    The rule about your gun going off or not going off didn't stop Andrew Jackson in his duels.

      Jackson's recocking and firing has been controversial. His pistol hung-up at half-cock to my understanding, so he didn't have a flash in the pan, and the issue fell within a gray area. I don't recall if the seconds told him to recock or if he just did it on his own.
