I've been so blessed to meet many new Beginner pastel artists through comments in my lessons here on RUclips. I hope this lesson gives lots of easy instruction covering many basic artistic principles. HAPPY PAINTING!!
I think we are all so blessed to be able to learn so much from you about art and more! Thank you so much for everything that you do. Also, I am also from Western North Carolina and though I lived in Southern California for several years I am happily back home in NC. I would love to get together and paint some time if you do venture back this way.
Haven’t seen an art video in awhile. Depression has gotten to me and I’ve basically given up on getting anything that would help me get back into teaching myself how to draw and such. Being on disability there isn’t a whole lot at the end of the month and when there is, there’s always something of higher priority then pen and paper. Anyway, it’s nice to see a video after so much time.
Bless you, Ron. Having a life that has been topsy turvy over the years, I am always tender for those with challenging circumstances. I pray my lessons can bring some light and joy to you! Art is truly healing
Hello Ron, Jerry here. Please forgive me for any trespasses that I my create. I have a tip for you. Empathy, is my strongest suit; never would I put on the garment of sympathy. Do something to help someone else in their hard time, there's a lot out there today. As an example... Sometimes in my area during the summer, Hooker's find there way into many parts of town. Many get sick from the heat, and lack of food and water. As a former prison minister, I've learned about needs. Sharing a bottle of water and a energy bar, buffer's and clears the mind. I have phone number where they can find help. The sad part is, I've seen the before and after pictures... Heart breaking. Tip..! In helping someone else, the rewards are great. All you have to do is believe. He who inspired this conversation is there for everyone, including you. In the name of Jesus, the living Christ.
Keep your head up Ronald! Something I have to tell myself EVERY DAY is that tomorrow will be better then today.. I to myself have fallen into a pretty bad depression considering I'm also dealing with postpartum depression. And the only reason I'm gonna tell you about what I'm going through I'm hopes that it helps you see that your not alone.. but 5 years ago my son's father and his new wife took him away from me for no reason but his wifes dad is in the military with like secret services kinda deal so needless to say he jsd good $ and also alot of connections so i have not been able to even see or hold my son in my arms for over 5 years and they just live the next town over, but couldnt afford a attorney so i got screwd ... Well then I get with my soon to be ex husband and he is very physically and emotionally abusive not to mention a heroin addict who got me using just so he could...left his ass of course.. then I meet the love of my life and things were perfect we were living in a beautiful townhome and got surprised with our beautiful daughter after being told that my son was a miracle baby and notnto expect another,... So I named her Estrella star In Spanish cause she is the light during my darkness... Well DCFS takes her right after birth cause she was born with drugs in her system 😮💨.. but in my defense I didn't know I was pregnant till I was already 7 1/2 months along so it would not be enough time before birth to have safely got 100% clean but I did slow down tremendously... Well then right after that my man gets arrested and was in jail for 4 months and then forced to a rehab for another 6 or 7 months and I told him that he would out grow me but he assured me he would never.. weeelll he did.. he just left me about a month ago after I held it down for him out here. Paid a 2,300 a month rent up till a month or so ago I got evicted... But I was supposed to go to treatment to get my daughter back too but dealing with being evicted and alone all the time I let my depression win and now the love of my life acts like everything he felt before was all clouded by the drugs... So now I have lost literally EVERYTHING and just trying to stay strong and take it one day at a time so I can get at least my babies.. I am currently 10 days sober.. I feel like shit but I will keep fighting.. just keep fighting Ronald there is always some type of star that will come just when you need it to be the light in you, just accept it and don't try to resist cause once you surrender yourself to change you will notice a few more smiles everyday I promise 😌
@@JLPrice-kc2uy. Thank you for replying to Ron. Hope he took your advice and experience.. God bless you Ron... but I just wanted to say thank you for giving your experience sir.. it has opened my eyes too. Much greatful 🙏 ✨. May God bless you too. And may I have your courage in love . Amen
literally one of my favorite art videos on youtube... thank you so much Susan!! Im a young artist who was planning to start using soft pastels and this helped me SO MUCH :DDD
You are just such a great teacher. You keep it simple but easy to understand. Some online just show off what they can do which leaves us feeling hopeless
This was one of the best art videos I’ve ever watched. So informative!! I kept saying throughout the entire video what a great lesson this is. I’m applying this to my brand new oil pastels I bought. Can’t wait. Again, amazing video! Thank you!
YAY!! Thank you! @linahirsh241 Comments like this are part of why I do this. I love inspiring others, especially in their art journey! Thank you for your sweet comment!
Thank you for this wonderful starting point - I’ve been sitting on my lovely new box of pastels for ages (because the approach is so different to my limited watercolour palette), but this was the trigger that got me started. I love them!

