Yep it can't be about safety, everybody caught by the camera continues on speeding, there has been zero intervention at that moment, this being the case there should be a high rate of car accidents that occur after a speed camera created solely by the people who are speeding, strangely however, this is not the case.

In California, we had red light cameras for a while, but they were taken down. This happened after investigative reporters found out that accidents INCREASED after the cameras were installed. Since safety was the primary justification for putting the cameras in in the first place, they wound up taking them down. Recently, however, there is talk of putting them up again along with a whole bunch of other anti-car measures.

Had a police car in Cardiff earlier this week (lights and horns going) drive beside me; the officer got out and shouted at me because I wouldn’t go into a bus lane to let him pass. I’d been stationary well before he came into view. I told him to stand in front of me and direct me into the lane or I wasn’t moving. His language “asking” me to move was entirely inappropriate for a police officer, but he eventually did as I asked and I hit the button on my dash cam saving the entire encounter. I’m just waiting for the letter in the post with a fine to arrive…

Doesn’t matter if he asked you or not. Just the same as if you are stopped at a red traffic light and a blue light police, fire or ambulance is trying to get though. They are directly asking you to move with lights and sirens. If you pass that line and a camera is set off then they don’t care if you were moving out of the way when they send the summons. Stay where you are. Sounds selfish but a substantial fine and 3 points on your licence making your insurance dearer that year is making people not care to move any more. There’s no discretion for a ‘good’ citizen only boxes to be ticked, quotas to be met/exceeded and coffers to be filled. They can’t have it both ways!

I’ve been saving this for years! I used to be able to focus completely on the road and what’s happening around me, but now I’d estimate that at lest 50% of my attention is focused on checking for all the different speed cameras and watching my Speedo. The official line is that if you’re not speeding, you have no cause for concern but that’s rubbish as how will you know if you’re speeding if you’re not constantly checking your Speedo? Average speed Amerasian are the worst as you have to watch your Speedo literally all the time! Then there’s the new 20mph limits which are a complete menace. Few cars are comfortable at that seep not matter what gear you are in and doesn’t the Highway Code advise to ‘Drive in sympathy with your engine’? Something these stupidly low limits make impossible. I’ve been driving in Wales for a week or so now and often I am faced with a sixty mile an hour limit that suddenly drops to twenty with the only warning being when you enter the twenty zone resulting in my having t9 break heavily , risking a rear collision with the vehicle behind me if the driver is not as quick to react as I am. I used to enjoy driving but no longer. It’s fast becoming a complete nightmare!

It's apparently been recorded to have caught more than all the other speed cameras in Devon and Cornwall combined. I guess we must have been a TestBench. I first caught wind of it when I got sent a fine with a vector based picture of my van going through about a couple miles an hour over the speed limit. This makes it more difficult to differentiate between 20 mph and a speed at which you know you can be booked for Ie 24 mph on a camera or 21mph if the police are following you , hence you are looking at the dash for that fraction of a second longer, when if they have, as they claim, introduced these measures on the grounds of safety , this is actually making the situation worse and in fact Dangerous because a drivers focus should be 100% on the road.

Previously I didn't have a problem with gatso cameras. A large camera, painted yellow. If you get caught by that, you probably deserve it.
But these cameras are so small that painting them yellow doesn't help much. And considering ALL they need is a power source, nothing else, how long before they strapping them to lamp posts making them even less noticeable? Without a yellow pole, you haven't got much chance if you don't already know about it. It was the first thing I thought when I saw them, and sure enough the manufactures website even mentions this.
And before the 'just don't speed' crowd turn up, that's exactly the problem. I don't make a habit of speeding. I'm not a boy racer, I try and drive sensibly, focusing on the road, but I'm not perfect. And cameras like this aren't playing fair. When you end up being caught out by one of these cameras while trying your best, while simultaneously having to deal with selfish aggressive driving and tailgating daily (ironically because you stick to speed limits) you feel very aggrieved.
Regular decent drivers end up getting caught out for minor transgressions, while anti social, selfish and aggressive drivers continue with little enforcement, because cameras can't enforce that. As I type this, I listen to the nightly idiots flying past into a blind bend at a totally inappropriate speed, while simultaneously being terrified of being caught out by these cameras. It feel inevitable, it's not if, it's how long.

Vision zero 2030 is another example of politicians not understanding reality. Firstly you can't eliminate accidents. Doesn't matter how safe things are, accidents happen. This is why you can be assured someone will die in a plane crash every year, even if billions more fly every year.
Secondly, the more you automate driving and turn these safety ideas into funding opportunities, the less safe people are going to be. You see it today, people drive so badly now compared to a few years ago because they are just focusing on not being caught doing something illegal rather than just being safe.
Personally, I see this as an opportunity to buy a drone to place a bin over these cameras. Could even become a trend! 😅

Where I live they have installed AVERAGE speed cameras. Basically a camera at each end of a measured distance that is unknown to most drivers. The idea being to keep people "honest" over a longer distance, not just slowing down for the camera and speeding up again. Of course once it's known where the cameras are the hooligan element pass through the first camera, park up for a bit, and then blast off down the road at hyper-illegal speeds past the second camera. This got countered with multiple cameras one after the other to catch the offenders. Whatever system is in place it soon pays for itself as people will speed, intentionally or not, stuffing more cash into the "authorities" back pocket.

