    • @yeldarb141983
      @yeldarb141983 8 лет назад +17

      Debatable...Star Trek had an existing fanbase that the Matrix, being the first film in the universe, simply didn't.
      Besides, look at the backlash against Kaitlyn Jenner, and that's only been in the past two or three years, with a person who was already somewhat famous.

    • @swishfish8858
      @swishfish8858 8 лет назад +37

      +*** “yeldarb1983” ***
      Kaitlyn Jenner is a bit of a different case. She's a celebrity in the "shallow assholes and gossip" world, no fucking shit there's gonna be backlash.
      Another high-profile genderswap case is that of the Wachowskis themselves, and I haven't seen NEARLY as much hate for them as I've seen for Kaitlyn.
      And just because Dax was part of an established franchise, doesn't mean she COULDN'T garner gender controversy. Remember the "lesbian" kiss scene? No trouble with a male in a female's body, but she better not kiss no ladies no siree!

    • @yeldarb141983
      @yeldarb141983 8 лет назад +6

      +Michelle Lehto true, but with an established franchise, unless you do something REALLY insane (or counter to the universe in a fundamental way), it's not going to be make or break.
      as for the wachoskis, as you pointed out, kaitlyn's career has declined into celebrity gossip/tabloid fodder and backseat to the reality show, where as the wakoski's are still getting work, (and probably riding the success of the matrix still).Plus didn't kaitlyn kinda come out first?kinda softens the blow not to be the first through the door, so to speak.
      not that I'm a huge fan of Mrs(Ms?) Jenner, mind you, I still think her getting off that manslaughter rap was complete b.s., but that's the usual celebrity revolving door legal system at work...

    The Matrix really is one of those movies that age TERRIBLY! just the look of this film, the leather outfits, the shades, the green filter, it's so late 90s, it's Cyber Punk light and it just doesn't hold up.
    the only saving grace is the action, and this is what did hold up, the choreography, the movement and inventiveness of it all, but than again, other than novely it also wears off.
    if only The Matrix wasn't such a grim and serious movie, and had it embraced a stronger color palate and a bit more of a satirical edge, maybe it would have help up. but than again, maybe those things would have held it back from being a truly cohesive movie.

    "Why is there a Matrix": maybe the machines were harvesting energy from human bodies directly from brain activity, since other muscles and organs in the bodies are undeveloped and weak due to lack of physical activities, hence they needed to have the brains stimulated, and the Matrix in its present form turned out to be the most effective form of a simulation.

    • @evgenkhersonets880

      Key word: "maybe"

    • @houseis
      @houseis 4 года назад +37

      That's a good idea. It's also because the machines need humans to give them a purpose. It goes into this existential philosophy more in the sequels. The delivery of that philosophy wasnt the best though

    • @TheHoagieChef
      @TheHoagieChef 4 года назад +33

      But even that makes the Matrix redundant. If you use humans as an energy source, you have to keep them alive to be able to interact with the Matrix to produce energy. Pumping oxygen, pumping nutrients, producing the nutrients, temperature regulation, all require an energy source. Not to mention the Matrix itself needs an energy source just to function. Even if the machines managed to achieve the highest theoretical energy conversion rate of 99.999999%, they STILL would run out of power no matter how many humans they kept adding to the system. Geothermal, wind and hydroelectric power would solve all energy issues, plus, no need to keep rebellious humans around. Heck, go to space! All the solar energy you can choke down out there!

    • @Noisivus
      @Noisivus 4 года назад +13

      I like to think they use human brains for their processing power, with part going to the matrix and the excess used by the machines. That way people like Neo and Morpheus found a way to keep all their own processing power to themselves which gives them more control over the matrix.

