    This is great! I got one of these systems almost one year ago, and I could not figue this out. This tutorial has made this so that I can understand what this is all about. I was playing with it last week, but I was afraid I'd screw up my car. Not worried of that anymore.

      Glad to help, these are very easy to use and theres really not much you can mess up unless yours has like some engineering modes where you can change codes. never mess with those.

    Just bought a used SDS and waiting for delivery. But thanks for doing more with a smartphone than some do with a fancy camera and trick editing. I have an SL R230 so hoping that SDS will help me with some "roof diagnostics". Big thank you again!!

      well it certainly will help with the roof, you just need to know what to look for when trying to diagnose the roof.

      @@MasterTechLou Hi Lou and thanks for the reply. My current problem with the roof is that when operating to open, the windows drop a quarter inch then return. On the upside the roof is still up. Previously no issues and no warnings etc on cluster. Have looked through PDF Vario Roof diagnostic aid and the closest "symptom" I can find points towards Switch 117. What I am conscious of is not hearing the pump run, but that's not to say the switch interlocking is at fault and the pump never receives voltage to run.
      The boot/trunk is drier than an arabs sandal. (I try to keep on top of the drainage channels). So I'm hoping that SDS might throw up a fault code that might narrow the search down, rather than diving down a rabbit hole and start pulling everything apart hoping for divine inspiration.

      @@nilegriffiths5494 unless the dash shows “visit workshop” you may not have any codes and have to rely on switch data to know what’s happening. Try resync the windows. See if that helps.

      @@MasterTechLou Hi Lou! That did cross my mind. If there was a "system" fault, then it would be reasonable enough to think the OBD would report something through the driver information system. Had the regular floppy "Elephant Ears" last year. Nothing on the dash, but fortunately easy to spot and almost as easy to fix. I'll give the window reset a try like you suggest. Sounds like it might be time to go 'old skool' and get the multimeter out on those wiring connectors.

      @@MasterTechLou Lou!!!!!!!!!!! You are indeed a Master Tech! Finally got the time to check out the SL and try the window reset that you suggested. Job done! Roof works without an issue. If you're ever this side of the pond I owe you a Beer or probably six, certainly as many as you can drink that's for sure. But for the time being you'll have to make do with my gratitude.
      One last question though. What made you suspect the windows. Or should I say with your experience and insight, what was it that made you think to check the windows and I guess, importantly, is there another issue with a sensor or switch that I should be hunting down, or is it just one of those things? Stuff moves out of alignment over time?

    Thank you Master Tech Lou for the offer to answer questions on the BAS/ESP chronic intermittent warning light. I'll get some fresh codes and see what I find and then I'll come back to you. I live over 100 miles from a shop that will work on this car but I've been a professional auto mechanic my entire career but Mercedes I never worked on so this is a vertical learning curve for me. Thank you again!

      The most common repair for it is to replace the brake light switch under the dash as they commonly go out. But as we all know the car will tell you what it needs with a good scanner or the real deal laptop. Good luck with it.

      Well the issue finally turned out to be the lateral acceleration sensor. I even took it to Mercedes for repair and they missed it!! I found a shop that finally traced the issue down to that little sensor and that was it. The surprising thing was that with this vintage SLK this was a known problem but the mechanics in Mercedes didn't have the experience to catch it. Spent a lot of money on this one and I'm sharing my experience with others. The lateral aceleration sensor had an intermittent "open" at the circuit board and this is a known issue. Good luck and glad my car is fixed now. A pleasure to drive when a damn light isn't turning on and off.

    This was excellent. I've used the Autel unit for a few years. Finally decided to invest in the STAR unit. This video was extremely helpful. Would love to learn more about changing out componants and reprograming new ones. I need to replace the AC Control head. Have you done anything on that topic. Thanks Lou!

    Thanks! Just received my SDS and I'll be attempting to use it for the first time tomorrow. This vid gave me some idea of what I need to be doing. I grew up in an auto shop and retired as a computer tech so hopefully I'll have a handle on it, but it's nice to know there's someone like you I can ask questions if needed. Subscribed!

