I have a Thinktool Pro (although I kinda wish I'd bought the Pros, I like the topology), it's based off the launch software I'm told, I also have the Xentry on a Lenovo Thinkpad I got with a Benzninja membership. The passthru is the chinesium variety. I also have a Snap-on Solus and original Modis, I only use the Modis for the scope. But an thinking of selling snap-on Solus as it sets communication codes just plugging it in my 14 W212 and will not connect, calls for an S44 key. I have other cars too, 06 Hyundai Santa Fe and a 04 Jeep WJ. If I travel I put the Thinktool in the boot with my tool bag.
Please, what do you advise me for programming and testing? Is it on an Intel device or a C4?

Invaluable information, thank u MTL! Do you know if the Topdon Phoenix Plus has airmatic tests similar to Xentry? I'm not talking just level adjustments, etc. I'm talking about the diag tests to test for leaks/etc. thanks!

Great vid. I would love to see a video where you explain the diagnose with xentry in detail for one particular control module / issue. Lets say you have a malfunctioning right power window. How do you use xentry in order to diagnose, understand and fix the issue...
if you watch my autel video, I do that on my van, its going to be the same process with the xentry, but I can do that. I will have to find the right problem at the right time, or just make one up.

Hmm, I would say it’s possible if you knew what gateway module was used from what chassis. Or maybe its even an option to read, as the scanner does have sprinter, smart, busses, and engines. So maybe?
I have a Xentry, my daily driver is a Autel Elite. I have used Farsight, Launch/Matco, Autologic, 1,2 and 3, VAG, Porsche, Snap On and others. If I would have to buy only 1 scanner, It would an Autel with a subscription. I have programmed led headlights,, ABS, transmissions, VW DPF's Bimmer transfers cases, light switches etc. The Autel falls short on soft top, roll bars, pneumatics and doesn't even scan a 96 sl500 129.068! Just some that come to mind.

You can change mileage with an Xtool D8.
Thanks Lou for another helpful and very informative video ! how does the Xentry get the updates and how often the software needs to be updated? I heard that the ones sold on ebay won’t update so whatever version you buy, you would be stuck with that version until you buy a whole new Xentry with a new software. Any advice on where to buy or on how keep Xentry software up to date? Can I buy it from you 😇🙏
Updating is not needed. If you buy one now with lets say 12/22 software installed. Its good for all cars from now all the way back. Only updates we get in the dealer are for new models plus any software patches for the new update. I would tell you that once you buy it youre good for only a few years afterwards because the starkey will expire. But we usually just change the date ln the scanner and it operates again. Wish I could provide a solid seller but I myself havent bought one in years. Pretty sure I got mine from mbstartool.com 🤔

They dont update because they are cracked versions that run in virtual machine.

Understood, I'm going to try to download the app and try reaching you that way. Have a lot questions about my Mercedes and not sure what scanner to buy to get you the info you need to help me. I do a lot of work on classic cars and all types of motorcycle but this car is foreign to me. I'd like to give you a run down on what's going on with this car and some history on it but not sure this is the place to do it. Some aftermarket scanners will read old module SCN programming and copy/clone SCN to the new module.
Some vci adaptors with Xentry over passthru will not access SBC and Engine control module.
If I am able to buy a genuine Star C4 (used of course), and buy a Startekinfo subscription, can I then program modules? Thanks.
No, the scanner will have to be leased from Mercedes. The tablet itself has to be registered with them. Im not 100% on this, I can inquire. But not sure they will respond to this as we are only supposed to use tech support for our tech issues. But I will try and get absolutes on that.

I do not offer these as I don’t have the equipment to do so. But I have a friend in Georgia that just got into this. When I can learn more about it I may venture down that path.

Search for them online. There will be a few stores that sell them. They are bootlegged and some have small issues from what ive experienced but if you read reviews and do your homework you can find some decent ones. Check Mercedes forums as well.

Well, I don’t know what you consider cheap. But when you get into programming and coding scanners its In the thousands range. And not one scanner will be able to do all makes and models. All modules necessary. Plus if you buy used, or from non authorized seller you might not get full functions or support. So sift youtube vids on scanner danner, farm project, super mario, see what scanners they are using to program. I personally am just getting into the aftermarket stuff. So I cant say what will absolutely work.

