    Ever wonder 'what is a receiving blanket?" A receiving blanket often gets confused with a swaddling blanket. The swaddle is usually larger in size (47 x 47 inches), while the receiving blanket is usually used for newborns and measures 30 x 30 inches.This method will work for either size! Make a baby blanket that best serves the baby you'll be giving it to.

    I'm happy with the one I made and will start a second one. Very fun to make and cute. The piecing and rounded corners make it more interesting than just flapping two pieces of flannel together. Thank you.

    I like to make these with cute child-themed flannel fabrics. For one blanket I used a blue and yellow rubber ducky theme, and for another, I used zoo animal fabrics.

    Hi Kimberly, :) I just completed the baby blanket made from this tutorial. I made changes because I wanted mine to be wider and longer so I did 8" squares in 5 baby prints, all flannel with an adorable animal ark flannel backside. I quilted some fancy stitches about 5 inches apart to it for a good hold and finished it off with a decorative edging stitch. it really came out so so adorable and perfect for a little boy I'm giving it too! Thank you for sharing! :)

My mum still keeps my baby quilted blanket made for me and gifted to her when I was born 28 years ago! I'm going to try making this for a friend who's having a baby shower in two weeks. When you stitch in the ditch, it means to stitch as close to the seam as possible. The seam will act as your guideline for quilting. Thanks for watching!

    This may be a Silly question, but when you stich in the ditch, does the stitch show on 5h back.and what size stitch would I use,for the ditch

    • @FatQuarterShopTX
      @FatQuarterShopTX  9 месяцев назад +1

      Hello Josephine! Stitching in the ditch is basically top stitching. It will show on the top and the bottom of the quilt it is just that you are sewing next to the seams so that it is less noticeable. Stitch length is what you want it to be, but since it will not show as much a regular sewing length is fine. You don’t typically want it extra small or large.

      You can certainly use batting, I wouldn't go too thick however. Then flip it out and top stich around it. Should work our perfectly! Enjoy.

      Hello Simply Michee! The backing fabric and batting needs to be a few inches larger than the quilt top to accommodate the shifting that can happen during quilting. Here's a good example on a mini sample: ruclips.net/video/pGiIwd2klEk/видео.html

    I know I'm late to the party and it's a sideways question, but I'm in the UK and it's not a term we use so I just looked up to see what a 'receiving' blanket is. The consensus of opinion is that it's either just a light weight cellular blanket so baby doesn't overheat, in which case most people thought it should just be called a blanket, OR it is muslin squares used for burbing cloths and other slightly messy receiving purposes.
    So in light of my research, why is this pretty quilted piece called a receiving blanket?

    • @lauriepreston4262
      @lauriepreston4262 5 лет назад

      Jacquie, receiving blankets are primarily used for newborns and young infants because they are small, soft and lightweight. When you bring them home from the hospital, you often use a "receiving" blanket; i.e. you are receiving your baby. Of course, they're good for many uses throughout a young child's life.

    A bit hard for a beginner... What's a nesting seam?

    • @FatQuarterShopTX
      @FatQuarterShopTX  4 года назад

      Hello Lah! A nesting seam is when you have two blocks or units that you're joining together and the seams from each one nestle with the other one. Usually they are going in the opposite direction and they snug together.

      Hi Svannah, the iron we are using is the Rowenta Compact Travel Steam Iron and you can find it here: www.fatquartershop.com/compact-travel-steam-iron-by-rowenta-first-class

      I have to get an iron for my sewing station too. A travel size would be perfect...or one that is cheap!

    how do u see them so straight? mine never match.

    • @FatQuarterShopTX
      @FatQuarterShopTX  7 лет назад

      I believe the precision comes from cutting accurately to begin with, having a 1/4" foot with a guide and pinning. If you do those three things, your quilt tops will be more straight and accurate overall.

    Why no batting?

    • @FatQuarterShopTX
      @FatQuarterShopTX  2 года назад +1

      Hello Warrior 4ever! A receiving blanket is a baby quilt that is traditionally gifted to newborns. It's usually very thin with no batting. You are welcome to add batting if you'd like.

    Could you use pre-cuts to make the receiving blanket?

    • @FatQuarterShopTX
      @FatQuarterShopTX  10 лет назад +1

      Hi Jayne!
      This project could very easily be converted to a precut friendly project. The squares for the top measure 7” so you could either use a regular charm pack that measures 5” and make a smaller quilt or add an additional row making it a little larger. Also, Riley Blake now has 7” squares! Feel free to visit our charm pack page for a variety of options!

      Hope this helps, good luck!

    is the baby quilt fabric flannel or cotton

    • @laurenjohnson8702
      @laurenjohnson8702 7 лет назад

      most likely cotton, youre not supposed to iron flannel.

    • @joannsimmons1347
      @joannsimmons1347 6 лет назад +6

      I would probably use a soft flannel. It can be pressed.

    • @SuzetteG316
      @SuzetteG316 5 лет назад +3

      It looks like she used regular cotton fabric, but this would be awesome in flannel fabric too! I do iron flannel, I just iron it from the back, not the front. I have done this for years with no issues. :)
