It’s not at all about the camera gear, it’s about how good the person is using it. When are people going to realize that. Some people just do not have an eye to create great images. The camera companies love it when people just buy more and more gear. I lead tours and see people with the best camera possible and still see them taking horrible pictures.

Exactly. A camera is merely a tool. Its the artist who makes it worth. Z8 will gradually become a legend. It is a legendary camera. Its going to be relevant for at least a decade. Its one of those equipment that a professional will not outgrow anytime sooner.

Yea. Even now in 2024. Many people still think or believe as long they spend alot of money or get the latest camera they will get good result. Answer is no. Its the same like many other thing. U can buy a supercar. If you cant drive. You cant. You can buy the best ingredient and best kitchen ware. If you cant cook. It will still taste bad.
People just see nice photos create by x people using x gear and they think they can create the same as long they use the same gear.. rip..

@@sgpork exactly. I shoot with nikon gear and it doesn't mean that i belittle other cameras. One of my clients wished to buy a sony and i totally encouraged him, he bought an a7iv, an excellent camera. Its all about personal preferences.
In this video Irene initially struggled to figure out how to change modes, its perfectly normal. Every new piece of equipment comes with a learning curve.

@Mystic, David's comment "It’s not at all about the camera gear" meant also: It’s not at all about owning a Z8. "When are people going to realize that. Some people just do not have an eye to create great images." Which means, a Z8 doesn't solve this problem, neither. Nor does any similarly priced item from any other brand, of course 😉

I'm a former Sony DSLR user.. When I was starting out, I started with Sony (they didn't have that hype back then). Everyone told me that I should switch to Canon, but I switched to Nikon :D I specify that I had tried Canon from my friends. Like you, I wondered how I would get used to it, and just like you, after 20-30 minutes I had no problems at all. Before I sold the Sony which had been sitting for about a year I tried to do one last session with it because why not, it was a nightmare... Digging through the menu was a pain in the ass, the feeling in my hand was like holding a toy, the "programmables "buttons" didn't exist in Sony at that time. Nowadays, I sometimes touch my friends Canon and Sony again and realize that there is no chance of leaving the Nikon. Just the fact that it is big and the way the menu is structured makes it very convenient for me. Canon comes pretty close ergonomically, but Sony in my hands is still a total disaster :) I'm not mentioning specific models because it doesn't make sense. As for image quality, I can't see any bad either. Nowadays, things seem to come down to personal preference and feeling. They all shoot great now.

Yeah. The Z8 and Z9 are truely on par with canon and Sony. It sucks that Nikon didn’t have the autofocus on point like Canon and Sony did when full frame cameras started to come in mirrorless. Nikon lost ground. A lot of people just started to buy Sony because Nikon uses Sony sensors anyways.

As you try the Z 1.2S lenses and note they are heavy, you should really also try the Z 1.8S variants. The bokeh may be a bit nicer from the 1.2S but in the sharp image plane the 1.8S may be a tad sharper even. At a fraction of the price and a fraction of weight and size.
In the past with (D)SLR cameras, we wanted faster lenses because the lens is also the viewfinder. With mirrorless, you have en electronically amplified viewfinder. The practical difference in light transmission between 1.2 and 1.8 depends on the actual T-value, not the f/number of these lenses and Depth of Field (DoF) depends to large extent on sharpness and a few other factors that are combined in the Circle of Confusion (CoC) parameter in the DoF formula - but almost nobody generally bothers about the CoC and consequently DoF numbers become arbitrary to such people.

Great styling for both shoots, the colors went well with Sonia's hair and the wintery backdrop, and that vase in Orysia's shoot is gorgeous! :D We just bought a new house and I'm styling it from scratch, been on the hunt for a vase for the kitchen island, so when I saw yours I just went, 'ooooooooh' LOL! IRENE, one IMPORTANT setting you MUST use, that is the "press button to use dial", it sounds silly at first glance (esp. being Autistic myself, reading things literally), but it is great, in custom settings, this allows you to hit mode, iso, flash, etc. and turn a dial (front or back), to change the setting, heaps quicker, and less fatiguing on fingers.

quite an expected action for Irene to do, as lately she has been using MF and LF film bodies, which have "dumb" flash systems, a switch and port, NO complex chips, just a 'fire' command, so flash power adjustments are on the unit itself, the "transmitter", even an expensive broncolor (early model battery and pack head systems), have a 'fire' and channel selector, thats it, simple, FAST, no "connectivity issues", like one can experience today; so quite a jump to the Nikon ttl and auto {in-camera} infra-red flash triggers we are used to with the sb line of speedlights.
[PS Irene, you only need a pop-up flash to trigger a Nikon speedlight, or any other speedlight{commander mode 🙂} can do it, inherent design feature ].

