    I just started replaying Halo CE. The Master Chief had a personality. One of his first lines to Cortana is telling a joke about how he didn't enjoy his cryosleeping session because of her driving (chased by covenant group that actually downed the ship 30 minutes later). Ironically, the idea of a fighting man suffering troubles from an emotion inhibitor was done long ago and far better by Equilibrium. @hoos3014 No. He lived in a society that forced everyone to take a drug that suppresses emotion. His training was indicated to be from his late youth/early adulthood, as it was many levels above that of the regular soldiers, bordering on the mystic (a sort of gun-fu). Not quite super soldier, but leaning in that direction.

    The relationship between Chief and Cortana in the games develops into an incredibly complex relationship. Cortana is an AI that was created from mapping the cloned brain of Dr. Halsey. She's a machine that has been built from the ground up as a "Smart AI", one that thinks and feels like a human being. Master Chief is a soldier, abducted and indoctrinated at a young age, and raised in the Spartan program that Dr. Halsey oversaw. Halsey has a maternal relationship with all of her Spartans, John very much included, one that is reciprocal in nature. And Cortana, being an AI clone of Halsey, actually inherits a lot of this relationship. She has a very close relationship where she is almost like a surrogate mother of John's surrogate mother. He treasures her very dearly, in this platonic, motherly way.
    They compliment each other so beautifully. He's a human being who was made to be more like a machine. She was a machine who was made to be more human. They're a beautiful yin and yang.
    There's your emotional core. It's so obvious. And it developed over the course of the games, becoming the focus by Halo 3. It was one of the best bits of chemistry in a game story to ever develop naturally. And if any of these writers, who prided themselves on grasping narrative depth and character work had just played the games, they could have seen what they had. I don't understand why there was no creative director that kept them from making something totally alien to Halo. Pun not intended.

    • @RaikenXion
      @RaikenXion 5 месяцев назад

      Because deep down there has been a agenda here where all these young writers that are hired are basically SJWs and specifically hired because they've NEVER played the original games, and therefore have no knowledge or love for the source material. It's called DEI, originally previously known as "ESG", invented and orchestrated by Larry Fink, the CEO of *BlackRock*. It is his plan to "FORCE CHANGE" and basically *Woke* ideology into EVERY corner of our Pop Culture Entertainment, through movies, comic books and video-games, and it's been going on since atleast 2016, this stuff has only been exposed and made public since around 2023 and most people are beginning to really talk about it now.

      If they had played the games there's no way they would've been allowed to work on the show.
      Henry Cavil is a pariah in Hollywood for actually reading, playing, and caring about the source material. He should be the highest paid actor in Hollywood or at least on the level that Vin Diesel (another famous nerd) had in the 2000s.
      Hollywood doesn't make movies to please you, they make movies to change you, as they constantly say at every award show. The writers can't change you if they stick to the source material.

  • @berserkerpride
    @berserkerpride 5 месяцев назад +19

    It speaks to their lack of talent that the only way to write a less emotional character would have an emotion mcguffin that you can just pull out.
    No gradual transformation of the character to understand their feelings better. Nope just pop it out and he's a completely new person instantly.

  • @axson8
    @axson8 5 месяцев назад +37

    If they wanted to stunt his emotions, why not just stunt his limbic system? I never watched the show, but in the OG they made a clone of John to hide the kidnapping, youre meaning to tell me they arent capable of permanently altering the limbic sytem. They literally augment the spartans as children

    • @Alex_Fahey
      @Alex_Fahey 5 месяцев назад +25

      I just hate the entire idea of explaining his character as 'stunted emotions'. To reference The Fall of Reach novel, the defining point of his character across his entire upbringing is that he fully bought into the story he was told. He was told that he was conscripted to be one of the heroes who saves the world. He's the little boy who desperately wants to be an astronaut who just found out he got put into an astronaut program.
      So, when he learns this, he immediately throws himself fully into it. He *needs* to be a Spartan. That makes him the ideal Spartan to lead very quickly, making him the natural leader of the spartans and eventually the 'last' spartan in Halo: CE. The only thing he really cares about is being that mythical hero, and he learns as a child in that program that there is more to being a hero (for example, being a leader means you have to know when to spend the lives of your men because you can't win and keep them all alive).
      This all creates this very assertive and focused character. He has to be the figurehead that not only regular men but especially his Spartans look up to as a guiding light because the man in charge CANNOT be an emotional wreck because that destroys morale.
      Starting with the beginning of Halo:CE, now that his entire family is dead (well, most anyway). The only people he really cared to talk to are gone, so we have this almost completely silent protagonist beyond giving out orders and occasionally speaking to the few friends he makes (like Cortana, Foehammer, Sergeant Johnson, and the Arbiter). He does NOT lack emotions. He is just a private person by monumental grief and nearly equal necessity.

