Oil pastels are so convenient, little setup, versatile , and less mess. Wish I had discovered them before investing so much into materials for other mediums.
Quigley said he was using turpentine, actually, @@LoLFilmStudios. Then he stated baby oil is an option. Do note, though, that, to my knowledge, baby oil is not archival, so it's best avoided for serious artwork intended to be sold or simply to endure over the years.
I’ve just started playing with some oil pastels after someone gave me a package of them. Perfect timing to come across this video! Looking forward to having some fun with them!
Love this! Thank you for validating oil pastels! They are one of my favorite mediums and often get dismissed as a legitimate fine art medium. Will share this video with my students.
Very cool and inspirational. I'm going to experiment with baby oil, oil pastels and oil based colored pencils today. It is a messy medium though. I was leaving black marks wherever I walked and realized I had a piece of black crayon stuck on my shoe😂
I was stationed in Monterey and used to hear the seals barking every morning on the way to work. Unforgettable place, thank you for reminding me of it.
Thank you for making this video, there's not a lot on RUclips about oil pastels, they're a wonderful medium and should be elevated to beyond naive painting or children's painting, Oil pastels are much more than a crayon. Even a child's wax crayon can produce some wonderful results.
Fun video, great teaching on using the different techniques. I grew up in Monterey, haven't been back in 20 years. WOW does it look different from that photo. Great insight, and who knew Pentel pastels were such a great deal!
Thank you so much Tom, it’s always really really helpful and useful to watch you create these patterns and create with oil pastels too. I really really love ❤️ the painting at the end, it’s stunning too. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
I've been on my art journey with oil pastels since 2020 and somehow I didn't come across this video while I was searching for oil pastels tutorial. I also didn't know lots of ppl be looking at oil pastels as immature art tools or what... Then again, I shouldn't be surprised since ppl view coloured pencils like that as well. I guess I've been working with double the juvenile tools all these years. XD I love doing my arts with both coloured pencils and oil pastels. Everyone should try it out! Thank you for sharing these techniques!
I live about 3 hours away from Monterey and am pretty sure I've walked on that beach. Love your painting of it. Thanks for the tips! Looking forward to playing around with them a bit. :)
Thanks for this Tom! I did slow down your time lapse painting and tried to copy the scenary. I am new to oil pastels and the painting came out rather well :). Would be great to have some more live oil pastel painting tutorial !
Lately after struggling with my mental health I've returned to oil pastels instead of continuing with my usual media (oil, acrylic, watercolor). I find it freeing and it somehow lets me reconnect with my original feelings of wonder when I pursued art when I was a kid. People often think of pastels as some basic medium but I have always thought there is still so much that can still be discovered with oil pastels.
Monterey fabulous ...been will never forget ...you are a breath of fresh air....currant and extremely well explained a natural... keep going ...........
Thank you, i broke out a box of oil pastels i got for Christmas many years ago. Wow they are brilliant i have really loved using them, after blowing the dust off.
Thank you for sharing the techniques of how to use oil pastel in different effect. The demo painting in the last is beautiful, looked like an oil painting. I just taken a lesson of painting bear with oil pastel and I started loving to use oil pastel.
I just found out the OMS blending and decided to give oil pastels another try. That last technique looks interesting as well. Fun to be had relatively cheaply!
The last example is basically a trace monotype technique. I like drawing this way but I prefer to coat tissue paper with a fine layer of oil pastel(like a carbon copy sheet). The thinner the paper the finer the lines. Aluminum foil, plastic bags and tracing paper have nice effects too. It's tricky to get a nice even coat of pastel onto such thin paper, but with some effort it can be done...so the resulting lines transferred to paper aren't so 'clumpy' looking. Drawn lines can be rubbed or smeared once traced/transferred for tonal or softening effects. If you don't like the clumpy lines look you can either scrape the excess off with an x-acto knife or use masking tape to lift the excess off the paper. I like to use a ball point pen to draw onto the tissue paper which can achieve some surprisingly fine lines onto your paper.
Very interesting, I recently decided to get back in pastels to sort of decompress. In the past I always finger blended. I'm looking forward to trying some of these techniques.
Bought oil pastels last year, never used before, couldn’t use, clueless, thanks to your video now giving them another try, feeling a lot more confident now. Thanks 🦋
