My daily driver can comfortably do 30mph in 5th gear at 1200rpm but when lowering the speed to 20mph I have to drop to 3rd because 4th gear doesn't have the torque to pull the car. At 20mph in 3rd my car is doing 1500rpm. At 30mph you can cover a mile in 2 minutes, at 20mph that same mile takes 3 minutes, which means for each mile my car is pumping out MORE exhaust gases for an extra minute.

Remember the flashing >20mph< signs we used to get near a school when they were starting/ending? That made sense. A temporary restriction at a time where drivers needed to be more vigilant.
I can't think of the last time I saw one of those. Why does the same road need to be 20mph at 2am when noone's about?
If they truly wanted to make the roads safer then they should focus on driver training and awareness rather than lowering speed.
With 20mph limits I've seen a drastic increase in the number of impatient cars/vans running red lights and distracted drivers using mobile phones.
Both of which are a greater risk (esp phone use) to safety that the 30mph limit that's been around since the 1930s.
The argument for emissions is false too. My car gets almost half the mpg at 20mpmh compared to cruising at 40mph.
I honestly don't understand what their objective is, 'cos I can't think of any positive reasons for it.

I got my first speeding notice from the police (1st speeding offence in over 30 years), I was caught by a speed camera doing 24 (ridiculous). I opted to do a 'Driver Speed Awareness Course' instead of a fine and points on my license. There is a charge for the course which is almost the cost of the fine. The next day after the course I notice I hit 25/26. It's impossible to keep religiously under 20. I have nothing but contempt for all this nonsense, it is indeed a money making scam to load coffers full of cash. I think an EV being heavier than an equivalent ICE vehicle, both travelling at the same speed will cause more damage due to it's higher weight. So slowing those down makes sense as they are more likely to cause increased damage at any given space. Looks like Sadiq and Co also realised that it's another way to make money as well.

    • @Norfolkbiker50
      @Norfolkbiker50 7 месяцев назад

Yes, regardless of what some of the self righteous brown nosed nuff nuffs say it is incredibly difficult to maintain such a slow speed in a modern vehicle and I can't use cruise control in either my car or my van because in both vehicles it you can't engage it until you hit 30mph. Also what others are saying is right, in the attempt to drive at such a slow speed you spend most of your time looking at the Speedo instead of the road. It makes congestion much worse because the vehicles end up bunched together making it difficult to exit side roads and it definitely makes pollution worse because in order to drive that slow most vehicles have to be in a lower gear. There's a road I travel on regularly in rural Norfolk that was 40mph for about a mile as it went through a small village, by the time the limit reverted back to the national speed limit you were in open countryside, not a single building in sight. About 5 years ago that speed limit was extended for about another 1/4 mile for absolutely no reason whatsoever except it now passes a disused bus stop which has been adopted as a small layby, which by sheer coincidence is now where camera vans like to park!

  • @p51dgp91

All deliberately set at 20mph to catch out people who are driving carefully anyway. Being such a low speed limit staying at 20mph is very difficult as you feel like you’re not getting anywhere. Easy money for these thieving gits controlling the London councils. This will eventually ruin peoples vehicles as you’ll be permanently traveling at low speed and increases vehicle emissions pollution as there are a lot more traffic jams due to low speed limits, LTNs, cycling lanes and no entry roads.etc. Complete con.

I live in a very rural area and so the open road without observation or camera's is a city dwellers dream for driving! Quite often I can be the only person on the road for miles which is great for relaxing drives. When the 20MPH started to become a blanket coverage I thought that I would try reducing my speed just to see what it felt like for about a mile. It was the worst and most boring going backwards experience ever. I began to feel tired and my concentration started to wander because I knew that the stretch of road was an easy drive and it took Sooooo long and was not much better than walking! Obviously sensible speeds should kick in when appropriate and self imposed for safety reasons but Khan is on a money gathering scam when it comes to motorists and other vehicles and he knows it. I live in Carshalton Surrey, you were mentioning congestion, to that end there is a roundabout at Rose Hill, it has 6 roads converging on to it, in 1970 when I moved into the area it was quite a free flowing area however they decided to install traffic lights on the roundabout and from then on it became congested, admittedly in 1970 the traffic was lighter with les cars on the road but it is now a nightmare getting through that area. However about three weeks ago I had to through there at rush hour time and was dreading it, but when I approached it I was surprised to notice there was hardly any traffic, only then did I realize that the traffic lights were out so everybody was using it as you would with a normal roundabout and so it was virtually empty. This tells me that the traffic lights on this are a means of coursing congestion so they can say, " see how bad the traffic is and how much pollution they are generating " well they will if they are all stuck in a traffic jam !

