How Pakistani women are taking the internet back | Nighat Dad

  • TED Fellow Nighat Dad studies online harassment, especially as it relates to patriarchal cultures like the one in her small village in Pakistan. She tells the story of how she set up Pakistan's first cyber harassment helpline, offering support to women who face serious threats online. "Safe access to the internet is access to knowledge, and knowledge is freedom," she says. "When I fight for a woman's digital rights, I am fighting for equality."

    Why only 700 likes. . . And moreover why 599 dislikes. . . ?
Does this somewhere indicate the our resistance to the kind of thoughts provoked in our kinds by Nighat Dad?
Is this how resistant we are to the idea of granting equality and freedom to women. . ?
The presence of 599 dislikes to this talk is disturbing to me. . .
I am from India but what Nighat Dad spoke about here is a grim and chilling reminder of the plight of many women in India, Pakistan and the world over. . .
Thank you, Ms Nighat Dad for this talk. 👏🏻

it's not just that, it's this general mentality that simply pointing out "hey, you know how women in some parts of the world (to say nothing of women in general) don't have it easy?" just summons ridiculous amounts of vitriol from so many people.
Since when was wanting people to have a decent life a political stance and not just human decency?

Women in the west have it easy. Women in other parts, less so. Then again the left will defend those cultures who are actually oppressing women and complain that they themselves are victims. People who pretend to care are the worst.

I'm usually against talks heavily focused on the female agenda but if there's one part of the world where women really go through oppression and struggle it's Pakistan. To all those who are disliking this video because of your personal bias formed by 3rd wave feminism in the west, disassociate those biases from this video and you may find something worth watching (plus, it's so short). Otherwise, just ignore my comment or whatever.

I was honestley suprised The States werent attacked in thes video. That being said, this should be a wake up call for the democratic peoples in America. This issue, along with multiple other civil rights issues that are striped away from Islamic women, (which the left support whole heartedly over Israel) is a bad culture. The extremist Islam culture. which this woman is from, and is also is sooo much worse than the Jewish/Westernized equivalent.
Its not racism/xeonism (or hpwever you call it) its a human rights issue. You don't see this anywhere else man. This are my 2 cents.

Correction, Pakistan has 17.6% internet penetration rate, 2018.. Why isn't there any statistics about her organization (Like how much cases they have resolved, how much voices of women have they forwarded to the supreme court or any other concern departments). there are hundreds of organizations who do remarkable work for women empowerment, couldn't she atleast mention them..

"taking back the Internet" and demanding a "safe" Internet free from harassment is basically ignoring the existence of the ability to block people so that you don't see the things you don't like. There will always be people that harass you and it is your choice which one to block and move on or don't block and scream for a safe internet.
Words are only as bad as you let them be...
The treatment of women in Pakistan and the rest of the Middle East is also not a tech problem but a cultural one which is especially there spearheaded by a certain religion that isn't exactly a fan of equal rights.

I find the message here to be convoluted.
The title, begining and ending of the speech are about cyber bullying, while in-between she talks about women there not being allowed to use a phone, other technology, nor get a higher education. These are different things.
The second seems to be an important issue, but the useful conversation on the topic can not happen, as the way it is presented (with e.g. a talk about "the awful people online") reminds too much about current western SJWs and does not allow the audience to take seriously the message about the underlying issue.
Essentially, she is piggibacking a narrative about meen comments online, on top of stories of Pakistani women being killed.
This, in my opinion, is doing much more harm than good and making me question her motives.

    • @auh786
      @auh786 5 лет назад +1

The talk was about "taking back the Internet" which beings with access to the internet in the first place. I think the narrative was just fine.

For everyone saying "this isn't standard SJW feminist crap, women in Pakistan are genuinely oppressed", keep in mind that they're oppressed by their culture, not online comments, and conflating the actual oppression of Pakistani women with western feminist talking points to smuggle them in, serves to benefit the feminist agenda at the expense of awareness of real women's suffering, and should be resisted.

cherynoimout if you aren’t a Pakistani you have no idea what you are talking about. Trust me. I’m Pakistani and also from Punjab. Not even my far cousins who actually live in villages do that. So sorry to say I don’t agree with you. And don’t just say anything without research.

Muaz Nabil I'm also Pakistani. She's not a minority. Don't just "say anything" without your own research when you're not a woman and you don't have any experience to speak of.

I'll grant you that social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter are instrumental in the advertisement of groups, organisations and businesses. Google is still the biggest search engine on the Internet with RUclips (where you can happily browse and interact with content anonymously) coming in second.

Women in pakistan feel so safe and they have the world best families. proudly they take education and knowledge and also take place in politics, in all activities and take part a good roles in society because of Islam.

    A controversial view:
I grew up in Europe, with the values and norms from middle east AND the West. I agree that honour killing is NOT the way. However, if a woman is in a country where there are consequences to certain actions, she consiencely chooses to keep talking to strange men, she should not act surprised. HOW GOOD or BAD the norms and values are in those countries, those are the current (unwritten) rules, abiding is the best way (although as a westerner those rules may be extreme, it is how it is in those countries, it is 'their household', I suppose you dont get to meddle with it).
Also, the ted talk makes it seem that Pakistan is ALL ABOUT honour killing and how bad Pakistan is. This is NOT true!
disclaimer: I AM NO pakistani, but i see simmilarities with my own culture and living in Europe provides me the insight from both worlds

It happens even more often with women and over non-aggressive stuff. Plus men don't have any harsh gendered slurs, or get as many rape threats

    • @jeffmilligan
      @jeffmilligan 6 лет назад

Huh, men don't have any harsh gender slurs? There are far more for men than there are for women. And statistically men receive more abuse than women online. And most "rape threats" are trolls, and not to be taken seriously at all, and in fact, are often made by other women.

what exactly does having a website to report alleged internet "abusers"? Do you actually believe the state or the police force will take her seriously? This website is hardly a step forward for a country that does not value individual freedom or secularism. Second she is espousing a typical Rad Fem. talking point; that women are the only victims of internet vitriol.

If you feel that insecure about the flaws in your country that you have to say this, how about working to fix those and make it so there's only positives and talks like this aren't needed?
