@bernardcoombs1778 the kids movie named "Trolls" like after the 90s troll dolls. It's basically one big long musical number and one part of it is the Simon and Garfunkel lyrics. Trolls came out after this was sung by Disturbed
I love both versions equally (which is rare for me). The lyrics are exactly the same, though, in the original by Simon and Garfunkel and this cover by Disturbed
EXACTLY!! Lyrics are the same, only the "feel" of the song is different. A lot of people like to say that this version is the angry, resentful version cuz the peaceful, original version was ignored!!
I was a teen when Simon and Garfunkel released their version. I loved it but, I have to say Disturbed's version is much more powerful! I can watch this video on a loop and never get tired. Honestly it gives me chills every time I see it. The 60s & early 70s were a time of protest songs but this video is particularly appropriate considering the instability of our society today. It reaches out and grabs you but the throat and shakes you to make the point "WTF is wrong with you" people are so blase about our crumbling infrastructures and systems. Wake up and pay attention. Sorry for preaching but that's the message I get from this video.
@@edwardbroyles9738 I agree. But I think "our crumbling infrastructures and systems" while far from great are a minor problem as compared to US's crumbling lack of integrity and fairness. Too many are sacrificing their morals for 'win at any cost' mentality. What is needed is an understanding of the problems and effective ways of pulling together to fix them. Blind pseudo-patriotism can do nothing but temporarily hide the warts and hide what is truly wrong. That has gotten us in the sorry state we are currently in. @@rk41gator I agree with you. My comment was getting kind of long so I cut it short. The original Simon and Garfunkel song seemed more hopeful like please listen to what I say. Disturbed's version strikes me as you were warned and you still are only interested in yourself. As in screw the future of the world, I just want to get more, more, more. Money & POWER!!

I've learned that David Draiman and Disturbed address depression, addiction and suicide during every concert, performance offering support and understanding. They are one of the most popular, loved bands of our time! ❤❤❤😊
While a huge fan of Simon and Garfunkel, I love this version also. As a cover, it is day and night from the original, yet genius and as moving if not more. That is why it works for those of us that were teens in the Simon and Garfunkel era.
Paul Simon shared this video on his social media with nothing but praise for it. Song author approval is the dream of any cover artist. (or at least I would assume so)
April 2016, Paul Simon endorsed the cover.[71] Additionally, on April 1, Simon sent Draiman an email praising Disturbed's performance of the rendition on American talk show Conan. Simon wrote, "Really powerful performance on Conan the other day. First time I'd seen you do it live. Nice. Thanks." Draiman responded, "Mr. Simon, I am honored beyond words. We only hoped to pay homage and honor to the brilliance of one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Your compliment means the world to me/us and we are eternally grateful."[72] As of September 2017, the single had sold over 1.5 million digital downloads[73] and had been streamed over 54 million times, estimated Nielsen Music.[74] As of July 2022, the music video has over 826 million views on RUclips, while the live performance on Conan has over 131 million, making it the most watched RUclips video from the show. LMAO the Trolls version wasn't the original, that would be Simon and Garfunkel from 1964, Disturbed did their version in 2015, the Troll version was a year later.
@@sportsmom165 Yes, and I know how much he hurt his grandfather by choosing the musical path he did, rather than continue through his faith. I heard they fell out badly, but thankfully, they reconciled their relationship before he passed away some years ago.
He wasn't classically trained, he was trained to be a cantor but that's different. Absolutely amazing voice but he has said on numerous occasions that he never had any classic voice training.
O absolutely LOVE this cover. and I am a fan of Simon and Garfunkel and I really like Simon & Garfunkel version who originally wrote the song......depressing but truthful....and this version is inspiring and forceful!!!!! L0ve it!!!! 💘💘💘💘
I, like you am a fan of both versions, also grew up listening and loving Simon and Garfunkle. What I'd say about this version and video is that it is so so powerful and I finally get the message that the original portrayed. So very very powerful, makes you sit up and think just how far down the road we have come . If only the original version had made us do the same then I don't think we would be in this mess that the world is in now. IMO.
This song has so many different meanings... When schools, especially public schools from kindergarten through high school, run out of funding, the first programs they cut ✂️ are the art's, music, theater, etc. Also, ISOLATION, DIVISION, LONELINESS, NOT COMMUNICATING, NOT STANDING UP FOR OUR RIGHTS OR EXPRESSING OURSELVES AND WHAT WE BELIEVE IN. We no longer interact face to face with each other, but through technology, social media on our cell phones and computers. I could go on and on. 😢
I'm old enough to remember hearing the original on the radio back in sixties. Paul Simon loved this, can't be said about alot of covers. If you haven't yet check out their covers of Genisis' "Land of Confusion" and Tears for Fears "Shout", called "Shout 2000". Both are excellent covers.
I loved your reaction and interpretation of it. The live version on the Conan show is even more powerful. David was very sick that night and they still received a Grammy nomination. Just AMAZING 👌👌👌
disturbed covered it from simon and garfunkel, and disturbed's conan o brian performance is just as beautiful, also the vocalist david was sick with the flu during it
When Simon and Garfunkel first released this song in the '60s, the audience loved it but the critics hated it, not because it wasn't a great song, it is, but because they were offended by the lyrics. They complained that how dare some barely 20 year old kid (Simon) skewer society like that, saying that something was wrong with our way of life. But, the song is poetic and people heard the truth behind the lyrics and resonated with them. Great cover!
Paul Simon congratulated David on his cover, after hearing it live on Conan. Simon and Garfunkel gave us the warning, Disturbed are pissed we didn;t listen.
The original by Simon & Garfunkel was a warning... Disturbed's version is expressed anger at the warning going unheeded... 🤨Love them both and the juxtaposition.😎
This is a cover of the original Simon & Garfunkel song. The words are the same, just sung differently. Disturbed did not change the words. I love both versions equally. This version is definitely darker in tone and feeling.
Trolls were not the first to record the song. It was written and performed by Simon and Garfunkel in the 1960s, and Disturbed did this as a cover version. David Draimain is a trained Cantor (Jewish chorister that leads the singing in a synagogue) but decided to be in a heavy metal band instead. Simon and Garfunkel's version speaks how folk were beginning to stop interacting with each other, bcoming glued to their TV sets instead and it was a warning. In this version it shows that it's still happening because now we hide behind our cell phones, tablets etc on social media, in other words decades later the problem in a way is now worse.
Deep, real and chilling. This grasps your very soul and shakes the living daylights out of it. It also personifies the message behind Simon and Garfunkel's original version, which pays homage to one of their college friends whom became blind and then survived that trauma, to be come successful in his own right. Love this song with deep sincerity!
This version is INCREDIBLE! If you want to see two other very good, a capella versions, check out Pentatonix and Peter Hollens featuring Tim Foust. Both are excellent. The Hound and the Fox featuring Adam Chance is also very good with only guitar accompaniment.
Both versions are incredible, David Draiman’s version pierces your soul . Paul Simon told David, you own this song now ( Enough said ) Never ever get tired of this cover, get chills every time.🙏❤️👍