In Manchester where these speed cameras have been installed a 7 year old girl was killed by a 14 year old hit and run boy on a motorbike earlier this year.
Here in Kent we have a number of unregistered motorbikes riding on roads, public open spaces and public footpaths. I have seen them doing 60 mph as they pull wheelies through 40 mph speed cameras.
Cars and vans are driving at 40 mph in 40 mph zones while being overtaken by motorbikes riding on the central hatching and over double white lines. Even if they have registration plates the forward facing cameras don't catch them.
When you steer around a downhill corner your attention must be on the road, when you straighten up and adjust your speed, you already have a ticket.
On my car the digital speedometer is just above the steering wheel, 2 lines of trip details are above it, to read the speedometer you have to take your eyes completely off the road and near focus at least 6" below the lower windscreen edge. Looking at the speedometer is dangerous in a rapidly changing road situation. No allowance for this is taken by the law.
Will police vehicles, including mobile speed camera vans be exempt from speeding regulations if they are caught by speed cameras while not displaying emergency flashing lights? Mobile speed camera vans don't observe double yellow lines or proximity to junctions when setting up, under American law any photos taken would be the fruit of the poisoned vine.

I can confirm they are purely a money making exercise as the zones change from 30 to 20 and back again within feet of each other. It was hideous to drive there and felt like I was being tricked into breaking the law! None of these draconian restrictions are all about road safety, they're primarily about emptying the motorists wallet. Your piece at the end resonated with me very much. I spent probably at least 30-35 years as a professional driver of vans, trucks and cars. Long distance, short distance, local, and general courier work, I've also driven extensively in Europe ( including Austria in winter, and including 8 years living in the Spanish Canary Islands ) as well as the USA; where, incidentally I saw some of the worst driving ever ). In all that time, I've only been involved in about 4 or 5 accidents, in every one I was either hit from behind or t-boned. I completely agree with you about being aware of your surroundings at all times. Anything that impinges on that awareness is detrimental to road saety.

Really great info given on this channel. Defensive driving was my specialty when I was a instructor.
After 50 years of driving zero points, zero fines I find it sad to see the standard of instructing and
driving so poor. So many drivers are completely clueless in their ability to see the road, develop that
3 D image you speak of. They blindly drive into situations where holding back would benefit them so
much. The driving test is so easy now and the lack of signalling which is taught now pathetic.
Only if required instruction I hear so many times, as if a newly qualified driver can decide in a split
second if a signal is required, result no drivers signal anymore. The HGV turn has become normal
for car drivers, swinging out left to turn right as if they are a artic, again where has that come from
pathetic driving by pathetic drivers. I actually welcome these cameras and hope the prosecutions
for seat belt and phone use whilst driving rockets. They deserve everything they get. Whilst I don’t
agree with 20mph zones they are as a result of poor driving standards, simplifying driving test and
lowering standards required to pass. All have resulting in poor quality drivers on our roads.

Very good advice from a professional rider and driver. No offences in 21 years. Living in South Manchester. I have Mazda Radar Cruise Control that starts at 19 mph in my 73-plate CX-5. I have a Snooper and I know the allowances.
The accidents are happening because of target fixation of speed cameras. I have seen many and also another way around not getting caught is the amount that drive around with green P's on their junk vehicles; they're not registered at their home address and their manoeuvres are comical like we would see in a circus.
They drive through no entry signs, red lights, turn right where it is forbidden and ignore the white arrow blue background mandatory signs at pedestrian refuges.
May I point out? You failed to mention that these new cameras lock onto your vehicle for about 2 kilometres or 1.62 miles to catch speeding up after the cameras too.
I have been on the threshold many times except my exceptional riding and driving record speaks for itself.

What motorists need is a gizmo with a live data base that can fit to EVERY car with audible alerts if overs the limit. Not sure if some up market cars have already got this. Sat Navs can alert you to the speed limit but are only useful if the database is up to date. Alternatively a speed camera alert system that detects the new cameras would be useful. Motorists need the technology to fight back.

One useful thing I find for complying with 20 mph limits is to drop down to 2nd gear in my 5 speed manual car. The combination of a lower gear and slightly higher engine note help greatly. Similar principle to dropping down to 3rd gear for a 30 mph limit, with a few exceptions where 4th gear is fine. Obviously this will be different for different cars, automatics, EV's etc but even with automatics, you can use a lower gear hold. Another thing I find very useful is having a free GPS speedometer app on my phone, which I have mounted in my centre vent, displaying pretty accurately my speed in large digits.

A GPS can't continually monitor your speed as it's relaying information and there are designed in micro breaks to alleviate channel congestion. It therefore has to algorithmically 'guess' your speed. GPS is also subject the prevailing signal strength available. If that's interrupted or fails you have lost your speedometer.@@chrishart8548
