Although while we have good reasons to critizise that and even find that disgusting, we need to consider the historic context and understand the culture we are looking at. One thing to keep in mind is that boys and girls were considered adults once they reach the age of 14. they could be charged for crimes and sent to the battlefield. 12 (girls) and 14 (boys) were the legal ages for marriage. And based on the fact that this is the time you can theoretically bear children this makes sense from a STRICTLY biological point of view. And that most likely was, what they went of off. You have to understand they had no behavioural psychology, but their science mostly stemmed from watching/studying nature and interpreting that. Or to dumb it down: Period = woman. This seems crazy by todays standards, but for romans from that point on those „children“ weren’t boys or girls anymore but men and women. They had to give away their toys and age specific clothing and from that point onward they had to act like adults, because in their cultures they were seen and treated as adults. Young ones, at the border of adulthood, but still adults. It feels weird to me as well, but that is some historic context to keep in mind when talking about those kind of things. Imagine getting a child at 25 and then die at the age of 35. Leaving your child as an orphan at age 10. They had to engage in things like that earlier than we have today. Plus you could expecta handful of your children to die at a young age. There was no guarantee that your offsring made it, so as disgusting as this might sound today: you had to start early and be at it to secure the continuation of your lineage. The nobilty lived longer and rome, the city, had a very solid sewage system and doctors, but this doesn't change the fact that they had no antibiotics and a broken bone, a sickness or a infected cutting wound might have killed them. And in the countryside you might as well just die before you reach a doctor if your case is really severe. We see this to this day. My mother got children at 21. my grandmother even earlier. But now only very few of my friends (25-30) have children yet. This number is getting higher and higher. Lastly we might allow us the question to ask "what is the status of sex" We who are very much affected by christian believes see sex as something very intimate and some would even say sacred. Now compare that to our boys Zeus’ (their highest god) escapades: sleeping with his sister, and more or less every woman he remotely finds attractive. They have a godess of lust and beauty. Depictions of sex are everywhere. Maybe sex just wasn't that sacred of a thing. They were willing to openly depict it, nudity wasn't sexual per se, they made statues that clearly have erotic elements to them and also seem to have had "soft" sexual interactions with friends like intimately sharing benches while being only lightly dressed during drinking parties. Probably a level of intimacy that you would not dare to engage with a friend. Some recent examples of what I mean to bring home the idea: Acceptance is rising for "alternative ideas of love and relationships" were people that only consider themselves friends have sex with each other or even host parties were having sex with each other or strangers is just as normalized as having a conversation simply because it feels good. The meditarreneans to this day kiss each other like people in other countries shake hands or if we want to create more distance, in Japan they simply bow. Now we have Japan on the one hand, where kissing as a form of greeting someone is considering something very intimate. you will not see 2 friends do that in public in Japan. In Spain though you can expect to be kissed on the cheek once you reach a very basic level of friendship. I have been kissed on the cheek by people that really only were the friends of my friend. How do people keep falling for this bullshit. Just because average life expectancy was 35, doesnt mean people died at 35! It is skewed statistics due to child mortality rates. IIRC, if you live past 5 years old, you are likely to live a normal life of around 50-70+ years. People didnt magically die at 30 due to some arbitrary reason. People even pre civilization lived to old age, they just had to get through the first 5 years which were the most dangerous.
I think your comment is really good, but the nitpick I have (which I think is important) is that the average life span being 35 is heavily influenced by the likelihood of dying as a child. If you made it to 15 you had a pretty good chance of making it to 40, and if you made it to 30, you had a good chance of making it to 60. Most of the Ancient Greeks and Romans died young.
this is a great and insightful comment! loved to read it and gain some context and perspective. its very true. many people arent aware of *just* how much culture and the technology/resources of the times influence our perception of behavior. because the structure of societies are such that the predominant cultural ideas seem objective or like a given, we don't realize that those things we take as a given because it is how we grew up, were ideas that were developed and are only currently decided upon - they're not god given laws or truths. not thinking about history, but just the world today as it is, the different kinds of "normal" that exist culturally on pretty much every topic is so, so interesting! within one country there are so many subcultures of normal, let alone how much it varies from region to region across the world we obviously have more perspective now about what kinds of dynamics are more ethical or less ethical. but to people who grew up experiencing that - any kind of dehumanization - it becomes a sort of normal and accepted facet of life until a new context is given, new information, to redefine their sense of normal. if tools are given to question the culture, recognize your agency, and find your true self, or if all you learn is adapting to your home culture as it asks you to. unfortunately, real agency is not a baseline in most current cultures. adherence, power dynamics, and authority supercede that. but maybe this will change :). it seems it already is among many people
Historically most people married/had kids ~16-20. And even if one could get married at a young age, it was still generally not acceptable for their to be a significant age gap. And while it may be slightly different depending on the culture, most have a generally conservative view when it comes to sex, meaning if it's considered sexual, it belongs in private.

The end of your 'spell' mentioned the target falling in love with the caster. In Greek, there are three primary words for different kinds of love. The word they used was Philia, which translates as brotherly love (Philadelphia - a familial love and bond). If it was primarily wanting to get down and have sexy-time, that word would be Eros (erotic). If they used Agape, that is the word for divine love, or a pure spiritual love. Very cool video. I only recently discovered your channel but am thoroughly enjoying it. I will be upfront and say I don't typically pay for the patreon however what I think would be nice to see is extra content that isn't particularly allowed or encouraged on youtube. This is based off of what I see on similar channels and makes me want to buy the content. RUclips can be great for sourcing fans however the algorithm is so picky that if you show 1 bad thing for 2 seconds in a 25 minute video, it flags the whole thing. I see content creators leaving out certain content and catering towards that certain audience which is alright. I like the idea of getting to see the sources however I would love to see and really encouraged by additional video content that might go more in depth or show out takes that didn't quite make it into the video. I like the originality in your content and look forward to see more content.

The end of your 'spell' mentioned the target falling in love with the caster. In Greek, there are three primary words for different kinds of love. The word they used was Philia, which translates as brotherly love (Philadelphia - a familial love and bond). If it was primarily wanting to get down and have sexy-time, that word would be Eros (erotic). If they used Agape, that is the word for divine love, or a pure spiritual love. Sounds like he wanted his brother really bad, but that's another kink for another time. 😆 Great content, made me twinge a few times, but well put together.
Very cool video. I only recently discovered your channel but am thoroughly enjoying it. I will be upfront and say I don't typically pay for the patreon however what I think would be nice to see is extra content that isn't particularly allowed or encouraged on youtube. This is based off of what I see on similar channels and makes me want to buy the content. RUclips can be great for sourcing fans however the algorithm is so picky that if you show 1 bad thing for 2 seconds in a 25 minute video, it flags the whole thing. I see content creators leaving out certain content and catering towards that certain audience which is alright. I like the idea of getting to see the sources however I would love to see and really encouraged by additional video content that might go more in depth or show out takes that didn't quite make it into the video. I like the originality in your content and look forward to see more content.
