It's crazy how something really good can be shown to the world by an authentic and passionate source (Bungie) and all the people who want to piggy back off of their success simultaneously ridicule and implicitly belittle it with their own "improved" takes
most fans are at the "Halo is dead" stage and have moved on years ago. 343 has been butchering the corpse for more than a decade

I just find it hilarious that the show is what finally got people's attention and to get everyone riled up. Like guys, they've been doing this for the passed 12 years, where have you been? I'm with Wolf on this one, I just cannot summon the energy to give a shit anymore about yet more Halo butchering. Add it to the pile. At least this one isn't even canon, Chief and Cortana wanting to fuck is canon though.

Remember in season 1 they thought using Star Trek Discovery Season 3 uniforms was a good idea for the UNSC. A small detail but one that shows they hate the source material.

Yes, most 'adaptions' do hate the source, its why they always insert some random nonsense as the story rather than...the story. Hence it superficially resembles the property, but you get things like black elves and retarded UNSC
The prop departments tend to work really hard though. Less so in Rings of Power.
UNSC uniforms are based on those in Star Trek Discovery and the Spartans are horribly written.

I remember years ago when I would get excited by the idea of adaptations. But now ever announcement has become "Hey! Do you kids like Sly Cooper? Well great! We are making a Sly Cooper movie. But it is all about Carmelita. She will be an insufferable girl boss. And Sly will be a lame loser that gets nothing done. And Murray will be evil. And Bentley will be trans. And we will not even mention Clockwerk. And we are making it for a 'modern audience.' And it will look horrible. And the plot will be nonsense. Why is everybody hating this? You are all bigots!" Not a Halo fan, but I can tell this show has the look, the feel, and the sound of something that just feels like they made it just to disregard anything that made people love the IP in the first place. History seems to repeat itself with this one.
They do have the aliens looking the part however humanity is the underdog the first game takes part practically over and Earth is all that is left.
Humanity is the underdog in all the games, they only seem to be not as much of an underdog once the Covenant in fight with the Elites losing an big part of their army to side with Chief and UNSC.
Also Earth isn’t the only one left, Earth is basically kept secret from the covenant they just found it by accident by trying to find the ark, not expecting humanity to both live there AND be the home world of their enemy

@@rontheauraknight9606 No, Earth is definitely one of the last planets, if not the last planet humanity has left. Lord Hood literally says "Earth, it's all we have left." to Chief in Halo 3 lol. Even God-awful Halo 4 recognized that, since the Infinity was built to be the UNSC's mobile HQ in the event Earth fell.
A major recurring theme of EFAP is that the work of thousands of VFX guys and actors, sound people, etc. can be annihilated by one bad writer.
This show is like a perfect microcosm of that.
The great tragedy is that loyal fans who want to create accurate, well intentioned shows for their favorite IPs will be struck down by copyright claims. Those with exclusive access have no intention to respect the unique gift they’re given.
Perhaps it truly is through creating separate universes that we can save the old properties from themselves.
Yeah.. nothing so great or artistically amazing has ever come from a huge organization. Bungie was a small company for instance and they only kept Halo what it was with MS in the mix because they pushed back so hard

Forward onto dawn did halo way better than the tv show. Even the actor who plays cheif never took his helmet off and the voice actor was not the og voice but he did a amazing job as chief.
They did amazing for a smaller budget TV show.
Cortana looked great, too. Forward Unto Dawn was great.
I'm positive that during the run-up to Halo 4 being released, 343 did interviews with games websites and magazines about how they specifically hired people who didn't like the Halo trilogy to make 4. I remember thinking it was an odd move back then, but they framed it as, "we wanted to get an outsider's perspective in order to make a game that better appealed to a wider audience." It just seems like the people in charge of Halo have hated Halo for years now. It would be subversive to let people who respect, or God forbid, *like*, Halo make a new game or show or movie or book or whatever.
They deliberately tried to make 4 more like COD since it had replaced Halo as the biggest FPS at the time and it completely backfired

The Battle rifle canonically is a select fire weapon, which means it can be fired in full auto, single shot or burst. Even in the Halo Landfall trailers it is seen firing in full auto, so its not technically incorrect. It being burst fire in game was for gameplay balance.
We're definitely still in the era of video game adaptations being embarrassed of what they are. They're just more profitable now. The quality is still shit across the board.
The only difference is they’re starting to resemble the IP visually, but that’s really it. You don’t even get the luxury of having music from it, it’s hackneyed music from half a century ago.