    Great explanation and video! Do you have a video on analyzing, flashing, programming an ecu? (W221)? I have extraneous codes that pop up once a month or so but I test the components and they work (valve solenoid magnets, tumble flaps, vent valve open or short circuits)

    It would be great to see you navigate the XENTRY platform in detail as you are working from the DAS program here. The HHT-win demonstration would also be good.
    I’ll be uploading soon as I will showing the programming and SCN coding of a new SAMF module in a 2010 W204 (C300 4matic) using my Autel MaxiSys Elite.
    Old unit had water damage and no communication with the car was possible as it arrived on a tow truck.

    I was watching your video again (btw, can't say enough what a great resource!), and I was wondering if you could explain something. On the main page where Xentry opens up, there's a menu bar on the left side with the icons options as opposed to being in the menu on the top left. I've looked around and cannot find where to go to change the view. Can you tell me where to go to do this?

      Hello, thanks for the nice comments. Im assuming you have a newer release of xentry. You cant change it , it was changed during the software updates. If we are on the same page. The xentry today is way different than when I made this video. If that helps.

    This is an amazing video and shows the exact amount of information needed to start with SDS This really helped me get started with this software. I have done a moderate amount of tuning using HP tuners on GM cars but never through xentry. Can you change the fuel maps using xentry?

      damon shamblin changing fuel maps no not that I have experienced, but in some models you can richen or lean injection a bit.

    Great video. Now what Star tool will work on w202 obd 1 port? I have a 1999 c280 w202 and used a Ilink scan tool but it only gives me a genral fault code. Will the right Star tool tell me exactly where is the problem??

      All mercedes star scanners come with the cables for all the models. And will read all the models

    I don’t know if you’re going to receive this as I expected to see a different format for a response. I have this system and I am trying to learn how to use it efficiently. The current problem is my transmission is slipping, not going from 1st to 2nd.

      Transmission issues. Especially working via text or chat.

    Man i just got mine set up man, and I was using the simulator untill my c4 comes in, and I was like " dude this simulator car is Fxxxcked" lol.

      Thank you!, yes in fact I once worked with a guy who bought a star, and the company he bought it from had the same link for the simulator under the standard xentry icon, drove us crazy, I was like lets just hover over the link click properties, dammit! He had 2 simulation icons!!! I don’t know why benz put a simulation program In but it has helped me help others through the years.

      @@MasterTechLou oh wow whats different Yeah im still learning. Just really wanna fix my r170. I actually just grabbed a coil wire from another m111 i believe and it was same 2ohm but my car didnt like it at all. so I shut it iff after 2 quick starts and revs. hope i didnt break anything i have an OEM pair coming in in few days, thought id be able to get away with this

      @@MasterTechLou hey Lou one another thing sorry if im being a pest. When it says Ignition off/on you said 10seconds. So its at position 2 which is ACC the mode before starting the engine, i go back 2 clicks or 1 click? and I wait 10 seconds in the Off position all the way back or just back 1 click from the Acc pre start position.
      I managed to clear my codes but still ran bad, let it run for an hour yest now gonna go out again later after I check here in WIS more

      @@Mitutumuch if you are using the merceded scanner it will tell you if it wants the ignition off for a time period or just off on, and off means off, on means second click where car is live. We will never use the first accessory position except for resetting maintenance in the dash.

      @@MasterTechLou thank you Master Tech Lou, I have been troubleshooting my slk230 I believe to be a bad tps. I dont know where rlse to look and I found that inside the WIS limp home mode is directly correlated to a TPS. and also I found that if the TPS is faulty by any means ( signal drops) the tps works off of the throttle body instead. Dumping the boost from the supercharger to protect internal damage? that must be why theres a second butterfly valve? as a precautionary measure for the cheap tps.
      also this just so happened to be under the Brake category too

    should you have the mercedes already running when you plug in star, or should you plug it in beforehand? it might not even matter, but i just got star, and i don't want to damage my truck doing something wrong lol

      Hello my friend, it doesnt matter. We plug it in either way. the obd port is battery power not key on power and the modules arent even connected or talking until the scanner reads them. No worries you cannot damage anything but glad you asked! Better safe than sorry!

    any ideas on leather seat repairs? also have you had problems with the gas tanks having problems resulting in rattles? thanks. ohh one more thing. can you set the car to only run on 93 octane in das so it can make more power? thanks again.

      dann hienn I don’t do interior repairs we always replaced the pads. Upholstery shops charge way too much. Only had rattles in R230 tanks in 03 . And all merceded are supposed to have minimum 91 octane. They are all programmed for higher octane fuel.