Hey Lou, I left the Benz dealer recently worked there for 5 years and have a few Benz’s in our family I’ve been looking for a cracked version or bootleg version of xentry but not sure where to get it, do you know where I could get a tablet and a version of xentry would be much much appreciated thank you! Great video.

How do I know which autel to buy? To able to see the options you have on your autel. So many different choices
@@richietorres8308 a lot of the differences are just the physical differences. Theres really only 4 levels of scanners.
Basic obd
All systems with non bi directional control
All systems with by directional control
All the above plus programming and coding options.
my otofix d1pro is fraction of the price of the exntry but it capable of doing and look the same as the autel ,its capable of programming live data coding more bt ,and you get same results the only thing i miss is not having a wiring diagram ,the ability of knowing the circuit ,if you know that info can read wiring diagrams you can fix most any car..yes it takes longer without the help but cost that the exntry cost you could subscribe to multiple info sites and still only cost half the price then get full programer /and have change in the pocket, its sometime not the price of a unit but knowing how to use it ,all said like your info

YOU MUST have Xentry for benz or you will find yourself LOST. Launch, hands down for sideline scanner. and i have autel IM 608 and CGDI-MB and PRO for keys and module programming , Autel IM608 sits in the box. It sucks.
I might get flank for this and I don't own one yet but I'm looking at the xtool a30m as it's bi directional with no update fees compared to the physical tablet scan tool.

Little confused here. So the Xentry is subscription only?? ($100 month?] Or the clones will work fine without the subscription?? ? I've heard the clones don't work and why u can't buy them used. Pretty weird.
Xentry you can buy bootlegged. No subscription. Nor can you get one with a bootleg one. If you are a shop you can lease one through mercedes but its like 14k a year. And clones/bootlegged ones do work they are out there everywhere. Just the longevity is not guaranteed

INPA for the older ones and ISTA for the newer ones. The multiplexer for ISTA is called ICOM. You can use a cheap USB2OBD adapter via Ediabas software when you only do diag but not programming. For some newer models you can use a ENET cable.
ISTA-D as a diagnostic SW, ISTA-P as a programming SW. Paired to ICOM HW or newer ones use ENET I believe.

Hello, it cannot enable something that is not equipped, if you add it, you MAY be able to go into settings and coding and turn it on, but most of the time we have to update the system on the back end in a system called vedoc before the scanner can allow it to function.

It is just because you you do not use the offline programming. I can change the VIN on any modules with XENTRY.

@@MasterTechLou With Xentry you can change Vin in modules as you want. You have to go to the right path to do it. I do not want to do traning on Xentry here. With Autel you can not change Vin on a BMS like Xentry. Xentry can remove shipping mode. If you want to remove the 12V battery for long term on a Hybrid or an electric mercedes or a smart you can not do it with most scan tool. With other scanner you do not have the troubleshooting path as you can have with Xentry. to programme vehicle with Xentry offline you have to get the software part number.

Well pretty obvious no multi-brand tool will ever replace dedicated OEM tool. Man must know what he is going to work on, do I take in everything from the street? Then OEM tool is useles. Do I do 99% one brand? I get OEM tool for that brand. Easy peasy. What is your opinion Autel vs, Launch flagship models? Looking for a multibrand tool and BOSCH KTS while superior also has mandatory yearly updates, will not work without them.

How can this be a fair test when one machine is doing an actual scan and the other is just running a demo??
The video is showing autels capabilities to oem data, actuations and how its laid out similar. The simulation on the mercedes scanner is the exact same as if it were plugged into the car. The reason for this video was due to the amount of questions I get whether to buy a Mercedes Benz scanner or aftermarket scanner and since most choose autel, thats why I chose autel. Hope that answers your question.
I'm sorry but your consequences are a littlebit obvious. Autel is a generic and cheap ($500...800) device for mostly amateurs, Xentry is a MB specific pro service device, it knows much more about Mercedes cars and most probably it's much-much more expensive than Autel.
I think you missed the point of my video. This video is tailored to people that commonly ask me what should I buy the autel or the Mercedes scanner. I was showing, how nearly identical the autel was in comparison to the Mercedes scanner but then I also show its shortcomings. This is an a which is better, more of a will it work in place of.

