Thank you for giving my idea a visual. I was wondering how to make this happen for myself, because I could not find anything in the fabric stores that I liked.
Great video! I would!d love to see a more detailed tutorial on how you drafted and sewed up the lapped zipper/ zipper shield. One of my pet peeves right now in coat/ jacket making is a lack of this feature in so many patterns!
Thanks for watching! I really should have gone into more detail on that part...it got cut out when I was editing the video down to save some time. If I do another one, I'll definitely show that (I agree, this should be a thing on all zip up coats!)
This video is so helpful! I couldn't find any properly detailed tutorial on how to use batting for similar projects like this but your video was so easy to understand and follow! Thank you 💕💕
I just got done making a puff jacket for my son , and I'm going to make mine next week . we are from the Caribbean in Trinidad and we're going to visit Switzerland for Christmas this year ,so I'm very busy making all the sweaters and gloves, hats and now the jackets . his looks super and he loves it 😊 thanks for the video 💗
this is perfect. I love how you adjusted the width to fit you and how you used a 2 way zip so you can unzip from the bottom if you are climbing over logs up hill. The tutorial for the pocket was great!
thanks for posting this tutorial. I'm planning on making a quilted jacket and this is a great reference point. Also, that jacket looks crazy professional. Nice work.
I've just put in my first ever welt pockets using your video as a guide and they came out perfect. Thank you for having the only video that I could find to help me put pockets in my puffer jacket (sewing the Serra jacket with your welt pockets)
Absolutely stunning! Love it. Thank you for taking the time to make a video. I tried sewing and videotaping my work and I can’t lol when I start a project I just keep going. Definitely saving this in my sewing project ideas I can’t wait to have a free day to get this done ❤
Thanks for this! I am just starting research on making my own winter coat (irishman now living in Canada and aghast at the winters here! 😆) I was shopping for fabrics this week and the shop assistants looked at me like I was crazy to be trying such a thing!
Not crazy at all! I love this coat--it is one of my favorite makes and keeps me very warm and cozy. Best of luck with your coat! You should wear it back to the shop to show it off! :)
@@PatternScout haha, I may well do. It is going to take me a while to get around to it, but early research is promising. Found a few great looking fabric resources online via facebook groups, so I am excited to give it a go :)
Impressive, and well-explained. I wish I had seen this a year ago, but I honestly don't think I have the courage or patience to take on something like this. Maybe one day… Thanks and cheers!
Amazing work. I am inspired to do a similar coat but with one I already own that is now way too big for me. I want to start by shortening the coat and taking it in on the sides at least 1". I've had it sitting in my closet for two years thinking it's too nice to give away, so why not use it as a practice coat since I wasn't wearing it anyway. I'm a beginner so this may not go well, but if I "just" shorten it and take in the sides, that might be all I need. This way I don't have to make the entire coat, use the same sleeves, hood and collar.
I am very grateful that you posted this video. The link on your blog for the original coat went to a blank page. Also, I wonder if the high loft batting for puffy comforters would work better than the Joann product. Just a thought. In any case, thank you for posting this - it is extremely helpful!
Thank you so much for this video! I too want to make a puffer jacket from scratch, and as you said I am finding the resources on it a little thin. I'm all for thrift flips, but I have all the material in stash already so why not
Pretty amazing Casey! For me, the first step is to sew the easiest coat possible after practicing on jackets. Once I get the fit down, it would be fun to actually make a long quilted jacket out of quilting cotton.
Your coat is so cool and looked so gorgeous on you! I was also really glad to see it came out a bit too small!!! I know that sounds a bit mad!! but you watch things on RUclips and everything always works out perfectly then you try and make the same garment and it doesn't always turn out that way. It's great to see that although things don't always go to plan it doesn't matter, there is always a way round it!! I loved this video thank you!!!
I just ordered the hunter green nylon! Excited to give this a go. I was thinking up until seeing your video that I'd just have to give in and buy a puffy coat. So inspiring.
I bought a new puffy jacket last year, but I lost a lot of weight since then. Not saying you should do a video specially for me, but I can't be the only one with this problem. Could you maybe show how to take apart and size down an existing puffy jacket?
You are an amazing teacher..I just love the way you teach ..make it so easy..good going..love you..thanks for sharing those little secret which lot of people don’t tell..God bless you..
This project is wonderful, I just bought a puffer coat and was looking for some refashion ideas when I found this video. Now I want to make my own, maybe one day. Love the separate stand collar and hood, on my coat there is no seperate collar, just the hood that extends to the front and buttons there. I don’t particularly like the way the hood hangs at the back, a separate hood would hang better.
Such a lovely coat. Although you used and altered a previous jacket pattern of yours, would you consider creating a puffy coat pattern similar to this one?
Hello, thank you for your wonderful detailed video. I’m about to tackle making a parka. FYI I found a source for fabrics and zippers used in making winter outerware in the north in Canada. Brador Fabrics in Montreal. I found a simple parka pattern from MacPhee Workshop in Alberta
I live in Asia where available parkas are sized to be broader than longer. I inevitably fall into the problem of the torso being just right when the sleeves are too short or the other way around with the sleeves just right while the rest of me swims in cold air. This tutorial was a huge help as I had no idea how to size patterns. This isn't the exact pattern I'm looking for, but I'll find a nice cheap puffer that fits well and pack it right so it looks as clean, taught and quite frankly expensive as yours. I hate puffers with a very saggy shell. Yours came out better than most off the rack ones.
So glad it was helpful! I think it's a great idea to take apart one that is close to what you want and make it better. Appreciate your kind words! Thank you for watching!
The reason I'm looking at this tutorial is specifically because of the snugness at the hips of pretty much every commercially available puffer coat - I think the quickest solution would be to slash and spread (a.k.a cut the pattern from middle shoulder straight down to the hem, then keep the shoulder together but flare out the bottom, basically making an A-line jacket) - Especially since you'll probably make an elastic belt to take in the waist anyway. Edit: If you've already made your coat, undo the side seams to under the armpit and put the coat on - how big of a triangular gap is created at the side? Measure width (on both sides and take the average) and height of the split and then quilt yourself two triangles of that size and insert them into the side seams. But be careful not to let the filling spill out when you cut!
Wow. That came out great. I always wondered how they were made but you broke down the process and made it seem so manageable. BTW I live in a very hot country so no opportunity to wear this where I live.
Oh I have a question! Is this a shaped sleeve, like does the pattern have an elbow bend, or elbow darts? Because all these puffer skii jackets seem like they'd lose so much arm maneuverability from being on the straight grain and stuffed - but probably I'm just overly worrying about wasting all that batting and lining and outer fabric. Ps. Thank you so much for this tutorial, this is exactly what I was looking for - all of these other tutorials just felt like they were cutting up a blanket and glossing over the fact that you have to adapt your normal pattern because of the circumpherence lost to puffiness. I felt such kinship when you said you just had to make it from scratch - I can't wait to see what other stuff you make! Love from Sweden - I had no idea there was so much snow in the American south
Thanks! You know, I have probably been using it that way the whole time without even realizing it (i've tried to put it on the both ways and always have trouble with it! It's a finicky little foot! haha).

Hi! Thanks for the video, I would like to ask, are there specific kinds of sewing machines to use for when sewing thick materials like you did or it’s the needles that matters most and most sewing machines can do the work with just the right strong needle? Thanks 💚