The movies appeal....at least what made it famous was that it was a western version of Ghost in the Shell, just....not as good. Really I don't see the Matrix as pretentious so much as I see them trying to ape ghost in the shell's depth without really understanding it. The other 'appeal' was the cool over the top fight scenes. To answer to the last point, "Why is there a Matrix", in the original script by the Wachowskys the humans were not supposed to be batteries, but processing units. The machines would be using most of the brain's capacity for their own uses, which is why they needed to keep it functional. The Wachowkys admitted as much in several interviews, but apparently the studies thought people wouldn't understand, as the general public was not yet as versed in computers by then. To paragraph a character from the webcomic Goliath by Neil Gaiman (in which the Wachowskys were extensively involved in writing):
    "I made the mistake of telling Susan some of what I believed one night - about how none of this was real. About how we were really just hanging there, plugged and wired, central processing units or just cheap memory chips for some computer the size of the world, being fed a consensual hallucination to keep us happy, to allow us to communicate and dream using the tiny fraction of our brains that they weren't using to crunch numbers and store information."

    I always assumed that the Matrix (the idea) was a final act of mercy from the machines. When Smith is interrogating Mobius, he said the machines tried to create a perfect world for humans through the first Matrix. But humans were so accustomed to pain and strife, they couldn’t adapt to it, and several died from the shock (which is silly in it’s own right).

      3)Reeves' awkwardness works fine here

    Never watched these movies so don't know the plot of the second or third movie. That said, it may be cliché but why not have the reason the humans are kept alive in the matrix world be not only for the machines to harness their energy, but also their creativity. AI might be intelligent, but could never match the creative nature of humans as a large portion of human creativity is birthed from being able to think outside the box in a manner that machines would find illogical. So it would not suit the machines to just make them brain dead or dream as without access to the illogical side of human consciousness they would never be able to solve novel problems that require true human creativity. That would be a lot better reason than what was described here, at least in the first movie.

    The waves on the building are actually pretty believable. In a simulation like this, with practically every atom in the world needing to get simulated, you gonna have to simplify stuff. Like buildings, which are programmed to stand there, not explode (it not a battlefield map, u know). The simulation will have possibilities for explosions, but they gonna load. Basically, the program is buffering the time until the actual animation is loaded. And those waves are easy to animate, because only the basic textures are needed

      So the Matrix which can handle the actions of billions of humans all doing different things simultaneously cannot handle a building exploding?
      It can handle cars exploding, helicopters exploding, but not buildings?

      Especially since the matrix was shown to have lots of explosion and destruction animations that could have been used as stand ins, wheras that is the only building ripple animation that we see.

