Water genasi got done real dirty when they lost shape water. I once played a water genasi rogue that used that spell to trip people with ice for easy sneak attacks.
Shadar-Kai are my new favorite class from MMOM. Whoever wrote that race was higher than a Aarakocra on speed. Plus I keep picturing Duncan Idaho just yelling _"Shadar-Kai"_ at the top of his lungs, while a band of shadow elfs just appear out of nowhere inside the castle.
You should do this for each individual race. A tire list of each version from different books and stuff. Just because some are nerfed or buffed. And because it’d be cool if a dm let you pick which version of the race you want. Also maybe do the same for classes.
I'm so glad the community is recognizing the rp potential, uniqueness, and mechanical benefits of shifters, I always felt they were an untapped goldmine, especially after the MPMM re release which allows more shifts per long rest.
Allow more shifts per long rest by nerfing the amount of shifts per long rest (min 3 max 8+ down to min 2 max 6)? Ah yes and water is superheated plasma.
@@ANDELE3025 If your DM is such a pushover that you can take 8 short rests per day with no consequences then go right ahead. I'm confused. Did you only talk about races that got some kind of update in that later book? If so, did all of these get updated that way? Is there a video where you discuss EVERY race? I was interested in your thoughts on races like Dragonborn and Leonin. Leonin especially because there are SO few videos out there talking about them and I don't understand why
Probably because it’s specifically from monsters of the multiverse. And the races you mentioned aren’t even in that book…? Maybe read the fucking title?
Even though the Rock Gnome isn't as buffed as the Deep Gnome, only 60ft dark vision, I had to go with Rock Gnome for that Music box. I have a spotify Playlist of classics for when I need situational songs and its so good for rp🎵 .
Yuan-ti are just busted in Volo's guide to monsters, IMMUNITY TO POISON DAMAGE and resistance to MAGICAL DAMAGE. I imagine this rogue sneaking into aristocratic parties, getting everyone's drink poisoned and just taking sips casually as everyone around it dies. OR the rogue locks the ball room's doors and let's out a bunch of poisonous snakes from a pouch it carried in and casts the spell Animal Friendship so they don't attack it (by the way, he forgot to mention you can cast that spell as many times as you want with this feature but like he said, as long as it's a snake).
Worth noting that the aasimar's Healing Hands ability says nothing about not working on undead or constructs (unlike cure spells) So you can be a pal to your modron marching buddies or your zombie backup dancers and patch them up when they get ouches. 👍
Something everyone COMPLETELY overlooks on Aasimar, the flight has zero notes at all about heavy armor. That means your flight (despite only being 1 minute) can go on your giga tanky paladin or barbarian and steam roll hard encounters
My favorite ever character I've made was a Bloodhunter Goblin in the order of the Lycan. I rolled a 17 when building him, so he started with 19 dex, 8 strength, 12 con, 14 int, 7 cha and 10 wis. He dual wilded scimitars and the DM let his hybrid form looked like a Barghest. He was chaotic good and was the opposite of a compulsive liar, in that he couldn't keep a secret if his life depended on it and it led to a whole lot of trouble for our group. God, he was fun as hell.
I do agree with the Water Genasi thing. They were my favourite race and my long term character is a Watet Genasi. It hurts how much Wizards seems to hate Water Elementals in general.
You know they actually received Dark Vision and an additional spell with MotM? They only took away Shape Water because they refuse to list spells that were released outside of the new printed material (and Player's Handbook). Odds are most reasonable DMs will let you swap out Acid Splash, because at the end of the day it's not really a big deal. Water Genasi may not be the #1 varient out of the bunch but have received nothing but buffs, and certainly aren't a bottom tier race.
The great thing about DnD is you can ignore shitty changes like this and continue to play water genasi with shape water, that's exactly what I'm doing in my current game
@@Cosmo_Samoyed They lost their swim speed, water breathing, and Shape water and instead gained 60ft darkvision, acid splash and then water walk at 5th lvl, that's not much of a buff. . . . .Seems worse to me. half water elemental and can't even swim.