I have the Z9 (If you felt that the Z8 is big...)
But the Z8 is a powerhouse for sure , all the complains about Nikon are Pre-firmware .. they've come along way.
In the case of 1.2 lenses the depth of field is so shalow , that one small motion can get a miss focus on all systems.
The Z6 III is around the corner , most likly will be 24 MP as well , but we'll know soon , the question is what will happen with the Z7 III , rumers suggest 60 MP with good AF.
That could answer you to a high MP , and lower weight more comparable to the R5 , but it's not certain yet (then again I don't think you'd switch given how far you're invested lol)
I have the 50 1.2 as well , love it and use it maybe 70% of the time ever since I got it , maybe on Gen 2 they can make it smaller ? that's my only wish :)
As an 85 , I have the 1.8 because this focal length is not my cup of tea (still like it and use it , but not enough to justify 2600 USD for 1.2)
BTW if you loved the 50 and 85 , you should also check the 135 Plena , it's my next lesnse , according to reviews it's mind blowingly awesome!

I would like to see you try pixel shift with a portrait and also skin smoothing with a portrait and finally can you adjust picture controls sufficient to get a good jpeg image without having to process the raw image. RAW processing is great for all the options it gives you but a quick out of the camera jpeg cannot be beat for fast turn around time after a wedding or event. Not all images from such events need to be extensively post processed. Some are not "art" but are just for "remembrance."

I was a kid and saw in all the magazines people were using Nikon F4s and was thinking maybe Nikon was the way to go. I sort of like the way Nikon bodies looked and ended up buying a Nikon N90. I had it for many years and ended up staying with Nikon moving to the D80, D800 and was hoping to go with a Z8 but couldn’t wait and bought a Z9 instead. I love all of them. Great job and lovely portraits, Irene!!! Finally one of my favorite portrait photographers using one of my favorite brands.
I use both brands, lately I’ve been preferring Nikon… however in this video I really liked canons warmer tones that made the red hair pop. Then I looked at the green sweater and shirt and liked Nikons cooler tones better 😂 that’s why at the end of the day processing is so important and less so color science. You can have the best of both worlds if you want by adjusting a slider or using a brush.
I’d love to see you test out Leica and Hasselblad.

Its funny how absurdly agressively some people think one brand is better than the other when, you are right, they are mostly the same. If you pixel peep to the max, that Nikon 85 "is" sharper, especially in the corners, but in a real world situation both are more or less indistinguishable outside of the colors as you mentioned.
Also funny how you commented on the Z8 size. In the Nikon world it is considered really small and lightweight because it is basically a Z9 in a smaller body. ;)
Side note, you mentioned the bit about Nilon missing the iris. Nikon does have that problem BIG time with the cheaper/older bodies. Z8 solved this for the most part but if you had tried the Z7ii or Z6ii they would have driven you insane when shooting at 1.2. I'm at a point where I just accept that I often need to try to recover eye sharpness with something like Topaz because expecting my Z7ii to actually focus on an iris is a pipe dream. (Which, in my opinion, is kinda absurd given that the Z7ii is a $3,500 body)

I think the Nikon Z8 is the best hybrid camera on the market so far. Your video is all photo but it's worth mentioning that the Z8 can shoot internal prores 422 and internal 12 bit RAW video. Something Canon doesn't do. It has just as good if not better colors than Canon and I think the Nikon Z lenses are better than the RF lenses. In your 85mm examples the Nikon lens had more 3d pop. Also another thing worth mentioning is that there are a host of camera profiles in Capture One that I've never seen on another brand so you get the camera matching profiles in C1 that were actually made by Nikon. I went from the Canon R5 to the Sony A7R V and now to the Nikon Z8. I can pretty confidently say that Nikon is the best and most well rounded hybrid.

