We lived on 10 acres for 25 years and every year I made blackberry jelly from our field. They grew like weeds and even though it was mowed several times a year, We let it grow once we saw the flowers on the blackberries. I had tons of jelly made just as you do and I also disliked the seeds which is why I just made jelly (strained through cheese cloth. We had so many it didn't matter that we could have made more if it were jam. I WISH I had thought to freeze them in the summer when it was so hot that making the jelly was hard work after picked batches in the morning. What a wonderful way to do it, just freeze then thaw and squish, then can. Such a good strategy and thanks for making this video. I think your potato machine worked so well! I used to grow and put up 100 tomato plants every summer. I also just learned that some people wash them and put them in the freezer whole. When thawing them, the skins peel off and sauce is almost done. Easy squeezy.

If you don’t have a rack for the bottom of your pan you can place some jar rings on the bottom of the pan for your jars to sit on. I’ve used this trick a couple of times. Works well for me. 🙂👍🏻

A folded newspaper or even a tea towel works too. Anything to stop the glass making contact with the metal of the base. That way there's no danger of the glass cracking from overheating. I think it's a bigger danger with electric stoves especially the ones with the metal spiral eyes.

I love making jam. Made lots of jam, but I use Pomona's Pectin. With Pomona's you can make as large a batch as you can cook. I'd fill my large water bath canner with as many pints as would fit. The pectin doesn't go bad if you don't use it promptly and it is also low sugar. Marvelous stuff. Sour cherry jam is our family favorite. It's like eating cherry pie. Yum!

Omgoodness Sarah, we have become such a tight net family that what I was thinking was evidently what a few others thought. I only watched you about 4 minutes and I immediately said to myself she doesn't feel good I don't think. Your smile wasn't quite the same. We love you and care about you. The whole time I was thinking, how does she do everything she does on a daily basis. She must get so tired. I hope you feel better soon or get some rest. Lol

My mother (I'm 73) used a kitchen towel in the bottom of her pot so the jars didn't set directly on the bottom. She never lost a jar. She also never had a pressure canner and used her water bath canner to can everything. We never had any bad effects from this. She raised 5 children this way. Love your channel.

When my husband and I bought his family farm my Mother In Law taught me how to make wild black raspberry jelly. This was back in 1996. She helped me the first few years until I felt I could do it myself. She loved picking berries. She was the fastest picker I ever saw. She would picked berries by the ice cream pail full. She now has advanced Alzheimers and it gets a little sad thinking about her not being able to do the things she loved most. Gardening, canning and picking strawberries and wild black raspberries. I have her Ball canning book she wrote notes by recipes on how she did it. Dates she did the recipe etc. she taught me everything about canning. Her Mother In Law taught her. Maybe some day I'll be able to do the same if I ever get a Daughter In Law.

Not trying to nit pick, just a suggestion, that you sit the hot jars on a towel instead of the counter top, because if the counter is cold, the jar can break (when you are filling them up). Love your channel, and especially your canning videos since I enjoy canning also!

I was thinking that you seemed a little out of sorts too. We all love you both so much and I am sure you are working hard. I even know that taking us along with your day is hard work. All of the editing etc.. You Sarah have the most beautiful smile and dimples. The two of you together really brighten the day of so many of us. If you need to take a break you do it..We can handle it...And yes those delicious wild black berries are so delicious. We did have to do some major clearing when I was a child in order for our family to be able to even get in our back door. My mom lived in my childhood home till she died. She had blackberries completely cover a tree that she had out back and that made more berries than she could use.. You are both wonderful teachers. The picture that accompanies this needs to be changed . My baby who is now in her mid forties took that picture of me the other day and then removed the wrinkles and put makeup on me... I think she is having a hard time seeing her mama get old . I did too with my mom .. We are and were mama's girls in a big way. We all three not only loved each other but liked each other and that was huge...

If you put the pulp in a stainless pot and add water an inch above, bring to a boil. Let the mix stand for about 30 minutes or so, strain & add your favorite sweetener to taste. Home made juice and even more use of the berry.
    Your jam looked amazing.

