    Obviously, footage/assets are from both the Paramount+ Halo TV show & Halo games.

    The best screen adaptation of Halo I've seen yet is definitely "Forward unto Dawn." We only got roughly 15 minutes of Masterchief in the entire movie, and that was at the very end. That 15 min alone is better than the entirety of this dumpster fire of a show.

    So far the Halo has been quite a ride... sor far:
    =>Master chief spent more time without his armor than with it
    =>Spartan aren't brainwashed kid, they're just normal people inhibited by advanced suppositories
    =>Covies have humies
    =>No sergeant Johnson, so the show doesn't know what the ladies likes.
    =>Captain Keyes is dead
    =>No Pillar of Autumn
    =>The fall of Reach was the fall of Reach city's orbital lift and it lasted 10 minutes
    =>The spartan III programm is so late in the timeline it's basically the spartan IV program
    =>Kurt got genderbended?
    =>Cortana has been stolen.
    =>There is an arbiter, but it's not Thel.
    =>Where the fuck is Thel Vadamee?
    =>The fucking Kwan Ha and the space pirate subplot has almost more run time than anything else. It's not even good.
    Who the fuck greenlighted this shit?

      Yup, I also see it as hubris from screenwriters who think they're better than video game writers. I have a good friend who wrote for Halo, and yes, I'm biased, but she is a much better writer than those Hollywood hacks.
      And I can be a snob about literature, but the best fantasy lore I've experienced lately is dark souls. Video games really have been come an incredible narrative medium, and different perspectives, like Miyazaki, on these genres give it a freshness and depth that I feel has been missing.

    Kiki wolfkill one of Bonnie Ross’s stooges is the head honcho for the show, she barely understands what halo is about when quizzed on it and she doesn’t care usually when someone asks about obscure lore bits in interviews and wont answer it. The show reflects her attitude towards the fans that have kept the franchise alive for the past 20 years and Pablo was likely cast because she’s a fan of his in orange is the new black

    • @stephenroy2943
      @stephenroy2943 2 месяца назад +1

      Ngl, I don’t mind him as chief. Of all the criticisms I’ve heard, this one I don’t sympathize with.
      The show is ok, it’s a drama that emphasizes emotion over spectacle.
      The games died bro. Of course the show will be different, even negatively.
      The military professionalism failures on the part of the Spartans and strategic/tactical failures of all characters in the story ARE valid criticisms though.
      World building and story direction aren’t exactly valid. This timeline is intended to be different.

    • @Clippychinw
      @Clippychinw 2 месяца назад +35

      @@stephenroy2943
      first off did you even watch the video before deciding to defend it in the comments.
      Secondly have you payed attention to how much of a major laughing stock this show is to the wider gaming community? Nobody likes Pablo due to him berating the fans who were critical of the way he won’t keep his helmet on and his portrayal of master chief in general.
      It’s not hard to portray master chief literally look at the forward unto dawn web series as a reference point or even recently halo infinite.
      I’m not against something trying to be different but halos world building in general is pretty much set in stone for the early half of its overall story and lore. The world building they’re doing for this show is piss poor comparatively and is mostly a waste of time like they can’t even name the city of reach properly.
      Various Characters and relationships to them are all over the place and key players to the events of the games being killed off or are mischaracterised entirely is a major issue.
      The biggest of them are Cortana and master chief. In the first game it’s stated by Captain Keyes that if the covenant captured Cortana then the UNSC has pretty much lost the war.
      If you can’t get a basic understanding about that correct then they shouldn’t have even bothered trying to make a show in the first place.
      Creating tension for the sake of it is bad for a story in general unless you’re thrown into the thick of it.
      The games aren’t dead but they aren’t booming either and if you payed attention to development of infinite and anything 343 have made you’ll see straight off why they are in the state they’re in.

      They completely changed Keyes personality, removed Sgt. Johnson from the entire series, changed Miranda's personality, added a HUMAN to the Covenant, made it so the Spartans have EMOTION INHIBITORS, the fact that they SHOW Chief's head whenever they possibly can, and the choreograph/CGI of the battle scenes feel like they are from the late 90's.

      The Velma mentality. The head honchos running the show didn’t care about it. The show disrespects the audience and itself, though not as blatantly as it’s Scooby Doo counterpart. We saw it in the Witcher as well, where the showrunners show contempt for the material to the point that even the cast who loved said material can’t hope to save it. (I seriously hope Henry Cavil’s Warhammer 40k project goes well). Unfortunately this mentality isn’t new in Hollywood. Video game adaptations are notorious for this. Not to mention many book adaptations have also failed for this very reason. Lack of direction can be just as bad as direction in bad faith, and Halo shows both. If the source material is something you view as constricting then do NOT make an adaptation of it. The only exception to this rule is M. Night’s Avatar the Last Airbender adaptation where he seemed to like the series….but didn’t understand the first thing about it.