I really loved your video, thanks for doing this. I used to do oil pastels when I did A level, and I showed it to my daughter this morning who is using oil pastels for her art homework. She gasped when she saw the scraffito so you definitely made an impression! I’m going to buy some baby oil and find some white spirit in the garage so she can try some blending techniques. I heard you can also use a tortillon and a silicon pottery tool; I think I have some of those kicking about somewhere. Anyway, thanks for the video, it was really quick and to the point, which is good for kids short attention spans!
I love using tortillons (one color group for each point) and save my worn down ones for wider blending needs. I find the silicone pottery tool great to use, it will not absorb pastel and is easily wiped off. It can be used with intention to show blending lines for a purpose (eg veins in leaf, or multitude of tiny swirls to mimic many little flowers within a cluster).
I just got a „Beginner’s Set“ with several different kinds of colours for Christmas. There are pastell chalks, oil chalks, acryl colours, different pencils etc. I can’t draw or paint at all (yet)… as in, I know what I want to paint/draw, but when it comes to actually putting it on paper, I’m lost. BUT I hope it just takes practice. 🙂 I’m especially interested in Oil chalks, because you can stop painting whenever, make corrections etc.
Tom Quigley Art, thanks for what ways you did show oil pastel can be used to create artistic imagery. That said, I thought for sure you would also have shown, for example, blending with blending stumps, etc, until the oil pastel is so spread out & blended that that strategy facilitates other strategies to bring about realistic & even hyperrealistic artwork. This is the first time I'm visiting your channel, though, & so I don't know if you demonstrate such elsewhere on your channel, but, from what I've seen, you really seem to be inclined more to abstract art. That certainly broadens the possibilities as far as laying down your oil pastels are concerned, in so far as the imagery of abstract art tends to be more loose in form & hue. To each his own media, techniques, & satisfaction with outcome, though. At my channel, my only video featuring any of my artwork so far features an oil pastel nocturnal scene intending to depict the approach of Judas Iscariot & his torch-bearing, weapons-brandishing delusional mob from the perspective of a faithful disciple at the side of Christ Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. The piece itself is the size of a regular large poster paper, & I was able to frame it at an arts & craft store in a gorgeous frame that is itself nocturnal looking, so it was a perfect fit. You're welcome to check out the abovementioned brief video of said artwork. Thanks again for sharing.
I never thought other people looked down on oil pastels tbh, but now that i remember there was this dude once that said "oh is just pastels" when he looked at some that i borrowed to a grandma so she could paint a mandala book that i gave to her.
How are you blending so nicely?! Especially the first square that you did? I’ve had a terrible experience with Pentel, I brought one from a charity, half used but I found it super difficult to blend. Do you have any suggestion or tips?
Love this! Thank you. I bought some oil pastels recently with great images in my mind. Only to find that it looked like crayon! So I’m looking forward to playing with these techniques 😊
Hi, Just watched one of your videos for the first time. I am considering buying and using oil pastels so I found your video of great interest. I have a question. What sealer if any would you recommend? I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks, Dianne (Australia)
Oil pastels are so convenient, little setup, versatile , and less mess. Wish I had discovered them before investing so much into materials for other mediums.
Me too...oil pastels are much less expensive that other media, too.
Me too
Its nice to see other left handed artists 🥰
That last technique was particularly interesting as a way to achieve fine lines and marks.
Thanks for sharing.
For anybody who thinks oil pastels look juvenile. I've literally seen fantastic artwork done with Crayola products.
Did he blend using baby oil? ^^
@@LoLFilmStudios yep, baby oil out mineral oil & you can paint with oil pastels
And don't forget that oil pastels were made specifically for Picasso, to meet his requirements/desires.
Quigley said he was using turpentine, actually, @@LoLFilmStudios. Then he stated baby oil is an option.
Do note, though, that, to my knowledge, baby oil is not archival, so it's best avoided for serious artwork intended to be sold or simply to endure over the years.
I still think they look juvenile lol.
I’ve just started playing with some oil pastels after someone gave me a package of them. Perfect timing to come across this video! Looking forward to having some fun with them!
Me too! A friend of mine gave me some oil pastels as a birthday gift and I'm trying to dive myself into this world.
Good luck for the both of us :)
The last one is so clever! Never seen that before
Love this! Thank you for validating oil pastels! They are one of my favorite mediums and often get dismissed as a legitimate fine art medium. Will share this video with my students.
I like oil pastels and the way they smell as well- for me is a good memory there. The softness of texture and colour makes them a total joy to behold.
One of the best videos on oil pastel
Thanks Ebi 👍🏻

