This is a great idea! Sustainable and has excellent results! However, for anyone who wants to try this and lives in a place with a lot of snow/sleet/rain, just make sure that the outer fabric ISN'T cotton. (Source: Me, a Canadian)

This would look cool with a contrasting color bias tape like black and make it a feature. Have the taped seams on the outside. My new hack is use socks as knitted cuffs on jackets. There are so many cool socks being made now and if you just cut off the foot section, the tube section (folded over) can become jacket cuffs.

@@user00616 i think they mean instead of cutting around the pattern pieces, trace the pattern pieces onto the blanket and then sew along the pattern lines. This way you can sew the pattern pieces closed before cutting the blanket open and letting all of the feathers out !! :-)

Very late to this sewing video but I must say you are the first one to sew a puffer jacket with a real down blanket instead of using polyester batting from JoAnns (yuck) I think you gave me the courage to do this myself. slightly different approach, will purchase a light weight down blanket maybe 2 king or queen. I will trace out the pattern pieces on the down blanket and zigzag the pattern pieces and then cut. Once I get them cut out without feathers/down going everywhere, then i will serge and finish the edges. I will use a waterproof nylon shell and quilt that to the blanket following the same stitch lines on the blanket making sure that they all line up. I will also use a think poly bating between the nylon shell and the blanket. I will also use a cupro lining for the jacket and put details inside pockets, elastic waist tunnel for tighening etc. and I hope I can draft a hood to go with the coat as well I will study what you did for that. Thank-you so much for this video and the inspiration to follow my dream of making a real down coat and not some poly bating piece of crap.

Last year I made a huge coat out of a sleeping bag like with wendy and it is so much easier to handle when it's filled with Cotton Fleece/ batting than feathers. Also I only sewed the outside layer right sides together and did the entire inside/lining by hand with a mattress stitch so no seams were visible. It kinda still looks like Im wearing a sleeping bag though lol but sooo warm!

LOL! I had a similar experience with the feather mess. I teach drama and was making the regal cape for the lion in The Wizarsd of Oz. I loved the moment where they pull up what you think is a patch of garden and it's a floral cape. I actually bought a green fleece blanket for the grassy effect and as I cut it, I was creating tons of fuzzies and soon the entire bedspread where I was cutting was green! I had to go over the whole thing with packing tape, like a lint brush
