How to: The ULTIMATE Nerf Maverick rev-6 Mod Tutorial (Barrel Drop, Air Restrictor, Spring Mod)

- In this Video, I mod and upgrade a nerf maverick rev-6. This video shows in depth, step by step how to make the spring more powerful, remove some plastic for a full barrel drop (makes reloading much easier), and how to remove the air restrictors. I also show internals and what tools you need.
BTW, it cuts off twoards the end because I was tired of fooling with a spring that wouldn't fall back into place on camera. I later got it set and screwed the case back together. You can see this in the range test video which is linked below.

I did this mod but instead of cutting out the entire air restrictor, I just go rid of the spring and cup. Much more velocity and quite a bit more accurate.

@@jmoney3647 Yeah, I did that too. Keeping the holder is like a guidance stick on an ancient firework; it helps keep the dart straight for a longer period of time, even if that period of just a fraction of a second longer than if you had cut it off.
12 years later, and it's still hard to deny how in depth and easy to understand this video is.
I really don't have but a couple Nerf guns anymore, having gave most of mine away, but I did find a couple lying around in boxes after a move. One was a Rough Cut, the other a Maverick like this one, except yellow. Both I got from random garage sales years ago for ultra cheap from what I remember. Rough Cut is in decent shape, but the Maverick is a bit (ironically of the two) rough around the edges. Some scratches, some paint missing. Which I strangely enjoy, as I like that it's clearly been used and kicked around a lot - a survivor. It's pretty nasty inside, too. Anyway, the Rough Cut I might give up, but the Maverick is a cool one to keep as one of the only Nerf guns I have left, after having had so many of them and being big into it as a kid. After all - what better of just one to have left but probably THE most ubiquitous Nerf gun of my childhood, and probably one of the most popular ever. EVERY kid had a Maverick. Some more than one. They were very cheap - I remember them being like $7 in the 00s, and especially considering others commonly costed around $30 - $40, the Maverick was pretty much the go-to for parents buying their kid something when they wanted a Nerf gun. I remember a birthday party for another kid once - he got FOUR of them, and there was lots of darts flying everywhere as other kids were having a shootout with just Mavericks. It's really hard to overstate how common these were - and possibly still are. I have zero idea.
All this said, I've started cleaning up the one that I have, taking every damn screw and piece apart that can come apart and deep cleaning it. It's pretty gross, to be honest. Lots of dirt and...black grunge...everywhere inside. Especially around tube where you rack it. It's definitely a well-used one, from how fouled it is inside, and how scuffed it is on the inside. If it were much newer and cleaner, one might be tempted to keep it stock, but seeing as this one is kind of a beater anyway, I see it as an open canvas for modification and just going to town with it, and I've been looking at forums as well as couple videos like this, getting a good idea of what all I can do to it, as well as how. I may have but the one Nerf gun left (soon anyway, besides the Rough Cut), but it'll have every damn thing imaginable done to it. Only six rounds, but I bet a little Nerf skirmish would quickly be over from how unpleasant the darts would be coming out of the beast. It'll be interesting trying to get this thing back together, and I'm having to superglue the coins together I'm putting behind the spring (which is stretched), because everything wants to go shooting all over the place while trying to hold it in place. Between a bunch of coins behind the spring, the spring itself being stretched, and removed air constrictors in the chambers...it may not be THAT powerful, shooting foam darts after all, but at least for a Nerf gun, hopefully it's along the lines of handheld artillery. Or maybe not so much. We'll see how good it all works when put back together. My luck, it'll only be a little better after all that, but hey, a little better is a little better. I never really got this crazy with modding back in the day, so it's at least entertaining to really do the works to one particular Nerf gun just to get a taste of that sort of scene.
I also lost a spring somewhere, the one that goes beneath the orange piece inside the slide where a scope would attach. No idea when that happened, searched for at least 45 minutes for it...never found it. Maybe I'll steal another spring from the Rough Cut, or maybe I'll repurpose one of the springs from the air constrictors. Resourcefulness, right?
You can make springs from clicky pens or mechanical pencils, or wrap welding wire around pins or nails

Please don't stretch the spring there is a simpler mod called the penny mod which accomplishes the same thing without risking your guns function

FYI - If you use stock darts, taking the posts out during the air restrictor mod is not only useless, it actually hurts performance. It is best to keep the air cavity of the dart filled, as increased container volume leads to decreased pressure. IOW, you don't want the air blast from the plunger to have anywhere to go but out of the blaster. The post mod is useful ONLY if you are using stefan darts.
I just tried the mod debate. I did one with removing the plastic like drac, and another leaving it alone. My results show that removing the plastic does increase the shot power.
It seemed the first few shots sucked, might be the darts. So I reloaded it and tried again and they all fired better.
No real clue as to why the same darts worked better the second round except maybe the dart diameter was too large and took away some of the power getting it out of the cylinder. When reloaded, the darts changed position so it's probably a dart problem more than a blaster issue.
Also my first attempt failed as the plunger head was unseated. I opened it back up and seated it properly and it fixed the no fire issue.