@@vorbo01 That's ONE case vs at least 10 flops. It's the same as saying manga/anime live action adaptations are very profitable just because One Piece tv show was, ignoring the other 5+ failures of other series in the past.
The difference with Mario and OnePiece is that the IP owners (Nintendo and Oda respectively) have made a contract that forces the chinese subversives to obey their will.

Nah, this habit is brand new. If it was the old habits this show would've been made for kids. It's not that they don't take Halo seriously, they do, and they hate the series. They hate the idea humanity unifying against a high ideal while not caring much about humanity's own politics. They love progress, no matter its direction, and detest reactionaries, no matter what they're reacting to.
Hates the games, hates the fans, hates good writing etc etc etc.
Deliver Hope and We Are ODST were short live action videos but had more passion than the entire halo TV series combined. Also the TV show bastardised the Spartan 3s. Absolute trash.
24:45 this part is always what bothered me about the direction 343 took the narrative in. The human-covenant war lasted a little over 27 years, with every single Bungie game taking place over the course of the final few months of the war. 343 were handed this book with 25 years of history, but only the last 2 pages filled in, took one look at it, and thought "I know! Let's staple several more pages on after the ending! We're so smart!"
I would have been fine with that approach if 343 nailed down Halo 4, since that was an important step to set up future events properly.
Other than Halo Wars 1, I am still amazed by the massive missed potential 343 could very easily use but choose to do nothing.
Counterpoint: I'm sick of prequels. The next game should've been playing as the arbiter uniting the elites and overthrowing the covenant. Then a game of marines surviving against flood in Africa before the elites complete their glassing protocol. Then a game of an oni spook, locke, trying to find Halsey and chief after they are lost post halo 3. A spinoff game of the Arbiter who crushed the grunt rebellion. A game where you play as innies doing deals with kigyar before and after the human covenant War, then Finally you move the story forward.
I think a good way of putting it is that so many companies/writers are wearing IPs like a skin suit to push their own stupid ideas. They don't really understand anything. Nor do they even look at the source material. It's maddening.

The best summary I heard about Arcane was that it worked because it’s a decent story with fantastic animation and most league players don’t care about the lore in the first place so retcons don’t matter to them.
Legue's lore has always been in a state of flux and was seen as a meme by most. The game is completely detached from the "lore"

Halo used to be the king of the bro games, no one seemed to care about anything but the multiplayer. This level of disrespect for the game's storytelling was unwarranted then and its unwarranted now.
I'd rather have a lame story that respects its audience over a good story that hates its audience. I 100% understand if you don't have this preference but more good shows will arise from people who love the lore than from people who hate it.

They don't understand that the people making the shows are too narcisistic to accept making someone else's story, and this is why all such projects have never been accurate to the source, and suffered mostly failure

The only thing I remember about Halo is that it was one of the only games where my older brother and I both bonded while playing.
This seems to be a common trend among these types of shows. Even if one of them does end up as a decent adaptation the people making them clearly look down the games and consider them “lesser” than the shit they’re making.
The one thing I give credit to the Halo show for is the Spartan Outfits. Those look good. Everything else was done piss poor.
I’m so glad movies like Sonic the Hedgehog and the Mario movie exist. Because they are proof that Hollywood doesn’t need to be ashamed of the source material when making video game movies.