Some folks in the Appalachians, only get sunshine at certain hours of the day... Well, that my explanation and I'm sticken to it... I've struggled for knowledge, and I'm sure you have too. Plus, you've never struck me as a person, who would deny bread and offer a Stone. Your love for your work has moved the hands on the clock many times over. Truly, you have discovered the joy of painting; in sharing with others. 💜
Right on!! Sharing with others is the joy of painting for me. And I know what you mean about only getting sun during certain hours of the day in the mountains. ;)
I am watching this video on Oct 12, '24. Hurricane Helene has hit the mountains where your family is from and Hurricane Martin has just gone across FL. I am sending you and your family prayers that all are safe. I have just started looking at pastels and ordered a set. I hope to see more of your videos. I appreciate the beginner friendly information.
How sweet of you to think of me. Many of the areas from my family's heritage in NC are devastated. So heartbreaking. We didn't have too much damage here in my area of FL but many near me totally flooded. Prayers for so many who experienced loss. Thanks for you comment Christi.
How wonderful! I loved this video! I am so glad I came across this video! I can’t do these studies! How fun and they are so beautiful! Thank you for sharing!
These are wonderful. Sometime I am going to try these pictures on my own too. I am new to pastels and love the look. Thank you so much to helping the beginner. God bless.

Beautiful! I will try these too - thank you for helping the beginners 🙏🌟 you answered questions I'd been wondering for so long, like how to show distance and how to get the glow of light that I love so much 😊
What a brilliant video - learnt so much about composition, colour and pastels - loved watching every minute of it and can't wait to try your little paintings and my own studies with this information. Thank you.
This was so helpful! I have pastels that I have never felt like I really knew how to work with them. I learned so much and can't wait to get them out this afternoon. Thank you!
I’ve had oil pastels and paper for over a year. I would enjoy just putting color on paper, but sometimes felt like I could only do abstract art and could not get more satisfied since I do not know how to draw. Your tutorial has meant so much to me because now I was able to paint this landscape. I feel the proudest of myself artistically in years. Thank you so much!

This is an absolutely brilliant video! It has been many years since I have used pastels and I was very impressed by your use of the color wheel and choice of colors. I am so happy to have found your outstanding channel and look forward to trying yummy pastels again 😊
Tried soft pastels for the first time today, following your tutorial. Simply love it!! But I definitely worked better with the night landscape! Thank You!!!
I absolutely loved this video and all it’s information and content!! Thank you for sharing! There are so many color theory videos out there but I have yet to see one where we are actually shown some combinations in action!!! The breakdown of how you do your studies is super informative! I’m new to pastels. I’ve been trying my hand with oils and chalk pastels and I’m so happy I’ve come across your channel!
I must say, the video you created is truly magnificent. Although English is not my first language, I find myself watching it repeatedly with English subtitles to fully grasp and absorb the valuable teachings you provide. As a beginner, it has been immensely helpful to me. Thank you very much!
Thank you so much, @ching-yilin4836! Your comment blessed me. Comments like this are a part of why I love doing this so much! I live to spread the word of Christ and share in other's art journey's! Thank you so much for the support!
This video was packed with info! Effective demo of the purpose of under painting. I loved the night scene; never would have thought to vary the color and intensity of the fireflies, but it makes sense and looks great. I use Tombow markers for illustration, but would not have thought of them as tools for value studies; excellent! (Just getting back to pastels after a long hiatus, and am more serious about it this time.) Thank you, Susan!