    - "my own personal Jesus Christ", yes, the movie spells it out the whole way through, "you are the one Neo", then reels it back when he fails the jump, when the oracle says he is missing something etc. it is about doubting yourself versus the expectations of others.
    -His name is Tom...so what?
    -No, the agents cannot do everything, Morpheus says it very clearly "they are based in a world that is built on rules." Cause what happens if the system makes the agents too powerful? Agent Smith shows what happens, when he threatens the very system itself.
    -Yes, Agent Smith notices her, and therefore she drives away, it is in the clip you show.
    -That device is clearly future technology, who knows the way they have to heal wounds, reduce pain in the future.
    -the mirror dissolves cause his signal is getting disrupted, causing a lot of disruption in his connection to the system. That is how I interpret it. Or do you need all movies to explain everything to you on a silverplate?
    -the pill's disruption makes the machine falsely assume he is dead, he is flushed to where the dead go, and they rescue him. Also, the revolution is necessary for the system to work, this is explained by the architect, which is why the system allows it.
    -No, he doesn't have to be reminded, Tom explains what it means himself, to make sure they are talking about the same thing. Morpheus has access to so much technology Tom has never seen before, so it is not surprising Tom wants to make sure Morpheus means artificial intelligence when he says A I.
    -The shock to the mind causes bleeding resulting in damage. Yes, this part is weird, but what do I know about how virtual reality affects the brain and the body with technology from the future. The science maybe doesn't make much sense to us, but "you die in the game you die for real." This is a valid critique point.
    -him finishing her sentence is pretentious and dumb?...this is nitpicky reaching for straws imo, but whatever, he runs a comedy show, so at times it's his job.
    -He doesn't know what EMP stands for, sue him.
    -Yes his character doesn't have a lot of personality. Cracked explained the reason for this perfectly, explained very briefly it's about the audience being able to project themselves in his place. It is a technique used by many, many movies, show, books etc (Harry Potter, Star Wars, Twilight etc. watch the cracked video about it, they explain it perfectly). Not liking it is a legitimate criticism, I'll give you that, as it is not to everyone's taste. Or maybe Keanu is just a shitty actor, that's an explanation too.
    -yes, it is not a perfect movie, it is just imo the best movie yet. If you like another movie better, it's perfectly fine, and you are entitled to your opinion.
    -no, you had gunfire in the beginning too. Not really important, but whatever.
    -He has to fight an opponent he knows he has no chance of beating, and is sacrificing himself, I think most of us would freak the fuck out in that situation, so him yelling is not really that insane.
    -the toilet headslam criticism... well, it's a comedy show...
    -I agree with you on that one, that character in white is extremely underdeveloped, so her death doesn't really have much impact. This is true for most of the non-essential characters. Legitimate criticism.
    -He got lucky and didn't die from the electricity gun, sue him. Or the system preserved him to make sure Neo survive if you view it from the angle of Zion being in a matrix too. Multiple interpretations is one of the reasons so many people like this movie.
    -If you find Weaving's speeches boring, then this movie is probably not for you, which isn't the movie's fault. But whatever, comedy show.
    -Yes, that scene is interesting as it greatly shows one of the major flaws in their cause, killing people for the "greater good", a topic of debate as old as language.
    -That "any distance" thing is never said, you made that up. the Quote is "men have emptied entire clips at them and hit nothing but air." Yes, she says a catchphrase which should give him time to dodge, they sacrifice logic for action movie coolness here, it's a legitimate criticism, but then again, in a the world inside the Matrix where people are jumping 50 meters and cartwheel firing an m16 on full-auto with one hand while hitting with great precision, logic is not high on the agenda of the action scenes. It's a legitimate criticism though.
    -"Speed of light movement" is something you made up. You really think that dodging a semiautomatic handgun and dodging a fucking gatling gun is equally easy? Morpheus said it before, their powers are based on rules, they are not all-powerful, otherwise it would be a short movie.
    -he is ripping a handcuff chain apart with the handcuffs gnawing into his arms, obviously it is painful, you can even see the red marks on his wrists, so he is screaming in pain. But whatever, comedy show.
    -he thinks the way Tom saved her is badass, so he believes he is the one. Different people have different criteria for whether they believe he is the on or not. For example, Morpheus believed it right from the start.
    -"We spill out everything else for the audience, why stop now?"... really? Oh well, comedy show.
    -Yeah, that is pretty shittily done by Trinity, I'll give you that.
    -It is not nothing but talking the first half, and not all fighting the second half, that is just objectively false. But whatever, comedy show.
    -he takes over the body of someone in the train, it is not logic of merry melodies, it is a very established ability they have throughout the movie, and you mention it several times in the video, so you know they have it.
    -No, the system brings him back, cause he has to restart the Matrix cause that is the purpose of the One. Or it is the power of love. Or it is because his power as the one transcends life and death, which is repeated when he revives Trinity. Many interpretations, which is, as earlier stated, one of the reasons people like this movie.
    -She is trying to hide that she loves him. If you cannot understand that, you have a lot to learn. Love and chemistry are two very different things, this is not a romcom.
    -Simba, being original, doesn't not mean every single thing is something never seen before in the history of mankind. But whatever, comedy show.
    -You don't like Keanu Reeve's acting, legitimate criticism.
    -Agent Smith explains it while he is "boring Morpheus into submission." The machines tried to create a perfect world with no problems. He explains how "it was a disaster, no one would accept the program, entire crops were lost." Here it is explained that for the humans to produce the energy the machines need, the humans need a believeable world to live in, otherwise they die. Maybe this is a result of the fusion process the machines use (mentioned by Morpheus when explaining the world of the machines), maybe it is caused by something else, but the necessity of the matrix system is explained in the movie.
    Or maybe it is cause the machines secretly value the potential of humans (Neo defeats Agent Smith, which the machines couldn't, and they know that other problems could arise that would require a human mind to solve, so they keep the humans mentally working as a backup measure in case such a problem arises.
    Or maybe it is cause the machines don't want to be like the humans themselves and have humans as mindless slaves, as humans has treated machines (If you watch the animatrix, you see that the machines tried to make peace with the humans, the humans started the war, so the machines are not pure evil, a theme also seen in many movies involving intelligent machines and robots, including the Terminator).
    Or maybe something else, there are many different interpretations and explanationsfor the different things in this movie, you being unable or unwilling to see them doesn't make it a plothole.
    Yes, this movie has flaws, as do all movies, there is no such thing as perfect. Many people like it cause it inspired them, made them think in new ways, question things, interpret things in different ways, and that is why it is in my opinion a masterpiece. If it didn't do that for you or you just didn't get it, it's fine, but that's not the movie's fault, and doesn't make it any less of a masterpiece, it just means it's not for you.
    And yes, I'm a Matrix fanboy, but I have tried to make sober arguments in my answers and maintain a good tone, hope you do the same.