    This can be at a macro scale where the UNSC abandons their biggest military force with no warning when supposedly fighting for survival, to the micro scale where marines get sent into a dark corridor with no lights after just seeing their comrades get slaughtered.

      I agree. Lazy, vain, and too prideful to realize what they are doing. Sucks too, since there are plenty of movies that could have easily been hits, along with TV shows that seemed like obvious slam dunks. South Park summed it up well on their takedown of Star Wars. Not on Kathleen Kennedy (which in itself is hilarious since they went easy on her and she is still pissed about it), but on the fact that Hollywood is extremely lazy and would rather pander to the lowest common denominator even if it obviously hurts them rather than make something of substance. I understand a bit. Just like in the games industry, it is very risky. Millions of dollars pour into these projects with zero guarantee of just breaking even. Yet even so, trying to play it “safe” at the cost of your writing/storytelling is quickly being shown to no longer work. Marvel is learning this the hard way, the really hard way. But whether or not they learn is up for debate. Unfortunately bubble mentality exists, especially in Hollywood.

    The helmet more of a writing problem. They chose to write lazily instead of using the helmet as a device with the story. It's the same problem with the all the writing - rather than look to the source material they lazily wrote whatever story beats they thought they could pack into show loosely dressed up as Halo. Actually that's the entire problem with the show, it's a completely different show loosely wrapped in a Halo theme.

    • @misterdarwin
      @misterdarwin 2 месяца назад

      Here's the thing: The helmet/mask problem has existed for a long time in Hollywood. Think of Stallone's Dredd. Hell, Raimi's Spider-Man spends almost as much time with his mask off as on. The creators (and probably actors) think audiences need to see their faces to identify with the characters. But Karl Urban's Dredd and The Mandalorian put the lie to that. They showed how it could be done effectively.
      That said, the Mjolnir suits aren't just helmets. They are big and heavy and there may be practical issues with keeping the actors in them all day, every day and I doubt that the show has a budget that would let them go the CGI Iron Man route.

    Band of Brothers set in the Halo universe. Either during the war or the insurrection. That's all they needed to do and if done from the soldier's perspective would have been easy to work with given the format. If Spartans had to be involved they should be handled like the Shermans showing up in Caerentan.

    I continue to watch it because I was roped into doing a podcast on it (Cortana's Communiques). I confess I am not the world's biggest Halo fan. I played the first game over 20 years ago, enjoyed it immensely, but never really got around to the sequels. As a well rounded nerd I have picked up bits and pieces of the lore over the years, but at best my familiarity with the universe is passing at best. That doesn't mean I can't tell what makes a good show.
    My biggest issue was the introduction of characters that really had nothing to do with the main narrative: Kwan first and formost, Makee next, and Soren lastly. To the best of my knowledge (leaning mostly on my podcast co-hosts), they have nothing to do with the series' lore. We are tuning in for Master Chief and the Spartans, and for the most part their stories have been tangential. I hate to lean on this criticism, but it feels like Kwan was put in there to sell the show to Asian markets. Makee most likely to give a (cheap) human face to the enemny. Soren? No idea. I do love Bokeem Woodbine, and the notion of a fugitive Spartan is interesting, but I have no clue what he has to do with anything. Season 1 ended in a way to let these characters bow out of the show, but no, they had to bring them back - one literally back from the dead.
    The second issue is one that plagues many modern tv franchises - it is focusing on telling us an origin story. Where Halo: Combat Evolved just dropped Master Chief (and the player) on Halo with little to no explanation as to what it was and how they got there, we are a season and a half into the show and still waiting. This is even worse than those Marvel shows that wait until the final episode to put the hero in their costume.
    Lastly, they are falling into the Chosen One trap. Some series, like Dune, are meant to have messiah figures. Halo isn't one of them. Master Chief was just a good soldier in the right place at the right time; the mysticism is being shoehorned into the series for no good reason. This reminds me of when JJ Abrams rebooted Trek and decided that the universe would bend fate to being the Enterprise crew together. Or when Lucas decided to insert the prophecy of a Chosen One after 22 years, 4 movies, and countless video games, comics, and novels.
    I am convinced that they erred in making Halo a tv series. Master Chief is John Wick; no character growth needed. We just want him to kick ass, and that's hard to do week after week on a tv budget. They should have just stuck with the notion of making it a film series rather than a crutch to prop up their streaming channel.