Eladrins fey step for spring is an amazing movement tool. You can reposition your allies or get them where they need to be. Its both great as a martial and a spellcaster since most spellcasters dont use many bonus actions apart from spiritual weapon healing word misty step (which fey step basically is) or Quickened spells.
Small side note for Harengons, the Boots of striding and springing is broken on them as it triple their jumps. thats a 90 foot jump(at lvl 20) as a bonus action that doesnt provoke opportunity attacks
Shadar Kai are insanely good. I was seriously debating between them and Owlin when figuring out my rogue. I ended up choosing Owlin because flying seemed like it would offer more fun RP, but I guarantee the teleport with damage resistance would have more actual impact in combat than flight has.
I'm playing a Rogue/Battlemaster Shadar-Kai and she is awesome! One great ability that he left out is that you can wake up after a long rest and chose any two skills OR TOOLS to be proficient in, can really add versatility to your character. And teleporting to sneak attack/use battle manouvers is amazing.

At 3:37, he says gnomes have advantage on all INT, WIS, and CHA saving throws... but he is wrong. They only get advantage on these VS SPELLS, which is significantly worse. There are a ton of attacks monsters have that make you do one of these saving throws which are not spells. Some races, such as Satyr and Yuan-Ti, have advantage vs all spells, which is just plain better. Vedalken (from Guildmasters' Guide to Ravnica) gets what he actually said; advantage on all INT, WIS, and CHA saving throws.
So many good races. I've made a lot of character, haven't played them but making is half the fun. I think some of my favorite was Tortle Battlesmith/Chronlorgy Wizard, Eladrin Creation Bard/Celestial Warlock, Lizardfolk Gloomstalker Ranger/Battlemaster Fighter, Kenku Echo Knight/Phantom Rogue, Shadar Kai Twilight Cleric/Circle of Stars Druid, and Tabaxi Path of Giant Barbarian/Rune Knight. I myself have recently started entertaining the idea for a Yuan-ti Hexblade, and while the power is nice; I mostly did it because I like snakes (in fact I have a pet one) and I've always been more drawn to the more exotic reptilian races when it's come to RPGs in general to. Hence why if the snake person is ever off the table otherwise I'd play a dragonborn instead. I mean hell, second edition dungeons and dragons had the saurions; dinosaur people!
1: dinosaur people must be Jurassic Park'd 2: I have personally been fondly attached to dragons and other mythical reptiles, which is why I love kobolds because small snake people that roar and can, mechanically, set off Sneak Attack as a rogue, despite the Sneak part being thrown completely out the campaign window
Awesome List! I love this and can't wait for part 2!!! I will say that I'm surprised that you "only" rank flying as A tier (fairy), i would've thought S tier for them for sure! I guess i'll have to wait to see where the other fliers rank up! :)
We had a Tortle Grave Cleric in my game. Our favorite combo move was for the Sorcerer (Me) to cast catapult on him and launch him into enemies. We even gave him some spikes and a cool coat of blue paint for his shell. It was sweet.
Finally some Shifter love. They are in my top 3 races maybe top 5. They are definitely slept on. Eventually someone on Crit Role will use one and they will blow up lol.
I did amuse myself one time by making a fairy warlock of the fathomless so she could have good walk, fly, and swim speeds from level 1. Was planning on adding a level of twilight cleric for all those mad bonuses too.
Yeah DnD Shorts' reaction was a little silly, yes changing Shape Water to Acid Splash is lame, but they do that with every new release. Basically if it's not printed in the book or any core rulebook, Wizards won't even suggest it as an option. Other than that they got Darkvision and a new spell, which is awesome if you ask me, a straight buff from Elemental Evil!
@@isaacgleeth3609 I'd award the Chef Feat purely for role play if you did this. That would be a great RP moment for the party. "The soup is great, what is it?" "Bandits"
Blade Ward as Bonus Action with Multiverse Earth Genasi scale REALLY good on higher level compared you casting it Normally Also they still have Pass Without Trace, a really good 2nd level Spell that only Druid and Ranger have, i feel like they should be at least A Rank alongside Air Genasi
Earth Genasi are a "rock solid" choice, currently running an earth genasi hexadin. Blade ward is super neat when I get surrounded, and the fact that I can keep hitting the guy is great
The concept of certain races being a good choice to play against a common stereotype is so interesting. Instead of saying “I wanna play an elf barbarian” as its own character concept, going against a common stereotype by itself can be a character concept.