As stated, we were already exploring the dichotomy between Spartans as a weapon to be used and discarded, vs. being a person, human being.
Like. John Halo used to be a cyborg. Like a Cy-Borg. Alex Murphy in this bitch, and that was a wonderful foundation of context.
Context that enriched the core theme of the series as a whole.
Humanity. People.
The Marines are people, buck and his team are people, Noble Team were people, Captain Keys 🔑, the Arbiter, and the Sangheili are people. They all expressed themselves in a real empathetic way.
They all express their thoughts, concerns, and fears.
But then you have the three Unstoppable superheroes. Master Chief Cortana and Sergeant Major.
They feel like nuclear bombs rather than people.
Contextually sergeant majors death marks the death of Master chief's humanity. Even though Johnson gives him a lesson to hold dear the ones you love, Chief rejects that lesson, Refusing to open up to Cortana immediately after Johnsons death and giving her the cold shoulder just before going into cryosleep. Leaving Cortana with unresolved emotions. Battling with her own existence.
Halo: Silent Storm by Troy Dennings is fantastic. Set during year one of the Covenant war and it’s a great into to the world. Since it’s year one the characters don’t know what anything is so they naturally talk about these weird split jaw aliens in a way that fits within the story. Check it out if you want to get into the books it’s got (almost) every Spartan II, ODSTs, Johnson and a damn good understanding of military structure.
They could have had an interesting human angle to the Halo show - especially considering the covert operations of UNSC, ONI, ODST, etc. which have room to explore how “ordinary” people view the Covenant, the conflict and the relationship to other human colonies.
A show about specific characters (Sgt. Johnson, as an example) may also have been interesting. But their human characters include Kwan Ha (there cannot be a single person who wants her in the story as a whole) and Ma-kee (again, why? Human raised in covenant could be interesting but they executed it horribly)
This show is vaguely Halo, if only for the occasional aesthetic. It resembles nothing from the source material, as is standard for these games. They use the “alternate timeline” so much that they ought to have made a new IP rather than harm one that is already beaten down by 343i’s incompetence.
This is where the line must be drawn: the Schlurpophobia ends now.
Halo and 343 are basically trying to overcompensate for who they are by trying to sound deep and epic when they were fine the way they were.
Halo was about an ai who is more human than the humanoid soldier who opens up a bit. He was sort of a superhero who relied on every soldier he fought with like early captain america.
Sadly now, Halo is a clone of expanse. Its a lifeless husk wearing halos armor. Its stolen gamer valor.
At this point I think there are more scenes with plot holes than ones without. Cause and effect goes out the window when the writers just make contrived excuses to reach the next cliche or 'iconic' moment.
It gets to the point where you can predict stuff that happens, even if there's no logical reason for something to happen, just because it's the sort of event that would echo better shows.
Its not halo, but even with a new IP, it's just not good. The writers basically wanted it to be The Expanse, so skip the middle man and just watch The Expanse instead.

I don't know how people can say that when the big hook for Season 2 is a shot of New Vegas, put there explicitly because they know the fandom adores New Vegas.
Even what they did to the NCR makes sense from the perspective of a failing nation that lost the Mojave.

My main issues are the world building and how the factions work or how they were just changed but with big Tod just saying it’s cannon
Not including the Mando plot armour which was funny bad at some points and the brotherhood basically sequel stormtroopers but some have armour that works(apart from when it doesn’t)

There is absolutely no way 1 nuke in the capital would send the world set up by fallout 1,2 or vegas into what we get in the show which is basically fallout 3/4 style world
The Ncr had functioning and sec sufficient towns that were doing their own thing pre ncr with farmers and ranchers everywhere or places that set up their own states before being absorbed
If anything I’d just dissolve the Ncr into smaller factions Macedonian empire style rather than having it just turn into fallout 3

@jungoder1085 as far as I'm aware, we never go past the Boneyard in this show. I could be wrong, as they never show a map, but this show only shows a very, very small part of the total land the NCR controls or controlled.