      @@sarinat3101 Yep. In fact, the imperfect nature of the cloning process was actually in their favor since it made for self-disposing evidence.
      And, oddly enough, there’s even a scene in The Fall of Reach where Halsey is discussing exactly why false memories or inflicted amnesia would be a bad idea. Both have a hefty chance of causing crippling brain damage, and even if they don’t their permanence would always be in question. The program already had an assload of dangerous enhancement procedures in place, and Halsey quite rightly didn’t see the point in an extra one whose goal would already be met by virtue of indoctrinating then from the age of 6.

    • @tanodz7635

      @@electricbayonet2 , not only that she also entertained the idea of straight up lying to Spartans or witholding info from them, but immediately dismissed it, since if truth got out, there would be a great chance of the rebellion or worse. The TV show is meant to represent women and minorities in a good light, but their actions did anything but. Halsey we see in the Show is irrational, acts on instincts and emotions, insecure and not trustworthy. All of these qualities are not signs of a Strong and Independent Woman, but of a cowardly liar, who hides behind people's backs and stabs them given the opportunity.
      I always perceived Halsey as a woman of science and logic, who would also show her motherly side to Spartans, even if it was in her own interests. The way they portrait her in the show just insults me.

    The halo novels do a great job of humanizing chief in a way the games don't. We get a lot more of his internal monologs. We see him struggle with the deaths of comrades, feel uncomfortable whenever he's not got a clear objective, and want to take on the guilt of every step backwards throughout the human covenant war.

The have been numerous studies on children that aren't properly socialized, and its been well documented how bad that is for a persons development. They dont need the pill to have a stoic soldier character confront normal life and their emotions for thd the first time. Universal soldier did that excellently decades ago.

    I never understood, you had an awesome and very established badass character of Sergeant Major Avery Junior Johnson, he could have been a fantastic way of portraying more emotion and spoken lines without ruining John in any way. Have him fighting with Chief, adding a human take even though Johnson was technically one of the first attempts at making a spartan (as I recall). I doubt that there would be a single Halo fan that would hate to have Chief and Johnson as basically a buddy couple during the show, he's an established badass in all of the games that he's in, his lines were always great, I just don't get it.
    Then again I recall that this show was kinda made as a big middle finger to the fans so yeah no wonder they didn't want that.

    117 was also portrayed as more mechanical than human he was built to be a weapon for humanity and Cortana was his humanity despite being an AI (Cortana has a great line in the games about this). It was one of the more defining parts of the game and the books and a theme that will stick with me for my lifetime. It is also a key reason for him never being seen outside his armor, again he is being portrayed as nothing more than a weapon, that is how he sees himself and how a lot of those who created him see him. Not a person but a tool to serve the human race. The loss of Cortana, while not a thing I personally agreed with, was what brought about the biggening's of chief have to face his humanity (this could have been done in a really interesting way but 343 failed in my opinion).

Most of em are super hype but have a character or 2 that are absolutely terrified. Cause if their situation requires the chief that means that the squad mortality has increased sevenfold. And just have the escalation continue to mad levels. Hell even get the flood involved and end it with a last tragic odst just ending it. Do a good story about the isolation of a hero left not by his own will but the tragedy of his circumstance.

    I’ve said it before, and I shall repeat for posterity: the greatest sin committed by 343 Industries is the nuclear-weapons grade destruction of Chief and Cortana’s characters.
    John-117 is a cybernetic super soldier with the emotional range of a machine. Cortana is an artificial computer construct who’s the most emotionally dynamic character in the games. Both are two halves that create a cohesive whole when together.
    Which is why it’s world-class retardation to kill off Cortana, immediately bring her back just to make her the villain, and then kill her AGAIN and replace her with a hollow facsimile. Not to mention, the mischaracterization of Chief, where everyone seems dead set on exploring the character’s humanity, which does nothing but complicate the plot.
    As far as I’m concerned, Chief and Cortana are still drifting in space amongst the ruins of the Forward Unto Dawn. Waiting for the day we wake them. When we need them…a day that hopefully comes sooner than much, much later.