Fairy flight is one of the best versions of racial flight because it's equal to their walking speed, it isn't set to 30 feet. Meaning any movement boosting ability like longstrider, or playing a monk, will make the fairy's flight faster. Just thought it should be mentioned though, I don't think they're quite S tier.
Monk unarmored movement has always applied to all movement speeds a character has (Jeremy Crawford stated as much on twitter) meaning that the original Aarakocra would get its 50ft flying speed boosted by it. (Also, the Monsters of the Multiverse Aarakocra also get a flying speed equal to their walking speed.)
11:18 Don't forget prof in initiative rolls means it stacks with rogue's reliable tlent at 11th level, which covers one of the main cons of Assassin rogues
@@animemaniacforever Then maybe he should include that in the title so it isn't misleading? Then again, a lot of this channel has painfully clickbaity titles, so maybe that's on purpose.
Yeah, when I found out about shadar kai, I thought "They get all the benefit of elves with better version of misty step multiple times a day? I'm definitely playing one eventually."
The old version of Kobolds are a great race if you're a druid. You keep the features in wild shape, but take on the senses of your new form. That means pact tactics without sunlight disadvantage. The new Kobold is great. Check it out!
Another note. Old fury of the small for goblin was a one off. It is now usable a number of times equal to your prof mod as well. There for less up front damage, but more over all. At lvl 20 old would do 20 once, new does 6 damage 6 times 36 damage total.
Technically, Aaracokra were kind of buffed. The flying speed is equal to their walking speed. So monk Aracokra can now soar across the battlefield. And let's not even talk about monk barbarian Aracockra. Make the Aracokra eagle Totem so it can dash as a bonus action free of a ki point and enemies have disadvantage on the attack of opportunity ☠️
Also on the tabaxi. A good thing to run is a rogue with mixed fighting. Run in and attack and get out. Then if your DM uses Tasha's optional class features, get advantage and not move your turn.
I think my favorite race is Human/varient-human. Yeah its basic and definitely a lot weaker than half the other races. But i just love the idea of a Random Dude or Dudete! just picking up a sword, shield, stick or whatever class your going with and standing up to evil or whatever the main villian is.
Humans have best versatility no? You put points where you want them, I swear human types in every game always have the sorta jack of all master of none thing.
Variant Human is pretty much the most used race by optimizers because of the free feat. Along with custom lineage and especially before custom lineage was a thing.
Okay, ignore everything in the tier list. This is the ONLY CHANNEL where I refuse to skip past the ads, because they’re always some flavor of hilarious and awesome.
Swiftstride shifters are actually really good for aggressive martials. 10 ft extra Movespeed is nice already. But the 10 ft move as a reaction also holds for allies ending their turn next to you AND doesn't limit you to running away.
Fantastic list! I agree on almost all counts. I think you undersold Harengons a little bit with a B-tier ranking. Initiative boost, insane movement option (functionally as good as a teleport, and often better since it's not using a spell) and a dex save boosts? That earns them an easy A in my book.
I love playing my Bugbear Shadow Monk. He hits hard, hits fast, Flurries for more hits, and does it from 10' away. He shadow jumps all over the board, loves being in darkness, and is a stealth beast with +16(expert in stealth). He loves to appear behind enemies, attack with advantage, then back out with his 70' of movement. He's also one of the parties tanks w/ 20 AC, and can pop a Ki point for disadvantage on attack against him until his next turn. I flavor it as multiple shadows dance around him, confusing the enemy as to which one to hit.
Something to consider for a class for Deep Gnome is Ranger. Choose for your favored terrain the areas that take up most of the map, and you can't be tracked by magical or non-magical means.