    • @nobodykayaks1041

      Agreed, by the show writers logic john wick should be performing worse than the halo tv show. You dont have to adhere to lore 100% when adapting but to completely rewrite the core of the story, its no longer a halo stoty but a "what of" story about john halo

    • @misterdarwin
      @misterdarwin 2 месяца назад +3

      @@nobodykayaks1041If I were a showrunner (and am not) I would approach any adaptation by first finding out what the fans love about it and either do my best to conserve those things or at least have a damned good reason for leaving them out. You can change some things - like Raimi's Spider-Man having organic rather than mechanical webshooters - but you can't make the property unrecognizable. And I would do this whether I was already a fan or not. I've seen fans of properties who have a... unique take that doesn't align with other fans (Bryan Singer's Superman Returns and Rob Zombie's Halloween are two good examples of fans who had unpopular takes). I think a perfect illustration of adapting a property is Super Mario Bros. The 1993 film is an atrocity harmed first and foremost by choosing the wrong medium - live action. The 2023 film on the other hand is almost too dedicated to fan service, but it works because it gives the audience exactly what it wanted.

    13:00 - Yes, in my opinion there were basically two ways to do this:
    1. Start the show during the start of the "Fall of Reach" novel. Show Chief being kidnapped as a child and show him growing up to be that invincible Spartan. As an adult you don't see him with his helmet nearly as much anymore, but you know he's under there. With this approach first you get the human, a human who becomes an invincible super soldier. But even as an adult you could show parts of him that still reflect who he was before. And we'd get that and empathise with that because we saw him grow up. So you can combine the human and the super soldier by having the human become the super soldier with hints of the human.
    2. Or you could start the show when the war with the Covenant has already begun and Master Chief is already a super soldier badass. In this case what you want to do is first build him up as this invincible, stoic warrior. This symbol of hope and all the skill and innovation of humanity. And then once that image has been firmly established across several episodes or even an entire season, THEN you start showing another part to him. Moments of vulnerability, moments of emotion, moments of humanity. This is basically the approach the games took. But it's very important that you establish him as a super soldier first before you show his more human side.
    The show did neither of these things. It quickly flashed in our face "Hey, here's a Spartan" and then constantly just showed him as a human (and a ragemonster) with few exceptions. And it just doesn't work.
    You have to either start with the human and turn him into the super soldier (with shades of humanity), or you have to start with the super soldier and then give him more humanity over time. But what you cannot do is quickly pay lipservice to him being a super soldier, and then spend all of your time focusing on the human.

    • @Alpha1200
      @Alpha1200 2 месяца назад +1

      Oh, and I HAVE to comment on the emotion chip.
      Master Chief isn't really a fully developed character in the games, certainly not the Bungie games. That's because, as you said too, they wanted you to be able to BE him. But in the books he is. And to the extent that Chief is interesting as a character, WHY is he interesting? He is interesting because he's just a human being but who was kidnapped as a child and put through a bunch of stuff to have him become the soldier humanity needed him to be.
      The interesting part here comes from how Chief's life experiences have shaped him into the person he is. How all of that trauma, the social isolation from anyone except other spartans, etc. affected him.
      So what does the show do instantly? It introduces an emotion chip which explains why Master Chief is the stoic badass he is. Like... whut mate? You instantly took away the interesting thing about his character here. The question of how his life affected him. You explained it all away by having this emotion chip be a thing.

For a show to work in the long run you need a complex character with multiple arcs , to layer over years . We should follow a normal marine , a navy pilot , odst basically a mire sgt Johnson like character , or even arbiter and have master chief as thie legendary Trump card in the show . It could also be more like a documentary or the human covenant war , shown through different characters sort of like the WWZ novel

    It’s such a small thing but making Master Cheeks the literal face of the show was such a problem as it shows a fundamental misunderstanding of what Halo is all about, who Chief is and why that element is so crucial to his character. He doesn’t need to show his face to show his emotions.
    And that writ large seems to be the major problem with this show - an extremely valid, surface level understanding of the source material which paves the way for mom and deeper problems. I don’t know why it seems like the people who get hired for these projects are outsiders who skimmed a wiki summary of the story they’re adapting but it kills series like these every time.