      @@MasterTechLou thanks. I have an 03 with tank rattles. going thru and replacing the hoses on the abc and rebuilding the hydraulic solenoids. I was a mechanic at the dealer for many years and had to leave because I did not like working for nothing

    Great! I learned some very good tips from u thank u! Now i have a question please: i have a xentry diagnostic and an evg7 tablet.i am using it now on my 2003 E55.but i am not able to go from xentry to wis to see instructions directly when i am performing diagnostic..can unplease help? What do i have to do to be able to acces wis straight from the codes and diagnose suggestions?now It says that wis is not available in this system and i would have to open it separately to enter the document nr i need to look up.!? Thanks a lot!

      Glad to help! Unfortunately you cannot jump right to wis, if it does show you a document number you can put that in the wis search box.

The document number would work but they are pretty complicated numbers sometime and format..there is no way for me to copy the doc nr and then paste in the wis if i open it..any other tips to make it easier please?       @@uniqueservices482 oh you are right! mine has not been doing that for me recently and I totally overlooked that it worked in the video., let me try and get back with you, and the wis documents are easy format, all you need is a pen my friend, dont overthink this.

      @@uniqueservices482 ok I checked it with the w220 model and it worked,. hmm, im not sure why it wouldnt work for me or you on other cars. interesting,. but even though its great to know why the fault codes comes on, most times just following the tests in the scanner will help you. plus you do need to have experience in knowing how the systems work, the scanners do 10% of the work, its a knowledgeable tech that does the other 90.

      @@MasterTechLou yes i understand it is the knowledge tha helps a lot..i was just curious if that works with newer cars vs not working with a w211 like mine being older..the wis would help if u dnt have enough experience.for u would be a lot easier and u dnt have to refer to wis all the time. I still wish i could make it go straight into wis from the diagnostic instead of plug in the documents u want to read separate into wis. If u kn a shortcut or a patch that would link them toghether let me kn pls. Or can i copy the document somehow from the diagnostic and paste it in the wis? Do i have to write in the parentheses also or just the numbers? Thank u

    i am having p1071 running lean code on my c230 2005 kompressor. Will this help find that possible leak? Also throwing off all kinds of engine codes, p300 and multiple misfires.

      Psy Lee yes and no. The scanner does 20% of the work, the knowledge and experience of the tech does the other 80%. Normally I will not diagnose in comments but your model has a huge issue with a crankcase hose that tears. Up in the front of engine between charger and the block. This was a service recall a long time ago. Im sure you can google and find the bulletin.

    I'm looking for a scanner that can turn off the SRS light on the dash of Mercedes models. My current iCarsoft CR V2.0 shows no fault codes in SRS system. Same result with my Blue Driver. So no codes and light stays on. I have three customers with this same issue. Will the MB SD Connect C5 do this? Thanks for your help.

      William L Brice I ran Into this recently. Check icArsofts website for the up to date software on your scanner. Also try a foxwell. But yes of course the star scanner can do this. Its the oem mercedes scanner we use at the dealer :)

      This requires the use of a dedicated laptop as I understand it. A laptop that cannot be used for any other purpose. Is this your understanding?

    I hope you have come across this code P02A7 = cylinder4 fuel trim at min , I swapped inj4 with 3 still having the same issue , replaced o2 sensor but , noticed that whether the o2 sensor connected or not the reading you get from the live data is S1-B1 1.02 , 3V , so replacing the o2 sensor still not fixing the issue , injector 3 was refurbished uncoded injector but we never had any engine check light for 2 years until recently !! , no vacuum leak , intake manifold checked as well no leaks at all !