The green knitted vest seemed off to me in the Canon shots (too yellow) and was a dead give-away.
Note that what you call "raw" in the video is absolutely not raw [1] - it had raw conversion applied by C1 based on an unspecified profile. In Adobe Camera Raw (that does raw processing in Lightroom Classic and Photoshop) the standard profile applied to raw processing is "Adobe Standard" but that is a different profile for each camera, sometimes firmware versions and potentially adapted to the lens you used. With 1,164 different "Adobe Standard" profiles, the Mudbricks [2] try to make everything look the same. Adobe also offers profiles with names you'll find in the Z 8 and these try to mimic what happens in the camera to SOOC JPEG.
If you install (free) Nikon NX Studio, in it you'll find the camera profiles again, but straight from Nikon. In that menu you'll also find film emulation profiles like Tri-X (Kodak's famous 400 ISO B&W film) of (Kodak) Ektachrome Professional. If you want to use these in the camera for SOOC JPEG, you can transfer them with a memory card. Or make you own profile variants either in camera or in NX Studio and transfer them forth and back.
If you want to copy colour negatives then you can use Nikon's ColorNegReversal profile to turn them into positives (but having seen the profile and shots from my negatives I guess I would need variants for different films, different processing deviations, and different exposure deviations in the negatives).
Anyhow, the point here is that comparing shots between these cameras is not as transparent as you think because we don't know what C1 does to the raw files in its raw processing.
[1] a raw file consists of monochrome data elements (mono=single, chrome=colour). These come in three colour variants: red, green, blue. Each element stems from a single photosite in the sensor and has only one colour. To display such an image, each data element needs to have its two missing colours guessed in order to get an RGB pixel. That colour guessing is called raw processing or raw conversion. The raw file is not negative, and so extremely ugly that nobody wants to show them for what they are. In colour film we have three colour layers on top of each other and (theoretically) RGB at each coordinate. Attempts have been made (by Foveon, later acquired by Sigma) to try to copy the three layers in a sensor, but so far no business-wise viable solution was made. Increasing resolution makes the problems more challenging and full frame or larger is very difficult.
[2] an adobe is also called a mudbrick

Hi Irene - interesting video - glad you had a chance to finally use and experience Nikon. The more you use Nikon the more you will prefer it for so many reasons.
For those of us that have been shooting since the 80's, we know that Nikon was the premier Japanese camera/optics company. Nikon's decision to stand by its base of users and not update the F mount (first introduced in 1959) until 2018 was a testament to its loyalty to its user base, but turned out to not be the best business decision. Canon's move to the EOS EF mount in 1987 abandoned its then current user base, but created a faster AF system that allowed sports shooters to move to Canon from Nikon and set the stage for Canon's subsequent dominance in spite of its inferior optical formulas and lack luster RAW files and generally poorer build quality.
Then enter Sony: first to market with FF mirrorless in spite of their first 2 generations of camera being garbage and the use of the Sony E mount which is an APS-C mount being jury rigged through software to accommodate full frame parameters - can any one say focus breathing?. Sony temporarily jumped ahead due to its "open" mount (to third parties - which saved the brand) and its novelty/AF, and of course Social Media marketing schemes.
Today, in 2024, Nikon has returned to the forefront. At this time, they have the best all around system for hybrid 35mm digital mirrorless cameras in the Z mount boasting: the best build quality, cutting edge AF now on par with Sony, and Canon, best ergonomics, best optics (as a body of lenses when price and quality are considered ), class leading RAW files - anyone that has worked with NEF files versus Canon and Sony RAW files knows what this means, and most importantly the best mount - the Z mount, which is the 'universal mount'.
Due to its 16mm flange distance (distance from rear element to sensor) and 55mm throat diameter (the biggest in the industry) Nikon can now develop the best image quality from corner to corner and has the latitude to develop the most innovative optical designs - if one doesn't know why, look up "angle of incidence" with respect to optical design.
Finally, the Z mount is the universal mount because it is theoretically possible to adapt any lens from any competitor to the Z mount but not vice versa: today we can already adapt all Sony E mount lenses, Canon EF lenses, Fuji X mount lenses and Leica M mount lenses - all at near native to native functionality. It won't be long until there is an RF to Z adaptor - have no doubt.
Nikon builds photographic eco systems not just cameras and lenses like the competition.
Glad you finally had a chance to experience the best. Welcome to Nikon :)
    -PD

