In this video, I have a chat with Yo Shionoya-Frank, creative writer, designer, consultant, mythologist and lorekeeper for the upcoming Ryoko's Guide to the Yokai Realms all about a new construct race coming to book: The Haniwa!

My buddy and I met and took a picture with you on the plane while we were on the tarmac at Charlotte Airport.
I'll be putting this in the feedback, but I just wanted to add that this race is slightly underpowered, which does take a bit of appeal out of the Haniwa. Small change I'd recommend is just adding resistance to poison damage in the Soul Shell feature. Also as someone else mentioned, no speed is mentioned
This is now by far my favourite construct race I have always wanted to play a golem like race and these are just like super cool golems.

A race I'd love to see is your take on a jiangshi style ghoul/vampire also keep up the great work can't wait to add these to my homebrew world
Just to clarify, the ancient grave and haniwa in the outside you see are reconstruction and representations. Most original haniwas were found in broken pieces but there were signs some of them were repaired or replaced. There was an another bigger mound grave site nearby that was covered in vegetation but you can still clearly see the morts and three layers etc. Biggest of these Ancient Tombs sites belong to the one for the Emperor Nintoku in Osaka, which is bigger than the Great Pyramid of Giza or the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor in China. Though Haniwa are more common place in northern countries like the one I am in (northern compared to Kyoto, not Tokyo as Tokyo was a part of the savage land back then --in 4th century).
@@alabasternights9998 Jiangshiis more of a Chinese thing and Japan don't really have vampire type Yokai beyond Nure-Onna type scary sea or river witches and Hi-no-maen type which is like a flying demonic women. Fox Demons kinda take place of vampires in a lot of Asian lores.
Would love to play a Haniwa Astral self monk, where the astral self is either the spirit being projected out of the clay body or is the spirit of the person who's grave the haniwa was originally tasked to protect
You should check out Spirit Caller Sorcerer subclass that’s on play test as well from Ryoko’s Guide

So applying the rules from Trent monk temple to rate races this is a pretty strong race as you gain 2 niche spells and 1 spell like ability that is very strong. Also you gain the benefits of being a construct without the downsides of being one.
Certainly a very interesting race to play as.
I haven’t watched the video yet but I had to comment about how the thumbnail for this one makes it look like your left eyebrow is trying to escape your face

Since they protect graves, it would be a cool concept if they gained special abilities to protect players who have fallen to 0 HP.
The Tengu race is my favorite so far. So hyped for this book. My 1st kickstarter.

Love the lore behind this character option and I'm always down for options other than humanoid. However, I do think it's a bit overtuned as it gets access to its Clay Familiar, magical weapon attacks, construct abilities and two spells. I think if it had its construct abilities, clay familiar and maybe Spare the Dying instead of Ceremony and Sanctuary that would be more in line with other character options.

I know that D&D already has goblins in it but the thought of having the Asian version the yokai goblin would be such a interesting cool ideas freshly since there's a lot of martial arts and wrestling themed around the yokai goblin just having like a monk with wrestling or throwing skills because of its race would be amazing
You mean like Ko-oni the small Oni? Those tends to be translated as goblins.
Actually the other way around. There are no such Yokai as 小鬼 ko-Oni. It only appears on Japanese texts as translation of Goblin. There are no goblinoid equivalent in Asian mythos.

I got three questions in mind. Would that mean Mending would work on them? Also this guy you got hired seems to be taking his job more as a historian mindset? and will the book be run with the mindset of "Rule Zero" where the players and DM's are left to figure out how much or how little of something they want to use?

I absolutely love the idea and the companion, though casting Ceremony and magical attacks are kinda meh. Ceremony is either OP or useless, and magical attacks are, like, a level something feature of Monk, and it's kinda looks like yuan-ti's magical resistance over gnome's cunning.

This is so cool. There's a passage in the Bible from the book of Joshua where a stone is called upon to bear witness and judge against the people when they break their faith. This would work perfectly for that!