      @@prufan Yeah I mean, there are indications of good storytelling in that game, but it ultimately falls flat in the long run.
      I mean, the FIRST thing you do once acquiring full creative control after Bungie departed Microsoft after Halo Reach, is to kill off one of the main protagonists, in an epic climax that wasn’t well built towards, in what was heavily advertised as the “return of the Halo franchise” after seemingly closing the book on Chief’s war.
      And they’ve been picking up the scraps ever since.
      If anything, Halo 4 felt like it should’ve been at the VERY end of Master Chief’s saga. As in: never planning on using him again. Cause as I said: Master Chief without Cortana doesn’t work well.
      Not to say that 343 hasn’t learned their lesson. After all, I thought that Halo Infinite was a baby-step in the right direction. In regard to the gameplay, character design, and even certain angles of the plot. Though, the story still suffers the sins of its forefathers.

    100% the helmet came off because he "need muh facetime so casting directors and audiences will respect me and come to muh movies because of muh face."
    Guarantee, though, more people would recognize Kane Hodder for his role as Jason Vorhees and Robert England for Freddy Krueger without ever even seeing their real faces in their movies (or in England's case, seeing his real face only briefly at most).

    I would argue that Bungie was definitely leaning in the direction of "Halsey is an unrepentant monster" by the time of _Halo: Reach_ with the revelation that she created Cortana by secretly flash-cloning herself over and over, murdering each of these innocent girls when they evinced some minor genetic flaw, and then finally, when she had managed to produce her one, perfect clone, burning out that girl's brain to create the Cortana AI. It's actually something of a triumphant moment in _Reach_ when Carter A-259, who was augmented by Col. James Ackerson's rival Spartan-III program (which itself was created specifically to fight the Covenant, not independence-minded human colonists trying to escape the heavy hand of the United Earth Government) essentially tells Halsey to go fuck herself.

      TBF in the normal lore she didn’t actually clone whole humans, just the brains, which were never conscious or functional (at least any more than any other organ on its own). Remember that growing whole humans tends to lead to them dying anyway - something Halsey herself would be well acquainted with for the Spartan program, so it’s not like she’s innocent here.

      @@samlund8543 perhaps that was the original story, but by the release of _Reach_ Bungie had retconned it to Halsey growing and killing multiple complete clones in order to (eventually) create Cortana (IIRC _The Journal of Catherine Halsey_ document that was included with some of the more exclusive editions of _Reach_ has actual sketches of the clones themselves at various stages of development).

    The modern writing tendency to ignore decades of written lore is baffling, especially since they replace it with pointless drek. They always have to make it their own, and the result is consistently a product that's just familiar enough to be offensive to fans.
    They're literary dementors: if they're anywhere near the project, they suck the joy out of it, and if they get close enough, they'll suck out the soul.

    I wonder how they’ll feel about the way the show handled the Fall of Reach.

    I think John 117’s story is completely told in The Fall of Reach. It’s the coming of age of a reliable, self-insert badass. There is no more character story to be told there, supposing that the games continue to be epic first person shooters.

      I like the concept of 4 as a story. With Cortana being someone he can't save. Just due to her being the type of AI she is.
      I think they portrayed him dealing with a loss like that well. 5 on was stupid but I think the idea of seeing how spartans could handle a post-war galaxy would be emotional and interesting.
      They were made for war so without it I truly wonder if they could find any meaning in life. I disliked how Nightfall implied a S-2 could desert and just have a family easily. I found the idea laughable with how they all are described as acting like no other humans due to the training and trauma.

      He's almost definitely not making it onto the S2 episode...either next week or the week after
      Given after the YMS incident they replaced him with Drinker in the Saw review, I wonder if they'll replace AM with Az for the S2 episode

    13:44 wait a second, that’s what antipsychotics do. They could’ve told a story like We Happy Few but in space but no, they had to slap the Halo logo on it and make it horrible.
