously outputs composite AV through its 3.5mm headphone jack?

    • @1chiTheKiller
      @1chiTheKiller 6 лет назад

      Jarrah White Actually there are some Wii2HDMI adapters that DO upscale. Mine does, but that adapter is known for having many versions that don't upscale at all, while keeping the "1080p" graphic on the adapter. It all depends on which version you buy. Mine is the Tomsenn version and it has actual 720p and 1080p ouput on it which can be toggled between. I'd show you screenshots but RUclips doesn't really allow that.

    You can actually get games to run on Dolphin pretty nicely by tinkering with settings, and they're usually case-by-case, and they're all on dolphin's wiki.
    also, i'm sure that the computer needs its own memory to do things, not just a gamecube's memory, so performance issues are only expected. So, if you can afford it, just get better hardware. You could even wait for a price drop on the current hardware because it runs GC games just fine! These considerations should make Dolphin a more viable option.

    I was using my Wii the other day and I was thinking about how annoying it was that my PAL hardware doesn’t support 480p, and I started looking into ways of getting 480p with my hardware, but then I realised that my RGB SCARTs not support 576i/576i and my Sony Trinitron only supports 576i/480i anyway and I literally don’t own a 480p capable display outside of my PC monitor. And I wouldn’t want to use 480p anyway even through the resolution is higher as my Sony Trinitron is so beautiful I’d never want to use anything else. Except maybe a PVM but I don’t have that kind of money.

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  8 лет назад +11

      +HiTechnic [Try4ce] My understanding is that the HDMI mod does absolutely nothing that can add any lag on its own. However, because it does not do its own scale to HD, the input lag is completely reliant on how fast the display is.

    • @PlateProp
      @PlateProp 8 лет назад

      +HiTechnic tbh you can just buy an hdmi converter for your Wii (google around to find the good ones as there are a few duds) from amazon, and play Melee/Brawl/PM on a good monitor with no factoring frame loss (i.e you're only losing 1-2ms at most, no frame loss) and it makes recording a breeze. If you're looking for a more pricey option, the avermedia LGP line has a component to mini HDMI connector so that you can just run component in and then hdmi out for the same effect while also being able to record with just two cables (the LGP itself shows visual feed on the computer through a mini usb connection and using their recording software.) Both options look good either way.

    • @SendFoodz
      @SendFoodz 8 лет назад +10

      the analog cables won't have any lag, but if you use something that involves digital (hdmi) it will. but also keep in mind old CRT tvs have basically 0ms delay, while high end HDTVs can have 70ms delay. so if you care about competitive smash, play on a CRT TV or you're wasting your time.

    So uh, any reason why we can't just emulate GBA in Wii and Wii U? If y'all talking about Homebrew and go for function first, the WIi U sounds like the ultimate Nintendo emulator, next to the Switch but you wouldn't have to worry about your NNID being banned when going online.

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  5 лет назад +1

      [Try4ce] The point for this video is using original hardware. The Game Boy Player is real GBA hardware. The official or homebrew software for it doesn't change how the hardware processes the games, only how they are displayed.

    • @bluephreakr
      @bluephreakr 5 лет назад

      @@mylifeingaming My concern is for the money, if you can deliver RGB output from either of the Wii consoles (RVL-001 for regular Wii, preferably), it seems like a _massive_ waste of time and money to invest in RGB for the GCN if you're just looking for a Nintendo box. The Wii U is significantly better for N64 play, since its processor should be able to handle it better and it's also easily hacked through web browser exploits, which is why for a lot of people they might not even bother with GCN and save their money for a newer console.
      Sorry if that perspective is disappointing Try, but my thinking leans toward practicality. Good videos though, they are enjoyably informative. _The only problem_ with this perspective is emulation accuracy. But I don't believe a lot of people care about that as much as they care about it working, and so long it works a Wii or WIi U as an emulation box doesn't seem so bad.

    lol.. I just realized how lucky I was.. I picked up a Gamecube package for 195 dollars. It included a Gamecube (ofc.. 😂) Zelda Twilight Princess, Zelda WW, Super Paper Mario TTYD a single controller.... and (wait for it...) the Original Component Cable!!! I thought it was expensive.. little did I know.

    24:05 I'm a little confused. You say that the PAL GameCube only supports Sync-on-composite, but retroRGB.com recommends using the SNES Sync-on-luma cable for the PAL Gamecube.

      +Jarrah White [Try4ce] I'm pretty sure that's accurate. It doesn't support S-video, so I don't know where it would pull sync-on-luma from (as far as I know, that's where luma always comes from, but I'm no expert on that matter). I forget if I double-checked all these things, but unfortunately the system is out of my hands now.

    *Teen Titans for Gamecube doesn't work for Wii backwards compatibility. You can play through the opening training sequence of the game but then it just won't load anymore of the game. There may be more games like this.*

    I dont see any difference of whatsoever that is worth me paying so much for that mod or device. S-Video it is. All this mumbo jumbo is just numbers on paper. You will not see a difference if you dont know there is one.