      I have not had this issue myself. Sorry. Maybe check compression. And Injectors do need coded but they will still learn fuel trims as it runs. So sounds like possible compression issue.

      It depends.
      If you ran codes and it just needs to relearn the level it MIGHT be able to do it however in 99.99% of cases you will also have a fault and you need the dealer to perform the recoding of the module .
      This is tedious in a sense but only the dealer scanner at the dealer themselves delete the fault codes and allow the 0 starts to reset to 20 and disappear.
      The best you can do is turn the key on and wait 90 seconds and see if the starts disappears.
      also if you have a very very generic scan tool you can just hook up and erase the codes and it will allow one more start. You can do this over and over until you get to the dealer.

    Great information! What if the problem you are experiencing doesn't throw any fault codes? For example, when accelerating, the car cuts out (as though starving for fuel or spark) and all the dash lights come on briefly, but the car continues to drive. The scan doesn't show any misfire codes or anything I don't already know about on the car...have a light bulb out and a rear seat removed so the SRS code is showing for that? Will/can the cartechconnect.com site help with something like that?

      Dave's Drone the scanner is 20% of the equation, the other 80% is a knowledgeable tech that knows what values should read what.

    Amazing video but I have a question, are you able to access and/or modify the ECU coding through the program? I am attempting to put together a manual swap on a c230k and I need the coding for the automatic transmission to be deleted or changed, is this a feasible solution?

      For your model yes. For newer models
      You need to have dealer access for programming but in your model you should be able to code the cgw

    Hey seen your RUclips video on RUclips you said in the description you do online diagnostics for Mercedes?
    Having a issue with my 2016 GLA 45 AMG
    I CHANGED THE LOWER OIL PAN AND DIDNOT HAVE THE ENGINE BELT TOOL TO PUT IT BACK ON SO I TURN ON THE CAR WITHOUT THE ENGINE BELT.
    I DID THE MISTAKE OF REVING IT AND MY RADIO TURNED OFF CAUSE BATTERY WAS DEAD I DISCONNECTED THE JUMPER TO SEE IF THE CAR WOULD STAY ON AND IT SHOT OFF RIGHT AWAY THEN I TURN IT ON ANGINE AND REVED IT TO SEE IF IT WOULD STAY ON AND IT DID. After i got the engine belt tool i put in on and try to shift out of park and it didn’t do anything so it is stuck in park right now and can’t find any information. Are you able to help me ? Is in park and wheel are locked can’t even move it to tow it to the dealer

      You cannot change that with scanner only steering wheel buttons. It either shows speed or outside temperature.

    First of all congratulations for the video, this is the best xentry explanation video Ive ever seen, by far!! Thank you for helping everyone trying to learn how to use SDS! So, is it possible to virginize a facelift W212 cluster and make it work with a 2010 E250 using just xentry? Also, I have a problem with my left headlight, is it possible to test all the ILS cutoffs using xentry? It has the Hella VarioX system with multiple light modes and I guess it is not working fine

      Unfortunately with the xentry you cannot virginize a cluster. You can with an autel I believe.

    This is a very helpful video. Xentry and WIS are very big tools but you have to know how to use it in a professional way. There are not much infos about it. The simulation is very good for self study how it works without the risk to do anything wrong to the car. You can test what you want to do befor you really do it at the car..that was how i learned. There were new things i learned from your video. Thanks for that!
    An actual question do you have to reset something after change air filters on a 2007 W221 OM642? (HFM drift compensation, learned values for airfilter, adaption-data all in CDI5 -> control unit adaption ; in the english version the names could be a little different...it's my free translation for the 3 points). Are these 3 points to be done or any additional? Thank you!

      Yes in the cdi you can reset values for every part replaced. The module will self learn over time but it may cause errors between replacement and learning.

    Hi Lou, I have a 2000 ML55 with 2003 HID headlamps installed. The star is telling me to set the range on the lamps. This and the steering sensor are the only two codes I have. WHen I do the routine as instructed by star, the screen gives me a 'communication error' message. The eraser will not delete the event as it is a capital F. The motors move the projectors up and down during the test but I think the software is for the original style hid vs the projectors, which came out 2002. Is there a way I can get a software update for the later style and turn the autolevel option on. SInce this was not a DOT requirement in the US but was in the ROW, could I just get the update from a europe model? Thanks!