Just finished putting my gun back together, and I followed all the steps; it all works great. On the newer ones you definitely need to improvise on removing the air constrictor since the plastic is thicker now, so I used a box cutter which is sharper than a little knife. All in all, the gun is definitely louder, and the distance has been increase for sure. Thanks for the video!

The air restrictor is fine to remove. But the six pillar things inside the barrels are not supposed to be removed. Its the thing that holds the darts and reduces the air needed to propel the projectile. That is why when removed, your shots are weak. Do not remove the six pillar thingies.

I agree, & in fact have used a big nail file to shave my maverick's tab down. I also just kept the dart holder & the barrel together while doing this. I made sure to blow out the plastic shavings before putting everything back together.

I did the spring and the barrel i did not do the air restrictor because of all the complaints from the other comments on this video but thanks to those two mods my maverick is now working again so thank you sir for your video.
ur pretty lucky i had to do a reverse engineering project in high shcool my maverick took about an hour to put back together
I struggled to get the air restrictor removal because I couldn't cut out the holes
What I did was heat up the knife with a lighter and then do it.
Me neither I just took the whole thing out

I found some of my old mavericks in an old toy chest and I am so excited to see what they can do after these mods!
Thanks alot drac, this was my first mod ever and its working perfectly...one thing though, instead of using a knife i used sharp pliers for all the stuff u did with a knife. It is less more dangerous and sometimes easier

For anyone who's gun didn't work afterwards, make sure the front half of the plunger is well seated in it's trench, anchoring it in place so the back half can slide around it. If not, both halves slide around and slam into the front, breaking off plastic.

Had a problem with the drop barrel mod had a bad knife, but great tutorial I was worried it would break my gun but it didn’t the only thing I done differently was I added 3 1ps to the back of the spring instead made it so much more powerful
Fun fact, the removed 3 prong air restriction peace makes for a fun dart tip mod, as always don't aim at the face or better yet don't fire both modded parts at people, and if you do, at least have the "volunteer" wear safety glasses ;3

When you cut the air restrictor out make sure not to warp the disc it has to fit back into the barrel I had the same problem then I touched it up and it works better than ever
Don't stretch the spring. It does nothing but weaken the spring. It will not give you more power.

+Abrar Ahmed Stretching your spring will make it more brittle, which means it could snap. Its much, MUCH better to put something behind the spring like pennies.

I enjoy some of your mods... this one you half assed seriously... I filled in the open gaps in the plunger and the restrictor parts with silicone and redrilled the holes to fill in the open gaps and not loose pressure. then upgraded the spring.
Same here, did it with two mavericks just to see if I did something wrong and I think it may be that you have to keep the air restrictors whole, and just cut out the dart peg. I broke some and they don't shoot at all, but the ones that I didn't break still don't shoot any farther. In fact, they shoot a little shorter.

make sure the air tank is still lined up when you put it back together
Look inside the gun, above the trigger. there is a small spring that also needs to be lined up. Then the airtank too.
same deal here but with a brand new one. It's working about two thirds of the time. It seems more like the darts are sticking than a pressure loss, I'll have to look at it more tomorrow. Might be more reliable with the restrictors out but the dart guides unchanged. The barrel-drop is sweet!
I tried to mod a maverick once. Messed the turret mech rotation up and then never tried again. So I stuck to modding Nite Finders and got really good at in 2004-2005.

Also, some people on the internet suggest gluing straws in the area that holds the ARs will fix it. Try that as well

What I did about the air restrictor was I used a lighter to heat up my knife and just slice right through the plastic pieces. Still took a long time as I was trying not to burn my hands too much.
Also, to do the barrel drop I used the serrated edge of my knife, which cut through very cleanly.

i did this just today, funny how the mod still works 12 years later?
His mod actually works, it fires great and it's even louder. I did not stretch the spring but instead added four pennies to it. As for the air restrictor I took them off just as he did and it works fine.
Why post a video of a MOD if you do not complete it.