    8:06 I disagree, I believe the helmet being on keeps the theme of John being a weapon and not a person. People refer to him as “Master Chief” or “Spartan”. I don’t think it has anything to do with putting your own self I to MCs shoes. It’s got to do with the theme of him being dehumanized, not the other way around. MC connects with Cortana, an AI, more than any other character in-universe bc he feels more connected with a non-human than any other person. It’s more of the same theme that implies he is treated and behaves like a machine, a weapon, a Spartan. He is not human, and that is the point. You said it yourself-he’s an emotionally conditioned, pre-programmed child soldier that has been genetically and technologically enhanced. That is why the helmet being removed is a bad choice. It makes MC a character he never was.

    They let Cortana get captured so she can gain knowledge about the Covenant, their homeworld and leadership (in the games she was a key part of the UNSC’s plans for a “final strike” to kill off the Covenant leadership… and then Reach fell unexpectedly)
    They let Reach fall to make her capture seem genuine. ONI wasn’t trying to kill Johnny Halo, he’s too important to their propaganda.
    The reason why he was told to turn himself in was so he could be shipped off world with the other assets.
    It was literally nothing personal.

      Except, Ackerson has broken the Cole protocol by letting Cortana fall in the hands of the covenant...unless of course she is a copy which doesn't contain the knowledge of earth...in which case why couldn't they have written this bait n switch tactic into the silver timeline WITHOUT having to let so many die on Reach? That's treason and crimes against humanity for Ackerson and co.
      Also, Cheeks and fellow Spartans were never going to be removed with other said assets because if so, why would cobalt team be sacrificed so pathetically.
      See, your version is more well thought out than what the show runners and writers can come up with. They should have done what you said.
      Parangonski obviously made a deal with cortana to safe cheeks life when she was being removed from his brain....but if it was " save Jimmy rings and I'll get caught by the covenant and get you intel" it was a VERY RISKY plan given all their other collective attempts have failed.

    What I would want to tell those people who made this show and many a so called "adaptation" or "sequel" or "reboot" of various franchises in the last decades: If you don't like the source material DO NOT MAKE A SHOW IN THAT FRANCHISE! Go pick a franchise you like or make something new of your own!

    They should have never tackled the mainline franchise. Adapting whats already perfect and cinematic is pointless. They should have fully committed to an anscillary story, use side characters or make up new ones. It means nothing if this isnt "Canon", theyve violated core principles of existing characters and are making something that is fundamentally not Halo.

    Season 2 is a marked improvement. I feel that's worth talking about. There was a change of showrunners and they were given the keys to a broken car and I feel they've done a much better job putting it back together. Looks like we're getting to the start of Combat Evolved by the end of the season.

    The whole series was there on a plate. We’ve have been given all of the marvel universe with canon, lore, Easter eggs etc embedded into the movies - this could have been so simple to do for the writers to pick a place in the timeline, create a story that sits well in the given timeline, fill it with nuances that give back to the fans and end season 1 at a point which leads into another game (E.g. between reach and combat evolved) the season 2 could be put in the next gap a few years later. With the Mandalorian, we were given HELMET STAYS ON AT ALL COSTS, and all of the above for fans to enjoy…

    Back in the Bungie days, they were leery of any outside adaptation of their ip. Probably because they wanted no other hands messing with whatever story they wanted to tell. In hindsight, and particularly looking at the shitshow the tv adaptation is, it seems they were proven oh so very right.
    Edit: The players not seeing Chief's face WAS intentional on Bungie's part. They wanted the player to BE the Master Chief as part of the whole power fantasy thing, which is why so little character and voicelines were added for him.

    The biggest problem is they hired writers that didnt play the games read the books or bothered to do their research on the lore. They didnt have anyone to oversee the project as well. They did this on purpose looking for a easy cash grab. Anyone that comments how bad it is on the website they block their comments. Its filled with bots and people lying about being halo fans. They can't handle constructive criticism at all. The only way this show can be fixed is to fire the team and hire people that actually care about the game. They did a pretty good job with Last of Us. That got alot of positive feedback.

    Everything feels unearned in this show. Revealing Chief's face, Keyes' death, Vannak's death, the forced emotions we're supposed to feel for side characters, even the fall of Reach. A season and a half of buildup to the fall and it's over in 1 episode where most of the action took place off screen. I don't understand when people say that Keyes went out like a boss, for example. Why? Because he had a pipe? It felt so anticlimactic, unrealistic and unearned. That's how the whole show feels... like every single expectation we have is just going to be subverted, because it will be.

    I fully agree with you on the writing front its so weirdly bonkers in parts as if the writers have an idea where they want the story to go but have no idea how to get there. And how has the UNSC missed that some of their highly trained, rare and super expensive super soldiers are acting weird and have removed their pellets? Did I miss something or is UNSC medical just really bad?

