I think about this show in contrast to Samus Returns for the 3DS. Specifically, when Samus meets the Baby. When that hatches, Samus immediately charges her cannon and aims at it... but holds her fire as she watches it happily float around her. We get no shots of her actual face, but one of her Prime HUD as she stares at this chirping lil guy.
And then, having encountered the singular creature on the planet that DIDN'T show any sign of hostility... she turns off her cannon, lowers it, and holds out her hand. And watches the Baby hover over it, chirping in delight, before they make their way out of the caves together.
A one minute scene with infinitely more compelling writing than this show, and you don't hear a WORD of dialogue.

To a fool, subtlety looks like absence. This is why people used to think Master Chief had no character. The silver lining of the Halo TV show is that it highlighted how much of a character Master Chief has by showing us how much harm the inversion of his character does to a story.

    • @Cyberguy64

And conversely, the scene in Dread where Samus enters a room that huge roars has been coming from. She comes in with her gun raised and ready, only to lower it and go into a relaxed stance as the camera turns and we see Kraid, massive, dangerous, and glaring daggers at her from his three eyes. She doesn't even flinch as he roars at her. She casually charges her gun as he's bellowing in her face and pops him in his mouth. She doesn't even brace herself for the shot. She has absolutely no respect for the giant lizard, and even he knows it.

Dude gets hit with an armor piercing bullet, and we see all the pain we need in the way his neck clenches. The judge he is fighitng looks just like him, and yet we can tell the difference by the arrogance in his face vs the sternness of Dredd's chin. And we don't even need his expression to know he is thankful when Anderson lifts him up, all it takes is a nod and the fact that he stops ordering her around as much and allows her to lead in her own capacity. The tone of the way he says "Rookie" even changes.

Even amongst most of the recent bad media, this series is particularly disgusting in how incompetently written it is and is a far cry from the series. I mean the fact it has a meme name like Master Cheeks says it all. It makes me so sad that Neil Blomkamp didn’t produce a Halo movie or trilogy. In the right hands, Halo could have shined as an adaptation. But yet again; malicious incompetence strikes again with adaptations. And Hollywood wonders why it’s shrinking. Do better, Hollywood!

Especially if you read the novella Human Weakness Halo 4 actually continues alot of the threads brought up for Cortana there. But there's no reason for Master Chief to be acting how he does there. You can easily compare the scene in Halo 2 where he leaves Cortana behind to die on High Charity vs in Halo 4 where he has to leave her to die, but in the latter he acts like he won't know what to do without her, he gets choked up and seriously depressed. In the former, he accepts it quickly. Even though he definitely cared about her then, Master Chief should not be compromising himself and getting choked up over necessary sacrifices. He went through that as a teenager, by H4 he should be way over it. And yes he does have a chance to save Cortana in Halo 3 but only because she fails to detonate the In Amber Clad because of the Gravemind.

There's a cutscene in Halo 3 that I absolutely love. It's when Chief and Arbiter are coming over the light bridge to where the Prophet of Truth has begun the activation of the rings. As they approach, Chief sees Sgt. Johnson with Miranda Keyes dead in his arms. You see Chief for just a moment, but he's dropped his weapon to his side, and is staring at them both. Arbiter is the one to immediately go up to the platform to deal with the prophet, and Chief stays there for a few seconds, until the Gravemind starts speaking through Truth.
Even in such a short scene, you see that Chief could very well be showing sadness under that helmet, both for Miranda's death and how it's affected Johnson. It's something I didn't even notice for years, until I was replaying them on the Master Chief Collection. Just a tiny bit of characterization that reinforces what the games have already shown plenty of times up to that point. Chief is a human being, and he cares for his fellow soldiers, and for humanity as a whole.

I genuinely don't think you could have made it worse, without explicitly making it "Not Halo" Like yes, you could have Unicorns flying around destroying the world with a single spatula swipe, and while that would be better than this show, it would obviously be "Not Halo" So this show walks the tight rope of making every worst decision possible while keeping the skin of Halo on.

There are SO many ways to express emotion with a helmeted character. Body language, tone of voice, lighting, weather/ambient effects, camera angle, etc.
Case in point: if you accidentally stick a teammate with a plasma grenade in Halo and they turn around and look at you, there is so much emotion to be gleaned from their helmeted face alone.