Congestion is created by policy of the councils. Adding lights where they are not needed (as in your example), closing off all side roads, LTN's, narrowing lanes / widening pavemnts, 24hr bus lanes, cycle lanes, pinch points where only one car can pass and the oncoming traffic has to give way, need I go on? Take just half of all these things away and watch how congestion simply disappears.

I do the same I have to keep it in 2nd gear and through a long 20mph limit my truck goes into regeneration after a while because of the engine being at higher revs so what would normally get blasted out when you get out of a built up area (which is wrong cus all it does is move the pollution further out) gets blasted out in the town or city And if I leave it in automatic I keep getting dpf filter issues which costs alot to put right so the cheapest solution drive in manual, cars are not designed to go so slow for so long especially with all the pollution control crap on them

I think the reason for 20 MPH limits is to make ICE vehicles less efficient and more expensive ( and more polluting) to discourage them and the fact that many cars speed control either don't work or are unreliable at 20 MPH, ( typically below 40 KPH). So speed monitoring or control equipment may not record speeding detected by speed cameras, also their could be that changes to speed limits may not updated on the National Data base when they are introduced.

    When I learnt to drive
I was told 30 mph was the maximum speed limit
But the actual speed limit was the safe speed limit
So coming up to a mini roundabout you slow down
Coming up to side road in certain areas you watch out for car in side roads and prepared to slow down and stop just in case the person in the side road did not see you
The same with school the Same with park areas the same with town centres
    Kid playing.
We did not need to be told what to do and you never had to be worried
Now with these 20 mph zones you spending most of your time trying to stay at 20 mph and keep looking at your speedometer so you don't get a fine.
I think 20 mph are more dangerous than 30mph.
To take away people right to think
And to scare people well that dangerous

As an advanced driver and former instructor with over 50 yrs experience both in the UK and the US, I have just watched the most comprehensive summary of the driving environment in Britain today. I've wanted to make a video myself along the same lines for a while but you have done it for me! Thanx so much. You've made me feel so grateful that I don't (and never will) live near London. When I took my HGV I was told that a 44ton truck traveling @ just 5mph will if it hits a stationary object will weigh 60ton on impact ! So 20mph will make no difference what so ever as regards a heavy vehicle ! What would make a difference would be exactly what you said an initiative like the green cross code for kids . Cycling proficiency test at school age . A more robust enforcement of traffic laws on the cyclist that deliberately flaunt the traffic laws No lights jumping red lights etc . All this includes the cyclist that ride for a living . I have emailed a certain well known delivery company about one of there employees riding. This guy rode down the pavement of a one way street the wrong way no lights and when straight off the pavement in front of my 26ton artic ! I was told they train all their riders ? I have to periodically sit a CPC as all HGV drivers do covering various subjects such as vulnerable road users . Are training is on going. We have also had a session with the metropolitan police commercial vehicle unit . There are areas where these speed limits are applicable but many areas such as some you mentioned are questionable at the very least.

20mph speed limit enforcement is all about extorting money from ordinary people! Great for local authority’s coffers, great for insurance company’s coffers, great for enforcement camera company’s coffers! Those who assert that it’s all about safety, how many people were killed in your neighbourhood by cars travelling in the former 30mph zones? Sure 20mph limits reduce the likelihood of accidents, but by how much? Give us the data!
What reduces accidents is everyone taking care of and responsibility for their own safety. A responsible motorist will adjust their speed to the risks that present, so will often drive a lot slower than the speed limit. Equally, a responsible pedestrian, or any other vulnerable road user has a duty to look after their own safety. Common sense!
Laws that automatically apportion blame for RTAs due to a hierarchy of vulnerability are about as moronic as they come!! What idiot foisted that upon us??

Kahn is an idiot and is hurting not just drivers but anyone who does business and depends on passing trade. these financial and economic idiots will turn the whole city into an economic ghetto at this rate. The roads around my house are completely devoid of parked cars on a weekday from 8.30am until 7pm because the council took out the parking meters while at the same time as charging more for parking which made it really difficult to get tickets as the service doesn't work all the time, when the revenue dropped significantly they extended the hours and put the price up more, genius, pure genius...