You didn't re-build it correctly. I did the same, but was able to look and see what was wrong. Make sure each spring is in the right place!

My friend just modded my maverick. with whistlers, it goes incredibly further. I love this nerf gun.
Yes that happened to mine, I just reinforced it by drilling through it on both sides in one spot and inserting a little rod of stainless steel and it works fine.
Also adding a bit of foam at the bottom of the plunger is recommended because the plunger will wear down after awhile from being hit with that amount of stress from the mod.
I did what you said for my boy gun but when he went to fire it the gun spring flue out of the back an put my sons eye out. why do you do these videos my son is blind in one eye because of your video.

barrel drop is amazing, still works, though i have noticed very little improvement with the power of the gun, hint, file down the bits you cut off to perfect smoothness, and dont cut 60% of your fingertip off and end up in hospital like i did!

Thanks for the video! I just modded my clear Maverick. I stretched the spring and put in a penny mod. Dropped the barrel and removed the ARs.
I did this mod ..I used wd40 in the plunger toob and also put 5 pennies in and this thing shoots great....love it
I already broke my guns on my own so I decided to mess around with it and do the full barrel drop and it works.
Welp, did it. It was easy enough. Love the drop barrel mod, that's my fav. Can't say I'm remotely impressed with the shooting power. Now that the central pylons have been removed , going to put the "air restricters" back since they have a smaller chamber for the air to escape, I think that will give the shot greater pressure and distance. Sounds right in my head at least. We'll see..
I actually just kept the barrel holder on the barrel & used a nail file to scrape the little holding tab off. Grant it, that's a ton of work & will take a while, & at the time I wished I had some sand paper to use...But if the modder isn't removing air restrictors or trying to g get their barrel to look more like a "mini turret", then it's ok to keep the barrel & barrel holder together while filing/scraping the tab off.
It's weird how much this is like a real gun DIY video...

i dont know what everyone is talking about these mods breaking your gun, i did all of them and my maverick is shooting fine and getting better ranges!

For everyone having problems with their gun not firing after the barrel mod, you need to make sure you need to make sure you don't damage the lip of your dart holder. That's what makes an air tight seal with your barrel, allowing your dart to shoot.

I have that problem too, you might have to try pulling it out, or using another philps head screw driver. I'm lucky enough (if you want to call it that) to have broken 1 of my Maverick shells & smart enough kept the barrel & other parts from it, so I have an extra barrel to work with incase something like that happened.
i did this mod and i put my old maverick spring together with its spring and i got 45 feet out of it and its hard to prime but it is freaking awesome
i streached the spring as u did and yes i had trouble keeping it all in. so what i did was put a log piece of tape across it and doubled it back so i could grag it and pull b 4 i snapped it all back together

So, I postponed cutting the air restrictor cap. I finally did and it stopped shooting. Then I had a brilliant idea. I put straws so that the air feeds directly to the darts. Side note, the hotter the glue the more likely you'll melt the straw.

This is an awesome hack. I didn't test for distance before, but the darts definitely seem to go further. One problemI had was getting the spring back on the cocking mechanism. It's not mentioned here. But if you don't get it on there, once you pull back mechanism back it slides loose. Attaching the spring fixes it.
if you stretch the spring, it makes it weaker.
by going to Ace, and going to their screws section, you can find a harder spring of the same length of the original

Followed this tutorial and made a great cosplay-type CS-6 Maverick. Unfortunately, the internals are trash to begin with, so the cylinder doesn't always rotate on the trigger pull.

But in the end, it's the NERF blaster with the best mods ever! It even has mods that make it look more like a real gun than the other NERF blasters.
This mod sounded neat so I tried it out on one of the 4 Mavericks I bought recently. I followed the directions carefully and everything went back together ok. Unfortunately the modded gun won't shoot as far as the stock ones and sometimes won't shoot at all. This was my first Nerf mod and probably my last. I hope others have better luck.
Also, instead of stretching the string.. putting a few pennies in behind the spring can help i've heard
Kick ass, dude. Just found this. Wish i found it 2 years ago when i bought it and the first day took it upon myself to do the loader kickout, because it was redic how little room the stock drop gives you lol. But yeah man, I wasnt sure about losing parts inside the clip but sure enough - straighter and quicker shots. Nice job man. And thanks ;)
@2mommabee2 check and make sure that you put in the screw that goes under the cocking mech. If you did open the blaster again and stretch the spring on the catch that drac is holding at 2:20.