Dear Susam I'm so happy that I recently discovered you on RUclips, while recovering from covid. I have done pastels on vacations (wet oil panels in a plane don't work ;-)), but now I really learn how to use them. I can't wait till I'm fit enough to start again. In the meantime, thank you so much for your lessons!!!
Thank you for sharing and teaching our beginner pastel artist. It has been a very frustrating journey for me until I started practicing your teachings! Still learning 😅
Thank you for making this amazing video. I found the little tricks, like light-medium-dark, far cold, and shadow cold, are really useful, which can be applied to any color painting. My friend just sent me a set of soft pastels. I am excited to start working with them!
Thank you for this! Perfect lesson and exactly what I was wanting to learn but didn't know I needed to know. ❤ Most videos for beginners refer to "elementary art lessons" and don't take the time to cover the rules of art so for those of us who have never had any art lessons in their life thank you thank you thank you !! Lots of great info in this video
I have owned pastels for many years but never really used/know how to use them. This was my first lesson and it is excellent! Thank you. Yes I had my pastels out and followed your first sketch, though it is still incomplete, I understand how to complete it. Your third sketch ah, night! I used to know fireflies in North Caroline, but I've lived in Finland since the 1980's and not only are there no fireflies, currently it's the season of the midnight sun, and when the moon returns to visible it will be autumn, then winter with snow. But thank you for the fireflies!
Love this idea. I know generally more light for videos is better, but on white paper it is almost harder to see if the light is to bright. just a thought. Great instructional video
hey, your video was so informative. i have to make an art portfolio from my school and im using oil pastels to do 5 paintings, this video really helped. as hard as i try i sometimes just don't stick to the color pallet and end up using white and black, but i've noticed that you stick to the color pallet throught the painting. im gonna try doing that in my portfolio. thankyou
Thank you so much, @nicoleandspencer! I'm so glad you liked it! Thank you for asking!!! I've included a link here that I think is a great set for beginners and professionals, alike! It has a great variety of colors! Hope this helps and HAPPY PAINTING! ruclips.net/video/MFX_TCl0KjE/видео.html
You could use pencils as well, the markers are just a quick and easy way to have different values. I sometimes use pencils in a similar way, but just apply more pressure to get darker values.
I loved this video! When my pastel set comes, I'm coming back to this for the technical lessons. This is a great base to start with. Thank you so much for this lesson. I still am struggling with the underpainting concept. Could you explain that one a little bit more? Is that the same as just a first layer? Thanks again! This was awesome!!
Yes, Rilee... I think this is a great lesson to start with. And you are correct that an underpainting is essentially the first layer. But there are some good general techniques for this first layer that can really effect your painting. Sometimes you can simply tone your surface to begin with.. (I sometimes like starting with vibrant colors). Or sometimes you might like to block in big shapes with local color (the color that is naturally in the scene). Other times you can block in big shapes with complementary color (the color opposite on the color wheel.). It can feel a bit overwhelming at first, but just know that there are no hard fast rules about underpaintings and there a lots of creative options. Now you have me wanting to make a video about all of the different underpainting techniques!
Hello, i have a question. could i just use black for the closest trees in the painting insted of a really dark green for the same effekt(because i would have to buy the darker green seperately) and you used a second green in your grass that you said was lighter. But my lighter Green that i have is also warmer does this matter? Thank you for the awesome Tutorial!!!
Greetings from Western N.C. 🙂Thank you SO much for sharing this! I need to practice value. Plus, as part of homeschool I'm teaching the 7 elements of Art - our next chapter is observing color, followed by value. Can't wait to practice using these ideas & then share with my kid 😀 (she really loves realism so value is going to be a must). Also, your studies are absolutely beautiful!
Hi Melanie, what a blessing to live in the mountains! I also homeschooled my son and it was such a blessing. I have lots of lessons on color and value on my RUclips channel. I think I have a playlist specifically on color. Here’s one of the videos that was rather enlightening… ruclips.net/video/iieYWnfb808/видео.html
I disscoverd today that watercolour paper blocks academy watercolor paper pad from the brand fine grade 100 % cotton boahong are working so very well for soft pastels. I paint whit acrylic paint as well so i had a block in my room already😁👍🏾🖐🏾 i love you,re landscape paintings

