      Jeff T That's bullshit. My PC has Core 2 quad q8300 from 2008 or something and it runs DOOM 2016 at 14-17 FPS low settings 720p whereas PS4 runs it at 1080p medium-high settings and solid 60fps. Yes the CPU clock speed is slow but there are 8 cores and I assume there have been other improvements to CPU features since then which some developers clearly take good advantage of. Just look at how good the animations, physics and ai of the machines are on Horizon Zero Dawn or how good SW Battlefront II looks while running at 60fps.

    • @ElricSowrd
      @ElricSowrd 7 лет назад +1

      Jeff T Even on PS3 and XBox 360, original fighting games still run in 60 FPS.
      Metal Gear Solid Vs is a free roaming game and it also runs in 60 FPS on PS4 and XBox One, so why couldn't games like Uncharted 4, Lost Legacy, the Assassin's Creed games and fucking FFXV on those Platforms do that?

    • @gentarofourze
      @gentarofourze 7 лет назад +5

      Thats what they call optimisation, that and these days games are made with console in mind and lazily ported to pc, if it was built for pc in the first place the console requirements would be higher, this is why GTA4 runs terrible even on a high end pc from now.

      Seriously, it is outstanding. I went through some trouble to get a Sony HD CRT this year in order to get the best image possible out of the PS2, and it made such a huge difference. The image with Component is better than when I was a kid, and back then I was blown away by PS2 S-Video. Also, I had no idea that God Hand existed until this video, so you're right about the hidden gems too.

    For the PS3, the yellow light of death has finally been accurately diagnosed. It is a set of capacitors, the NEC TOKIN ones that filter power to the PS3. You can read more on it but the yellow light of death can be fixed, and once it's fixed, it is permanently fixed.

    It's interesting seeing just how different the design philosophies of the Dreamcast, PS2, GameCube, and Xbox truly were.
    - The Dreamcast was designed to bring the NAOMI arcade experience to the living room and kickstart a new era in gaming.
    - The PS2 was designed to follow up the success and hype of the PS1, turn game consoles into more than just game consoles, and take full advantage of everything CRTs had to offer.
    - The GameCube was designed to bring gaming into the digital audio/video age (albeit much too early for its own good) and break Nintendo out of the mold of them being a behind-the-times kiddy company (an effort that crashed and burned as soon as it got off the ground).
    - The Xbox was designed to bridge the gap between console gaming and PC gaming and pick up the slack when Sega's huge debts inevitably took them out of the race.
    Really, the vast diversity of visions present in sixth generation consoles, combined with the sixth generation's general emphasis on experimentation (meaning that any genre could sell pretty damn well, with no conforming to a general trend), made 1998-2007 a sort of creative high point for the gaming industry as a whole, even if it was during a time when gaming had become incredibly niche. It's a shame that we probably won't see such a widespread amount of creative diversity in the industry again for a long while, if at all.

    • @rokmare
      @rokmare 7 лет назад +5

      During that era unlike today games are deal breakers people go where the games are and most are exclusive to one or the other unlike today where most games are multiplat. Also that era is the last were consoles are different from PCs because games release on consoles back than never had pc ports.

      I don't think so. PS3 have huge library of vastly different games and the best library of japanese imports in it's generation. Wii have also many hidden gems. Xbox360 was for me the odd one of them and the least interesting, with mainly Western developers on board. I still prefer my PS3 before PS4 because of many exclusive japanese games on it, most of them never ported elsewhere (or on PS Vita, which is for most people like they never existed). I was into strategy games and CRPGs at the time when PS2 rulled, so I wasn't interested and jumped from Mega Drive and Sega Saturn straight into PS3. And for me is PS3 my most beloved console (and PS Vita my most favourite handheld).

    Something that you guys missed is how some PS2 games handle widescreen; certain games (like God of War, Ratchet and Clank, and Jak and Daxter) use vert- scaling, which means they actually chop off the top and bottom of the screen in order to fit it into a widescreen display. So you may have to sacrifice resolution for some games if you want widescreen. The Wikipedia list mentioned in the video also lets you know if a game uses this method.

      But anyway, an episode about the Xbox would be very cool.

    Man, so much information flooding my mind. Good to know how PS2 will be played for the modern age. Real damn shame Sony is not following suit like Microsoft and going backwards compatibility. Then again, Nintendo isn't doing the same either.

    • @ABaumstumpf
      @ABaumstumpf 7 лет назад +14

      Well, it is kinda understandable:
      The PS2 and PS3 were rather specialized Hardware. emulating a PS2 even now takes a lot of CPU power - you can say roughly 10-20x that of the PS2, and the PS3 had even stranger spezialized Vector-units and other stuff.
      the first Ps3 models actually had the PS2 Hardware inside to do the emulating, then some versions tried it in software (which had some problems).