We have Chester Thornless blackberries planted. We got our starts from my in-laws in Missouri. They used to have a you pick farm. The berries were developed in MO. Absolutely LOVE them and of course the picking is easy. Used to have thornless raspberries, too. They were delicious as well. We would go to the farmer’s market and sell out headed home by 10 a.m. Sarah, if you’re just wanting to make jelly, I use my juicer. It works great and to separate the seeds from the pulp I put it through cheese cloth. Wonderful jam without seeds. 😃

Yes, It's a shame about the seeds, but I think that by using that red gadget you lose a lot of the fruit. What I do when I want to do seedless jam is to cook the berries a bit until the juices are released and then strain it, that way there is much less waste. Love your videos! Regards.

I also noticed you were not quite yourself during this presentation. This time of year we all feel down just a little so am glad that is all it is. Possibly you just need a date night to break up the routine. I love wild black raspberries. I prefer them fresh and pick a lot of them when I can. My wife does the canning of the jelly and does very much like you do except she uses a cloth to strain out the juice and for jelly that works very well. Most times each time we travel to Kansas to visit our daughter and family we have a cooler full of frozen raspberries so she and my wife can make jelly together. Here in PA the raspberries can be prolific and a friend and I have a secret spot just full of raspberries which we call our Honey Hole. I generally pick about a gallon each time and have a few bowls of fresh berries with sugar and milk or half and half. yum

Wanted to share with you a big thank you! I just recently saw your putting up your garden spinach and making serving size portions. Since I am elderly and live alone, this is great. I had just bought a big tub of spinach and made it in individual portions, froze them and then bagged them for the freezer. Then I thought, I could do that with all kinds of things, like just started ricing cauliflower and it would really be good for this method. Now, I am going to do that method with anything that works with it, instead of using so many plastic bags. And, I have these snap lock lasagna size glass containers and they are perfect for putting all of your serving sizes in. Thank you!

I live in BC canada and in a Doukabour community, my sister in law gave me a russian "ouctar"(nectar) recipe that her Russian grandmother used for high seed berries such as raspberries. I love berries and not the seeds so I make this regular....I'm thinking the left over skin/seeds you could use to flavored it as well. Might be worth a try!
Recipe: in a large pot combine
    15 cups water
    1 cup of berries
Soon as it boils turn off heat and allow to cool to room temp. Strain to remove berries and seeds
Add 1 cup of sweetener ( more or less to taste) place in refrigerator to cool completely. That's it !

Dear Sarah, whilst researching tomato purée from that AMAZING machine, I came across a lady who advised drying the skin& seed mix that was left over. She then whizzed it in a processor to a powder. It gave a very strong Tomato tasting powder for cooking. I wonder if you could do the same with the Raspberry paste left over? By the way, my tomato sauce machine arrived two weeks ago. I was so excited. It’s a fantastic machine. Thanks for another great, informative video 😊😁☺️

Thanks for sharing, You can use the leaves for tea.... great for cramps in the stomach. I have several mulberry's and I do not like the seeds. Next year I will be making jam out of them. Thanks again for all your hard work. PS. Canning jars are coming into the stores now... go and get them guys.

I have looked through a few videos trying to feel comfortable with a recipe for jam. I want JAM! Not jelly, not gummie bears, not syrup....just jam. And I did not know about the low sugar Sure Jell. I am doing this on black, seedless grapes and pray the work is not wasted. And forgive me for laughing...you were a little subdued today and everyone freaks out!! (me included) Yet it makes me feel good that soooo many people are concerned about you guys. Thanks again for a good recipe. Jesus bless.

The seeds are why I make jelly instead of jam. I don't mind the seeds much myself but don't like them in my jelly.

I am so glad to see how you canned these. I have a glass cooktop stove and never canned on it due to regular caners being too large and coated in ceramic, which is a no no per instrux for the stove. I'll have to give this a try now. I was looking everywhere for an insert for smaller pots, like a stock pot but never found one. Now there is a product to make!