4:31 so can Psions with the Transposition Discipline, "Flicker Step On your turn, you can replace your movement by teleporting 5 feet in any direction to a space you can see. This distance increases by 5 feet at 5th level (to 10 feet), at 11th level (to 15 feet), and becomes equal to your movement speed at 17th level. This replaces all movement for your turn when used." Meaning if you mix say, a level 2 monk, you can have high Ac and high tp is you roll well. Plus it reinforces some of the disciplines other abilities.

Everyone wants their character to be good at what they do, and having low stats in your character's primary abilities is more than likely going to hurt the party and your enjoyment.
@@isaacgleeth3609 That isn't really what I was saying. I just think that every single race can be viable and enjoyable, I didn't say that you should purposefully make your character bad.
Eh, I play a Paladin centaur. Stairs aren't an issue that often.
You are amazing at ad breaks. Normally I just skip or zone out to sponsors and stuff, but I actually listen to yours
YES! Long life bugbear fan! Had an echo-knight bugbear character and it was a blast just versatile and good!
Goblins are funny, and therefore good for D&D
Water genasi got done real dirty when they lost shape water. I once played a water genasi rogue that used that spell to trip people with ice for easy sneak attacks.
I think all the old genasi were preferable imo.
*33* *down.* However many the hell many are left (I haven't worked it out yet) to go...
You've got 1 year let before ObeD&D cuts down the number, so I'd like to see you finish.
You should do this for each individual race. A tire list of each version from different books and stuff. Just because some are nerfed or buffed. And because it’d be cool if a dm let you pick which version of the race you want. Also maybe do the same for classes.
The Dungeon Dudes already did a whole series of videos ranking the classes and subclasses, if you are interested.
I know. I think I watched all of them. They’re good
I'm so glad the community is recognizing the rp potential, uniqueness, and mechanical benefits of shifters, I always felt they were an untapped goldmine, especially after the MPMM re release which allows more shifts per long rest.
I have literally never played more than 3 in a day and especially never during the high stakes fast paced adventuring days when having those extra shifts would count the most.
@@Hungry_Burger Its not a question of the DM, its a question of player agency.
If you dont know how to efficiently use resources thus only have 2-4 fights a day, thats on you not the DM.
Either way, mathematically and for any RAW playing table thus objectively SR reset to PBLR is a nerf to a racial.
@@ANDELE3025 For you, its a nerf. For most people, less encounters and less short rests are the norm.
@@yanderenejoyer No. For most people that play D&D, its a wonder if a long rest can even be finished while in a dungeon when the day passes.
I'm confused. Did you only talk about races that got some kind of update in that later book? If so, did all of these get updated that way? Is there a video where you discuss EVERY race? I was interested in your thoughts on races like Dragonborn and Leonin. Leonin especially because there are SO few videos out there talking about them and I don't understand why
probably because the book leonin came from also had satyrs and, as he says in the video, satyrs were absolutely broken
I was waiting for grung but it never came
And the F tier locata
Probably because it’s specifically from monsters of the multiverse. And the races you mentioned aren’t even in that book…? Maybe read the fucking title?
@@Twisted-Tie When it was recommended to me, that part of the title was cropped out. So I was only shown "Ranking Every Race in D&D". Calm down.
Looking forward to hearing about Dragonborn.
And tiefling

Im here for the shifter love. Longtooth Barbarian on my end. Bonus action attack without needing a feat, or to go Berserker (yay for bear totem!)
@@Noobie2k7 Someone must’ve changed the wikidot page, because all that was still there last time I looked. And every screenshot of the book I can find on the internet begs to differ
@@Noobie2k7 what tf are you talking about? The screenshot he shows in this video shows they have a 30ft swim speed, and can breathe air and water. So all they lost was shape water.
I ended up choosing Owlin because flying seemed like it would offer more fun RP, but I guarantee the teleport with damage resistance would have more actual impact in combat than flight has.
they are, I've got a shadar-kai rogue swashbuckler and she is insane, we took down a boss in like four rounds...