I feel like Alan Becker is also someone people wanting to portray faceless characters can learn a lot from.
He’s got a strong sense of communication through body language and it’s exemplified exquisitely by his Animation vs. series (particularly Animation vs Minecraft). Despite all the insanity that unfolds during those animated videos, the characters are pretty distinct in terms of their personalities. They have different sets of skills and seeing how each of them solves problems (without a single word of dialogue, btw) is pretty satisfying. The main characters have very simple designs, too. They’re literally just stick figures with different colors and (sometimes) head shapes. I’m so much more invested in what’s happening with them than most characters Hollyweird hijacks or inserts in their shitty stories.

And that's if Paramount doesn't renew it at that time. So MS, 343i and company are practically locked out of the ability to use any sort of non-game media to save the IP because Paramount is the one who says when and what produces while everyone else is at best a consultant.

Unmasking Master Chief tells me that the showrunners would rather rely on the actor's ability to act, than the rest of the crew's abilities:
    - to frame the shot
    - to direct the actor
    - to edit the scene
    - to compose an adequate soundtrack
I may not be a filmmaker, but from various scenes from V for Vendetta and The Mandalorian I can clearly see when the hero is worn down, sad, determined, flippant, focused, aloof, defiant, displeased, satisfied, apprehensive. And the comments sections to clips from each movie/show are filled with people who could relate.

They directly rip off an emotional scene from the Mandalorian where the character sits in a cockpit and ponders going back to save their friend while fidgeting with a relevant object.
Except the halo show has his helmet off the entire time with Pablo overacting while heavyhanded flashbacks play. It actually feels quite condescending because the writers don't seem to think the audience can be trusted to understand subtext or interpret anything for themselves.

I notice especially in the early 2000s a lot of B-tier TV and movies go to great lengths to avoid headwear on characters.
There was a 2006 military drama called “The Unit” and they have entire episodes where the characters are fighting in Afghanistan and they don’t even wear baseball caps.
That’s probably why CSI and shows like it focus on plainclothes detectives instead of like, SWAT. Shows about firemen keep shots with helmets very limited even when they’re at the scene of a fire.
In GOOD media, they’ll usually show it.

In the books, Cortona, while teasing Halsey about her affection for Chief, describes Chief as "Handsome, in a primitive way" (paraphrasing) and serious. Pablo looks like he's only two steps away from crying at any given moment. He does not strike me as someone who's battle-hardened and duty-bound. He comes off as very conflicted and confused. Which is about as wrong as you can get when characterizing Chief on screen.

If you don't understand that, then you shouldn't be in charge of interpreting and adapting the story for a different medium.

I think part of the problem with Chief taking off the mask (apart from actors' wanting their faces shown on TV as much as possible, as is mentioned), is the Two-Screen Phenomenon. A lot of people watching TV today are only half-watching, their eyes are on their phones/tablets and they look up when the change in the background music tells them to. The careful shot composition Jon Graham describes is wasted as long as 50% of the audience isn't looking at the screen 70% of the time. The Kuleshov effect only works if the viewer sees all the images.

I think back to Babysitter in Halo Legends. A lot of the time nothing is conveyed, because CAL doesn't want to. The Spartan doesn't even talk, and the reveal helps you think about why that is. You find out later that CAL is a woman. Before that, you watch the POV character learn to respect her. CAL's team dislike Spartans already, So CAL might have deduced that if they learned she was female before the mission, it would affect their performance and their unit cohesion. Stoicism is heavily underrated...

8:00 I feel like this almost falls under show don't tell. The show runners act as if every emotion must be directly communicated to the audience by seeing the actors face at all times. Chief is sad, so we must have a shot of his sad face. Kai is happy so we must have a shot of her smiling. Think of all the scenes in movies and TV where a character expresses emotion not by showing their face but by doing the opposite. A character walking away without turning to look back at the camera. The action of purposely hiding ones face instead of openly expressing their feelings. SO much can be communicated through actions, context, and juxtaposition and to act like theres no way to do so while a character is wearing a mask is lazy.