      Erick Miller hello, check the SAM settings. The sam might be too old. You might not be able to code the headlamps. Also the suspension needs to have a sensor installed to show the ride height if memory serves me.
      As for the steering angle sensor it depends on the exact term the scanner is showing . Then I can assist.

      @@MasterTechLou Hi again Lou. Thanks for the quick reply. I lifted the front of the ML about two inches and was able to get the voltage values within spec. I was then able to set the headlamp adjustment and the capitol 'F' became a small 'f', which I was then able to clear. After using the lan cable instead of wifi, the communication error gui went away. Presently, there is no codes at all on the ML. I plan to run the check on my 09' E63 next. The steering sensor code is intermittent and sometimes the reader flags it and other times it does not. The code is C1140. After a battery disconnect and left to right turns the ESP light will go out but the code will sometimes flag. Again, intermittent. I am planning to clean the sensor and see if there is any dust on the rotary scale. Regards, Erick

    I have done a complete ABC conversion to Coil Overs and have replaced the ABC Tandem pump and need to remove the ABC fault error code. I was given the screen shots for coding out the ABC on the R230. Mercedes dealer ship wants to charge for two hours labor min, to do this job and from what I was told by another TECH its a 15 min to 30 minutes max. Does it make sense for me to buy a used Star Diagnostic Computer to do it myself?

      I cannot answer that for you, it is up to you, they most likely want to not only code it but drive it to make sure its ok, true the scanner process take little time but you do want a quality repair and if they have not done this in the past there may be more that is needed once done, I was a dealer tech so I can see why they want to charge that much. What if they charged you 50$ and just did what you asked and gave it back with issues, now they are the bad guy. So you can argue both sides, to me I may have done the same, with option to only charge less if it went super smooth. That is my opinion with working in the dealer for 15 years.

      Benz-Tech Lou P. Funny you mention the fuel injectors. I actually have two, an ‘05 and ‘06. Bought the ‘05 as a bit of a project car with leaking fuel injector seals. No problem I thought. More than forty hours of cleaning later... I check regularly for the noise and any signs of leaking now. I’ll shoot you an email. I’m a lunatic when it comes to maintenance of them but would love all the info I can get. About to cross 200,000 miles on both and would like to keep them forever. Cheers!

      small country nothing tells you what to replace. Scanners only read information that the modules set. So if there is a fault code it leads to diagnosis steps which leads to a fault. Yes this will help you. No it does not tell you what to replace , only I can do that :)

    Dear Master Tech Lou, I just have two questions that I think you can help me with. First my C3 MUX or the old Dell with the STS software seem to be glitchy. But this is what I get with a Chinesium knock off. So it's intermittent at best But I was able to get the single code out for the ESP and it was a C1142-16. B24/2 Lateral acceleration sensor "signal cable open or shorted". In my research I've found that the lateral acceeleration sensor is a troublesome part and I need a new one. But I've also think I've discovered that this unit is not exactly plug and play that it needs calibration. Is this true?
    Also my second question what is the exact procedure to "clear codes". Is it run the scan, write the code or codes down and then press the erase button? Then what? Turn the key off and then back on again and rescan? I sometimes get a popup that the codes weren't erased and I needed to turn the key off but I'm vague about this procedure as I don't use the SDS often enough to get familiar with it.
    Also do you have a webpage or site that we can go to and bypass this format?

    what a great tutorial. So i have to replace old zgw to the 'new' one from another car. After installed it Then i miss an option in 'convenience' section that is automatic seat+steer (named easy entry). What should i do, what i thought is copy from old data zgw and paste replace data to the 'new' one. So kindly please how to do it under das xenty diag? thank you in advance. regards

      after running the quick test, go to CGW then adaptations, it should be in there under ALL CODES . go down the list. find the setting and select it, you can also make sure its turned on in the instrument cluster settings. it may have gotten turned off.