I wish there were two kobold variants, with one keeping pack tactics since the new kobold doesnt really work with any old kobold build anymore, like ranger that I was using now cant get advantage with a bow :/
AND playing around sunlight sensitivity was really cool gameplay challenge
There is, technically. You can still use the Volos Kobolds
@@dreamcream3738 this is what I do. Always. Volo's Kobolds are the best

I also had this Kobold Sorcerer that was really high on stuff I wanted to try. It was going Draconic Bloodline: Black dragon for acid bonus and get Transmuted Spell so I could change Fireball into Acidball.
Variant human best race, hands down. Starting level 1 with a feat is insane.
Alternatively, you could also use the Custom Lineage from Tasha's. Free feat plus darkvision.
@@digifreak90
Down side for Custom Lineage. If you're a Warforged, then the CL Warforged won't have the same effects as the original Race. Since Warforged come with many effects.
@@absolstoryoffiction6615 well duh, the racial features are replaced by dark vision and a feat with +2 to an ability score. Vhuman and CL are pivotal to some of the op builds and outside of that can be great just for flavor feats that fit your character's backstory.
Man I love racial tier lists
😂 I love racing
Lizardfolk still get the ability to chop up a body and turn it into weapons in my games, one of the most interesting and creative ideas for an ability I've ever seen
Finally have been able to start playing D&D after a long, loong time. Never got to play really.
Now that our campain started I constantly brainstorm characters, and a video like this is a blessing, a compendium of knowledge.
Much appreciated, love your videos man, you have been a constant source of inspiration ever since I finally got back into the game.
Keep up the great work 🤘
I myself have recently started entertaining the idea for a Yuan-ti Hexblade, and while the power is nice; I mostly did it because I like snakes (in fact I have a pet one) and I've always been more drawn to the more exotic reptilian races when it's come to RPGs in general to. Hence why if the snake person is ever off the table otherwise I'd play a dragonborn instead. I mean hell, second edition dungeons and dragons had the saurions; dinosaur people!
1: dinosaur people must be Jurassic Park'd
2: I have personally been fondly attached to dragons and other mythical reptiles, which is why I love kobolds because small snake people that roar and can, mechanically, set off Sneak Attack as a rogue, despite the Sneak part being thrown completely out the campaign window
6:10 guide to dragon bondage? In a dungeon? Sign me up!
Awesome List! I love this and can't wait for part 2!!!
I will say that I'm surprised that you "only" rank flying as A tier (fairy), i would've thought S tier for them for sure! I guess i'll have to wait to see where the other fliers rank up! :)
Bro the Narnia reference at 15:24 completely blindsided me XD
Aberrant sorcerer changeling is still one of the best DND experience i've ever played.
Changeling enchanter wizard is also fun. I will have to try your combo next.
I have to defend Water Genasi here 😅 I’m playing one right now and she’s awesome!
I like this method of making the video where the old rulesets are included with the optional new ones.
Yes, Shifters are awesome and under-rated by many
Your style of presentation really fits this type of listing video. Thumbs up for the snugglebun category!
I miss the Lizardfolk weapon crafting ability, made for great Druids.
And it can be RP'd that, since the bones can't be eaten, what isn't used for stock in a stew is being implemented into weaponry.
Lizardfolk monks are also fun. Make darts and just piss people off at a distance.
You are my people.
@@isaacgleeth3609 I'd award the Chef Feat purely for role play if you did this. That would be a great RP moment for the party.

Blade Ward as Bonus Action with Multiverse Earth Genasi scale REALLY good on higher level compared you casting it Normally
Also they still have Pass Without Trace, a really good 2nd level Spell that only Druid and Ranger have, i feel like they should be at least A Rank alongside Air Genasi
@@digifreak90 Well, at least the classic aarakocra monk can still zoom, then!
Wow what a good idea you should do this for irl races next
Can't wait for Vedalken to make an appearance~

The old version of Kobolds are a great race if you're a druid. You keep the features in wild shape, but take on the senses of your new form. That means pact tactics without sunlight disadvantage. The new Kobold is great. Check it out!
can't wait for reborn lmao, i have a feeling they'll be in S tier
Another note. Old fury of the small for goblin was a one off. It is now usable a number of times equal to your prof mod as well. There for less up front damage, but more over all. At lvl 20 old would do 20 once, new does 6 damage 6 times 36 damage total.