EFAP was all about "adaptation is it's own thing" when it comes to Spider-Man but here, it's the opposite.
Seems to be like a bit of the "it doesn't matter as long as I like it" philosophy.
100% they have shown how they have favorites, just like everyone else. For all their attempts at objectivity, the game adaptions for film or tv, and even their game reviews, are so nitpicky. As well as this 180° on comparing to the source--which was maintained for LOTR.
I think they would justify it with "we didn't grow up with books and comics, but we grew up with video games." It's obvious that they are gatekeeping video game bc is media they care about.
Thing is, Spiderman has like 10 different canons (slight exaggeration, but still), so as long as it retains the character's personality and the villains stay well written, it hardly matters. For example, the MCU from almost the beginning changed elements of the lore and characters to fit a smaller cast of avaibable characters and other stuff (example, Civil War, it retains the general idea but it's a waaaay smaller conflict).
Halo, on the other hand, only has 1 canon, so it has no excuse, specially with the shit they're feeding us to replace it. So yeah, different things get different standards

i would hope that the stance is that the adaptation is judged on its own merits. if it is good then it is good regardless of faithfulness, and that if it is bad, the original exists only as a comparison point for how it could have been done better

Seeing the trailer for Season 2, the only thing I remember about it was that they tried to play the Halo theme- on what seemed to be a kazoo.

I'm so sick and tired of these youtubers defending every little stupid decision that 343 makes Act man, Hidden Xperia, and etc. They always give them a chance when i personally can't anymore . If i had the following they had i would tell people not to buy anymore of 343's garbage. It's actually criminal and what 343 does is the definition of gaslighting a fanbase. They always tell it was always this way or that way. The youtubers tell us to either wait for the game to be how you want it or not buy the game. How about 343 makes an actual reboot that takes place after halo 3 and they actually do the research on the old Bungie lore. Or just like with what happened with marathon just give bungie back the rights to halo. I'm at the point where i think literally anyone else could and would do a better job than 343 i have 0 faith they can come through and make a good sequel without worrying more about money. Literally anyone else could make a better sequel. Even fans can and have shown they can make a better game. Branching sickness is a horror game, chrion maze is a mod for halo 1 which is horror, Ringworld alpha, and etc. all fan made games all look good all of them actually look like passion was there. When you love your fans and your own creation and your happy with it anything can happen that's why narratively in all of bungies games they give you absolute power and let you project your personality on all of their silent protagonists. They were literally hired for that purpose. Then you look at the fallout tv show a show made for the fans. Crazy idea to just make a show about your game. Instead of giving actors and actresses roles because nobody has has ever heard of them how about you give good talented actors that love and respect the source material idk LIKE THE PEOPLE WHO VOICE ACT IN THEIR GAMES LIKE IDK THE WHOLE CAST OF THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY. They just need to reboot everything back to after halo 3 if they did that then they would actually make money. 343 and a lot of other companies don't understand the paradox they are all in. They are so worried about making money that they make less money because they put in all the "modern" amenities like battle passes and item shops. When halo never should have micro transactions. Because halo doesn't need them to succeed the game just needs to be halo. No aiming classic legacy controls, small maps for slayer, big maps for btb, plenty of cover for both styles of play and both sides of the map need to be identical. verticality, and etc. i'm 20 years old and i know how to make a halo game why can't 343 that's how you know they need to be replaced
I wish we got a tv show about a young dude signing up to fight insurrectionists and then getting dropped into the human-covenant war after a few episodes so we get the whole rest of the season just him and his buddies getting chewed up and spat out with defeat after defeat, second season he can be the grizzled vet keeping the squad alive as the UNSC starts trying to fight harder on the ground but they still end up retreating from planets in the nick of time b4 the space battle is doomed etc etc, would be cool.

Unpopular opinion, but most video game adaptations are bad because most video game stories are bad.
When Sony makes a game that's basically already a 20 hour long movie, it's not improved by chopping it down to 2.
Halo needs to become what mainline metroid games are, long breaks between mainline releases that further refine, twist and improve what previous titles had. Meanwhile experimental games coming out that further deviate and find something that hits.

