They seem to be some kid of self replicating bombs that heat up enough before detonation to melt through a planet's crust to find the optimal place to detonate. As for why I'm not to sure but it could be to make it easier to get ot the metals and other resources near the core. As for how they self replicate I'm not sure but self replicating machines are being considered for tge future of space exploration.

I still don't really understand the scene with all the white cubes. Everything else though makes sense at this point though.