    You’re right. Soldiers love getting their helmets off and that’s what subtly sets Spartans apart. They live in their helmets 247. They are more comfortable being soldiers than anything else humanity can offer. I’ll watch it though and I bet a lot of other people will too because we’re starved for good sci-fi and this gives us a pittance. I would wager the producers knew that on some level too.
    I wonder if this coming out in the wake of the writers strike has anything to do with it. Much of it was made previously but writers were getting ripped off for a very long time and who could blame them for not caring when they’re barely scraping by?

    I think season one should have started with when Halsey/Keys interviewed John as a child. Then they could have followed the events up to the fall of reach. In all those events we could see chiefs face as he grows and then when we finally see Pablos face as an adult it wont be so hard to accept.

    This is a good summary of the situation.
    I have to write my feelings about the topic and it will be a little bit long comment. So bear with me.
    What I expected from the series? I did not expect it to be fully the same as the games of course, as tv and video games are a different medium. I understand this. But I expected it to follow the general feeling of the games. I think to make a comparison, I would´ve liked it to be like Band of Brothers / Master And Commander type of series.
    And the biggest sin of the series is that it goes on side quests when there are no episodes to waste on those. Side quests and filler episodes were ok when the seasons lasted like around 20 episodes. Like Babylon 5 had 22 episodes and Start Trek TNG had 22, 25 or 26 episodes per season. Then you could have those but not when seasons last under 10 episodes.
    So what is the premise if someone has forgotten it? Humanity is facing a genocidal alien race that is trying to exterminate humanity. Yes, to kill every single human, which means every woman, man, non-binary, child, whoever!
    In the lore, the war with the Covenant started in 2525, the date the series started is 2552. That means when the series starts, humanity has been fighting a war against the Covenant for 27 years. And humanity is loosing the war very badly.
    Where do we see it in the series? During the first season there was one scene that lasts only a few seconds with a video clip of a glassed planet. That is the only scene which showed the scale of what is going on. Where was the feeling of desparation? The sense of war time urgency? Everyone are way too relaxed and calm!!
    Then the "chosen ones". I feel sad they went with this route as according to lore all humans are the "chosen ones" or better yet "reclaimers". Not just a couple. The Master Chief does not need to be somekind of a magical chosen one to be the savior of humanity. They really wanted to insert the Makee character didn´t they and in doing so destroyed one of the most importan features in the lore? If they wanted to have Makee, why they couldn´t write her to the story in any other way?
    Then downplaying the fall of Reach!! That made me curse out loud. The fall of Reach is one of the, no, it is the pivotal moment of the Human-Covenant War.
    Reach was a bastion, it was THE military planet of humanity, which was thought to be too strong to fall or even be attacked. Where humanity went almost all-in with the Covenant, and lost.
    And it was not just the fall of the planet but the whole star system. Reach was the main planet but there were big battles in space and on other planets of the star system.
    Both sides took heavy losses but humanity got hit so bad, that after this it was sure that the Covenant will reach Earth sooner or later.
    REMEMBER REACH!!!
    Why couldn´t they implement the storyline from the game here instead of making MC go AWOL? Make it like the opening from Reach and have the Silver team go to the outpost and get instructions to investigate the blackout of the Visegrad relay and the disappearance of the Noble team (who went to investigate the same thing). Then we let Noble team rescue Cortana (like in the game) while Silver goes and does other shenanigans. Heck, tell a story how John-117 ends up on the Autumn.
    But no and of course, of course, it had to be Kwan that rescued Halsey and Silver team. Not the Pilar of Autumn. And the Master Chief sleeps (not on the Pilar of Autumn) over the biggest battle in human history.
    Also we know Cortana is very important to the UNSC and they just let the Covenant take her? Let me guess, it will be that Makee and the Arbiter will fly to Halo, because of course they will know the location of it. Then Cortana will message the location of the Halo to MC and they will fly there in their pirate ship.
    And why they had to rename New Alexandria to Reach City? Lazy writing? Reach City on the planet Reach. How about Mars city on Mars? Or if the series (and story) goes that far, New Mombasa will be Earth city? Lazy, just lazy.
    But honestly, I don´t have any big problems problems with the characters. Most of them are misplaced and misused but with good writing they could be much better.
    Wow, I knew my comment was going to be long but this long, hehe. I will end my rambling with this:
    I think if you go and look at the game cutscenes, game story videos and the live action game trailers, and even those are better in their feeling, quality and respecting to the lore than the tv series. Then your tv series production has something really wrong in it.