I just can't imagine that a small Chinese firm manufactures a generic OBD2 tester for 100 brands 1000 cars, and that device is the same good (almost) for testing fancy complicated $150...200,000 AMG M.B. cars as an original M.B. OBD2 scanner software. Maybe your Xentry is a Chinese counterfeit device + SW ? Is that possible ?
Do you have a monthly/yearly subscription at M.B. ? Is that a Xentry Diagnosis Kit 4 supported by M.B. ?
@@telelaci2 if you are under the impression that the more a car costs, the more complicated it is, you are way mistaken. I work at a MB dealer and yes its an MB dealer scanner. And yes no one will ever be exact to a factory scanner. It was merely to help someone understand the differences and see which would be better suited for them. The biggest differences are in the diagnosis and programming features. Scanners dont diagnose cars. Technicians do. And knowing how to use the tools. Theres a reason I made this video and why I chose these two to compare. You dont have to agree with anything I say or do. Thats fine. But its a very common question in the mercedes community.

Usually it's a luxury car with tons of extras. If you are under the impression that the Mercedes makes simple and cheap cars with minimal effort, for masses, it's fine by me, that is your opinion I respect.

Chinese little firms like Autel , XTool, Foxwell ... so on, they reverse engineer the original scanner of the brand. How could that be better than the original factory scanner? Not mentioning the differences between Made in China, Made in Japan, Made in Germany, Made in USA. The protocols, functions are not documented, they are not public, most of them proprietary and specific for the given brand. Reverse engineering is not legal in many countries. You can subscribe for technical support at Mercedes (and at other brands). They will help you to diagnose the problems with the car. For good greasy money you can get technical data and support for repairing, flowchart for troubleshooting, methods step by step, tricks and tips. Autel will support you, how to use the scanner device, that's the most you can get, they won't help you with any specific car. If we put these details together, it will be obvious the usual rule, you get what you pay for. If you are a excited amateur, Autel is more than enough, it's an awesome thing. If you are pro, a M.B. dealer's garage you should select the brand's solution. Actually it's not even a choice, in my country it's a must, you must follow the Brand's/Company's rules and policies, you must use the Company's official testing devices. Please don't get offended, I think this is an interesting video, but I just expected your conclusions from the first second.

Make a key with that autel thing! LMAO it won't do it anyway! _ most of what you are showing any bidirectional will do as most of it is in the car! .. this is silly .. You have to have IM608 for any key! AND I always end up using my CGDI-MB for that, It is much better. AUTEL IM608 stays in the box.
whats the total cost for getting everything you would need to makes keys/pair with EIS/ESL?
Ive read up on it & watched videos but everyone seems to use different configurations of hardware
I'm trying to make up my mind on buying these, but most of the software is Chinese cloned, the EBay sellers never tell you the full story.
The customs and import dutys are added at the checkout and blows the price out.
Then there's freight at over $200 through EBay, the sellers won't post to your post office.
Crappy laptop's and Chinese clones no thanks.

You just cannot compare autel and xentry. Autel can be used for a lot of cars and can do different things. Xentry can only be used for Mercedes Benz cars, trucks and buses. It can do anything possible on a Mercedes Benz. It can program keys, it can program new modules but they have to be bought from the dealership not used ones. It cannot swap VIN numbers on modules, because that is illegal and it cannot program used modules because they want to sell new ones from dealership. Its simple math. What this guy is showing it makes no sense and it cannot be compared. Autel or any other device is not more powerful than Xentry for Mercedes Benz. These videos need to be banned really.

I can tell you everything face to face too. I dont really mind. I am telling you that you are wrong and you are butthurt. If you gave 20+ years as a mechanic i feel so sorry for all the people that wasted money in your workshop. You cannot compare the 2 tools together. Its as simple as that. One is chinese and the other one is the OEM tool. How does it all make sense for you? There is a reason why every workshop owns the OEM diagnostic device for the brand they work on the most. As for me not touching a diagnostics tool i can say that i own more tools than you. Its just so sad really.

I cannot help with that, there are many places to buy xentry just make sure to check reviews and forums for advice .