    • @Bond007er

      considering the chips used for the PS2 haven't been manufactured for 6 years and the cost issues with the PS3, they may have simply been turned off doing hardware emulation because of it.
      with nintendo i'm glad they moved away, the gamecube hardware simply wasn't competitive anymore, no matter how much overclocking they did with it. but even the Wii U can natively play gamecube games (with a bit of softmodding and ISO ripping)

    For some reason? Not everybody worldwide had HDTVs and HDMI cables back in 2006. There were very few people that had them in that year and a lot of people were still using CRTs and composite or s-video because HDTVs and HDMI cables were expensive at the time. If you can not afford a HDTV or HDMI cables, or course you plug it in with something else other than HDMI.

    • @AuntieAliasing
      @AuntieAliasing 5 лет назад +15

      I think his point is that composite was the only cable that ever came with a new PS3. Even the Super Slims from 2012 all the way until they stopped making them in 2017 only came with composite, although HDTVs were extremely common by then.

    48:20 For those that love their fat PS3s and want to avoid the "yellow light of death" I would highly recommend getting in there and replacing the thermal paste on the CELL and RSX. The paste that SONY used seems to be of very poor quality and by this point in the life of those consoles has usually degraded into useless, caked, chalky mess. It is a really simple fix for anyone with basic electronics or PC building experience. Plenty of good tutorials on RUclips.
    I few years ago the power supply on my launch 60GB PS3 died and I took the opportunity to replace the thermal paste while I had the thing open. It was huge improvement on the stability of the system and the noise level, as the system spends much less time with its fan in "jet engine mode."

      Climatee not really. Get the IHS off the GPU and CPU and replace that thermal paste. As that is the paste that was applied quite badly many times not even even completely covering the DIE. But unfortunately it is quite hard to get the IHS off the CPU.
      I replaced that thermal paste with liquid metal. So I have nothing to worry about anymore.
      But really the PS3 is a terrible system to take apart and put together again.

    Theres also the PS2 VGA mod, It pulls the RGB signal from the board itself and bypasses the video encoder to give itself a better picture. The mod is very obscure and can only be done on PS2s with motherboard revisions older than GH-015. I only found about about it via some obscure fourm posts and the small entry they have the playstation page on retroRGB.

    Hey, I just want to thank you guys for this incredibly in depth and informative video. My fat PS3 just died 2 months ago (yellow light of death) and I’ve just been kinda bummed that not only did my favorite console that played 3 whole generations of games die, but now a solid 1/3 of my library is unplayable at the moment.
    I’ve thought it over this whole time and decided that I’m gonna get a PS3 slim along with a PS2 slim and some component cables. As much as I would like to have another fat PS3, they’re quite old now and I’m worried a new one would fail too and I can’t afford another console to fail.
    Again, thank you so much for laying it all out for me. I got a plan in place and I’m getting ready to execute it. It may take some time because work slowed down immensely due to COVID, and I don’t have a lot of money to spend at the moment, but I’ll start saving up.
    Here’s hoping the launch of the PS5 doesn’t doom the PS3’s online store. Yet another thing for this collector to worry about.

      [Try4ce] Glad to have helped! One bit of information that has come about since the time this video launched, apparently it has been discovered that the PS3 YLOD is often (usually? always? maybe?) caused by a bad capacitor that can be replaced. This is a MUCH less difficult issue than had been assumed, and why fixes like reballing tended to only be temporary. I don't know much about the details myself, but I wouldn't toss that old PS3 fat just yet, since it likely can be fixed without a tremendous effort.

    Great video! Good quality component cables are way overpriced here in Europe (70 to 100$!!). I ended up building one myself; I bough a used official Microsoft XB360 component cable for 5$, a super cheap chinese ps1 scart cable for 4$, spliced the ms cable and soldered the appropriate wires to the ps2 cable's plug. Amazing quality, no video noise and no audio buzz! I also connected the composite video rca to the luma line, so I can use the same cable for both component and RGB (with a PVM or an inexpensive rca to scart pin adapter). I did a similar thing for my Original Xbox, using the composite rca for spdif audio. If you have the patience and the soldering skills I recommend you this method.

    Those Monster component cables with "death grip" need to be twisted as you pull. That's why they have a helix style cutout instead of the straight cut. Reason being is they are meant to be plugged and left alone knowing even if tripped over, they will remain attached. But can be quickly taken off as opposed to actual screw on variants.

      [Try4ce] It's true, plugging component cables straight into your HDTV does not look bad at all if your TV does a decent job of handling it, and you have realistic expectations for what PS2 resolution is gonna look like!