You make seven core HALO games, the main story transitions from Chief and Humanity's fight against the covenant to Chief and Arbiter working to destroy the rings because mass extinction isn't the answer, ultimately shifting the story to one of survival against the Flood and Forerunner, both of which seek the destruction of organic life through different means. During all this you have the "regional conflict" games of Reach, ODST, possibly even a Covenant only game dealing with the Elites apparent fall from grace and their struggle to regain a position of significance in the covenant and convince them to turn away from worship of the Rings.

It's sad some people think that the fallout show did fallout better than the halo show did halo. Both are absolute garbage. If you only like Bethesda Fallout, the horribly written games, then maybe the show is okay for you. But you have terrible standards anyway so enjoy your hot garbage I suppose.

The difference between Fallout and Halo is easy enough. I can believe what happened in Fallout, is actually part of the lore, even if the lore has been fucked / retconned since Bethesda bought it. Would I prefer Fallout 1, 2 and NV be the standard? Yes. Is it going to happen? No. It was entertaining enough despite the flaws of it, which is more than I can say for Halo.

To say theres not much interest in bringing it back is pure nonsense and outright misjudgement of the fanbase with how adamant and uproarious they were with the halo tv series and halo inf inite, it shows just how passionate and angry we all are. We don't want Halo to die, we don't want it to fade away. We dono't want to abandon it and just remember the good times. We want mroe halo and we want it done well. It's a complete oversimplification and underestimation of the Halo fans.

I need that Fallout TV show breakdown, boys. The amount of undeserved praise this show is getting from the usual suspects (and a few that aren't) is getting too bad to ignore. I need to vent my frustrations of this mid-at-best show. Who knows, maybe MauLer, Rags, of Fringy won't be as negative with the show as me, but I just need that space. It's insulting how much flaws it has and yet it still gets positive reviews across the board.

Surprised Fringy didn’t like the first episode of Fallout. Don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty of wacky, dumb shit in that series (like how they absolutely massacred my boy House), but the first episode seemed pretty solid.

Generally most of them are bad with the rare exception such as envoy and silent storm(it was good but not great though, definitely could’ve been better).

The world doesn't feel as dangerous as you'd expect.
Radiation is basically just a plot device. It rarely plays a role in the world. (Likely because the radiation has gone down quite a bit)
Raiders are almost non-existent on the surface.
The ending also isn't great.
I think the hype is keeping the show above water for now. Mostly because it's not a bad show.
But, over time the flaws will become clearer.

I've played all the Halo games except for Infinity which I have zero interest in,and I'm sorry. The games are fine but they were never amazing . I was 32 back when Halo came out and the games were fun but sorry,they never stood out to me. I never liked Bungies gameplay and the gameplay at least was the best in Halo 5. It was smooth and played well. The old clunky gameplay of the original games never hooked me. Frankly I was more impressed with the first 3 Gears of War games than I ever was with Halo. And I'd still rather play Doom than Halo.
The music is good but the best? Not even close. Shenmue,some of the Final Fantasy games,Xenosaga 1,Panzer Dragoon Saga,a lot of Motion Sakuraba's music, Onimusha and some of the Dragon Quest games all have better music. But Halo is pretty dead now so it really doesn't matter. But Gears is dead after the terrible 5th game so both these franchises are probably past their time.