    I wonder what kind of system you were running Dolphin on, because I have been able to run most Gamecube games absolutely smoothly and without any major issues at an increased resolution with it for ages even on mid-range hardware, and would absolutely consider it the best way to experience the vast majority of Gamecube retail titles for anyone who isn't nostalgic about original hardware or resolution. Some titles have issues, but you can generally look those up in advance. I get that for you guys accuracy is key, but for a lot of people the experience doesn't have to be extremely accurate if it's impressive or convenient in other ways. I'll take running one of my favorite games at 1080p 60fps on my PC with potential minor issues over a perfect 480p image that took a lot of work, money, and time and might even need a CRT to be fully appreciated. Different solutions for different needs. I don't like how you wrote it off here, it seems elitist. I personally just never want to see a 3D game in a resolution under 1080p again, I don't enjoy that level of image quality anymore (for 2D games original resolution will always remain king), so for me, emulation is the way to go.

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  6 лет назад +1

      [Try4ce] It's difficult to word things on emulation because we have a great deal of respect for what people are doing in that scene, and believe people should do what they want to get the experience they're looking for with a game, but at the same time it's not our area of interest or expertise, so we don't want to say too much because we're a bit ignorant on it. We just want to acknowledge that it is there, but it's not what people are watching our videos for. For what it's worth, I believe the version of Dolphin available at the time of this video was just before they released a new super stable version that fixed a lot of problems.

    Now as an English person, I choose to play my games with a 50hz CRT, so for Gamecube all I need is a set of SCART cables which is far easier to get than component cables. Of course, that’s only 576i, but to be honest that’s good enough for me.
    *EDIT:* After discovering my CRT supports PAL50, PAL60, and NTSC, I’ve been messing around with PAL60 mode on a lot of my games. I can see the resolution drop clearly, but the boost in frame rate is amazing. Not because it makes the motion smoother, but just because it flickers less. I might upgrade to 480p someday if I ever get an EDTV CRT so I can get the reduced flicker without loosing so much resolution. Or even 576p, as without interlacing the 50hz flicker shouldn’t be that bad.

    Awesome videos. These have inspired me to get RGB cables for some of my systems and I'm so pleased I have.
    I was wondering though as I am in the UK so have PAL systems for my Wii would I be better off with RGB SCART or the official Wii Component cables?

    You can consider an FPGA a "blank" silicon chip you can put any kind of circuitry (up to a certain amount of transistors or logic gates) into it. This is why cheap FPGA makes previously ASIC-only tasks possible: you can create a chip by programming a blank one, instead of having to make ASICs which is a million-dollar endeavor.

    16:47 AVOID THE OFFICIAL WII RGB SCART CABLES LIKE THE PLAGUE!
    I typically use the Wii HDMI adapter, but it didn't work with certain Virtual Console games. So I ordered an official still sealed in the box Wii RGB SCART cable. The picture was full of checkerboard noise, indicating poor shielding. And this is the OFFICIAL NINTENDO BRAND! Leave it to Nintendo to cheap out on quality.

    I loved my GameCube, but it was stolen along with 48 games and a myriad of accessories when I was in a homeless youth shelter. Still, I have a modded Wii and Wii U, plus Dolphin 🐬 is one of the greatest emulators out there.
    As far as GBA games, they can be played on my DS Light or even my modded New 3DS XL if I don't want to emulate them.
    The GameCube was one of my favorite systems of all time; it was fast, small, light, quiet, the game discs seemed super cool at the time, it had virtually no load time on most games, and it had one of the greatest controllers off all time.
    That being said, I don't miss it because I can play all of the games with the real controllers either on my Wii consoles or on my PC with the official Nintendo USB adapter.

    You guys could potentially update this video! Zeldaxpro is selling an external HDMI mod for the GameCube with setting options. Also wii homebrew adds an awesome GBA emulator called mGBA. This emulator has excellent compatibility and I've noticed no slow downs or glitches while using it. And the best part is there is virtually no input lag. Oh and it also has an option to run at 240p.... Although it can run internally at 480p so it looks great regardless. It's my preferred method of playing gameboy games. Oh! I also use the wii classic controller with the emulator since the GameCube controller isn't always the best thing to use and the Hori pad is becoming harder to find. The dpad on the classic controller is pretty good

    I actually bought the official component cable direct from Nintendo back in 2003 just to play Metroid Prime in 480p, and have hung onto them ever since. Upgrading from blurry composite was an absolute revelation at the time -- not being a PC gamer I'd never seen a game look so good.
    I had no idea the cables were so sought after! Or that Nintendo took the port off later revisions of the hardware. I remember the package they came in had Japanese writing all over it, which seemed really strange for a Nintendo product to not have localized packaging.

    You guys should redo this video with the new HDMI plug and play adapters like the ZXP one and the EON one. I have 3 of the ZXP ones and love them! They also allow you to use the AV slot for S-Video at the same time unlike the EON ones, which is pretty sweet!

    • @cfreddykrueger
      @cfreddykrueger 6 лет назад

      Austin 'Auddy' Davenport I agree! They should compare the ZXP, EON, and the original Nintendo component cable. I have the EON and I’m very happy with it. I saw the ZXP 3.0 was released and think that it looks awesome and being $50 cheaper than the EON it may be a better option for most people. I agree with you in that it’s nice that the ZXP leaves the AV slot open just in case you need it.

    Will the size of your television change how the visuals look? I bought me a pair of Component cables not too long ago but I was wondering if something like a 50" LED TV impact performance?

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  8 лет назад

      [Try4ce] Nah, TV size is just personal preference. Bigger doesn't mean that performance is impacted, but other factors in how the manufacturer handles image scaling could impact performance.

      [Try4ce] We have not used one of these devices yet, but we believe the result will not be anything special... more of a convenience thing. When we do a Wii episode in the future, we plan to feature it, yes.