With modern camera, you are not going to get a huge amount of difference in image quality, and the main thing is personal preference, for things like ergonomics. I moved away from Nikon in 2022. For 2 reasons. I didn't like the ergonomics of the Z6 and Z7 style bodies, and cause I was going through a mid life crisis and wanted to try medium format. But with the Z8, Nikon created a body that I was really tempted to buy, but I still have a D850, which is the best DSLR ever made in my opinion and the image quality is stunning from that camera.

one important tip, the Nikon mirrorless cameras don't use the normal flash(speedlights), they ONLY use the sb-5000 at full capacity (menus, other than the 'basic' ones, like on a fuji xt1,etc.{the red eye, fill-in, modes}); they do have radio triggering, but you must turn it on in menu, and 'pair' with the separately sold transmitter, it works great, just have to take time to acquaint yourself with how it works.

While the best camera is always dependant on each persons use case, the z8 is an outstanding camera. IF you also do video, then there is no comparison, the Z8 is the outstanding choice. IF I was only shooting portraits, I would shoot the z6II but love my z8 and z9 for expedition photography where wildlife, action and video are most important. I agree it's heavy, which is a big help when shooting video
Historically Canon has had better "out of camera" skin tones for portraits but all that is fully adjustable both as custom profiles in camera and in post processing. I have come to LOVE my out of camera portraits taken in natural light from the nikons with little adjustment for colour.

These portraits are in softish light with consequently low contrast, and that can challenge "recognition AI AF". The shots are at about LV 10 and that is not a challenge to any camera. I replaced my Z 7ii by a Z 8 because the former started to become insecure about "recognition AI AF" from LV 7 and down. The Z 8 is much better at that. The Z 8's "recognition AI AF" with 3D tracking is phenomenal. I separate the "recognition AI AF" from the shutter release so the shutter half press locks exposure and the AF-ON button on the rear starts the focusing.

Yes, on the one hand, the Sony A7rV (and A9III) have the best LCD grip solutions. I zoom in Canon, but it annoys me that when I hold the camera, for example, on a tripod very low above the ground horizontally, I look slightly to the left at the screen. The screen axis does not match the optical axis. The Nikon Z8/Z9 solution would be OK if not for the huge LCD frames. Generally, when comparing the screens of even basic smartphones and professional cameras, I feel embarrassed. Big frames, and the screen is like a toy. All the best! Greetings from Poland!

I have a Z7 which I mostly use for street photography with an adaptor for my Contax lenses. Plus a Z9 for everything which moves faster. The Z9 auto-focus is great, even for beach tennis which is fast with plenty of movement. As for colour and RAW quality, using CaptureOne can fix everything, however I tend to under-expose by up to a stop as it's easier to bring back the shadow details. I think the greatest advantage the Z8 or Z9 has is the faster shutter speed, so you can use with the f/1.2's without having to use a ND filter in brighter lighting. Keep up the good work, when you are not feeling inspired just pick a mundane subject and play, after all we are not using film :)

When it comes to Nikon, Sony, and Canon: If you pony up the cash for the professional level gear, you're going to have a good time.
They're all pretty much equal for the most common kinds of photography out there (like portraits, landscapes, events, weddings, etc).
The differentiation happens when you push into the extremes, like sports and wildlife or cinema-grade gear. Then you start to see some more notice-able differentiation due to lens availability where Nikon/Canon tend to have a small edge over Sony. There are also some small differences in AF performance between Nikon, Sony, Canon. Otherwise, yeah, the big 3 are just that... the big 3. Also, for cinema, all of them have to compete with the "big guns" at Arri, where it becomes a whole new world of cameras.
I do foresee it becoming a "big 4" soon-ish though. Fujifilm is really starting to become competitive in their offerings. Some really cool gear there too.