lol, 99 percent of video games don't warrant a move, let alone a tv series. HALO would work for a movie, but not for a series. Master Chief has little to no personality lol. He's not Wang from Shadow Warrior or even Duke Nukem lol. He's literally just a cyborg. That's what bungie said he was during HALO CE and HALO 2 era, it was only in HALO 3 onwards that the "Spartan Program" was a human super solider program. In CE he is literally called a cyborg in the official game guide from Prima, and Joseph Staten (lead writer of HALO CE and 2) said he was a cyborg lol.
This is stuff from the early 2000s, so if you weren't around and a real CE fan back in the real glory days of Xbox and HALO you might not know about this. Because now, Bungie, 343, Moneysoft pretend that Master Chief was always a human and the "Spartan Program" was always intended or around from the start, when it wasn't. It simply wasn't. He was a cyborg during the real prime days of HALO. It was only in Fall of Reach novels and First strike that the you learned Master Chief wasn't just a cyborg but actually a human, super human, but human. But in the games you didn't learn this until HALO 3 lol. You had to have read the books or talked to someone who read them tell you he's a human not a cyborg. Cause in HALO CE and HALO 2 he's just an unstoppable Alien killing machine. That's all.
So again, the OG halo, the real Halo. Chief is just a killing machine. A cyborg that fucks up the covenant and prevents the firing off the ring. HALO CE and even 2, are incredibly simple plots. Does that warrant a tv series.... I don't think so. A movie, maybe. But a fucking tv show with dozens and dozens of episdoes..... Naw.
You're absolutely right about Master Chief being a poor choice for protagonist. Should have been about Sergeant Johnson and normal marines. Chief works better as a self insert for the player than anything else. However fan reactions in the past have probably made that seem like a bad idea, or they simply want the iconic character despite it being the worst choice.
Also it isn't really debatable if Master Chief was human. Cyborg means augmented human, he could have been so augmented that he lost his humanity however. Definitely wasn't just a robot he gets mistaken as a Forerunner and the taking off the helmet in the longsword doesn't make sense if he was just a robot.
I don’t know much about Halo, but the easiest workaround I would think, would be do something like ODST where it’s a band of random fighters, and MC and Cortana show up once in a while as background characters. Because MC is basically a silent protagonist, which lends well great for a game, but terrible for a show because there’s nothing to connect with. In a game, you don’t necessarily have to “connect” with a character, because you can always default back to your actions represent you. But that requires some thought and not just keyjangling, which they were never going to avoid. That’s all these “adaptations” have, and unfortunately, some people eat it up.
FYI "cyborg" just means biological organism with cybernetic enhancements, it does not imply a personality or lack of it. As long as the brain is not tampered with, it wouldn't change the existing personality. In the case of MC, there is no such bs like the "emotional regulator" that is in the show, he is just an elite trained soldier with cybernetic enhancements. Similar to say a Warhammer 40k Space Marine.
As others have said, a cyborg is not a robot; it's a human with enhancements by implants whether brain or limb - often specifically referring to heavy visible augmentation. However, literal every human character is a cyborg to greater or lesser degrees in the UNSC. The apparently baseline human characters like Keyes qualify as cyborgs due to the implanted CNI transponder that allows them to connect to UNSC tech and augment their mental abilities. This even applies to the basic marines with the chips in the back of their skulls mainly serving for basic FOF identification. This has been the case since the very first game and the book before that and was never retconned out. The Fall of Reach book explicitly outlines how the Spartans and other sailors are cyborgs and they are all still entirely human personality-wise beyond John-117 possibly losing the ability/desire to "keep it up" due to a side-effect of one of the surgeries.

Adaptations unless they're of books are pointless to me, if the source was already visual I don't get any point in remaking it in live-action other than to please people that are against animation or video games which is unfortunately a lot of people.
My dad used to be the same, he would hardly consider animated shows/movies as worth his time but as he got more and more bored/angry over the tidal wave of crap western shows he actually started watching the more adult oriented anime and enjoyed them like Vinland Saga.
I for one have watched anime and played games all my life and don't see any appeal in these remakes/adaptations, never have, never will. None have been good adaptations, and whether they're good on their own is irrelevant to me as the source is still there so I'll never watch a bargain bin knock off, the only exceptions to me would be shows like Arcane or Cyberpunk Edgerunners because those are not straight adaptations of the games, they're set in the games universe but they are not a replacement.