I have seeing oil pastels but have never used it this is my first time thank you so much it looked very helpful hopefully it is
At first, oil pastels are hard to handle, but with experience it becomes a favorite medium!
Fun video, great teaching on using the different techniques. I grew up in Monterey, haven't been back in 20 years. WOW does it look different from that photo. Great insight, and who knew Pentel pastels were such a great deal!
This is the perfect beginner step by step video I’ve seen
Nice landscape you made! Thanks for the tips, and also for not making the video unnecessary long.
Thank you so much Tom, it’s always really really helpful and useful to watch you create these patterns and create with oil pastels too. I really really love ❤️ the painting at the end, it’s stunning too. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
No worries mags, really appreciate you watching them and like the workshop 😊
I use oil pastels a lot in my abstract art. Great ideas for new ways to use them here.....thanks, Tom!
Amazing shot at 7:15. It looks like I am looking at a oil pastel beach from a hill.
cheers
Thank you! We’re working with oil pastel in school tmw and I had no idea where to start

Sophistication is a matter of the artist, not the materials. Actually coloured pencils can pair nicely with oil pastels, as well.
I didn´t know about the brush technique, back in primary I didn´t know much so thanks for sharing.
I live about 3 hours away from Monterey and am pretty sure I've walked on that beach. Love your painting of it. Thanks for the tips! Looking forward to playing around with them a bit. :)
Nice painting of the seaside. It looks like an impressionist style oil painting.
Just started using them and love them. Liked a couple of these techniques and can't wait to try them out.
Great stuff, have fun using them 👍🏻

Thanks, don’t worry I will be doing some more. Just had a busy few months. I will be back with a bang soon ✌🏻
Your demonstration is fascinating me...will try to draw with oil pastel! Thank you 😀❤

Thanks Pattie, that’s very kind of you.
just goes to show, you dont need expensive pastels to create beautiful art :)
Will do..... Stay safe here from the UK.🦋
A great tutorial. Many thanks. I am a recent convert to oil pastels - I just love how easy it is to blend them.
I just found out the OMS blending and decided to give oil pastels another try. That last technique looks interesting as well. Fun to be had relatively cheaply!
Yeah really cheap, hope you have fun exploring the material🙌
Super helpful - my kids loved it too.
THANKS TOM!😮

Thank you for the lesson
Excellent video! I love the medium!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it 🙌
The stick point tecnique(number3) was nice, since this material does not allow precision.
TY mister Tom.
New follower from the states. Actually sitting down with some PG Tips (those European genetics run deep) & watching your vids.

This is such a cool video!! Thankyou
It’s amazing work, WOW! How could I fix it, without using the highly toxic fixatives?
Wowooo!!! Thank you 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great video, do you have any videos which combine colour pencisl and pastels?
Thank you!
Just starting in oil pastels so this was quite informative!

thanks for the video- very informative/ have been thinking to try them out and now you have sealed the deal :P looks fun!
What type of fixative or varnish do you use? It's a question, thank you for your video and your answer.

Very useful tips
Nice! Thank you
Nice demo
I've always liked oil pastles hosntly. I even prefer it a bit more then soft or hard pastles for some reason
no chalk dust to inhale.
I never thought other people looked down on oil pastels tbh, but now that i remember there was this dude once that said "oh is just pastels" when he looked at some that i borrowed to a grandma so she could paint a mandala book that i gave to her.