      Metalunique all will work, all have the ability and come with the round adapter for the HHT (hand held tester) version of das. They difference is just the computer, once you get to c4 If I remember correctly the computer software is all in the multipexer and can be linked to any computer that has a cd Installed for the program where the older ones need a laptop to function.     Hey I'm a locksmith I made a key to 2009 w906 sprinter by reading eeprom in ezs. I have a working key but I cant figure out how to program the remote. These usa sprinter Van's use a remote flip out key. Not a standard mercedes fobic. Can I use star c5 to program remote?

      Tyler Bruntzel I do not know how to program a sprinter key my apologies. I did try to simulate the process in my sds but could not find the option. The only thing I found was in N73 ezs to learn additional transponder key but im not 100% sure this will work without dealer access. I am sorry

    Can I remove a hard code like Code088 Splinter fuel rail pressure sensor reprogramming needed its in limp mode and cant drive over 40mph, i replace the sensor but I need to program the van back to normal to run normal I just want to get back on the road. Will I be able to clear the hard code with the C4?

    New to the channel.. my Mercedes key will start my car but it won’t lock or unlock or open my trunk. If I click the lock/unlock button on the inside of the car it will lock or unlock though so I’m guessing key? I did recently get a new tint and stereo. Pls help. 2007 Mercedes C230

      Better to ask the question than not :)
      it depends on the version you buy. go to www.mbstartool.com you will see the different kits. the newest version is a BRICK that has all the functions inside of it and you install the operating software on any computer. before that they all use a computer with all the operational stuff and software with a multiplexer that does the communication. Hope that makes sense, at least it did in my brain :)

      But when you have a fault code, press f3 in das or test/continue in xentry format and it will show you the steps

      Ok I figured out how to trigger fake codes on Xentry simulator but it's the same info as when I was scanning the vehicle live (which I guess makes sense). There is no info at all on code setting criteria or anything other than a test of the purging switchover valve.

      Book in top right corner. Then there will be a tab on list of fault codes.

      @@MasterTechLou but i allready changed the gearbox and gear selector for nothing she does the same thing :( , i run a diagnose with wurth wow because i don't have xentry star and on the diagnose tells me "yaw rate sensor on the trunck" that can be the problem? thank you, (i'am form romania and i live in France).

      @@adriancapatina2803 when you have a fault with the transmission you NEED to have a mercedes scanner to erase the codes in the transmission module or the issue will keep happening, the module is smart and will not erase the codes on its own even if you replace each part in the car you need a mercedes scanner to erase codes in the etc module.

      You will need the multiplexer, but you dont have to buy their laptops. I know what you are asking and no you need the multiplexer. Hope this information helps

      Yep you need to have the multiplexer, the c5 is the latest if memory serves me. The multiplexer is the software. All you put on the computer is a smaller program to display the Info. There is no other way that I personally know.

      @@stefancaroutletinc.9330 i cannot , mainly because there is too much info and only the mercedes star can do this, best to take to a dealer. basically something is not learned. and needs relearned with the scan tool.

    Nice job Lou! Still waiting for the follow up videos. I'm getting one of these as well and was wondering about module programming. I might need to replace the Airmatic control module and don't really want to pay close to 200$ at the dealership just for having it SCN programmed. Can it be done by copying the settings from the old one?

      More videos to come for sure, airmatic does not need programmed so to say , it can be copied and transferred from the old module if it still works.
      The only thing that needs learned if the old module is dead is the ride height settings and that does need done correctly at a dealer.

      Personally I'd like to see a video on how to copy the old coding from a working module to a new one.
      I own a W212 E550 with Airmatic and it's acting up when cold out (it sets itself in sport mode and won't come out) and I was playing around in Xentry but couldn't find any option for coding a new module in without having to connect to MB servers for SCN coding. I read that a few people managed to copy the software from their ECU in Vediamo but I'm concerned with using it since it's very easy to screw something up if you don't know what you're doing.
      I might just buy a new Airmatic control unit and have someone with access to a MB account code it to the car, but it would be nice if I could find a way to do it myself.

      Ok I will see if this can be done, I was thinking of an older model, almost ALL new models that use xentry are scn and cvn coded. Models like 204,166,212,218 , so ill give it a shot in my simulator.

