Identifying which pastels of each value I will use to start, making my marks along the shape of the apple, just to name a couple. I just started an 8 week class in oil pastels this week, so this was helpful. I'm going to be honest, I was a bit disappointed that you didn't do much blending to make it look like the picture you showed at the beginning. But as a content creator to myself, I understand the desire to keep the videos to a reasonable length. In our first class, we were taught to blend using an old oag and I really like that method.

    Stunning as always! I need to remember to like the videos I watch! One could argue a strictly linear approach with hard pastels or just pencils is drawing and the side strokes is painting, the mix is a combination of painting and drawing? Interesting... An apple was actually the first thing I ever painted! I didn’t realize that graphite repelled pastel during the time so it’s uhh interesting 🤔 😬 ha!

      Yes, you can use student grade pastels They don't have the same vibrancy but would work fine for this lesson. Also, I never spray fixative on my final paintings, but I seal them in clear plastic bags from www.clearbags.com, or I keep them in between pages in a sketchbook with sheet of tracing paper between to protect them. What pastels you use oil or chalk?

    Truly enjoyed this video. I was waiting for you to start blending, but you didn't. Wondering why? I am going buy pastels today. Thank you.

      Thanks so much Ted! When you over blend you actually crush the crystal elements in the soft pastels and the color becomes dull. I like to let the pastels blend themselves mostly.

      Thanks Nelly! I use various brands, but I always advise to buy the good artist's grade pastels. It really makes such a difference rather than student grade. Also, I find a really good set for starters is the Unison 120 half stick set. Not super cheap, but it has so many colors and values available to create paintings of different subject matter.

    I would love to join your pattern page but at this time I can only do $5. I’m recently disabled and have not worked in almost a year. Will I be receiving instructions on “ how to “ of pastels? I love the medium’s vibrancy but am clueless on how to begin 😕 You are a blessing Susan. I enjoy your work and your spirit 🙏🏽

      Hi Rosabel, I have a special category for patrons who are limited financially. Send me an email at SusanJjenkins@gmail.com and I will tell you how you can join for one dollar a month. I’m so glad you are enjoying Monet café.

    Is the toned paper instead of an under painting?

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  2 года назад

      Yes, this is a piece of gray paper made by Strathmore. I often like to work on a paper that has a slight color to it.

    Great tutorial but 1 thing I learned when painting - if your apple is lopsided, find a more perfect apple or people will think you can’t draw and it will lessen the value of your painting
    You can clearly draw and are an established artist but for those starting out, start with a good, proportionate subject

  • @rooty

    What do people use an apple for beginner painting drawing? It's a very complex shape, light interacts with it in a complex way, and its colouring is complex even before you take light and shadows into account. I would have thought the best thing to start with would be a cube, then a ball, before trying to apply what you've learnt to the complex shapes that fruits have.

    Grazie mille Susan, anche se per principianti, non fa mai male, ogni tanto rivedere concetti di base che comunque non sono mai così scontati. L'unica cosa che non capisco è perché non ci sono i sottotitoli automatici, io li uso molto con la traduzione visto che non so l'inglese, quindi forse sono persa qualcosa di quello che hai spiegato . :-)

    What happens to the dust you blow off your drawing?

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  3 года назад

      Pastels stay on the surface for the most part but especially with papers that have a sanded surface. Some of the masters who painted in pastels still have paintings in great shape today... one of the longest lasting mediums when cared for correctly, great question by the way.

    I tried your method. And it works. However I haven't got the bright colors that you have. I'm still need to find some. But anyway. It looks like a pumpkin because of the colors. And shape.