Love how minotaurs don't get to deal damage with their horns unless you go monk or unarmed fighting style -_-
??? Minotaurs can use their horns as an unarmed attack action for 1d6+ strength mod
You’ve quickly become easily one of my favourite D&D content creators! Thanks for the fanatic content man!
My boy tiefling got left out 😔
Order of Scribes Kenku casually forges official signature and then erases the evidence. •̀.̫•́✧
Eagle Totem aaracokra is so flavourful as well 👌
Also on the tabaxi. A good thing to run is a rogue with mixed fighting. Run in and attack and get out. Then if your DM uses Tasha's optional class features, get advantage and not move your turn.
I loved it when you said "no one can pronounce these: Duergar" and then pronounced it wrong xD Also, water genasi *do* get darkvision?
Thanks for all you do for the community!
I couldn’t find the free Race from your website or the next video where you review the rest of the races.
1:25 in "and you deal extra radiant damage on every attack you make" while putting the text up on screen that says "once on each of your turns". 🤣
Some races are missing for example vedalken and autognome. Why ?

Okay, ignore everything in the tier list. This is the ONLY CHANNEL where I refuse to skip past the ads, because they’re always some flavor of hilarious and awesome.
Early crowd, reporting for duty
And keeping the geese away
Swiftstride shifters are actually really good for aggressive martials. 10 ft extra Movespeed is nice already. But the 10 ft move as a reaction also holds for allies ending their turn next to you AND doesn't limit you to running away.
This thumbnail hits different if you don’t know about dnd lmao
Fantastic list! I agree on almost all counts.
I think you undersold Harengons a little bit with a B-tier ranking. Initiative boost, insane movement option (functionally as good as a teleport, and often better since it's not using a spell) and a dex save boosts? That earns them an easy A in my book.
where is tiefling? is she safe?
Keep in mind that going Reactor 4 on a spellcaster means they have to roll concentration just by existing within your near proximity
x6 crowbars for bugbears? Wasn't expecting a Risk of Rain 2 reference in this video but I'll take it.
4:31 so can Psions with the Transposition Discipline, "Flicker Step
On your turn, you can replace your movement by teleporting 5 feet in any direction to a space you can see.
Love this guy, the only d&d RUclips content creator that ever responded to me in a comment. I laid off the DND vids for a while and, ah man, I've missed your stuff for sure. Thanks for all your hard work.
everyone forgets tortle can ready their shell defense action to retract if something comes flying at their head. isnt ideal as a reaction but it works if you remember to use it and can be more useful than dodge or uncanny if you are sneaking around dungeons or swarms popping out.
Bugbears + astral self monks = 15 foot grapples RAW.
allright here it is, a damphir build if yall want to give the Bite a Try
the Omnivamp build
12 13 14 8 10 15
first we go hexblade for 5 levels so we can slap pact of the blade and thirsting blade on our bite (because it counts as a simple weapon)
hexblades curse helps so we can add more piercing damage on our bite = more healing
for invocations we go thirsting blade ab and mask o many faces
then we go dss for at least 4 levels to get some sweet metamagic and our second asi to max cha, because if we dont go this way our damage will fall off later
and finally we go 3 levels battlemaster so we get sweeping attack and bite 2 people, adding a d8 for more healing on empowered bite
with this you heal 14 or 28 hp if you cleave, its basically another health bar at that point
Do you really need pact of the blade? I think it may fall under the normal class features. This way you could go with pact of the chain and the invocation maxes healing and maybe pick extra attack somewhere else. (Obvious pick would of course be battle master)
Which sorcerer subclass are you referring to with dss?
@@woutvanostaden1299 the reason we go pact of the blade is to have magic damage with our bite
and dss means divine soul sorcerer, so we get spirit guards + sword and quickens
if you want more heal use second wind and cast aid
Quick note: when DnD shorts was speaking about kobolds he was referring to the unearthed arcana version
Respecting the gnomes is how you know DnD Shorts is legit.