      No problem man, that adds to the appeal of an honest how to tutorial.
      I was playing with the simulator this morning but couldn't find anything. Any time I get close to initialisation of control unit in the adaptations menu Xentry tries to get me to log on to MB.
      I also realised you're presenting DAS in your video, the W212 doesn't show up in there anymore, it's moved to Xentry. I think it would be easier to copy coding from old to new modules in pre W212 chassis with DAS.
      I love the W212 but I hate the coding limitations they put in it. I get that coding can be difficult, but at least give me the option to try and do it without having to connect to a server (and pay the crazy fees).

      Other than that only the dealer can do this.

      Basically offline is done on fax. You print out a form and fax it Into mercedes help desk, they fax you back numbers to manually code. I cannot do that with mine. Not unless hooked to a car and I only have my sds for simulator to help diagnose codes.

I have a C4 duplexer and 2016 SDS however not familiar with the whole coding process or if indeed my version of Star can do it. Hope that all is well with you?

      there is a function to swap over coding, or go into the current coding and take photos. its basically setting things on and off based on car options.

      Hi Dr Lou! Hope all is well with you? Hadn't realise that I'd had the SL parked up so long until reading your reply.
      OK! So I did look into the coding for the front passenger SAM on my 09 SL 350, but there didn't seem much that could be changed. My replacement SAM is the same part number as the old one (which I still have) However having fitted the new (but used) SAM I have a whole raft of faults!!!
      "The nominations to the academy for outstanding faults in an SL are...." (To be read with an Oscars style of voice).
      Brake Pad wear. New Pads 3000 miles ago
      Brake Service Warning. (Gulp! Hopefully not an SBC fault)
      Low Washer Fluid. Washer bottle full to the top
      No Windscreen Wash. (But wipers and headlamp wash fine)
      No DAB radio. (FM MW LW CD and USB connection fine)
      PSE Pump continually running (fine previous to change)
      Footwell courtesy lights always on when ignition on but off when courtesy lights (door open) come on (operating back to front)
      Am sure there's probably some other stuff going on that I've missed but they seem to be the obvious ones.
      What I'm hoping is that I didn't trash the cabling re-fitting the replacement SAM, but the fact that the interior footwell lights are doing the opposite of what they should leaves me scratching my head. Plus the empty washer bottle and brake pad warnings make me wonder also. I've read so much contradictory stuff online about the SAM. There is some suggestion that if it's not coded correctly then you get a whole bunch of faults. At present I've got the PSE pump out of the car as I originally thought that in itself was faulty. The only issue I found was a broken pipe outlet on the body but fixed that. But with all the other faults and the potential for the SAM to be causing schizzle I don't want to pay big money for a PSE pump I might not need. I'm trying not to wade back into removing the SAM because the wiring is so tight until I've had another look at it with "Star" and maybe diagnosed the coding. When I initially looked at it with "Star" after first fitting it didn't show any faults with the SAM, so I assumed job done!
      So Jedi Master! Any thoughts? Do you think poking at the SAM with star is barking up the wrong tree and if not could you point me in the right direction of some reliable instructions on how to use "Star" to interrogate it please.
      I replaced the old SAM because "Star" said it couldn't communicate with it and it needed to be replace although I had no issues with the car...... Swapping it out was a PTA and now I'm wishing I hadn't bothered!!

    Does the Star Diagnostic system from ebay performs the same as the one supplied by Mercedes?

      Its the exact same machine. The differences are you cannot program or software update anything because you dont have access to mercedes servers. The ebay ones have a few more options unlocked in the settings which is dangerous to those that read forums and want to mess with codings for whatever reason. But yes they are the same thing we use in the dealer.

I need to do suspension calibration on my W222 and was wondering if I have to have the MB diagnostic or can I use other softwares for it too like Launch or Autel? Is there anything like auto level calibration and does the wheel have to be on an alignment bay for true level?