    I actually avoided this review because I thought it was going to just mindlessly praise the film, like everyone else does. I just want to say, it's very refreshing to find someone else who feels the same way I do about this movie! I've only seen it once, so maybe a second viewing would help, but my initial reaction was, "Meh, that was ok". I didn't hate, but I didn't love it, either. I totally agree that it often comes off as pretentious and overly philosophical. I appreciate it's impact on film and pop culture, but I've always seen it as just a movie ranging somewhere inbetween "ok" and "good".

    Yeah, as soon as my brother saw the "Neo is revived because love" scene, he said it would've been better if she had said "You can't be dead, because I don't love you yet".
    Think about it this way-from her point of view, these are the facts:
    1. She will fall in love with the One
    2. Neo is the One
    3. She doesn't love Neo
    As such, if he's dead, she wouldn't have any time to fall in love with him, which means he can't be dead-it's factually impossible. This would mean that he wasn't revived by a 1985 Huey Lewis song, he just survived being shot a whole bunch because he's the One, and that's one of the things Morpheus said the One can do. All of the stupidity is eradicated by her admitting her LACK of infatuation for him, rather than, to repeat myself, ThE POWEr oF loVE!!!1!1!11!1
    TL;DR: Tough. Read it anyway, lazy. I'm not your puppet.

      It's not "the power of love" that brings him back, the kiss just showed him that he isn't dead, he is still alive on the ship. This was foreshadowed in a scene earlier in the movie where Morpheus tells Neo "What is real?", Neo coming back in the end brings this idea full circle that the Matrix is not real, it's just a program in his head.

    Didn't they explain in the movie that the machines discovered that they needed something like the matrix to keep the human "batteries" alive and healthy? They made it sound as if the humans needed to have a virtual life in order to "thrive" and live a long, power-producing life. They also said how they tried out several versions of the matrix until they found one that worked best and kept the humans the way they wanted them. Obviously, this shouldn't be scientifically accurate, nor is the idea of using humans to generate power, but it is just enough to get the story going. You give sci-fi a bit of a break sometimes with how the science works or why certain things are done. It if is just good enough for a couple hours of suspension of disbelief, you are good to go.

Basically people who shy away from social interactions or events and prefer to spend there days at home or somewhere non interactive. Those who are outgoing may not care much for his character cause they can't relate to him while those who aren't outgoing might.