    • @FinalBaton
      @FinalBaton 7 лет назад +8

      Some HDTV and 4K sets handle 480p content quite well, so if you set your expectations accordingly like Try said, then it can look quite allright. 480i is harder to pull off still, due to the required deinterlacing but some sets still handle it quite decently.

It's my childhood. I'm hella satisfied that my childhood was with my PS2. I have my PS2 for 10 years and still playing it. Silent hill 2 and 3 was just way beyond their times. The graphics of silent is something you can only feel if you have that unique sense of taste. I love that you used footage from my favorite game, Radiata Stories. Even if its only for a moment.
    Edit: OMG you used music from its OST. Thank you for this.

      [Try4ce] It is, in my opinion, the PS2's best-aged game visually, so I am biased toward using it to demonstrate 480p on PS2. It's got 480p, proper widescreen support, runs at 60 frames per second, and has a charming visual style with a flat painted texture style. Can't beat that.

    I just purchased a PS2 about a week ago. I’m currently buying all of the games I had back them as a kid. I really appreciate this video. I’ll be able to experience classic gameplay in an updated visual state. Thank you guys for your tile and work on this video.

      [Try4ce] Haha Coury made a bit of a joke out of it. I had no idea what I'd written when I wrote it. He said it took him 20 minutes to say that line. You'll notice that he starts off saying the line really slow. Then there's a cut to finish the sentence, and it's way faster.

      [Try4ce] The new best choice for PS2 is definitely the RetroTINK 5X. We'll have a video out on it within about a week.

      Use the usb.Or buy a network adaptor knockoff with the sata connector.I have a original one with Ide connected to a sd card reader.So all my ps2 games are on solid memory.Less chance of data loss.

    PS2 is my favourite console of all time. Gt3, 4, splinter cell, soul reaver 2, re4, gta, tekken, hitman 2, onimusha, tenchu. So many superb games. And when developers knew the system inside out the graphics were sublime. I still own a PS2, if your going to play one on a modern TV component out with an HD upscale, however playing it on a Crt particularly sonys trinitron tech is recommended.

    Part of me loves the PS2 because of how great the system was.
    But another part of me hates the PS2 cause of how it utterly crushed the Dreamcast.

    • @VinchVolt
      @VinchVolt 7 лет назад +15

      The Dreamcast would've had an early death either way; Sega had accumulated so much debt as a result of the 32X and Saturn's failures that the only way they would've been able to climb back out of it is if the Dreamcast sold an impossibly high number of units. The PS2 simply sped up the process.

    • @SimplySteel
      @SimplySteel 7 лет назад +11

      Yeah Dont blame Sony for Sega's utter incompetence. I was the biggest Sega fan but accepted the truth. The drama between Sega's offices coupled with very poor decisions could have sank anyway company in due time.

    • @Fattydeposit
      @Fattydeposit 7 лет назад +7

      PS2 crushed Dreamcast on hype alone with stories run in international outlets about how terrorists want them to launch missiles. Sega spent their entire Euro marketing budget on sponsoring a football team.

      Sega of America you mean, sure Japan has its issues but it was almost all down to American Segas stupidity that lost consumer and game maker support.

    • @VinchVolt
      @VinchVolt 7 лет назад +1

      Except Sega of Japan actively hated their American division due to how much more success the latter had with selling the Genesis; this hatred is what bred the tensions between Sega of Japan and Sega of America that would lead to the two having virtually no communication with one another, something that played a huge role in the failures of the 32X and Saturn. Had the two divisions been more cooperative with one another, it's likely that the 32X never would've been made (as it was developed with no knowledge of the Saturn's existence until the very last minute) and the Saturn would've done a lot better.

    Thanks for linking to a featured games list in the video description. Some interesting looking titles I didn't recognize. I'm definitely going to have to check out _"Game Title". "Game Title"_ looks interesting as well. There are certainly a few hidden gems left to discover on the, uh...Sega...Playstation 2... Hmm... Something seems a bit off about that list but I can't quite put my finger on it...

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  6 лет назад +1

      [Coury] Doing the game lists is something that is a hugely daunting task for us, since it would require us to make them for over 140 episodes. I think because of that, we've pushed it off longer than we should have. I make the game lists from a duplicated blog page that has a basic format as a place holder.
      When things calm down a bit, we hope to take care of at least two game lists per weeks, which will still take over a year to do.

    I LOVE LOVE LOVE that you mention Dragon Quest VIII and the best setup to play it.
    That was literally the whole reason I started watching this video. I started to play it on PS2 on my 4K tv and it looked horrendous.
    After trying several workarounds (mcboot, etc) and not really knowing/wanting to use emulation, I eventually used exactly what you suggested.
    I found a backwards compatible PS3 off of Craigslist for $60 and I bought a Mclassic. I used the smoothing and upscaling features. I’ve been absolutely thrilled with the result. Thank you!