      @@nightrider8918 no one ever has to to level calibration. That’s something no one ever needs to mess with unless they entered calibration mode on accident. I personally get frustrated when I hear people talk about level calibration because its the most Misunderstood thing and it never fixes anything. But to answer your question yes xentry can do it as well as higher end launch models and autel. But, you wont be able to do it successfully because of the measurements the aftermarket scanners ask for. I just fixed a client of mines, if I said that right, his abc was off because he or another shop entered calibration mode for whatever reason and it wasnt performed 100% so the right front was super low and the left rear was super high.

      @@MasterTechLou The vehicle was performing rubbish, the ride was really harsh and does not feel like air ride at all, excessive body roll and I tend to feel every bump on the road, took it to 3 different Mercedes dealerships and they all came back stating the car is fine, some technicians at Mercedes say that they haven't driven a S class before and can't tell the difference, this is in UK and I am gobsmacked to hear such remarks from master technicians at Mercedes. So I tried to play around with the car and made the drive better but it is not 100%.

    Hi I have the following codes P0201-001 and P0453 Short Circuit to positive Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor using a iCarsoft MBV2.0 and I have changed the Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor. Where should I be looking?

      Carol White sorry I don’t know why I did not get an email of your comment. You need to check your wiring from the engine control unit to the fuel pressure sensor. Most times the sensor has failed. But this can also be a wiring issue. If you need help still let me know

    Is this scanner capable of recording transmission data on a timeline for gear selected, shift points, vehicle speed, rpm?

      that is not something I remember it doing, when we diagnose trans issues we first look at adaptation times for each gear and then try and readapt and then if the adaptation values are out of spec we know if its mechanical issue or not.

      Training manual you say? I can hear every Mercedes tech laughing at the sound of that. Its trial by fire with us. Ive taught myself after trial and error and constantly using it to see its capabilities. Im sure there might be some form of training material but none that ive ever seen.

      @@MasterTechLou I understand we have to learn through many many clicks, mistakes and frustration. But I guess Mercedes doesn't want their mechanics in Mercedes shops to suffer like we do. I'm pretty sure there are internal Mercedes classes for their mechanics or something like that where they teach how to use all their software.

      @@MasterTechLou Oh wow, it's hard to believe Mercedes did such poor job here. Sometimes I asked myself how they were supposed to use this software when it has sooo poor UX and UI. I.e. yesterday I tried to find some info about the location of radio and GPS antennas in my CLS W219 and I spent half an hour searching WIS before I quit. I'm going to install Android head unit and I'd like to reuse stock antennas and first step is to locate where its wiring is hooked to the car. I guess I have to remove liner in my trunk just to have better look and idea...

      @@NoWheelDrive ok so look in group 82 for those, but we use another function called star finder. its the wiring diagrams and location finder for the cars.

      With fault codes, you can look up engine and transmission, but not for all models, it is tricky, use the ** signs, so like start with ad07.10** see what pulls up, get tricky with them and the positions you will see lots of hidden gems in wis.

      For some reason I can’t transfer from Xentry to Wis. ( some kind of soft. glitch) Than when I start the wis on its own I don’t see an option to search by the fault code.

      There is no option to search by fault code. Try opening wis and then using xentry. Mine seems to do the same most likely due to the bootlegging of it. But when it shows you the wis document number you can use that.

    I had xentry check of my 2019 E300 , all passed including SRS, could it fail to detect if airbags are disconnected, and no warning appears on instrument cluster?

      no, you will get immediate warnings and codes for airbag items that are disconnected.

    i see a lot of them trying to find the one like yours i see one for 879.00 and by the way i have a 02 s430 mercedes having problem with limp mode stuck in 2nd gear i replace the valve body and everything with it check transmission fluid ,i have the x431 v scanner i delete the codes but they come back would your scanner program the tcm and other stuff thank you

      kennedy shorter this tcm cannot be programmed. And no these scanners cannot program or software update. All the star diagnosis do the same just different platforms. Choose which you like.

      yes, you will need to get a fiber optic bypass loop, and use the start to remove the coding in the instrument cluster and the central gateway maybe and lastly the command.

      Karl Watson you cannot lower the car. You can buy adjustable links for the level sensors and trick the suspension but you cannot trick it with star. NEVER enter the calibration process. Only a dealer alignment rack and rommess gauge can align the system.