Dear Susam
I'm so happy that I recently discovered you on RUclips, while recovering from covid. I have done pastels on vacations (wet oil panels in a plane don't work ;-)), but now I really learn how to use them. I can't wait till I'm fit enough to start again. In the meantime, thank you so much for your lessons!!!
How wonderful that you are learning from my videos and I pray you get well soon sweetheart!
Thanks for the video!
Thank you for sharing and teaching our beginner pastel artist. It has been a very frustrating journey for me until I started practicing your teachings! Still learning 😅
Thank you! This was really inspiring :)
Thank you for this fantastic video.

Glad it was helpful!!!
Thank you! I have learned so much-needed 😊❤
You are so welcome! Blessings Kathleen!
I can’t wait to see this video!! I’m SO new to pastels! Thank you!
Thank you for making this amazing video. I found the little tricks, like light-medium-dark, far cold, and shadow cold, are really useful, which can be applied to any color painting. My friend just sent me a set of soft pastels. I am excited to start working with them!
Glad it was helpful! i’m excited you’re going to get started with soft pastels.
Thank you for this! Perfect lesson and exactly what I was wanting to learn but didn't know I needed to know. ❤
Most videos for beginners refer to "elementary art lessons" and don't take the time to cover the rules of art so for those of us who have never had any art lessons in their life thank you thank you thank you !! Lots of great info in this video
Your an amazing teacher
I have owned pastels for many years but never really used/know how to use them. This was my first lesson and it is excellent! Thank you. Yes I had my pastels out and followed your first sketch, though it is still incomplete, I understand how to complete it. Your third sketch ah, night! I used to know fireflies in North Caroline, but I've lived in Finland since the 1980's and not only are there no fireflies, currently it's the season of the midnight sun, and when the moon returns to visible it will be autumn, then winter with snow. But thank you for the fireflies!
Thank you so much, @susannekalejaiye4351! I'm so glad you liked it! Happy Painting!
Love this idea. I know generally more light for videos is better, but on white paper it is almost harder to see if the light is to bright. just a thought. Great instructional video
Thanks for that input, I'll have to keep that in mind!
Thank you!
Awesome @lydialangfordjoiner765, I appreciate that so much!

hey, your video was so informative. i have to make an art portfolio from my school and im using oil pastels to do 5 paintings, this video really helped. as hard as i try i sometimes just don't stick to the color pallet and end up using white and black, but i've noticed that you stick to the color pallet throught the painting. im gonna try doing that in my portfolio. thankyou
So much information here for beginners. So rich. T y

Thank you so much, @pepeibz21! I'm so glad you liked it! Happy Painting!
Thank you for this. I am just getting back into pastels. I do have a question. Why the markers for sketching instead of pencil?
You could use pencils as well, the markers are just a quick and easy way to have different values. I sometimes use pencils in a similar way, but just apply more pressure to get darker values.
Susan - what do you mean by "cooler colours"? Perhaps more towards the bluish tinge on the colour wheel? Thanks.
Yes, exactly! You got it!
Hello, i have a question.
could i just use black for the closest trees in the painting insted of a really dark green for the same effekt(because i would have to buy the darker green seperately)
and you used a second green in your grass that you said was lighter. But my lighter Green that i have is also warmer does this matter?
Thank you for the awesome Tutorial!!!
Yes… you absolutely could. Have fun!
@@monetcafe Thank you!!!
Another lesson on color… ruclips.net/video/k30AaNewjpo/видео.html
